One media, one voice, one opinion

Glen Greenwald resigns from the media organization he founded because it was captured and converged by infiltrators:

Today I sent my intention to resign from The Intercept, the news outlet I co-founded in 2013 with Jeremy Scahill and Laura Poitras, as well as from its parent company First Look Media.

The final, precipitating cause is that The Intercept’s editors, in violation of my contractual right of editorial freedom, censored an article I wrote this week, refusing to publish it unless I remove all sections critical of Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, the candidate vehemently supported by all New-York-based Intercept editors involved in this effort at suppression.

The censored article, based on recently revealed emails and witness testimony, raised critical questions about Biden’s conduct. Not content to simply prevent publication of this article at the media outlet I co-founded, these Intercept editors also demanded that I refrain from exercising a separate contractual right to publish this article with any other publication.

I had no objection to their disagreement with my views of what this Biden evidence shows: as a last-ditch attempt to avoid being censored, I encouraged them to air their disagreements with me by writing their own articles that critique my perspectives and letting readers decide who is right, the way any confident and healthy media outlet would. But modern media outlets do not air dissent; they quash it. So censorship of my article, rather than engagement with it, was the path these Biden-supporting editors chose....

Making all of this worse, The Intercept — while gradually excluding the co-founders from any role in its editorial mission or direction, and making one choice after the next to which I vocally objected as a betrayal of our core mission — continued publicly to trade on my name in order to raise funds for journalism it knew I did not support. It purposely allowed the perception to fester that I was the person responsible for its journalistic mistakes in order to ensure that blame for those mistakes was heaped on me rather than the editors who were consolidating control and were responsible for them.... It is astonishing to me, but also a reflection of our current discourse and illiberal media environment, that I have been silenced about Joe Biden by my own media outlet.

I have no doubt it was astonishing to him, but it shouldn't have been. Convergence destroys everything it touches, no matter the industry, no matter the perspective. Not even being an honest man of the Left can save one from the corporate cancer.

All assets activated.

Is it really "captured and converged" when his main funder was lefty Pierre Omidyar, whose current "network" page leads with "We invest to build more inclusive and equitable societies."

I mean, he basically was funded by a Soros clone. It started out converged. He was just the chump with street cred they used as the public face.

Blogger Trid October 29, 2020 6:53 PM

If he's a co-founder doesn't he outrank the editors?
Or is this like billionaires who don't actually have billions of dollars?

Blogger cecilhenry October 29, 2020 7:04 PM

Sadly, it very true: any organization not specifically opposed to leftist drift will invariably become converged.

Here is another rather timely similarity:

Dirty Kanza renamed 'UNBOUND Gravel' after complaints term insulted native Americans

And there were no real complaints from anyone. What disrespect to the founder of the race.

There's a history too:

The founder was fired when he voiced non-PC opinions online...

"Dirty Kanza founder fired for saying police shooting of Rayshard Brooks was 'justified' "

The Intercept — while gradually excluding the co-founders from any role in its editorial mission or direction, and making one choice after the next to which I vocally objected as a betrayal of our core mission

So all this just happened, through no fault of his own, and there was never anything he could do because everyone was against him? We've heard this song before.

Blogger Valtandor Nought October 29, 2020 7:10 PM

It looks like he was naive enough to think that his status as founder would give him residual authority over the organisation, even after he chose to hand over governance and management to others, who then became his bosses.

I admit to not having read Corporate Cancer, but it strikes me that in addition to HR departments, one very important vector for infiltration and subversion is the recruitment of "professional directors" and other senior personnel. You can never be sure that your business will survive your departure, but one way to virtually guarantee that it will not do so, is to hand it over to members of the Big Club to run as they see fit.

What a petard upon which to hoist oneself! The fact that he didn't notice Biden was bad for the country untIL his son was naked smoking meth and raping his relatives to trade US assets to China in exchange for some cash tells you how useful an "honest man of the Left" is to anyone's discourse. This infidel should be praising Allah that his own insurgents didn't behead him.

Amazing that these people still hold to that "I invite you to debate me in the forum of free ideas" is a winning move.

So who hired these people? And as founder, why couldnt he show them the door?

I used to read Greenwald on antiwar.com and I have his book on Snowden somewhere. He always struck me as honest and well-intentioned. Even if I find it a little odd that he lives in Brazil “married” to a man under the Bolsonaro regime which he despises. But rootless people can be honorable people, too.

Really? Has he watched Casablanca too much lately - “i’m shockec, shocked that there is gambling going on in this establishment” as he sticks he hand out to take his winnings.

Seriously, what kind of idiot takes the ticket and then thinks he will not have to pay the price for it? Should have kept the site under his own control like this site or Gab rather than selling out...

Blogger Pathfinderlight October 29, 2020 7:46 PM

He ran straight into one of the founding principles of bad management: place blame for failures elsewhere whenever possible.

Every organization with a toxic management culture has this as one of its core operating principles. You can see it in most companies. You saw it in public with Schumer negotiating with Trump face to face. Everyone who's a real producer, and not a slimer who takes credit for the work of others, knows Trump won the exchange when he accepted blame to move the negotiation forward.

It really seems like most leaders of yesteryear had no clue about liars.

I wish that people in this situation would actually name the people at fault. Even just a statement along the lines of 'the editorial and management staff at the intercept are: X (role), Y(role), Z (role).' The only person he seems to name is Betsy Reed.

This happened at Barstool sports. Not to the extreme Glen has experienced, but many of the writers were upset with Portnoy over his respectful interview with president Trump.

For a while you may have been able to ignore the signs and chalk it up to a few bad apples that just want to cause trouble, but there are absolutely no excuses left after the events of this year. If you can't be bothered to pay attention to the current social and cultural dynamics, then you deserve to fall by the wayside.

Just so you younger guys don't get discouraged. This is the way it has been for several decades. The media has always supported the Democrat Party as far back as I can remember and I was around during the days of the three networks ABC, NBC, and CBS where three similarly dressed anchormen presented the exact same news stories in the exact same sequence coming to exact same conclusions.

Today it's WAY better than it has ever been. The lies, the deceit, the manipulation are all obvious now. And people know. It's a great time to be alive. Back in the day, we were clueless.

Blogger Lance E October 29, 2020 10:31 PM

I've seen convergence in action, but I still don't understand how a founder who is against it can allow things to get so far out of control. Usually it requires a sympathetic authority. If it's so bad that you're willing to resign, why not just fire everyone else?

I suppose in this case he must have never really had any power, his cofounders are/were the real owners.

Blogger Valar Addemmis October 29, 2020 11:34 PM

Odd how many people don't realize that The Intercept was converged from its founding. Its very launch was a textbook example of taking the ticket.

If your seed money comes from a far-left billionaire, this is the only possible end. The Intercept started out as converged as the Lincoln Project; they just let Greenwald do his own thing as long as it didn't actually affect their strategic objectives.

Remember all those movies depicting "young upstarts" as always being cool and hip and right while the old guard were a bunch of bigoted easy to hate stuffed shirts? It always ended with the protagonist shaking up the organization.

Collectives always do that. Tall poppy syndrome emerges and it pisses off its best people. Churches, governments, spy orgs, flower clubs, etc. all orgz do the exact same thing over time.

Blogger Hieroglyph October 30, 2020 5:09 AM

I'm never quite sure what to make of Greenwald. I recall when he was writing for The Guardian, he ended one of his pieces with a call for alms. He basically asked his readers to support him financially, as though he was still a blogger. Asking for contributions when writing a blog, or on a YouTube channel, is fair enough, and actually a good finance model. But a best-selling author writing for The Guardian? It was curiously (((tone-deaf))).

This is not to dismiss all his work. Greenwald is, to me, a slightly mysterious character. I used to read his articles back in his blogging days, long time ago, and he appears to at least have some cojones. I'm sure his body of work overall is interesting, and very far removed from the NPC dolts we are usually subjected to. At the same time, he wrote for The Intercept, whose owner would set alarm bells ringing from at least a mile away. He's far from stupid, so what did he expect? Perhaps Joe Pedo is his red-line. If so, I fear many US Patriots will agree, all too soon.

Blogger Scuzzaman October 30, 2020 5:15 AM

I'm guessing based on how he's talking around things and never even hints at lawsuit that his contract said he either had complete editorial freedom or he was allowed to publish censored work he did for the site at another venue. And when he said "fine, that's what I'm doing", they said they'd force him out if he published that piece somewhere else.

Lance E wrote:I've seen convergence in action, but I still don't understand how a founder who is against it can allow things to get so far out of control.

Because he was a dupe from the beginning. *Co*-founder, and he was the one without the money. He was just the dummy white guy that Chinese companies use as a front to look upstanding and impressive. Although in this case it was a frontman for the French-born Iranian-American money man whose nonprofit network goals look basically interchangable with Soros's OSF.

Blogger Canada78Bear October 30, 2020 7:52 PM

While he is one of the few honest reporters he is still a bit of an idiot to give up editorial control of his own content when his name is firmly attached.
I'd love to know how they got it done, possibly get other founders to surrender and use guilt/shame for him go give them control.
