Addio, open borders

At long last, the rotting intellectual corpse of David Ricardo is finally buried:
France, Germany and Bulgaria today blocked travel even within the free-moving Schengen zone as the EU proposed barring all overseas visitors from entering for 30 days to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

Border guards were seen across the continent tonight locking off the crossings between Spain and France, Portugal and Spain, Switzerland and France, and in Germany's northern coastal states police prepared to block tourism.
It's probably too optimistic to assume that the econonazis will not start pushing for open borders and the free movement of people the moment the health crisis is over, but at least we will have a powerful rhetorical argument to utilize against them.

I was thinking this will create am overwhelming urge to virtue signal in ways that would cause their European ancestors to rise up in civil war against their own progeny.

If we get a travel ban but with open borders at the same time, we will reach peak stupidity and I'll doubt the President has any real control. The left worships those open borders like they worship abortion.

Let's hope Corona-chan evades the partial shutdown due to the "my trivial plans will NOT be interrupted" crowd, so that she lingers on for for a good 6 months or more.

My suspicion is it will hopefully between household members, and there will still be latent cases (new ones) undetected when the governments declare "back to business as usual."

This shutdown would have to last a good 6-8 weeks, with the last 3 including grocery stores and pharmacies to truly burn it out.

But not even Trump has the guts to make that call yet. Only Jair "my first act as President would be to execute the entire Congress" Bolsanaro and Rodrigo "I'll shoot my ambushes myself" Surety have the spine and balls to make that call. But I'm not sure Bolsanaro or Duterte are smart enough to see the need.

With France locking down, do you think it will help them address the issue of all the migrants living in their streets?

Blogger Stilicho March 17, 2020 8:17 AM

Indeed. "The free movement of goods and viruses" will not be as popular as it previously was.

"Ricardian virus" is ok, but is too much of an inside baseball term.

Prefering "virus-free trade" over free trade may become a thing as well.

Is there a migrant of the year award we can give Corona Chan?

They will try to get it all back, but I think it'll be a hard sell. People are going to realize it's nice to see manufacturing jobs popping up in their communities, and for young people to be able to get summer and starter jobs again. They're already wondering why in the heck we let diseased people into the country so easily. That started with AIDS because AIDS had civil rights, but it's been sort of forgotten since then. It won't be forgotten this time.

Gives the term "Executive Branch" a whole new connotation.

The Globalists have trillions of dollars a year to create and spread their narrative and unless people step up the disqualifying and discrediting efforts we will be right back in the sh*t soup after this wanes.

A million conservative spergs will type a out million 5000 word essays on Ricardo's Retardo work but the media hate machine will spew "racist" and all those essays will be for naught. I say that because that is what the Globalists and their hate machine is doing on twitter at this moment.

So far wuhan flu looks far less deadly in the US than swine flu from 2009 plus it targets those over 65 rather than those under. It's to early to say if that comparison will hold.

Statists and globalists will, naturally, attempt to use the reaction to the virus to condition everyone to the "new normal" of lockdowns and manufactured shortages. The ride never ends.

Speaking with a hospital administrator she said they think while children do not experience much in the way of symptoms they also appear to be more persistent carriers, shedding virus for longer periods than adults do. It's probably not a good idea to take a vaccine that is rushed out the door and has Bill Gates' fingerprints on it. It'll probably be a magical globohomo potion put of D&D. You'll be gay and sterile if you are white.
But the best "take take their ideals and rub their big noses in it" answer to cries for "herd immunity" will be "my body my choice".

Doktor Jeep,

I have lain awake at night these past two years, wondering that it wouldn’t be the disease so much as the cure/vaccine that wrote our end.

The vaccine would prevent infection, but cause mass sterility.

This is paranoia, and folly, and crazy talk. And wishful thinking.

But, the pace at which this easily transmissible but low mortality virus has caused us to clamor for containment (ok) and cure (vaccines, shots) is alarming.

I might have a lot of status quo to fight.

Some people are seeing small business opportunities and a chance to strengthen their communities, while others worry about government curfews and forced vaccinations. I can't say the latter are *wrong* to consider those possibilities, but I think we'd win more if we had more focus on the former. People are who they are, though.

I'm all in favour of closing the borders - this is some additional information on the virus:

... from Rome, 13 March 2020, Agenzia Nova: "Coronavirus: ISS [Italian National Institute of Health]: in Italy there are only two deaths ascertained so far due to Covid-19"

"There may be only two people who died from coronavirus in Italy, who did not present other pathologies. This is what emerges from the medical records examined so far by the Higher Institute of Health, according to what was reported by the President of the Institute [Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), Italian National Institute of Health], Silvio Brusaferro, during the press conference held today at the Civil Protection in Rome. 'Positive deceased patients have an average of over 80 years - 80.3 to be exact...The majority of these people are carriers of chronic diseases. Only two people were not presently carriers of [other non-COV] diseases', but even in these two cases, the examination of the files is not concluded and therefore, causes of death different from Covid-19 could emerge. The president of the ISS has specified that 'little more than a hundred medical records' have so far come from hospitals throughout Italy."

Interesting.

The "Stargate SG-1" Episode "2010" explored this phenomenon. An alien race made contact with earth and gave humanity all sorts of medical technology, only to find that that technology was slowly causing decimation of the human race via sterilization.

One of the frustrating ways this is playing out are all the special exceptions and sacrifices that the younger generations need to make for the Boomers, Silents, and remaining Greatest generation individuals.

These people have already lived through the peak of US and human civilization and the greatest multi-decade economic expansion in the history of the world. How much more do they need to extract from their time on this planet?

To have to forego socializing at the trendy brewpub for the next two weeks is agonizing to degrees not even endured by Christ, Himself, during his scourging and crucifixion.

This??

This from the extremely intelligent author of THE definitive tomes on the deranged yet ruthless mentality of Social Justice Warriors?

Substitute the word "delusional" for "optimistic" and the semantics will then probably be a bit more accurate.

However, the arguments for closed borders will now be more appealing to the midwits and normies as a result of cornona chan, so there's that.

@30 - Thanks to other posters here, I've become aware of the large ethnic Chinese population in Italian provinces where the Italian epicenter is for Corona.

I am especially curious as to the full breakdown of age, sex, ethnicity, general health (including weight & general fitness, smoking or no, drinking or no, acute and chronic health problems) of the patients who were entered into the ICU and who perished from the disease.

Most have read or at least heard of the tweets of doctor(s) in Italy describing just how bad things are in those province(s). Again, I'm curious as to just who and what groups are in there.

If it's majority ethnic Chinese laborers and 70 and 80+ year old Italians, I'd like to know. It would put things in perspective.

The WSJ has an interesting story how Corona is causing generational warfare because young people are still going out and holding illegal "lockdown" parties.

As a late Gen Xer I was also excited that Marketwatch simply acknowledged we exist with their story how Xer latchkey kids have the right disposition for quarantine.

Finally, I was thinking, using 1964, the youngest Boomers are only 56. There are also significant numbers of early Xers (64-68) that strongly identify with the Boomers. Because of this, Corona-chan may not provide as much relief as was previously thought.

Yes, 100,000 plus Chinese workers in Northern Italy from ... you guessed it, Wuhan China, where a number traveled back and forth fairly often. The Chinese as a group are incredibly heavy smokers still in these modern times, and they tend to smoke very harsh tobacco, and start at a young age. The damage to lungs suggested on here with 'recovered CV-19 virus' is exactly the same as in a lung scan of a very heavy smoker that started young. Wuhan may look modern, but the average Chinese attitude in China's industrial cities is almost frontier or like an American in the late 19th century. Tough and unhealthy.

We'll never get to see those stats you desire, because raciss, and xenophobic.

Anyhow, we should not care, as this is all hurting the Globalists by far the most. Cool!

The problem with the Ricardo, like Smith, is you only hear the parts the Globalists want you to.

Yes. In college I was once assigned to present a report on an essay by David Ricardo. It turned out to be an essay about how the economic interests of landlords run counter to the interests of almost everyone else. Anybody living in a real-estate-crazed coastal city will be aware of that, although IIRC Ricardo concentrated on agricultural landlords.

And yes also to Adam Smith. My favorite Smith quote for people who think he's just a Wall Street shill, from The Wealth of Nations Book III Chapter II:

The pride of man makes him love to domineer, and nothing mortifies him so much
as to be obliged to condescend to persuade his inferiors. Wherever the law allows it, and the nature of the work can afford it, therefore, he will generally prefer the service of slaves to that of freemen.
