Italy don't need no education

All the schools and universities in Italy are closed until the Ides of March:
Scuole e università chiuse per coronavirus in tutta Italia dal 5 al 15 marzo.
I can't even imagine how happy this would have made me as a kid.... In considerably more important news, Serie A will continue, but the games will be played a porte chiuse, which is to say, in empty stadiums.

And all the Italian homeschooled kids are banging their heads against their desks as Momma keeps cracking the whip.

My high school was closed for a month my junior year due to local flooding. It was glorious.

Think of the productivity gains throughout the economy if all "non-essential" personnel were to stay home for three months.

Blogger YIH March 04, 2020 9:11 AM
Not so fast, looks like they're still mulling it over.

Blogger Brett baker March 04, 2020 9:15 AM

Parasites gotta eat too, ya know!

Blogger Akulkis March 04, 2020 9:22 AM

Somehow, the HR hags will always manage to designate ALL of themselves as "essential" even though it only requires 1 person to run payroll.

The Arnold Schwarzenegger event in Columbus canceled spectators participation due to worries.

I suspect Corona-chan will be causing LOTS of unforeseen social changes as she continues her World Tour.

Blogger Azimus March 04, 2020 10:20 AM

This is starting to feel like the eager anticipation of an Alberta Clipper that is too cold for the buses to run, so no school for 2 days! People are kind of looking forward to it and I think they're kind of playing along wink wink, you know? Of course the historians will frame it as a society paralyzed with fear - but honestly unless you're 80yrs old, BB is right this is a bad common cold.

Vox, is homeschooling done in Italy? Is it even allowed?

Blogger Doktor Jeep March 04, 2020 10:41 AM

One of the failures of conservatism is the emphasis they place on public schools, which was only to play the game. "See? We're for public education too! Please clap".
Public schooling has been for our country what a screen door would be on a submarine. The next constitution needs a separation between school and state clause.

Blogger jamsco March 04, 2020 10:47 AM

Do I remember correctly that in the seventies, President Carter, during the winter of the energy crisis, made everyone take January and February Mondays off and take them in warmer months?

Blogger urthshu March 04, 2020 11:02 AM

It's appropriate. Kids are more vectors than victims for this one.

and the people claiming this whole this is a hoax or a sensationalist media creation are still convincing themselves its all a big lie... and they are the only ones that are smart enough to realize it.

My highschool partially burned down and we got lots of time off. Very fun for us, very unfun for the insurance company. Italians are going to be thrilled.

Blogger bischbubba March 04, 2020 11:28 AM

Hey! Corona-chan! Leave them kids alone!

We're at ground zero for the Washington State outbreak. The hospital where the first US patient died is our local hospital - all of our kids were born there. The local community went from Friday night thinking this was some problem for China to Saturday night having a half dozen dead and schools closing and firefighters being quarantined.

And it's all fun and games until your wife wakes up with flu-like symptoms. I'm not overly freaked out. Our daughter had a non-Corona flu two weeks ago so it's probably that, and the wife doesn't have any underlying medical issues, but it sure ain't a pleasant thought.

Daily Mail really putting the foot on the gas. "Iranians release 50,000 prisoners to stop disease spreading". "Italy to ban kissing". "Mutated coronavirus to make late run for office, Bloomberg gives full backing"

Being a teacher in, guess where, aye Italy, I guess we will make up for these lost days in June. Meaning school will be out a couple of weeks later this year.

There's a bit of confusion about formal- vs. state-sponsored education.
eg: An apprenticeship is literally a formal education, albeit not a state-sponsored one, and typically with more practical-application.

My company's branches in N. Italy and Shanghai are all working remote. Mentions came up regarding it and reviewing for US offices also.

I thought I'd be months to see the effects here, I live in a very small town in the Netherlands. We had the first reported case here just today along with 2 ambulances racing down the main road and a trauma helicopter.
The politicians have been whining for years about pension payments for the elderly going up with a shrinking tax base, this could fix a thing or 2 with some luck. Maybe even lower the retirement age!

Deep State Virus spread by Deep State MSM, corporations, and all the usual suspects. Schools are government. Governments are infested with corruption. World Wars have been orchestrated by these bastards. They will hatch scheme after scheme after scheme to hold on to their power.

Blogger Colonel Blimp March 04, 2020 3:25 PM

I got you all beat. In like 1990 the teachers in my town went on one of the longest strikes for schools in history. We were out of school almost 4 months. We only made up a few days in the summer

In John Boorman's "Hope and Glory" - his Golden-Globe-winning 1987 movie about a boy's life during the London blitz - the 8 year old protagonist sees German fighters bombing his school to flaming rubble and turns his shining face to the sky and cries out: "Oh, thank you, thank you, Mr. Hitler!"

Supposedly this really happened to Boorman. I can't even imagine. Great movie. And yes, that scene got criticized by the usual suspects.

Japanese professional baseball games are currently being played in empty stadiums and the annual high school spring tournament will be played for a tv audience only as well.
