Never take "free speech" seriously

Much less those artists who claim to champion it:
Trans writer Jennifer Finney Boylan distances herself from free speech letter - that she signed with 150 other authors and academics calling out cancel culture - after realising JK Rowling also endorsed it.
If you're capable of deriving the correct conclusions from this little vignette, you can save yourself the trouble of reading John Bagnell Bury's A History of the Freedom of Thought.

Ohhh FREE speech.....i thought you said fee speech....ya no I'm against it.

Blogger Daniel July 08, 2020 4:58 PM

Nice catch! Freedom of Thought is a terrible book, which is why a) no one reads it and b) no one understands its truth: that "Freedom of Speech" means "Freedom from Christ". If an advocate of the first dances too close to acknowledging the Creator (which is a key element of Rowling's antitransmanity argument), then Freedom of Speech is viewed by the perverse as a Trojan Horse with a bunch of wicked little Xtians inside.

Bury was an ace history editor and an atrocious polemicist.

I hate the implication that it can be taken away. People talk freely, that's it, we just don't want to have to worry about being punished for it..which is why I don't have social media

Blogger Daniel July 08, 2020 5:56 PM

The implication is that blasphemy can be made illegal again. The implication is that social pressures can be applied to obedience to norms, that people can be relatively peacefully separated, and that instead of being allowed to "freely speak" about the right goodspeak, you are instead protected from the satanic crime of badthink.

tldr - The freer our speech became, the less you were allowed to say.

The letter was disguised enough to be on record as not necessarily criticizing the left.

This dimbulb probably only read the first paragraph and quite understandably assumed this was yet another elite assault on that "danger to democracy" Donald Trump and his "far-right" minions, who actually commit most of the crimes in the world, no matter what your lyin' eyes and statistics might say.

It's also telling that the signature section of this "important" letter needed to be padded out with non-entities like "trans writer Jennifer Finney Boylan". I mean, it hasn't even won a Hugo!

Blogger Tetro July 08, 2020 6:31 PM

I think it's brave and stunning to sign letters, and then renege, which makes you doubly brave and doubly stunning.

That Harry Potter is raciss and Hitler, is obvi to anyone non-cis bipedal on this planet.

I cannot wait to see which pedo-sci-fi group Scalzi finally pledges fealty to. Whatever his choice, it will be brave. And stunning.

related to Free Speech issues, executives at EBay ( one of them a former cop ) terrorize a Massachusetts couple. the execs went so far as to fly from CA to MA and personally spy on the couple and they even attempted to break into their garage and install a GPS tracker on their car.

do you think other Silicon Valley execs are less freakish than this?

That went from zero to ridiculous pretty quickly, didn't it?

Dudn't Hitler also signed letters agreeing that 2+2=4?

"I thought the same thing as a person who WrongThinks!"
What a dilemma.

Blogger Doktor Jeep July 08, 2020 8:18 PM

The cure for this retarded and civilization killing notion of "free speech" is to simply operate on the mindset of "Don't say anything you are not willing to die to defend".

Blogger "William Berke" July 08, 2020 8:20 PM

Double positive rhetoric is foundational to the socialized individual.

Blogger Brett baker July 08, 2020 8:36 PM

Maybe there is something to this trans thing. Jennifer Finney Boylan acted exactly like "she" was born with a vagina.

“I wholly disagree with what you say and will contend to the death for my right to stop you from writing it, saying it or even thinking it.”

A lot more in the spirit of Voltaire than the original quote that he never said anyhow.

Blogger Kraemer July 08, 2020 8:56 PM

He did write in Mein Kampf that the environment must be protected so have fun with that

The Left has so many lies they have to keep propped up now, they're running out of energy to do it and things are collapsing faster and faster for them.

Blogger Avalanche July 08, 2020 10:31 PM

@13 Didn't Hitler also signed letters agreeing that 2+2=4?

It's almost like James Boylan can't decide if she's Arthur or Martha...

If you're capable of deriving the correct conclusions from this little vignette,...
The easy, obvious lesson is that the Lefty principle of free speech boils down to who/whom. It's a weapon to use against us, only.
... you can save yourself the trouble of reading John Bagnell Bury's A History of the Freedom of Thought.

Oh, well, it's already on order.
