NFL ratings plummet

The early results are in and they do not bode well for the NFL:

Despite two teams with big national followings, SNF snared a 4.7 in early ratings among adults 18-49 and 14.81 million viewers last night. In numbers certain to change, that’s a fall of 28% in the demo and a hard decline of 23% in sets of eyeballs from the early numbers of the the September 8, 2019 SNF season debut.

More precisely, the decline was from a 7.5 rating among 18-49 and 22.21 million viewers... of a game that New England beat Pittsburgh 33-3. That's a loss of up to 7.4 million viewers.

I came back in from the deck to grab some drinks and noticed football was coming on. I switched to Hallmark Channel and let it run all afternoon and evening while we enjoyed one of the few nice weekends left this year.

Because screw the NFL.

Blogger Shrugger September 14, 2020 2:29 PM

One of those 7.4 million fewer viewers was me. Nuke the NFL.

Blogger Ron Winkleheimer September 14, 2020 2:38 PM

I turned the tv on yesterday and it happened to be tuned to the Fox entertainment cable channel. A football game was ready to start, but first they had to propagandize the audience. I caught about 30 - 60 seconds of an attempt to make Kapernick into a civil rights hero before I turned it off.

Blogger Bogey September 14, 2020 2:39 PM

"Nuke the NFL."

It's the only way to be sure.

Regardless of water cooler story lines stay strong fellas.

Where's @Timmy3 to tell us it doesn't matter, they won't lose that many viewers and they can continue indefinitely without an audience?

Blogger Damelon Brinn September 14, 2020 3:09 PM

There was a game on (no sound) in the bar I was in last night. Other than the bartender and one or two others, everyone seemed to be pointedly not looking in that direction.

Blogger KPKinSunnyPhiladelphia September 14, 2020 3:12 PM

My working theory:

Roger Dodger and the Owners realize that all this BLM stuff is for the birds, but they've got a bunch of black stars and tons of black marginal players who buy into the horseshit, so they believe they have to placate them to keep them playing.

A walkout would be MORE devastating that a few negro national anthems and names of low life criminals on the helmets.

Then, by the time 2022 rolls around, and the new TV contract has to be negotiated, all this will have blown over, with the line on the ratings graph moving in the Northeast direction from the low points of 2020.

And the networks, bruised and battered by the cord cutters and the streamers, will be desperate to hold onto this "sure thing" content.

That's the gamble, that's the bet.

Will it pay off? I guess we'll see.

It's certain to be more entertaining than the Jags vs the Dolphins.

If the No Fans League is really vital to maintain the narrative, we may see them go on surprisingly long without an audience. You didn't think that the Dem and GOP politicians get to keep all of those billions of foreign aid money that get kicked back to them, surely?

As a kiwi I've been boycotting the NFL my whole life. I was a boycotter before it was cool. It's all about me, don't you know?

Unfortunately rugby is going the same way. Fags and freaks being promoted as role models.

Blogger Jack Amok September 14, 2020 3:26 PM

That's a bigger drop than I was expecting. Good news abounds!

I'm sure there are people in boardrooms right now saying "just ride it out - it'll get better after the election." But at this point, it's probably too late to do anything. Even if they ditched the BLM nonsense and took the hit from their spoiled players (and low-trust partners like ESPN, who I'm sure would be quite happy to have someone else take the heat for restoring ratings), would anyone notice or care?

Outkick said the Thursday night game, the BLM messages were hardly noticeable. Indeed, I didn't notice any at all because I didn't watch the game. Won't watch one. 7.4 million people didn't notice any BLM anti-American messages Sunday night either.

Blogger Nikolai Collushnikov September 14, 2020 3:28 PM

I watched a little of the Browns game. It was with Ravens after all. But the propaganda was annoying along with the empty stadium. Stopped half way through the first.

Only caught the last couple of series of the Eagles-Redskins game (I refuse to call them the Football Team because of Snyder's cucking). Was mildly amused to see the Eagles finish their implosion.

Then I saw the pic of the Skins kneeling at pregame. Those series were a complete waste of time.

@Cataline Sergius

Because JK Rowling chose truth. When she was asked to call a man a woman, she balked and chose to stand by her best understanding of the truth despite what it would and has cost her. And when the NFL execs faced similar questions, they asked what is truth, washed their hands of the matter, and took a ticket. Perhaps they should have checked the fine print.

Curious to see if we have a bunch of angry local fans, since they're the ones being fleeced to pay for the temples of nonsense whether or not they were ever fans of the game. I mean, it was a sure thing that these places would be overall revenue winners! So yeah you're paying for it, but there will be endless dividends for the local area down the line!

A walkout would be MORE devastating that a few negro national anthems and names of low life criminals on the helmets.

A walk out would have been easy to deal with. In fact, a walk out wasn't likely to even happen. A few "stars" might have made some rumblings that they were going to walk out but half of them wouldn't have in the end. I doubt the union would have voted for an actual lockout, especially if it meant no pay. Most of those guys aren't stashing enough money for it not to hurt bad to go without pay (or reduced union supplemental pay) for a season. Especially the ones most fanatical about BLM.

The NFL wanted this. They could have put half the planning they did into virtue signalling on opening weekend into strategies to deal with a walk out or discourage a walk out and came out way ahead.

Can't wait to hear how bad the ratings were for tonight's two MNF games.

An anecdote: I live in "Broncos Country". Was at the supermarket yesterday and I only saw one dimwit wearing a Broncos jersey. Normally you would see dozens of shoppers wearing them.

It's too bad there won't be any fans at Mile High tonight. I would love to see a clip of them booing the donkeys.

In Michigan, the county sold all of their remaining good lands in the western part of the county to give to the billionaire Ford family to make their stadium.

The city black leaders all demanded an additional 600 million dollars from the state to educate poor black children better. They then gave it to the billionaire hockey and football families to build Little Caesars Pizza Arena.

When the state legislature got mad and wouldn't give them an extra 600 million, the democratic governor sued herself for failing to provide extra funding for black education then settled the suit with herself by gifting the city schools more money.

Bought a new place to live. Spent the weekend pulling weeds in the yard, patching some small holes in the drywall and working in the garage. Heck of a feeling of accolplishment and pride that comes from hard work and quality results.

Going to be real hard for the NFL to top that. Even if they and their advertisers quit telling me what a rotten SOB I am, and how I'm the worstiest of the worst if I disagree with their point of view.

They also point out ads time that continue to be bought for exorbitant prices as proof that the NFL isn't collapsing.

Blogger AzDesertRat September 14, 2020 5:31 PM

Anecdotal evidence from Phoenix: I was out running errands all yesterday and could count on two hands with fingers leftover the number of people wearing NFL gear of any type. Most of them were older (55+) black women. The local grocery store is one of those places where in years past most every employee would be wearing some jersey or t-shirt of their preferred team. This past Sunday, not a single one was wearing anything NFL related.

When I happened to glance at the TV a couple times, I saw coaches wearing masks. It's freaking hilarious that they're still trying to sell the idea that the virus is so dangerous that people standing still on the sidelines need a mask, while men tackling each other on the field are (I assume) not wearing them.

Imagine the angst if a player caught Covid and died, or even was seriously ill. I suppose they know as well as we do that won't happen, so it's theater.

Blogger Major Styles September 14, 2020 7:56 PM

In the typical strip mall with a few businesses (i.e. Applebees, Chilis, etc.) one could deduce that 100 individuals were each watching the games. In reality, it was just 20 televisions on in 5 different locations - and only a small handful or people watching.

Thus, you have the CNN airport effect: i.e. the numbers of televisions boradcasting the station being different than the number of people actually watching it. I am sure that this is the case with the week one NFL ratings.

Except for Trump. His life has been in the tabloid press for decades. He is a real threat to the elite, as he is not controllable by the usual means.

Blogger cyrus83 September 14, 2020 9:10 PM

The drop in ratings will actually be somewhat worse than it appears because the NFL had hundreds of thousands of fans who were at home rather than in stadia. Fans in the stands don't count in ratings and had the league not done its best to piss off its fan base, ratings should have gone slightly up with more fans at home even if interest and overall fan feeling had remained the same as in 2019.

Blogger Chip Hazard September 14, 2020 10:19 PM

I suppose if you're feeling the withdrawal you could always look up old games or highlights from old games with real players like Joe Namath, Larry Csonka, Dick Butkis, et al.

I used to sit on a folding chair with my father and a dozen old guys and watch those old games at the Knights of Columbus hall. They played them on a projector from reels. I was ten years old. They kept the reels in tins and broke them out on the Fourth of July. He drank a Pabst and got me a Coke. A real Coke, out of a bottle, straight from the '50's icebox they had; it kept the stuff so cold it made your teeth ache.

That was my America. It wasn't even that long ago. It makes me sad and at the same time I shake with rage.

Blogger Timmy3 September 14, 2020 10:38 PM

I’m right here. They’re playing to empty stadiums. So? The 28% dropoff was more than double the 12% drop from the opening game so they’re definitely in trouble. This can continue this for a long time. I’m not an owner so you need to ask them.

The presence of live audiences is important because it's a powerful social proof mechanism that demonstrates the importance of the event and its players.

No, people aren't tuning in specifically for the audience, but a packed stadium is a huge differentiator between the pros and a bunch of guys playing catch in the local park.

Blogger tuberman September 15, 2020 11:27 AM

I sometimes wonder if some pro sports may come back? I assume that the NFL and the NBA are done as far as the fan base goes. Who cares if the DS players hold the leagues heads above water for a while. Soon border line players will be let go more often, new players will be offered less, and with less commitment, and stars will even have to take cuts to keep going. The Deep State funds to to make up for the losses will be less than projected, thus tons of money problems.

Remember: These people are indeed stupid, and all their fantasies about their alternatives (to fan base?) will come home to roost. Some of these idiots believe they can make Wakanda real, and they can play for adoring African crowds! Or play for their huge fan base in China (underwater football, no doubt). These players have these absurd fantasies, and they really believe that no matter their erosion of their current fan base, it will be onward and upwards for them and their elite lives (which they feel they so much deserve).

Yet, my original question was can leagues like the NLB or the NHL survive? How much are the players in these leagues actually invested in this insanity? Almost no breakaways because jobs? Money? Go along to get along? Or equally stupid on equality? All are converged at the top, but will anyone revolt?

People with adequate money, and backing could potentially revolt among players and fans, then after reading "Corporate Cancer," start slowly reforming new leagues? The 'thugs are us' black dominated leagues have to go away, and perhaps forever. How can anyone expect to keep SJW infiltration out of such? Short answer...not possible.

Watching great athletic skills on display in fun, and will be missed. Getting down the clash of the coaching skills is even more fun,and it's sad that that will be gone too.

It is amusing to watch their absurdly arrogant self-destruction though.

However, new, foreign coaches have started introducing things such as talking about gender equality and critical race theory. I'm concerned, but is there really anything I, as a player, can do about it? Is there even a point to it?

I dunno Alexander. I was a fair player in my teens and my partner and I won our age group mixed doubles comp two years in a row. But we kept dropping points on my serve because of that hand-eye coordination thing and I kept looking at the wrong thing, so she dropped me for another partner.

Blogger Alexander September 15, 2020 2:30 PM

Scuzzaman, it's preposterous that mixed doubles are even a thing. Badminton is the Intellectual's sport, and the fact that such Promethean propaganda has made its entry should serve as a warning for how far society's downfall has gone. Need I remind you, I'm in Switzerland, which has enjoyed some sort of isolation from it all. I'm guessing we all have to scrimmage with the communists face-to-face at some point.
