The brokeness of wokeness

There will be no sequel to Birds of Prey:
Margot Robbie's Birds of Prey was a record breaking failure at the box office. According to online publisher Giant Freakin' Robot, the sequel to Birds of Prey has been canned.

'Warners [Brothers] no longer believes in the concept or in the creative team behind the movie,' the publication's source said.

Birds of Prey failed at the box office, recording the worst opening of any DC Comics superhero movie, bringing in just US$201.9 million worldwide. This was worse than the critically panned Green Lantern film, which still brought in  US$219.9 million in 2011.
The Legend Chuck Dixon wrote the original comic. They should have hired him to write the script.

$200 million opening is a failure. What a bizarre world they live in. So much grift and shady accounting that they cannot profitably produce a movie at those levels.

If Rebel's Run brings in a tenth of that, I would consider it an amazing success for an independent film by a first-time group.

Blogger Colonel Blimp July 07, 2020 8:29 AM

The timing didnt help. Covid shut down most theaters worldwide before it hit and a few weeks later in the US. Sure the movie probably sucks and these woke epics are stupid, but fair is fair.

As for Robbie, she is a great actress. That Tonya Harding movie was incredible and she is incredibly attractive. It's just a shame we can't do anything now with 150 considerations or race, sex, nonsense.

Covid shut down most theaters worldwide before it hit and a few weeks later in the US.

Yeah, they'll be able to blame it on that, so the full effect of going woke won't be clear until the Democrats who run the biggest cities give up on their election-induced lockdowns. So maybe next year. It must really frost Hollywood (((producers))) that their comrades whose campaigns they paid for are killing their industry. But it's for a goal they share, so they won't complain too loudly.

Blogger borsabil July 07, 2020 8:51 AM

These movies cost 150-200 million to film and at leas that again on marketing. American box office returns 50% of receipts to the studio, overseas it's more like a third. So just to break even studio superhero movies have to make 6-700 million. Assuming Birds of Prey was on the cheaper end 500 million. So going woke has cost Warner Brothers and AT&T in the region of 300 million to half a billion.

Blogger Ulik July 07, 2020 8:55 AM

Friend is a big comic book fan, less so the last few years as the SJW wave has ruined the quality. However, we did see it together in a small group.

For a comic book movie with an ensemble cast it was pretty good. Some of the SJW was shoehorned in, but some was handled well. The lesbian cop had the lipstick lover roll on her, ditto the kindly minority store owner with the heart of gold.

The Harley character did grow as a person and showed why she was a psychologist before unwisely falling in love and into the vat. Her prior bad actions had consequences.

There was even a feel good ending that still allowed a follow up movie.

There was SJW that didn't work. 95 pound girls taking out special forces and hardened street criminal men in hand to hand and other assorted girl power stuff, mostly. And some silly class issues.

But overall this was as enjoyable as Black Panther and had less annoying SJW. I think the industry overdid the SJW end of marketing, then the flu closings finished killing it.

Think "The Producers" starring Zero Mostel.

Blogger doctrev July 07, 2020 9:26 AM

Trying to pry away Harley from a Heath Ledger, Joaquin Phoenix, or even the voice of Mark Hamill would be completely insane. It's possible if he's played by Jared Leto, but then you have a weak man, and who cares about that?

The Harley Quinn animated show last year arguably wrote a solo Harley Quinn adventure as well as possible: yet quite a large chunk of the audience respected KITE MAN's romantic decisions more than Harley's at the end of it. They're really losing out by trying to sell the agenda this hard.

How bored were you to watch a movie about the one time straight men gave a wet slap about figure skating? And no matter how attractive she is, Robbie is almost certainly a woketard.

Suicide Squad was a mixed bag but did have its moments. Robie's Quinn was a scene stealer but that never meant she was up to carrying a movie. IMO Will Smith's Deadshot was the underrated backbone of it.

DC needs to focus on sticking to the comics more. Even the pimp joker (though it might have made money) has pushed away it's core audience. Once the core is gone the normies will jump ship once it's no longer trendy.
I love Nolan's the dark knight, but it spawned so many bad movies trying to be dark and replicate it's success. They didn't even nail Batman's character right in that movie but by sticking to the comics they made a good film.
If I were in charge of DC I would make a full budget "red sun superman". Next I would make "the dark knight returns" then I would make "all star superman" then I would make the justice league where lex Luther gets Batman's plans.

Forget big Hollywood directors, forget selling a new joker, forget dark versions of characters

Blogger Xmas July 07, 2020 12:34 PM

They pushed it as a female empowerment movie, even though the main character is self-destructively hung up on her abusive ex boyfriend, then claimed that the movie failed because of misogyny. Then the audience surveys revealed that the opening weekend audience was 54% male and they skewed older, meaning women avoided the movie while the comic book movie nerds still showed up.

Blogger Canadian Warlord July 07, 2020 12:38 PM

More and more, there are movies to watch that don't have anything to do with Hollywood. Hint: check the bargain bins, the red boxes, review shows like Red Letter Media for news.

Some of these low budget independent movies even have Hollywood actors, but they don't get signed in to distribution deals. "Blue Ruin" ended up on netflix, but it's not a netflix movie. "Land of the Blind" is fantastic, stars Ralph Fiennes and Donald Sutherland, and never got bought / handled by the system (maybe it hit too close to home). Buying it for $2 is not paying hollyweird. "Turbo Kid" is up for download on their website. No (((middlemen))) necessary.

Never before have movie fans had more options to view, never before has the studio control on what we see been so weak. These are good times, people don't want to watch comic book movies forever.

Attend film festivals, you never know, might see something not based on a comic book that sucked anyway.

@18 The original Birds of Prey was a Black Canary/Oracle(Batgirl) team-up. Various other renditions included Huntress, Catwoman in an animated version, and a television show with the daughter of Black Canary.

Requirements for entry were: Female, and the vaguest relation to birds or hunting, with 'crimefighting' considered enough for a relationship to hunting criminals.

Harley Quinn was never a part of it until the recent movie and Birds of Prey was just the closest name they had with some comics geek cred.

My daughter and I had a tradition of a father-daughter date night for all the Marvel movies. The only ones with a noticable female presence in the theaters all featured an Australian Asgardian as the title character.

At one, there was a group of 8-10 women in the row directly behind us. Before the movie started, I overheard a couple of them talking:

"I've never seen so many women at a comic book movie."

"Oh, come on. You know why we're all here."

Re Blackwashing Deadshot, that really didnt register with me because Suicide Squad was long after my time w comic books, which ended back in the 70s (Im 55). By junior high I was already hooked on ow classic science fiction and left comics behind. In a way thats been good because where various movies diverged from the comics, within reason, it didnt bother me and I could enjoy the movies more in their own right.
Only superhero movies I have some interest at this point in are Wonder Woman 1984 - hoping that exploding wall in trailer isnt heavy handed antiTrump - and the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League.
Marvel is dead to me at this point, given they killed, aged out, injured, or retired all the main white male Avengers.

Blogger Amethyst Dominica July 07, 2020 7:30 PM

It wasn't Covid that crushed this movie. Sonic the Hedgehog opened at the same time and absolutely killed at the box office. And this is a movie featuring a CG cartoon mascot interacting with live actors in a way that completely defies verisimilitude, but it works because there was genuine heart and emotion between the characters. It helped that the main villain was played by Jim Carrey, who is himself the closest thing to a living cartoon character.

It also helped that the makers of the film listened to their target audience, even going so far as to delay the movie to redesign the MC. They also didn't spend the entirety of the movie beating white male nerds over the head and insulting them, nor did they insert a female cartoon counterpart to the main character who was better than Sonic was in every way without even trying. Amazing what happens when you don't loathe the primary demographic who's coming to see your film.

It'd be like taking Randy Quaid's idiot "Cousin Eddie" character from the well-regarded Vacation and Christmas Vacation movies, and making him the lead in Christmas Vacation 2. A godawful trainwreck.

----

Also under the heading of films that might not have ever seen theatrical release: Blue Ruin was great, and I can't say enough about Bone Tomahawk. Yeah, there's 'that scene' you'll never forget, but a great film about men exhibiting the manly virtues of courage, honor, justice, etc.

Geir Balderson wrote:Not to worry. The same bunch, including Margo Robbie , are now hired to destroy what is left of the "Pirates of the Caribbean' Franchise. Good times for all!!

I can already tell you what the plot is.

Red the Pirate is going to start off at the Wench Auction from the old Pirates of the Caribbean ride. She's going to escape with the rest of the wenches. They are are going to steal a ship and be an all wench pirate crew. And at one point she's going to say, "we wants the rum!" Just animatronic on the ride.

In case that previous paragraph confused you here is a little backstory.

There was a much bigger outcry when the Redhead and Wench Auction were replaced with Red the Pirate on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride. That petition got 40,000 signatures and Disney didn’t even notice… No… Wait… They did notice. They started selling “We wants the Redhead” tee-shirts in the Pirates giftshop. They replaced an unwoke robot with a woke robot but immediately started pushing merch featuring the banished Redhead...

It's the stupidity that's mind blowing. Pirates of the Caribbean was the only boy-friendly franchise that Disney still had. And they knew it. They were gearing everything around "Pirates and Princesses" for years. It was also one of their few properties that actually moved tickets in China.

It won't sell to either market because both are fundamentally sexist.

And all of this is coming just after Margot Robbie's last feminist bomb.

Blogger flyingtiger July 07, 2020 9:52 PM

They needed Guy Gardner in the movie.

Blogger jarheadljh July 07, 2020 9:59 PM

This is kind of frustrating.

I have a 45 minute rant on every wrong with Superman Returns, how it goes fatally wrong in the first ten minutes, and how to fix it so that Lex is an actual supervillain, Clark never left on purpose, and it even recotons dumb stuff from Superman 2.

I liked more than I disliked about Man of Steel. I especially liked Snyder's spin on Krypton. However, by the middle of Batman Versus Superman I knew the WB DC movies were hopelessly doomed. First of all, it's ridiculously obvious that Batman was shoehorned into a film that started out as "Lois&Clark Meet DOOMSDAY"(which might have been a good movie 6-10 movies down the line). And the execs were so thrilled that they told Snyder to shoehorn the rest of his universe's JL. The film failed simply by having Batman in it, and then it compounds the error because you can't care about Clark dying until you care about Clark.

Suicide Squad is not SS. The whole point of the team is covert actions done alone with complete deniability, not going into a hot zone besides three SEAL platoons.

Wonder Woman was okay. Nothing great.

Haven't seen Aquaman. Not going to.

Haven't seen Justice League. Didn't need to in order to be able to tell you exactly how it would suck done by Whedon. The Snyder Cut is going to suck just as badly, just in different ways.

Birds of Prey is not BoP. There's no Barbara Gordon still fighting the good fight after being confined to a wheelchair by Joker. Black Canary is not a blond vigilante trying to rebuild her life after losing her powers and suffering a miscarriage because of a mission gone wrong. Hell, even Gail Simone's contributions to the cast like Zinda Blake are completely absent. Oh, but there's a chick with a crossbow, so that's totally Huntress, except NOT.

It's Harley Quinn the movie, and the only person I know that liked it is a 50-something women using it to indulge in divorce fantasies. And like the others, I won't be seeing it ever.

Bottom line, DC peaked with the Timmverse and Justice League Unlimited. Young Justice could have taken the title, but then out of the blue we get gay Aqualad in series 3, even though he spent the first two years pining away for a redheaded chick. And just don't get me started on the Nu-52 and everything that came after.

Blogger map July 07, 2020 10:26 PM

I don't understand how Time Warner can produce such live-action flops, but their animated Batman/Superman movies are mostly superb.

I think a giant factor in this is home theater. It's a cheap thing to do with unused space, a co-worker decades ago made a plywood stand for couch stadium seating. A false wall, speaker stands fabbed at work, some paint. Old projector, homemade screen, about $200 all in with some elbow grease.

Screen your own movies, screw the theatre.

Corona business idea: Drive-In Movie Screening. Is this cheaper to do now with modern digital?

The other obvious attack is to fill the empty void market with original ideas. Produce content. Now's absolutely the premium time to do so, with so much crap out there that consumers are obviously tired of. Apparently people don't like being preached to. Who knew???

I'm an engineer. As the nature of engineering tends to involve life vs. death decisions (when a scientist screws up by publishing an erroneous paper, he *might* be embarrassed, and have to retract a paper, and worst case, won't be able to to to as many parties -- "conferences" -- as before, whereas when an engineer screws up, the results are measured in monetary losses and/or injuries, illness, and death). As such, we prefer to err on the side of safety (for example, most engineering standards require at that rated loads be no more than 50% of the most most accurate calculation for theoretical capacity), there is ALSO another fundamental principle to not bring about economic ruin by going overboard and significantly overrating hazards based upon the available evidence.

When this started out, we did not know that the governors of Michigan, New York, and other states had ORDERED nursing homes (which don't have bio-hazard rated HVAC systems) packed with elderly people to accept patients with suffering from this airborne virus, thus unnaturally spiking death statistics and making things appear as if it were killing the able-bodied in alarming numbers (as we were all going off the rather safe assumption that people who were NOT even getting out of bed were not being exposed to the diseases of able-bodied international travellers).

With the evidence AVAILABLE AT THE TIME, I stand by the level of concern I expressed, and if presented in the future with a similar data set, would express a similar level of caution UNTIL WE HAVE BETTER DATA.

>> Corona business idea: Drive-In Movie Screening. Is this cheaper to do now with modern digital?

Business at drive-in theaters in Michigan is booming. When I was a kid in the 70's, there were about 2 to 3 dozen such venues in South East Michigan placing ads in the classified section of Detroit's newspapers The Free Press, and the Detroit News, with Flint being roughly the extreme northern boundary and Ann Arbor the western boundary. Today, I believe there to be 4 or less, and Google Maps indicates 3 within that area, and 9 remaining in the state (all in the lower peninsula)

https://www.google.com/maps/search/drive-in+theater+in+Michigan/@42.825833,-84.4757805,8z

I suspect that digital is now cheaper even for Drive-ins, as most explicitly say they have converted to digital (There may be others which have converted and don't mention it).

I enjoyed the Cartoon Network Justice League quite a lot back when my son was young. I appreciated that there was time for some characterization among the core heroes. By contrast, with JLU I felt that fell by the wayside just so they could make the fanboys happy by shoehorning in as many lesser known heroes as possible.

remember when you were sperging out, trying to convince everyone that Corona-chan was a real epidemic?

Explain the following in China:
* Shutting off all transportation out of Wubei province to the rest of the country
* People trapped in their apartment buildings because authorities welded the doors shut
* Hospitals filled to overflowing of both the sick and the dead, causing the construction of multi-thousand bed hospitals using military tents.
* Chinese authorities moving as many crematoria and trash incinerators into Hubei province
* Huge clouds of smoke, with the atmospheric Sulphur Dioxide detected by satellites at concentrations 4x higher than that of the most heavily industrialized city in the world, Beijing, which is primarily powered by coal-fed electricity plants.
* China buying up as many face masks as possible, including sending Chinese expats to the stores to buy up stock in hardware stores and shipping the purchases home to China.
* Even to this day, Chinese government officials getting upset by people calling the disease "The Wuhan Flu" or any other nickname which indicates a connection to or origination in China.
* Observers in China (such as Laowhy86) noticing the disappearance of Chinese virologists working at the Wuhan virology lab and contemporaneously, a series of discreetly-placed-but-increasingly-desperate advertisements in China for virologists. Was a man who has come to *hate* the Chinese government a willing participant in a hoax?
* A Chinese wireless telephone service provider (i.e. an equivalent of Verizon) putting in one of their financial reports that they had cut off 8 MILLION telephone numbers.

All of this, and NOBODY has claimed that the Chinese government was using a fake epidemic as cover to carry out mass arrests, let alone provide evidence of such. The few videos of anybody being arrested in China at this time (filmed by observers looking out their apartment windows) show cops being extremely wary of getting into a scuffle with unarmed targets, resulting in videos that are reminiscent of the "Keystone Kops" comedy shorts from the silent movie era.

The CCP's power over the Chinese population depends upon the impression among the population that the state, via the police, wields irresistable power over them.

Why would the Chinese state create at false propaganda (as opposed to true propaganda) which creates doubt in the minds of the people that the police have any weakness? Just like here in the U.S., the police are far outnumbered by the rest of the population, and could be swept away in far less than a week if the population rose up against the CCP. Remember also, that just like in the Soviet Union, even generals in the Chinese army are kept in line by the Chinese police.

Or have you forgotten ALL of that?

There is evidence that the virus is much more active among Asians (as one of the things it targets is the "ACE2" receptor site in cells, which apparently Asians tend to have 2.5x as many per cell than Europeans) -- but this was unknown at the time.

We still don't have good numbers. WE have any number of people who are supposed to be impartial observers skewing the numbers, for financial gain, for personal power, vindictive spite, even just to avoid the emarrassment of having been wrong in the past.
There is still no useful definition of a "case" despite that being the metric upon which economic and legal decisions are being made.

Yeah, in my rural county, we've suddenly had about 80 new cases, after almost zero for two months. So some people are panicking, but "new case" now doesn't mean what it meant in April. Then they were only testing people with the whole list of symptoms, so a "new case" was someone currently infected and suffering from it. Now they're testing all sorts of people, so they're finding a bunch who probably had it and recovered months ago. We won't know whether this is some sort of "second wave" until we see whether anyone dies in a couple weeks, but so few have been hospitalized out of the 80 that it doesn't seem likely.

We have the CDC telling us to wear masks while trying to memory-hole the fact that they told us not to wear masks in March, and had good reasons to back that up. It's *all* become political at this point, as they try to A) get attention off BLM, and B) depress people and the economy in hopes of affecting the election. I still think it could be a serious long-term problem that's damaging in ways they aren't talking about, but not in the immediate "OMG we'll all die if we don't wear masks" sense.

I don't think Birds of Prey failed because of it's strongly feminist, anti-male view. It has more to do with the bad timing of the release coupled with bad marketing.

There seems to be a big audience for ass-kicking, feminist, female-empowerment super-hero movies. See the huge success of "Wonder Woman" and "Captain Marvel," for example.

There is also an animated "Harley Quinn" tv show that is also very strongly feminist although it isn't as strongly virulently anti-male as the movie is, and which is very successful. The show frequently lampoons all the male superheroes in the DC canon, making the case the male superheroes are buffoons who are hung up on their male egos while the female protagonists like Harley Quinn and her staunchly feminist close friend, Poison Ivy, are smarter and fiercer than any male super-hero or villain.

Can anyone explain how companies that have fiduciary responsibility can make these terrible financial decisions and not be canned by their investors? Obviously companies seem to care more about agenda than profit, but how can they maintain that stance in the face of stockholder interest and company bankruptcy?

Johnny... majority of shares held by "institutional investors" (retirement funds, mutual funds, etc.) and the people in charge of those institutions are all full of "woke" idiocy that they got from their MBA courses.
