Dostoevsky knew the Gamma

From The Brothers Karamazov:

"Above all, don't lie to yourself. The man who lies to himself and listens to his own lie comes to such a pass that he cannot distinguish the truth within him, or around him, and so loses all respect for himself and for others. And having no respect he ceases to love, and in order to occupy and distract himself without love he gives way to passions and coarse pleasures, and sinks to bestiality in his vices, all from continual lying to other men and to himself. The man who lies to himself can be more easily offended than any one. You know it is sometimes very pleasant to take offense, isn't it? A man may know that nobody has insulted him, but that he has invented the insult for himself, has lied and exaggerated to make it picturesque, has caught at a word and made a mountain out of a molehill--he knows that himself, yet he will be the first to take offense, and will revel in his resentment till he feels great pleasure in it, and so pass to genuine vindictiveness."

This pleasure in taking offense and revelling in resentment explains the way in which anklebiters will continue their delusional hate campaigns for years. The hatred they feel is not only justified by the imaginary offenses of those they hate, it gives a perverse pleasure to them. This is why it is totally pointless to respond to their demands or even to pay any attention to them, as it is the taking offense that is the entire point of the exercise for them. Once the nominal issue is successfully addressed, they will simply move the goal posts and take offense at something else, in order to keep feeding their emotional addiction.

Never, ever, ever lie to yourself, no matter how painful the truth may be. No matter how much shame in telling the truth to yourself.

Action creates repetition creates habit creates character creates destiny. And the only escape from a bad habit is being honest with yourself about it, so the only escape from the habit of lying to yourself is divine intervention.

Very good quote. When someone points out their lies standard answers in my experience are:
- So you really are suggesting I am not telling the truth?
- So you really think I would have done something like that?
- How dare you to insinuate X?
- I did so much for you selflessly, and now you are accusing me of Y?

Why do you suppose women are like that? Just their natural love for drama, and shittesting?

Gammas are so horribly warped and deranged. No shame.

It has been a while since I read Brothers Karamazov, and there were characters aplenty. The most wretched major one obviously is Smerdyakov. But I remember also hating Rakitin. He's the one who tries to corrupt Alyosha. Specifically by setting him up with a particular girl. I forget whom.

At one point, suggestion of possible infatuation is turned back upon Rakitin, who blurts out something about coveting her money, too. As if someone were to say: "You're probably a virgin," and you were to respond: "Yeah, as if! I bet I want to sleep with my mom, too!" Excuse me? That was kinda outta nowhere.

The self-exposing outburst. That's one of their tells, isn't it?

Dostoyevsky was a master at distinguishing characters through speech patterns, and as we all know one way to pick out gammas is by the Wall of Text/ speech. We get some text, and thus may discern graphomania in some characters. More often it's a matter of "diarrhea mouth."

"Pressured speech," as one finds in bipolar disorder, is often on display. To the extent that the books move me to want to physically shut various characters up. Or "thrash" them, as the novels might put it.

Tangentially related q: are modern editions of Crime&Punishment ruined the same as classical Western literature over the years has been?

Almost bought a copy the other day but seeing the year 2018 on the cover reminded me of the Junior Classics campaign here, how they had been "reformed" by publishers.

So I'd appreciate any insight on this, thanks.

What is the difference between a Gamma and Omega's lies? Does the Gamma lie to protect his ego while the Omega lies to avoid past trauma?

The truth does set you free even if it has to throw you down several flights of stairs before kicking you outside.

Blogger buzzardist February 11, 2020 6:52 AM

Father Zosima is the man, and The Brothers Karamazov is one of, if not the, best and most important novels in existence. The study of characters, ideas, culture, and spirituality is unparalleled. It's not a book for the weak-minded, but it is a towering display of literary skill. Ivan's sweeping argument against God from the existence of evil later in the book often gets excerpted in philosophy classes, but the atheist philosophers never put the argument in its literary context. Ivan, like his father, is one of these liars, dishonest to himself. It warps him into a troll. Ivan's character is apparent before he rages against God. Zosima, who occupies most of the very next chapter, sweeps away Ivan's rantings as warped human vanity in a few strokes, replacing Ivan's disbelief and self lies with a Christian foundation for human existence.

Blogger FrankNorman February 11, 2020 7:04 AM

The difference, I think, is that an Omega avoids society, so any lies he tells would be only to himself.
The Gamma needs to convince others of the lies he tells himself.

What's needed are situations where lies get costly.

@MATT:

I believe that they literally can't help it. The women that could introspect had less kids.

Consider their inability to tell men how to be more attractive. Their advice literally begins and ends with brushing and flossing, yet that doesn't even appear to be a factor in who they bang.

So my interpretation is that all of the women with self-awareness were talked into revealing how they could be fooled, and then were and had inferior offspring, so their DNA died out.

It is going to be very interesting to go back and re-read many novels from the past, this time with a SSH criticism. It seems the gamma may be the preferred aim of the worldly powers and principalities, and if we assume Satan tries to twist us into his image (in vain mockery of God), perhaps we may cast Lucifer as the first Gamma?
This type of criticism at the very least leads to some interesting theses.

I think that you're close but not quite there. The gamma lies to himself first and then to others -- in the best-case scenario, trying to fake it until he makes it -- while the omega is simply broken and doesn't know the truth.

Blogger Shane Bradman February 11, 2020 8:11 AM

Anyone who enjoys being offended has something wrong with them. The most recently I was offended was when someone asked if I was Jewish. It was an innocent and honest question, but that doesn't make it any less offensive. It's a bad feeling to be offended.

Dostoevsky is a great writer but I struggled very hard to read Crime and Punishment. I hated it the whole way through. Raskolnikov is an intensely insufferable 'man' and I was hoping he would get his just desserts every page I read.

Blogger FUBARwest February 11, 2020 8:16 AM

Interesting how there are mirrors in the SSH in some of the behavioral patterns between omegas and sigmas and in gammas and alphas. The first thing that came to mind about lying to oneself about offenses was Michael Jordan inventing things to be offended by for motivation.

Blogger The Cooler February 11, 2020 8:21 AM

I get the impression Omegas have a sort of hyperaesthesia of the soul, whereas Gammas are just muddled six ways from Sunday.

As such, the lies of the Omega are likely defensive in nature and occur when he makes his occasional fores into The World. The lies of the Gamma, on the other hand, are offensive, but nonetheless effete -- nefarious... bitch-made, for lack of a better way of putting it at the moment.

Blogger David Ray Milton February 11, 2020 8:22 AM

This is my favorite passage from that book!

I usually recall it when thinking about the importance of telling the truth. I had forgotten about the taking offense part of the quote, but now I remember. I read this book during the time when “I’m offended by that” was becoming a common phrase in my age group and thought there must have been a lot of self-delusion present. Looking back on it, the intelligentsia university culture I was apart of at the time was one giant pool of gammas.

Blogger FrankNorman February 11, 2020 8:31 AM

So my interpretation is that all of the women with self-awareness were talked into revealing how they could be fooled, and then were and had inferior offspring, so their DNA died out.

That theory would require that the genes for self-awareness are different for females than for males.

Also, that women got to choose their mates. For most of human history... not really.

Blogger tublecane February 11, 2020 8:38 AM

@7- And of course Ivan is not an atheist. I don't think. He is a liar, so I can't say for certain.

Atheists use the "suffering of one little girl" argument to say, "*if* God exists, then he's a bastard." Ivan says: " God does exist, and he's a bastard."

Atheists are like Smerdyakov, who hears Ivan's thoroughly rational humbug and thinks, "Cool, then I can do whatever I want!"

Blogger Johnny February 11, 2020 8:49 AM

I saw a movie once staring Dustin Hoffman that addressed this issue. It was a long lost father who wanted to offer some sage advice to his son. (As though you can.) Being a run for profit movie, they didn't get preachy. He said something like, " In life we all have to discover the level of bull shit that is right for us." So, what is your level of bull shit gamma? Or is it sigma? ;^)

There are two ways of gaining social status. One is accomplishment, make yourself bigger. And the other is deprecation. Make the other person smaller. The other smaller is easier and quicker, but it tends to be destructive.

Blogger SciVo February 11, 2020 9:03 AM

@FrankNorman:

That theory would require that the genes for self-awareness are different for females than for males.

And? Men and women clearly relate to others differently, and when you are relating to yourself, it is necessarily as an other (or it would be ising, not relating). So therefore, it is reasonable to expect men and women to relate to themselves differently, and the burden would be on you to demonstrate why they should be the same.

Also, that women got to choose their mates. For most of human history... not really.

What, you don't think momma -- who by the way was female -- had any influence over the guy d___ing her every night?

Do you even human?

I think this is why I have trouble with #GamerGate or #ComicsGate whatehaveyou. In the beginning they do seem a revelatory with meaningful purpose but later they seem driven by petty outrage merchants and narcissists.

Blogger ScottC February 11, 2020 9:36 AM

You are beating a dead horse at this point. You have to produce material that these people enjoy, like comic books, or Star Wars fan fiction, or video games, and use it to help them pop their delusion bubbles.

Blogger Scuzzaman February 11, 2020 10:16 AM

There’s definitely people in hollyweird who know this stuff. In the original “Independence Day” film there’s a scene in the newsroom/talk show studio where the science guy is saying that the aliens could be dangerous and the Berkeley professor archetype goes:

“Oh that’s so offensive!”

Right before the aliens pull the trigger.

Blogger Joe Smith February 11, 2020 10:50 AM

@20 It's strange to see the feminist line becoming "standard" knowledge. Obviously women had (and even more obviously have) a whole lot to say about who their mates were (and are). Bottle up that feminist propaganda and observe reality. Especially, but not exclusively, in the west.

Blogger rotekz February 11, 2020 10:53 AM

Dostoevsky also knew the Jew. His diaries are absolutely scathing towards them.

Blogger Capital6 February 11, 2020 10:54 AM

@SciVo

So something along conscious (Gamma) and unconscious (Omega) lying.

An example would be trying to garner sympathy by saying you were beaten as a child when you only really got smacked in the back of the head on occassion (Gamma) versus saying that you had a good, normal childhood even though you were beaten daily because that was your normal and everyone in your life portrayed it as such.

That does make sense. There is a moment in The Last Closet where Moira finally realizes the extent of the abuse and breaks down for a while. I can picture that happening to an Omega.

Thank you for the insight.

For the secret kings, I guess.

Walter: Those stories about Africa . . . about you . . . they’re true, aren’t they?

Hub: Doesn’t matter.

Walter: It does too. Around my mom all I hear is lies. I don’t know what to believe.

Hub: Damn, if you want to believe in something then believe in it. Just because something isn’t true that’s no reason you can’t believe in it.

Hub: There’s a long speech I give to young men. Sounds like you need to hear a piece of it. Just a piece.

Hub: Sometimes, the things that may or may not be true are the things that a man needs to believe in the most. That people are basically good. That honor, courage, and virtue mean everything. That power and money, money and power, mean nothing. That good always triumphs over evil, and I want you to remember this, that love . . . true love, never dies. You remember that, boy. Remember that. Doesn’t matter if it’s true or not, you see. A man should believe in those things because . . . those are the things worth believing in.

Case in point, the anklebiting Gammas defaming UTV.

They call it a scam, acting like they are nobly concerned for the subscribers not getting any value for their money.

In the same breath, they'll call those same subscribers paypiggies, hating them for continuing to support UTV content creation and undermining the "scam" narrative.

Genuine nobility would have pity on the supposedly scammed, but the hatred and desire to take offense leaks out.

Another example: People are hating My Hero Academia (Japanese superhero cartoon) because some characters share a birthday with Hitler and other WWII Axis leaders.

Blogger hopefulgamma February 12, 2020 2:04 AM

Some gamma behavior can be caused by intestinal parasites. These worms can reprogram you brain and cause poor behavior. Drinking turpentine has been proven by many including the Big Bear himself to kill these worms that are hacking you brain. You should take a teaspoon of white sugar to draw out the worms then take turpentine. There are probably other protocols that could also work. Perhaps red wine or some vinegar could also help. Maybe vox could recommend a good wine to use with turpentine. When big bear first starting telling everyone about it I was skeptical but I thought I might as well try it. I have been taking it for three days now and at first it didn't do much but on the 3rd day I noticed a change in my bowel movements due to the dead parasites. Also on the 3rd day I awoke with more energy than normal. I am excited to keep going and see just how much better I can feel.
