DC dead in 6 months

That's the word from ex-DC illustrator Ethan van Sciver, anyhow:

It's claimed that DC Comics will close down as we know it by June 2021, according to information provided to Ethan Van Sciver, a twenty-seven year veteran of the comic book industry who also recently said Jim Lee will be leaving the company.

Van Sciver, known for working on DC's Green Lantern with Geoff Johns (who recently announced he is publishing a creator-owned comic book at Image Comics and not with DC) claims an insider filled him in AT&T has plans to close down DC Comics publishing by June.

Van Sciver says that while the publishing of comic books will end, the popular characters such as Batman, Superman, etc. will live on in the form of movies, TV shows, and video games, which make money for AT&T while the comics do not.

"Comic books themselves have fallen into the hands of extremely irresponsible people in editorial and in publishing who have taken comics and turned them from a good, fun pastime, escapist fantasy into identity, political, evil, poisonous pamphlets that insult their own readers," says Van Sciver on his ComicsArtistPro Secrets YouTube channel. "AT&T fired a BIG portion of their editorial staff in April and just this week they fired the rest of them, essentially. We understand from sources at this point that there are no editors at DC Comics anymore. There are the people who just used to get coffee, interns, people who aren't making very much, people who are going to be running the company until it ends."

Van Sciver continues, "I received a tip, by the way, an unverifiable tip, I gotta say, I don't know if it's true or not, but they are saying DC Comics will close down publishing paper comics in June of 2021. I think they just solicited March's comics, and I guess that, if this is true, that's going to be it."

June 2021 is almost perfect timing in light of Arkhaven's plans to launch a major new comics platform next spring. 2021 promises to be a very interesting year on the comics front.

Yup, I just read that CW is going to have a Latina "Wonder Girl" show, where the protagonist is an illegal alien "Dreamer".

I used to watch the 2003 Teen Titans show with my kids. There have been campaigns to "bring it back", but I can only imagine what the new writers would do to it: Raven would be a lesbian, Beast Boy would be able to change gender, Starfire would be a slut (OK, she was one at times in the comics), Cyborg would be pansexual and who knows what they would do to Robin.

It was amusing to watch the DCUniverse streaming service crash and burn, given its own level of depravity. Their Doom Patrol series was stomach churning. Titans became dull and boring and Young Justice became hopelessly woke. I didn't even try to watch their other shows and cancelled my subscription. Word is that those shows will live on in HBOMax, but I have my doubts. With all the ax swinging going on at AT&T/Warner I could see them being quietly cancelled.

Give Ms Marvel, a muslim girl, the role of counter terrorism spy for the government. Give her family members that are terrorists or a muslim love interest that's a terrorist. There's so much non-PC material to work with.

They are going to whore out the IPs instead of continuing to labor under the burden of decades of contradictory continuity.

I think the 2020 nerds are going to prefer constant reboots, movies, and tv shows over the monstrous tangle american comics has become. It's already enough to keep new readers out (which series do I start with? Which timelines are connected? How do I pull a coherent thread out of years or decades of messy storylines?) so "starting over" with core heroes sounds like a good idea to me.

Item of interest: There are web-comics that grow slowly, there are small independent comics that grow slowly, and the originator of two universal heavyweights - Superman and Batman - cannot survive even in token form. Is that an indictment of the "expand forever" business model of giant corporations, or the inevitable end of a terminal cancer patient?

"Batman" briefly, in the 80s, was second only to "Star Wars" in license revenue from toys etc. - which may have something to do with Jack Nicholson taking a percentage of merchandising instead of an actor's salary to play "The Joker" (allegedly).

And hey, whatever happened to "Sergeant Rock"? "Bayou Billy"? They were DC, no? Memory fades after 30+ years.

Blogger Azimus November 18, 2020 12:35 PM

I'm not a close watcher of the comics world, but it seems like with the exception of legacy intellectual property, DC died 7-8 years ago by intentionally throwing away their customer base and trying to acquire replacement customers in the "woke" bandwidth, which must be a high acquisition-cost, low-retention base if ever there was one...

There is nothing about any of that which would interest any real human, let alone American boys. Girls won't read comics... the few exceptions prove the rule, and are considered freaks anyway. Besides, girls would shred her for her unAmerican sympathies.

Foreigners, especially Chinese, would no more read that than a good American. They know what to do with confused muslim girls. And... boys, and their parents.

Nothing there to work with at all. Even in muslim countries, they would deal with her pretty much as the Chinese do. There can be no confusion. Honor killing takes care of that, and women who dress so slatternly. You. Lose.

Who could have guessed the marriage of comics with live action movies and television series would herald the death of the comics infustry. I'm sure Warner Brothers encouraged the Woke trend, just like ABC Disney did with Marvel Comics, with results that should have been predictable.

Blogger Jamin990 November 18, 2020 2:16 PM

@28

The rot set in years ago.
Marvel comics fell victim first, but were saved when the movies came along.
The films initially focused on classic characters, villains, and storylines that were based on those that were written years, often decades, ago.

Then the woke writers and editors who killed Marvel comics jumped ship and DC were stupid enough to hire many of them, actively inviting the cancer inside. DC doesnt have the MCU money, or similar funds, to shield it so theyve died first even though they were the second to be infected.

At the same time, the MCU have now decided to focus on the woke characters and storylines that killed the comics. expect the MCU to crash and burn hard due to the awful choices theyve made, but they have the perfect cover story in Corona to claim thats why no ones watching their dross movies or shows anymore.

Blogger Otto November 18, 2020 2:21 PM

This is what happens when small companies get bought up by big companies.

Even if DC comics made a profit at all it would be what...a few million at most? To a multi-billion dollar company like AT&T, that's more trouble than it's worth.

The executives at AT&T don't want to spend their time dealing with an unprofitable/tiny-profit comic book line.

Normally, they'd just spin it off to an independent company (so they could make a little money on the sale). But since AT&T wants to keep the intellectual property for movies & TV, the only choice is to kill the comic book line.

Blogger Jamin990 November 18, 2020 2:36 PM

@38
While that sounds like a good idea on paper, it usually fails.

Comic characters like batman do have a long history with dozens and dozens of iconic storylines that the fans love.
If you reboot them you'll either have to reprint those storylines (that wont make sense as theyll reference stories, characters, and events that now no longer exist in cannon), or rewrite those storylines and put them into the new continuity, which is a struggle as new writers, editors and artists always try to put their own spin on the iconic storylines in a way that almost always backfires and makes the storylines less interesting.

Essentially either we end up with a bunch of reprinted comics that dont make sense any more and create their own continuity problems, or watered down versions of classic stoylines that the long term fans hate and divide the fanbase.

Saying that, the best example of that ive seen is how DC tried this very tactic with a series called Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight.
It was a kind of anthology series that jumped around Batman's timeline retelling classic stories while subtly changing elements that didnt fit anymore or were anachronistic, etc.

It worked because they allowed their core monthly magazines to continue printing new storylines, while reworking the history of the character in a separate book that people were free to buy or ignore if they wanted.
This pleased both sides - new fans could buy a title that explained the key elements of the past.
Hardcore fans got to read reprinted versions of the biggest stories from the past, and any problems from those old stories could be fixed.
Also, people who werent interested could just ignore it and buy the monthly magazines.

Unfortunately this level of insight is almost never done anymore, and they either just end the character, then reboot it with awful crap injected into old storylines that the fans are then forced to read (if they want more content), or try to dump almost all the continuity while keeping some big stories that cant function anymore in the new continuity.

Blogger Akulkis November 18, 2020 2:37 PM

>> When did the rot really start in comic books?

When Superman was created by writer (((Jerry Siegel))) and artist (((Joe Shuster))) as a (((Marty (crypto-)Jew))).

The only difference is that the culture war aspects are more obvious now than then -- but Superman was specifically written to be a vehicle for the message that a crypto-alien with black hair and dark eyes who works as a (((journalist))) is more active in fighting for justice and protecting the weakest members of society, than ALL of the rest of civilization.

In contrast, notice how many of the shows which villify pre-WW2 Germany for making a film in which 3 German (with the magic of stage wire) characters presented as Supermen* -- the NERVE of those krauts, trying to horn in on (((Siegel))) & (((Schuster's))) racial superiority propaganda gig. Didn't they realize that's off-limits to the goyim?

Wrong. It's death by deliberate intent. The "stupid" are those who perpetually assume that the deep state is incompetent. (How wonderful it must feel to fancifully imagine that you're smarter than that which is ten million times richer than you and has ruled the world for centuries.)

They are the global banksta cartel; it costs them *nothing* but their own infinite fiat to buy these companies and then drive them into the ground to demolish Western cultural legacies.

Where morons exist, they are pawns and useful-idiots, not those pulling the strings.

Always invert Hanlon's Razor.

Blogger Chris Lopes November 18, 2020 3:02 PM

I wonder how long the movie end of things will remain profitable. With no one really going to movies, that leaves streaming rights as the only real source of revenue. It's hard to imagine even Netflix paying hundreds of millions (what the studios would need to recoup the cost of production) for the exclusive rights of something like Wonder Woman 1984.

Blogger Chip Hazard November 18, 2020 3:03 PM

Blogger SacrificialLamb November 18, 2020 4:53 PM

@55. The "Prometheans" destroying DC Comics by deliberate intent does not preclude political stupidity. It can be both.

Yes, the men who control DC's intellectual property are engaging in blatant vandalism and deliberately destroying DC Comics, but doing so is an unwise decision on their part. Even if they planned to do this years in advance, THEY'RE SURRENDERING TERRITORY. The "Prometheans" might not see it this way yet, but that's what they're doing. The "Derp State" is clever, but not wise. If they stop printing new comics, and abandon the comic book industry.....then they are surrendering territory, and leaving a GAP in the comic book industry.

This is great news.

I understand that some people might feel bad that their favorite superheroes won't be published any more, but you know what? DC Comics stopped being published in 2011 anyway, when they nuked nearly a quarter century's worth of stories and history, and replaced it with an SJW skinsuit.....that practically nobody wants to spend money on or read.

If DC Comics stops printing new comic books, that will REDUCE the subversion and Satanic inversion in the comic book industry.

How is that anything but great?

This is an opportunity for artists and writers to create comic book content THAT PEOPLE ACTUALLY WANT TO READ. And if this article is correct, then content creators won't have to compete with DC Comics any more.

Never interrupt your enemies when they slit their own throats.
