The One-Upper

The new episode of Hypergamouse, NO ONE LIKES A ONE-UPPER, is now live on Webtoons. And Hypergamouse artist Lacey Fairchild is rapidly becoming one of Arkhaven's star illustrators, as she's in the process of graduating from just illustrating the strips to writing scripts as well.

As I mentioned on SocialGalactic, what sets her apart is her ability to convey facial expressions and body language in just a few simple lines. Here is a great example: the body language expressed by the female mouse in this panel from HM02 beautifully sets up the foundation for several future strips to come.

UPDATE: In not-entirely-unrelated news, MIDNIGHT’S WAR finished the Short Story submission period as the 26th most popular entry of the 5,071 total entries, and the 7th most popular in the Brain category. Prizes are awarded to the top ten entries in both categories, so it will be interesting to see how it fares in the judges’ eyes. The announcement of the winners will be July 31.

The neck stubble really brings it all together

I hope to see more of the Rat Kardashians. As is so oft asked these days: Is this actually satire?

Blogger Weak June 30, 2020 12:26 PM

Hypergamouse is tremendous. By far my favorite comic in existence.

Blogger Bernard Korzeniewicz June 30, 2020 12:50 PM

The jock eyes got the perfect view.

Blogger upchuckmcduck June 30, 2020 12:50 PM

Who writes the scripts currently?

Blogger Student in Blue June 30, 2020 12:55 PM

The body language is indeed on point. Kudos to Lacey, all of the women are leaning away from Omega/Gamma mouse, as they would do in real life.

Blogger Silent Draco June 30, 2020 1:11 PM

The girl mouse poses are absolutely perfect for being with Alpha (or the rarer Sigma). Just have to laugh at the "we'll kinda share but he's mine!" result from the flock. Lacey hit this one hard enough to go through the next field's goal, too. Great work.

Blogger The CronoLink June 30, 2020 1:16 PM

She's great illustrating those poses and expressions, it's been enjoyable so far; "remastering" the old comics caught me by surprise and now can't wait to see once we start seeing new content for Hypergamouse.

Blogger Doktor Jeep June 30, 2020 1:33 PM

Omega mouse is back :-)

Blogger Silly but True June 30, 2020 1:35 PM

Hypergamouse is a rare treasure that has all of the elements to blow up big; a bound copy would be right at home as a coffee table book: it is accurate, clever, biting, and funny.

Blogger Matt Robison June 30, 2020 1:35 PM

Cringe, because I remember times in my life where I did this exact thing. Hopefully my exoeriencec can help guide my son's away from this behavior.

The current Webtoon comics are remakes. You can find the old versions on Vox's old Alpha Game blog. AFAIK, he wrote those.

The new illustrator is great.

Blogger Nate73 June 30, 2020 1:48 PM

Does the blue mouse character have a name yet?

Blogger Crazy Dave June 30, 2020 2:19 PM

she's a slice of fried gold.

Blogger Warunicorn June 30, 2020 2:22 PM

I really needed this; rough day today.

Blogger sammibandit June 30, 2020 2:24 PM

That hand wave at the end panel kills me. Just perfect. This stuff is fleshed enough for animated shorts.

Blogger [Redacted] June 30, 2020 2:31 PM

I can't get enough of Chad Mouse. He gets the cheese, yet understands there is more to life than the race for more.

Blogger Brute_swayne June 30, 2020 3:14 PM

Empowered Mouse' hand on her temple on #6 or #7 might be the most emotive drawing I've ever seen.
Many compliments to the artist.

Brings a whole new meaning to the phrase: "Chasing tail." Sorry, I just couldn't resist. It's a good comic.

Would Arkhaven consider collecting it into a soft cover, print edition at some point? I'm thinking in the order of the collected Sunday comic strips they did for Calvin and Hobbes, and Garfield.

Blogger Mast Abeam June 30, 2020 7:24 PM

Hi Lacey,
I noticed the departure from the Vox originals several episodes ago. There's a good premise and several characters to bring forward here.

I'm glad you are a green light to go.

Blogger Mast Abeam June 30, 2020 7:52 PM

PS. In the spirit of hypergamy, you have done well to hitch your star to this wagon ( or something like this.)

Blogger VFM #7634 June 30, 2020 8:51 PM

I can now recognize Alpha Chad, Gamma Neckbeard, the career feminist, and the one blonde who's friends with Neckbeard for some reason.

Blogger Terrific June 30, 2020 9:15 PM

Hypergamy and the SSH, along with the tragic satire of Hypergamouse, are all reasons why we should probably not criminalize MSM (men having sex with men). I mean, Gammas and Omegas are downright hopeless! Their alpha delusions and secret king fantasies will forever keep them from accepting the ones and twos they maybe could bed and even wed. Leaving them the most frustrated and pathetic men on the planet. Please leave them the shred of satisfaction they might get from anonymous rest stop restroom encounters. Which they wouldn't know about were it not for South Park.

We did that about 40 years ago, and look at the results.

The same as what it did to Greece, and what it did to Rome. And for a look at where it's illegal, but given no more attention than a wink and a nod (other than Iran, the entire Islamic world) -- is a basket case, including Turkey.

Blogger Student in Blue June 30, 2020 10:23 PM

Ah yes, the "harmless gays" ploy. Then they start diddling children, as they oft themselves were when they were young.

Blogger Ransom Smith June 30, 2020 10:37 PM

Gamma weirdo wearing an Overwatch t-shirt about made me fall over laughing.
The only man I've ever known over 18 who played Overwatch turned out to be a perv who sexted underaged girls.

Blogger L.Fairchild June 30, 2020 11:19 PM

I just can't even. So many positive comments and kind words - it really makes my day and I've been having an absolute blast working on this comic. It's brought back artistic motivation I've been lacking.

Since episode 09, Vox has still been writing them. The old series only went up to #9 - so now we're in fresh water which is exciting. He's still the writer for the new comics you'll see over the next few weeks. I just did some script drafts for comics which will be further ahead. :)

The fat nerd from Hypergamouse reminds me of the Pink Guy song "Friendzone", where he accurately summarizes the friendzone by saying it doesn't exist and that these people are lonely because they're fat and gay. Before he sold and and became Joji, he was something of a wordsmith.

Blogger Scuzzaman July 01, 2020 6:39 AM

Worked with a guy about 30 years back, nicknamed “Topper” for this same reason. Didn’t matter what it was he’d done it bigger badder faster longer harder more expensive. And he couldn’t stop himself telling you about how he’d topped whatever anyone else had ever done, no matter what it was. Fucking idiot.

Blogger VD July 01, 2020 7:01 AM

That's the plan, once we have enough of them. It looks like one needs about 100 strips to reasonably publish a paperback.

Blogger tuberman July 01, 2020 8:20 AM

Hypergamouse has been a pleasant surprise for me. "Empowered" or episode 7 is my favorite so far. "He Never Calls" or number 9 may be even better, the last panel shines.

Hypergamouse goes back to the newspaper syndicated type four panel comic, a great old standard.

Blogger the other boomer July 01, 2020 11:28 AM

#11 I did too, and it was something i was able to stop once I realized how counterproductive it was. Much better to cultivate humility and appreciate what others have done. Maybe you can show your son this strip?

I never really was into comic books, but I'm impressed with this as well as the vampire thing. They really are a medium that can convey a worthwhile message.

Blogger Killua July 02, 2020 2:02 PM

Congratulations! Great work.
