The anosmia omen

If you lost your sense of smell, you may be a corona-chan carrier:
In the areas of Italy most heavily affected by the virus, doctors say they have concluded that loss of taste and smell is an indication that a person who otherwise seems healthy is in fact carrying the virus and may be spreading it to others.

“Almost everybody who is hospitalized has this same story,” said Dr. Marco Metra, chief of the cardiology department at the main hospital in Brescia, where 700 of 1,200 inpatients have the coronavirus. “You ask about the patient’s wife or husband. And the patient says, ‘My wife has just lost her smell and taste but otherwise she is well.’ So she is likely infected, and she is spreading it with a very mild form.”
It might be useful to keep in mind, anyhow. On the plus side, the latest numbers out of Italy may indicate that the peak has been passed, as new cases are down 27 percent and new deaths are down 24 percent since March 21.

Hippies, hip hop and hipsters, they all stink and will never lose their smell, not even amongst the virally affected. Schtinky schtank.

One has to wonder how many deaths are actually corona or something else. Can any "official" stats on this virus be trusted ?

“On re-evaluation by the National Institute of Health, only 12 per cent of death certificates have shown a direct causality from coronavirus, while 88 per cent of patients who have died have at least one pre-morbidity - many had two or three,” he says."

Why have so many coronavirus patients died in Italy?

I have heard Italian leathergoods actually made in Wuhan China. 95% complete in Wuhan then get shipped to Italy for that final 5% so the product can be labelled "made in Italy". Many of these leather workers in Italy are from Wuhan this may explain the novel coronu transfer

Glad to hear that the peak in Italy has passed. Illinois just started full lockdown this weekend, relatively early, so I hope things will pass here soon.

Of closed cases in Italy, the death rate is 45%. Now explain to me again why that shouldn't concern us?

My wife lost her sense of smell after an illness several years ago. Since then it has partially returned; she occasionally gets a whiff of scents like lilacs or coffee brewing, and she reliably reacts to skunk aroma if we drive through it. I hadn't thought of it before, but this was likely the result of a bad cold or flu.

Blogger Newscaper312 March 23, 2020 3:30 PM

@Oswald
The 45% estimated that way is flawed because average time to die vs time to fully recover, once sick enough to go to hospital, are quite different.
Someone with the major preexisting conditions is more likely to succumb fairly quickly. Very rough analogy: Think of the illness as a U shape. People at greatest risk of dying in the trough if they can't make that turn. It takes longer than that to get all the way to the other side. IOW, for people who got more seriously sick at the same time, the recoveries will tend to lag the deaths.

"Of closed cases in Italy, the death rate is 45%. Now explain to me again why that shouldn't concern us?"

That 45% is 6,077 'closed cases' that ended in death. Now add in the 47K known cases considered mild plus the unknown thousands (or tens or hundreds of thousands or millions even - no one knows) of cases where a person was infected but was asymptomatic or had mild enough symptoms they never sought medical attention or testing.

Blogger Starboard March 23, 2020 3:39 PM

Zicam, Coldeeze, and other zinc lozenges can impair sense of smell and taste as well. So if you've been using these products your senses may be impaired from that already.

Yup. There are over 300K Chinese living in Italy, with most of them working in the garment and textile factories in Lombardy (article below). There were direct flights from Milan to Wuhan until January 31, and Chinese New Year was January 25. There were probably hundred or thousands of infected Chinese people coming back to one place, at one time which led to the massive outbreak. On top of that, the mayor of Florence was encouraging people to 'hug a Chinese person' in early February to show how not-racist we can be.

There was never any reason to believe what happened in Lombardy would happen anywhere else once the travel bans were in place

Blogger Bearable Pain March 24, 2020 7:26 AM

When I was very young I had a skateboard accident where I flew off the board when it shot out from under me feet. My head whipped back and I lost consciousness for almost three days. My taste became impaired because my brain slammed into the back of my skull but my head never hit the ground. For three months my taste was impaired along with my sense of smell. Tomatoes tasted like chemical bleach. Eating was hard for awhile because I had no sense of smell. I was 11-12 years old at the time. Eventually it went way and everything was fine so the question is is the corona virus affecting and inflaming the brain? It was explained to me that swelling in the part of the brain that impacted the back of my skull caused the condition - so is Pirbright's light of Corona targeting, enflamming the brain? Well after reading the Pirbright Institute's patent in the fine print I pulled out this quote that referenced encephalitis. What are the conspiracies, I mean connections? I have no idea. But why do some Corona patients have loss of smell and taste? QUOTE:
"The disease may be any disease caused by a coronavirus, such as a respiratory disease and and/or gastroenteritis in humans and hepatitis, gastroenteritis, encephalitis, or a respiratory disease in other animals." Perhaps this sheds some light on the dark light of Pirbright and his coronavirus, owned and patented by one of Rothschild's heirs. https://patents.google.com/patent/US10130701B2/en

With body counts possibly correlated to the number of idiots that hug a Chinese recently arrived from infected Wuhan at the urging of a mayor, import tens of thousands of workers to make geographically-restricted trademarked goods to be marketed at high markups, or turn out in NYC Chinatown in huge crowds to defy highly infectious disease at the urging of retarded public health officials. Among other things.

"Where are you getting that stat? The official rate is 8% of cases."

The official rate is comparing deaths to all on-going cases (which includes people in the process of dying who aren't counted as dead yet)

To get an accurate death rate, your statistics should only use COMPLETED cases -- those which resulted in either death, or the patient has fully recovered.

N(deaths)/N(completed) = Death rate

Government agencies have been computing:

N(dead)/[N(completed)+N(ongoing)]

Garbage in - Garbage out.

In this case, the (wrong) formula itself is part of the garbage.
