I could use a week off

An enforced vacation from the gym:
Nella regione Lombardia e in provincia di Piacenza
In tali territori si applica altresì la misura della sospensione delle attività di palestre, centri sportivi, piscine, centri natatori, centri benessere, centri termali (fatta eccezione per l’erogazione delle prestazioni rientranti nei «livelli essenziali di assistenza»), centri culturali, centri sociali, centri ricreativi.
The schools are also closed through 8 March. Keep in mind that something like this is probably going to happen near you, sooner or later, if the situation in Washington is not unique.
The coronavirus has been circulating undetected and has possibly infected scores of people over the past six weeks in Washington state, according to a genetic analysis of virus samples that has sobering implications for the entire country amid heightening anxiety about the likely spread of the disease.

The researchers conducted genetic sequencing of two virus samples. One is from a patient who traveled from China to Snohomish County in mid-January and was the first person diagnosed with the disease in the United States. The other came from a recently diagnosed patient in the same county, a high school student with no travel-related or other known exposure to the coronavirus. The two samples look almost identical genetically, said Trevor Bedford, a computational biologist at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle who announced the results of the research on Twitter late Saturday night.

“This strongly suggests that there has been cryptic transmission in Washington State for the past 6 weeks,” Bedford wrote. “I believe we’re facing an already substantial outbreak in Washington State that was not detected until now due to narrow case definition requiring direct travel to China.”

One more reason to use the gym as long it is possible.

In Nordrhein-Westfalen there are already more than 60 cases and people are not panicking, but the few prepper around were enough for me to register a sudden rise in demand for Vitamin C powder and soap. I've seen on Saturday a guy who bought toilet paper, bottled water for maybe 3 weeks and 5 big bottles of liquid soap. These are very very sporadic examples, but I guess that if only 5% percent of people would begin prepping, this would launch an avalanche on the supermarkets.

Time to declare martial law. Quarantine everyone coming into the country, and anyone showing signs of the disease. Track down and kill everyone who was worried about racism being as bad as the disease.
Also, hope you're better getting back into your exercise routine than some of us, SDL!

First three cases hit the Czech Republic yesterday. Two were Czechs who had visited Italy and one was an American college girl studying in Milan. Prague was just too beautiful for her to miss out on, so she came for a visit and was wandering the streets when her symptoms started presenting. As to the Czechs in general, there have been plenty of them that paid for their ski trips in northern Italy and they are still going this week despite the warnings not to. My wife and I both have clients who have stated they are going on vacation to various infected areas around the world. There are also many who have just come back this past weekend. Looks like online meetings will be the norm for the foreseeable future.

People were talking last week about supermarkets having bare shelves before this hit here. There have also been some reports of media clearing shelves to make things looks worse than they are. So far I have only seen things such as disinfectants and hand sanitizers sold out in the brick and mortar shops, but the online food delivery supermarkets were out of several canned and dried goods as well as lower priced bottled water.

I'm surely preaching to the choir here, but if you are relatively near an affected area, yesterday was the time to stock up on supplies.

The idiocy could be placed on the idiocy, but even with the high probability, it is improbable. At least the blue cities will get whatever comes, first. But there will be no containment (even if it were possible).

A news report about it came on the TV at the bar last night, and they made sure to emphasize the "but THIS many die of the flu each year" comparison. Most people seemed to nod along as intended, agreeing that it's no big deal; but a few understood that the ease of transmission is important, and just because a number is small now isn't proof that it will stay small. There's a growing wariness, at least.

I think I also saw an ad, either for Mini-Mike or for the Democrats in general, saying that we're not prepared for Corona-Chan because Trump. That's getting pretty desperate, to hope for a plague to win an election, plus that's not how voters think.

For those who don't know, some detail,

The stuff has a long latency period. People who catch the flu are spreading it for a week or two before they know they have it. And spreads easily. That is, extremely contagious.

Not as lethal as reported early on, but still very dangerous for old folks, and anybody with lung issues. Plus because it kills by pneumonia, serious cases spend time in a hospital and use up scarce medical resources. On the other end of it, children may get to spread it, but are almost immune to it.

The little face masks help some, but keeping your hands clean and away from the nose or mouth is a big deal.

Reported death rate is all over the place at this time, and most of the numbers are scare numbers, bigger than the actual death rate with medical care. A wild guess, maybe one or two percent lethal for the general population, with a much higher fraction put in the hospital. Lacking good medical care, the death rate goes up a lot.

Being in the old guy category, if it gets around where I live, I will be self quarantined from a gym for months at a time. And at least semi quarantined from most other places. The vaccine for the stuff is for now only speculation.

Blogger Arthur Isaac March 02, 2020 8:51 AM

At this point I think it causes an autoimmune deficiency and that the weird delays and asymptomatic transmission is because it isn't a flu. It doesn't hit like a flu or a cold. What we do notice are the secondary infections. Like how people noticed HIV by the presence of the otherwise rare Kaposi sarcoma. The initial "catch" is so mild nobody notices but the pneumococcal pneumonia kills you weeks or months later.

That and a R0 of 4-6 and I think we can say we're living in interesting times.

Blogger Mjoll March 02, 2020 8:57 AM

I'm pretty sure this swept through Oregon in early January and has not left. 8 weeks of shifting illness and a brutal cough.

Blogger Canada78Bear March 02, 2020 9:01 AM

This would seem to indicate the death rate is lower than reported. An unknown number of asymptomatic are not being factored in. Hopefully the control group in Korea (religious group) that has 80+% infected with a large no symptom group will be tracked and we know in 10 more days how deadly it really is.

Everyone I met at the convention there has since come down with this bug. If it is/was the 'wuhan flu' then it was terribly oversold. Yes, I spent two weeks sick, but that was it. This. And the Chinese and Indians who've colonized Canada frequently cross the border in search of bargains or to purchase items banned by their woke government, or so I've read. I really doubt it's avoidable anywhere in America because I don't know that there are many counties in the country that are Chinese or Indian free, and they tend to travel in packs. I've always carried a tube of disinfectant wipes in my gym bag and use them, primarily because of the diverse clientele and because the squatemalan cleaning lady doesn't inspire me with any great confidence. I do have a bench and some weights at home, but not the variety of cable machines and other things I prefer. Well, when/if things close I'll adapt as necessary. Late Sunday, the office of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican, announced two “presumptively positive” cases of the coronavirus, in Manatee and Hillsborough counties, and declared a public health emergency.
Metro Tampa. The “presumptively positive” means that they have been tested at local hospitals, but have not been confirmed positive by the CDC in Atlanta. Considering the fatalities have been people over 50 this could be a real mess should it spread throughout the state (it ain't called "God's waiting room" for nothing. The Central FL theme parks are in "hurricane mode" IOW, normal operations until further notice.
The good news is Corona-chan seems to be leaving kids alone. It's the oldsters (especially with existing health issues) that have something to worry about.

Yeah that's odd. A child will be inconsolable if they have a fever whereas an adult can have one and not even notice until the sweat starts to cool into the chills.

Then again I was at the ER on 2 January and there was a Philipino teen with his barely communicative but quite entitled mom presenting to the ER because he was hot. She needed tylenol and ice and tried to triage him herself. The nurses were not happy with her. Strange.

Not quite, though the number is very low. One study through 2/11 estimated 1% of patients were in the 0-9 year old range, and another 1% in the 10-19 year old range. A separate study focused solely on infants identified only 9 cases.

Children can be infected and therefore be carriers to infect others. Thankfully, no children have yet died from the outbreak.

A: Limited reports of children with COVID-19 in China have described cold-like symptoms, such as fever, runny nose, and cough. Gastrointestinal symptoms (vomiting and diarrhea) have been reported in at least one child with COVID-19. These limited reports suggest that children with confirmed COVID-19 have generally presented with mild symptoms, and though severe complications (acute respiratory distress syndrome, septic shock) have been reported, they appear to be uncommon. I buy steel and poly carbonite from China, SK, and Mex for a living. Since Dec when Corona Chan was first known about, I have opened dozens of boxes from Beijing and nearby provinces. Most have been sample materials, but a number were Christmas presents.
I first got sick in mid January and got better rather quickly for me, because I have lung issues. The 1st of Feb I got sick again, this time it was horrible. I was diagnosed as having "the flu" on February 3rd.
I haven't left my house since, but I AM STILL SICK.
Did I get Corona from touching a huge pile of boxes? Extremely doubtful. That said, my son and his fiance who never catch anything both got sick from just visiting me for about an hour, on Valentine's Day & they both are constantly dealing with the dirty public.
Who knows how long 8t has really been here,my doctors office certainly wasn't testing for it then nor did they even mention it as a possibility.
All this is to say,I feel confident that Corona Chan came to a lot of countries much earlier and no one tested for it and assumed it was the regular old flu. That would explain why we supposedly had a "really rough flu season this year" like the CDC said in January.
BTW,my garage has another huge stack of boxes from China.

I only understood mess hall in your comment but I presume you're talking about work camps or army/navy/airman life. When I was in Scouts our mess kits were examined before meals. No clean kit, then you got razzed in front of everyone AND had to eat standing up out of a mug with no utensils. Cleanliness really is a group effort especially in close quarters.

That said, seeing the sanitizer beside the dogwood symbolizing rebirth on the first Lenten Sunday kind of really fit the mood, the sermon on Cain's sin, and the sacrament we take weekly. From spiritual cleanliness comes bodily cleanliness.

China's death rate, whatever that may be, is the zero medical care death rate.

After our hospitals fill to overflowing and the staff are all sick, our death rate becomes the zero medical care death rate, not only for Corona-chan, but for everything that usually puts folks in the hospital. We don't need it to be very bad for it to be this bad.

Aesop thinks there might be about 930K hospital beds in the US, and 93K ICU beds. If only 20% of our 300 million get this at one time, that's 60 million. If only 2% of them need hospitalization at the same time, that's 1.2 million. That's on top of all the other problems that keep most of those hospital beds filled most of the time.

93 thousand ICU beds, some cots in the corridor, and the rest of the 1.2 million can save money by dying at home, like it or not.

"Not really since the coronavirus is a giant nothing burger"

this is a spectacularly stupid thing to say. You clearly really suck at math.

"This strongly suggests that there has been cryptic transmission in Washington State for the past 6 weeks,"

Love the way they slip the shiv in like this. So smooth you hardly notice.

Is this the only possibility it suggests?

"Are there no others?"

I was in two different Costcos of two separate counties. First one over 1,000 people mostly Chinese stocking up. Stripped clean rice toilet paper, paper towels, sanitizers, and much much more. Never seen it like that.
Second was with my family to double stock up. Stripped beyond case one above, this time mostly Indian families. My wife is now gravely we began prepping two weeks ago.

Our county has nine cases already but I expect we should multiply that by 50.

My sister and parents live in Snohomish. Mom had diabetes, and Dad had a brain surgery 10 years ago. Both were notified today that they had been exposed.

Mom is freaking out. Dad told me what songs he wants at his funeral in Nebraska, and asked for more ice cream.

Two weeks ago my sister was demanding we come out and visit. I told her I wasn't going near Seattle or King county till this bug goes away. Now she is looking at sheltering in place.

All fun and games, till it gets close to home. Parents are ready to go "see Jesus", but that doesn't mean they want to go that way.

I suspect that it will be more than a week off, not that I imagine Vox will actually kick back and relax!

The most amazing coincidence: just as our Dark Lord has been defending sky puppies as our frens, the govt is minting a *sky puppy* Beautiful quarter!!

Can confirm. Am now not linking to the Herald or Fairfax news. exists to stop their revenue streams.

The Iranian vector in NZ is probably the one to worry about: the People's Republic of China is not letting witnesses (read students) out.

Despite the pleading of out too big to fail universities.

I assume by now the NZ Govt/media have fully informed all Kiwis about the Christchurch mystery car FQH875.

@Redjack. Sad news. Praying for your family and you all.

Looking at the “official” Chinese numbers of confirmed, recovered, and existing, aside from Hubei, China is about to be in a position of claiming not only “Contained,” but almost fully recovered. Pretty close to time to announce it is back open for business and pumping out exports. A couple of weeks more of shortages, and the cargo carriers can hit the seas to save the markets of the West from domestic Western production revamp, in about a month. Whatever is going on in China, their infection numbers output paints a narrative.

Blogger xevious2030 March 04, 2020 4:15 PM

Outside China, in Italy, with real numbers, the R0 follows an infection of 2.5, with a cycle of three days. And of course the mortality rate of 3% under the current treatment stresses.

Those are not nothing burger numbers. Reveling in fear is pointless, but avoiding fear does not mean dismissing reality.

Good thing I have enough fresh caught Alaskan Salmon, Cod, and Halibut in my freezer that my family can die from mercury poisoning before we all starve.

Couldn't say it better myself. I see all these pictures of empty store shelves but nothing has changed in my area
