Black science fiction matters

These are the actions that SFWA is taking as first steps to clean our own house and work towards making our community safer for Black writers.

  • For the month of June, 100% of registrations for the Nebula Convention content will go directly to the Carl Brandon Society and the Black Speculative Fiction Society.
  • We are creating a matching program for the Nebula convention so that each registration purchased this month creates a seat for a Black writer.
  • For the next year, we are waiving fees for SFWA membership for Black writers.
  • We are waiving registration fees for next year's Nebula conference attendance for Black writers.
  • We are creating a travel fund to help defer the costs of Black writers attending the Nebula conference
  • We are committing to reaching out to Black-led science fiction and fantasy organizations about applying for the additional grant money that we have available.
And here I would have thought handing NK Jemisin the Best Novel Hugo for three straight years would have bought them a certain amount of protection. Apparently not. But wouldn't it be more meaningful if Tor Books agreed to publish only black authors for the next ten years to make up for their past racism?

And, of course, it's a given that they will name Ms Jemisin the 2020 SFWA Grandmaster. Anything less would be r-r-racist!

They should also promise to feature only Black Scifi authors in the front window of Uncle Hugo's bookstore.

Oh, wait....

Blogger Paulito June 04, 2020 9:26 PM

IOW, according to the SFWA, black people are poor and dumb and can't possibly get by without the help of old white people.

Blogger Geir Balderson June 04, 2020 9:40 PM

Good! Now i can get a free ride with my SyFy novel! I will identify as a Nigerian with millions in the bank to share with all of the Judges for the best novel of 2020.

How long will it take for Scalzi to find out her has dark roots?

Blogger tuberman June 04, 2020 9:51 PM

NK Jemisin is old hat, only Black Trannies will do...Oh, Wait.

Blogger Gallant June 04, 2020 9:53 PM

Figured you were making that up. Then I thought it wasn’t very good, an over the top and badly written parody of virtue signallers just written to demean them.

Then I checked their website. . . .

SFWA has been a sad joke for decades. I blame Harlan Ellison, myself.

Blogger scipioafricanus June 04, 2020 10:12 PM

This is beautiful. A black mob burned down the bookstore in
Minneapolis that the Hugos are named after. Maybe they will cook and eat Scalzi at a SFWA conference before this is all done.

How is their Community unsafe?

Blogger Grime Knight June 04, 2020 10:15 PM

Hah, love it when you post Babylon Bee stuff...

"These are the actions that SFWA is taking as first steps to clean our own house and work towards making our community safer for Black writers."

Unless the afforementioned black SF writers are under 18, I truly doubt their safety is in question from any of the members of the SFWA.

Blogger Lazarus June 04, 2020 10:22 PM

Make those Negroes admit that SFWA has White Privilege! Say it! Say it!

Do you not like our Plantation?

Harlan Ellison was the first to shine a light on the problem. I can't find the video, but I remember it.

The scary (hilarious?) part here is the leftist narrative's participants have absorbed the lack of self awareness. They're not able to process their previous 60 years of complete institutional control. They think that one more tweak, one more small advance, one more concession will _finally_ right that wrong.

They don't see how far they've driven the bus off the road. Harder towards the ditch, step on it.

Forward!

Blogger rcocean June 04, 2020 10:38 PM

Yep. That's Scalzi's new career move. Finding a not-too-distant black ancestor. Liz Warren got to be Indian just because her mother told her she was. Maybe, JS's mother did something similar. Or perhaps coming out as a Bi-sexual - would win him more Affirmative Action credits. After all, no one can really prove he's not.

Blogger tublecane June 04, 2020 11:00 PM

Imagine trying to tap into a non-existent fount of black lesbian or transsexual science fiction authors.

Imagine anything less interesting to black lesbians or transsexuals than science.

Blogger flyingtiger June 04, 2020 11:07 PM

I never knew the SFWA was racist. It is time for them to reform.

I saw on the SFWA registration page that the 100% discount is applied by entering "George Floyd" in the discount code box. 50% if you enter code word "kiddy-diddler".

After reading this I recalled the Black Panther Sci Fi character from “Chasing Amy.” Very funny video.

"Black Science Fiction?" I think I've already read enough about how they Wuz Kangz and Faroze an' Sheeit, and how despite their super-advanced science and flying pyramids, they somehow got enslaved by "inferior" White cave dwellers.

Blogger Up from the pond June 05, 2020 12:04 AM

"Black science" and "fiction" are not unrelated words.

Dark days could soon approach in the Sci Fi world.

Blogger Nihil Dicit June 05, 2020 12:20 AM

Groveling before 13% of the population that doesn't even buy your chosen product. A brilliant ploy. Maybe they should offer an internship to any rappers who want to do a black* version of Man Or Astro-man? That'd really spread the word to the hood.

*I assume it will soon be a gulag-worthy offense to not capitalize "black" when referring to race.

Blogger Wanderor June 05, 2020 12:32 AM

I look forward to SFWA taking their first steps to clean their own house and work towards making their community safer for Red writers.

Blogger Silly but True June 05, 2020 1:43 AM

So will SFWA admit it is a safer space for fat Jewish serial pedophiles than it is for black writers?

Blogger God Emperor Memes June 05, 2020 2:09 AM

Wakanda thing is that to say?

Blogger Pseudotsuga June 05, 2020 2:17 AM

Safer? What, are they worried that Seanan McGuire is going to sit on them or something?
Why would a black writer have ANYTHING to fear from the bunch of leftists of SFWA?
I used to think, back in the late 80s, that being a member of SFWA meant something.
Now I know what it means...

>> A black mob burned down the bookstore in
Minneapolis that the Hugos are named after.

The Hugo Awards (starting in 1953) were named after an obscure bookshop (founded in 1974)? And were the Edgar Awards (1954) named after the "Uncle Edgar's" the mystery fiction bookshop next door(1974)?

Reality:

The Hugo Awards were named after Hugo Gernsback, founder of Amazing Stories (1926).
"Uncle Hugo's" was named after the award.

The Edgar Awards are named after Edgar Allen Poe.

Blogger StrongCoffee61 June 05, 2020 4:11 AM

Isn't CBT groovy?

I'm not referring to Leftwing sexual practices, but to Communist Blaxploitation Terrorism.

This CBT is doing to urban Whites and big corporations what the Symbionese Liberation Army did to Patty Hearst.

As it applies to SF, the emphasis on black writers means we get the literary equivalent of screeching and flinging poo.
Just judging by typical leftwing black political expression.

Here's a little sample;

Negro spaceman scientist:
Fu#$ that sh$% you motherfu#$% cracker.

Cucked White dork:
I apologize. I don't have your engineering genius, but I just wanted to help.

Negro spaceman scientist:
Fu#$ that sh$%!

There should be some great stuff from the SF black hole.

Blogger wreckage June 05, 2020 4:45 AM

Has it occurred to them that "science fiction" might be "Stuff White People Like" and of no interest whatsoever to anyone else?
They will never have cool black friends.
Not ever.

Blogger bramley says "Enoch was right" June 05, 2020 5:55 AM

As the only black contributions to science are purely fictitious maybe they have a point...

Blogger Mr.MantraMan June 05, 2020 7:21 AM

Imagine the competitive debasement potential within that crowd it literally has to be off the charts. If some Normiecon like Larry and his puppies put up a slight amount of conservative outrage the convention would probably be one step from Jonestown.

I don't think ayone thinks the blacks will buy them. The target market would be the white cucks, which considering SFWA authors probably covers most of their current readers anyways.

This is a great time to be a black grifter in America, just ask Candace Owens.

Blogger Zaklog the Great June 05, 2020 9:08 AM

Where are they going to find that many black s.f. writers?

Blogger flyingtiger June 05, 2020 9:24 AM

I remember the good old days of the SFWA. We would put on white sheets and take midnight rides to burn crosses on the lawns of innocent black families. Whenever I hear the term "Institutional Racism" I have always used the SFWA as an example of this.

Blogger tuberman June 05, 2020 9:39 AM

"Where are they going to find that many black s.f. writers?"

Where there's a con, there be many a dindu. If necessary some feminist editor can step in to 'give some help.' They don't need many any how. They keep recycling just one for Hugos.

Blogger Silly but True June 05, 2020 9:48 AM

@33...
We'll know something fishy might be up when Tor starts to quickly publish Black Shirts, The Black Man's War, and Dreams From My Android Father.

What's the "purpose" of scifi, anyway?
Personally, it's always been about entertainment. Watching real science launch rockets toward the moon, I was inspired to write my first "novel" [twelve chapters, of a page each, with drawings] in 1964 during 6th grade at Oley Elementary, Huntington, WV; with my classmates as characters. They loved it.
My first of few "A's" at Marshall University was in an experimental English class exploring "Science Fiction as Literature" c. 1972. Read EVERYTHING & extra! My paper covered "NADSAT as literary device" from Clockwork Orange.
From then till now my eyes have been opening as to where scifi was going. I finally gave up reading it, somewhere toward the end of "Stranger..." -- only to be enticed back by a friend's gift of "Number of the Beast." Intrigued, I tried to pick it up again.
Nope.
Dopey story lines, filled with perverse sex & violence, with "humanity" oftentimes on the receiving end -- and well worthy, for "our" lack of sensitivity & diversity & (((PUKE!)))...
Where were the heroes?

Blogger Crew June 05, 2020 12:06 PM

Both the Hugos and that shop are named after Hugo Gernsback, one of the three Fathers of Science Fiction. (Jules Verne and H.G. Wells complete the triad - I know. White males.)

Well, she DID verify what many suspected.

That both Zoe Quinn and Randi Harper were making shit up about being harassed....

*AND* revealed what only a few even considered:

That Zoe Quinn and Randi Harper are some of the most prolific online harrassers and bullies on the planet.

Science Fiction is about exploring the possible consequences of changing the social structure or developing technology in certain directions.

Using an "alien" or otherwise "not us" society helps get the argument past the gate-keeper of the conscious mind, what hypnotist Mark Cunningham calls critical factor. It's called the "critical factor" because it critiques and criticizes new information, and throws it out if it disagrees.
