If it weren't for dogs, I couldn't stand people.

That Mohammed and Muslims hate dogs tells me everything I need to know about them.

I never trust a man who isn't a dog lover.

I also can't help but to wonder about the morals of people that dogs just don't seem to like.

I am preparing myself for the loss of my dear dog friend of nearly 15 years, taking in each weak bark she manages. She's lived outside her entire life, but joins us by our wood stove now. Each sunrise I check to make sure she's there, each hike adjusting my pace so she can keep up, stopping every few minutes for her to rest, and turning around a bit sooner so she can make it home. I won't deny her the woods until she just can't go.

Given that God will demand an accounting from every animal as written in Genesis 9:4, I believe there must be rewards as well. May it be so.

I'm sorry to hear of your family's loss Vox. A loyal dog is a gift from God.

Even though we don't have a dog, I grew up among many a dog family and my wife had a dog when we first met (even though, technically, she was her father's dog). Newfoundland mix, black as night, and she let you know how she felt about you.

Even though it's been 13 years, I remember the last time the wife and I saw her. She pawed at me, wanting me to give her as much attention as I could, because we all knew it was time to say goodbye. It was a message to me that she accepted me and that she was sure that I would take care of her human.

We may be cat people, but we are definitely accepting of all animals, as they are true gifts from God. My condolences, Vox.

If any animal has a soul -- and some perhaps do -- it's a faithful dog who almost certainly has one.

A relative who did two tours in Afghanistan told me a story about a Marine dog handler who lost friends, and was always stoic about those losses.

A large hunting dog and his master are one. My Black lab would go thru hell to retrieve the ducks I killed. His hips eventually failed. I would carry him out side and help him defecate. When it was time to put him down at vet my wife volunteered to take him. But I said no , i want to be the one he saw last.

An Eastern Orthodox Prayer for the Death of A Companion Animal

Holy God, everything that has breath praises You both in this world and the next. In Your all-encompassing mercy, O God, we now commit the life of this our beloved friend and companion (name) to eternal fellowship with You.

Create within us a spirit of gratitude for the life of (name) Give rest, O God, to (name) who lived among us and gave us freely of (his/her) love.

Holy Father, Your Son Jesus Christ taught us that not one sparrow is forgotten in Your sight; We ask therefore for You to provide a place of green pasture where (his/her) praises will be heard in Your presence and where (he/she) shall be free from suffering and pain.

God our Creator, hear our prayer:

Glory to You, O Christ our God, the origin and destiny of all living things;
Glory to You, O Christ our God, Who bears the wounds of all suffering;
Glory to You, O Christ our God, Who transforms suffering into joy.
You are the God who creates and the God who reconciles and redeems all creation.
Glory to You, O Christ our God and Saviour of the Universe: in Christ shall all be made alive.

Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us. (3)

Glory to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

Blogger Randomatos November 13, 2019 5:52 PM

When you catch a glimpse of fuzzy motion from the corner of your eyes, when you hear a phantom chuff or a silent doggy sigh, when you feel his eyes upon you and it smells like he's still there, mourn ye not too long, for he is waiting for you, elsewhere.

Blogger Newscaper312 November 13, 2019 5:53 PM

Sorry for the loss, and it is a real one.
Had a couple cats at different times over the years, strays we took in, ultimately becoming house cats. We were lucky enough to have ones that were more affectionate than most, a bit more like a dog. A cat was less of a commitment - we literally took a week to go to Disney World once, and just stocked up the food and water and a couple extra litter boxes and the cat was fine.
Had to put them both down, with first one most difficult as he really was sort of our surrogate child.
Second cat showed up, less than a year old per the vet, when wife was pregnant with our son.
Finally got our first dog when son was in HS, as a puppy, a Boston Terrier. There really is so much more to the relationship with a good dog. She just turned 5 so I hope we get 10 more years with her, and I know it will be terribly hard on us, particularly my wife, when the time comes.
Our priest's take on family pets was that, no, they don't "go to heaven"... but when *we* get to heaven and it would make us happy, surely it is in God's power to bring them back to us if He wishes.

Blogger Heian-kyo Dreams November 13, 2019 5:54 PM

And storied urns record who rests below.
When all is done, upon the Tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his Master’s own,
Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonoured falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the Soul he held on earth –
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.

Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power –
Who knows thee well, must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy tongue hypocrisy, thy heart deceit!
By nature vile, ennobled but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye, who behold perchance this simple urn,
Pass on – it honours none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend’s remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one -- and here he lies.

My condolences to you and your family, Vox.

Nothing made me lose respect for Matt Walsh like when he posted some gamma-tier comments against dogs on Twitter. Never trust a man who isn't comfortable with Man's Best Friend.

Also there's some commenters mourning or preparing to--condolences offered to them as well.

I'm so sorry for your lost. I know he is in good company now, and he will never suffer pain or injury again. They're just too good for this fallen world, so their tours of duty are (for us) painfully short. That's my belief, at least. I've said a prayer for your beloved, now resting, champion, and for your and your family's hearts.

Losing a dog is hard. We lost our QBit in September. I still catch myself separating out four little bits of scrambled eggs for treats at breakfast, instead of three.

Our condolences and best wishes.

I can't read Ancient Roman epitaphs to their dogs without bawling like a baby:

Knowing that they cared just as much for their pets thousands of years ago as we do today, shows us we have a lot more in common with them than we think.

For the fate of the sons of men and the fate of beasts is the same. As one dies so dies the other; indeed, they all have the same breath and there is no advantage for man over beast, for all is vanity. All go to the same place. All came from the dust and all return to the dust. Who knows that the breath of man ascends upward and the breath of the beast descends downward to the earth? -- Ecclesiastes 3:19

Blogger Lazarus November 13, 2019 9:45 PM

Sorry, man. Dogs are part of the team. Cats don't know what a team is.

I appreciate dogs more as an adult than when I was a child.

Dogs KNOW when humans have the encoded script for authentic empathy. If both the dog and human find each other it's a blessing. Not everyone gets to experience this and those that do are changed for the better forever. It's a bond that's never forgotten and as the years progress the memories only grow more meaningful.

Sorry for your loss and also happy for you and the dog that you experienced this blessing in your lives.

Blogger Connie November 13, 2019 10:26 PM

So sorry for your loss. I lost my feline friend three days ago; I was with him when his heart was stopped.

I think most humans know this grief because we outlive our animal friends.

Blogger Brad November 13, 2019 10:33 PM

Blogger James November 13, 2019 10:43 PM

Condolences Vox. Maybe in the future we could explore how the relationship between humans and dogs disprove TENS. It would serve neither man nor dog to evolve the way we have. At any rate, peace and comfort to your family.
