Junior Classics Vols. 1-3

If you missed out on backing the Junior Classics campaign, you can preorder Vols. 1-3 for the next two weeks at Arkhaven and receive backer’s editions of the first three volumes when they ship in December. The non-backer editions of the first three volumes will go into distribution in January. This preorder is for the royal octavo books, there will be no preorders available for the smaller demy octavo size.

Thanks again to all the backers who have waited so patiently for these books. Each volume features original spine and cover art, curated content that combines the best of the 1918 and 1958 editions, and hundreds of carefully selected classic interior illustrations. The backers editions are noted as such on the title pages and feature a special logo on the back of each book. The image above is the cover of Volume 2: Myths & Legends.

If you are a hardcover set or backer and you have not yet updated your shipping address through the "contact the campaign" option, please do so now. Leather and digital backers do not need to update their addresses.

Does this ship to Europe?

Blogger VD November 19, 2020 11:47 AM

Yes.

Blogger Brian November 19, 2020 12:08 PM

Excellent. Well worth the wait!

Blogger thalios November 19, 2020 12:17 PM

Ordered! I did miss out on backing this, so I'm very pleased for this opportunity. Thank you for making this available.

Blogger The Last Roman November 19, 2020 12:22 PM

I have a few Folio Society books. I was thinking of buying a few more until I noticed some of their recently published titles. These include "The Hand Maiden's Tale" and a work by the fat weirdo behind Game of Thrones. It looks like I'll be switching over to a certain Italian publishing house.

Blogger John November 19, 2020 12:24 PM

Hi Vox, was there any sort of confirmation sent to the emails of those who updated their address through the "contact the campaigner" option?

Thanks

Blogger Doom November 19, 2020 12:34 PM

Literally two weeks, or until the end of the month? I know, I know. I've been dying to get involved but things are tricky.

Blogger V. A. Boston November 19, 2020 12:45 PM

I ordered the leather bound for myself/any future kids I have, but I've been waiting for this to order some hardbacks for my friends and their little girls. So excited to give these to them!

Blogger Manster November 19, 2020 12:49 PM

Are these hardcover? I can't remember what the 'backers' version of these were like.
Also, if we order the other volumes in the future as they're made available (as non-backers) will they match these or will they be different?

Blogger The Last Roman November 19, 2020 12:59 PM

Does anyone know a good, non commie, high end version of the Lord of the Rings?

Blogger VD November 19, 2020 1:06 PM

Those of us who have already updated our shopping address, should we be expecting correspondence to confirm the address has been updated or is no news good news?

No.

Are these hardcover?

Yes, case laminate royal octavo.

if we order the other volumes in the future as they're made available (as non-backers) will they match these or will they be different?

All preorders will be backer editions. There will be an opportunity to get backer editions of volumes 4-10 when they are ready. But backer and non-backer will look the same on the shelf.

Blogger fuzzracer November 19, 2020 1:10 PM

Wonderful news. I backed these when my wife was pregnant. My son was born in August and I'm really looking forward to making the first 3 his first Christmas gift from us.

Thanks Vox and team.

Blogger Joe Smith November 19, 2020 1:12 PM

I tried to back this when you originally did the crowdfunding, but IndieGoGo kicked it back for whatever reason and I stupidly didn't check at the time. So, thanks for putting them up for preorder too, Vox.

Blogger VD November 19, 2020 1:16 PM

Do not give instructions on shipping addresses. Due to the IGG system, what works for a backer with one type of perk will not work for another backer with a different type of perk.

Hardcover backers should use the "Contact Campaign" option and send their full shipping address via that.

Blogger VD November 19, 2020 1:16 PM

Hi Vox, was there any sort of confirmation sent to the emails of those who updated their address through the "contact the campaigner" option?

No. We'll do that once we finish updating the spreadsheets.

Blogger Karen took the Kids November 19, 2020 1:20 PM

I forgot about the perk differences, my apologies.

Blogger Johnny B November 19, 2020 1:29 PM

Thank you Vox and everyone involved. Can't wait!

No person lives forever and no publishing company keeps reprinting forever.

Ordered.

Blogger Dave in Ahia November 19, 2020 1:37 PM

Ordered. Totally worth it.

Owen = Royal Octavo, Joe Rogan = Demy Octavo

Blogger Unknown November 19, 2020 1:53 PM

Ordered! I was so annoyed I wasn't in the right place to back these when the campaign started but there's no chance I'm missing out now.

However, SDL and Ilk, an honest question; having been informed I'll hopefully be an uncle early next year (after believing such a blessing was impossible, hence the purchase of the Classics), please could anyone suggest other classic novels for a youngster to read as they grow, both now and as they grow older. I have the following definites and ideas but am open to all suggestions:

The rest of the Junior Classics as soon as they're available.
Sun Tzu's The Art of War
The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings triology
The Chronicles of Narnia
The Chronicles of Pridain
The Greek and Roman Classics e.g. the Iliad, the Oddessey - can anyone recommend a good translation.
This last one I will need advice with - can anyone recommend a good translation of the Biblical parables, especially so they could be explained to and understood by a child?

Many thanks in advance and keep fighting the good fight SDL!

Regards

Zak

I am hardcover set backer, but there is no "contact the campaign" option to update address, neither on the contribution detail page linked from Profile -> My contributions nor from the page linked above.

There is "Contact" button on the contribution details page, but that is a way to send unstructured message and I am suspecting I should see some structured way to store my address.

Is this what you other guys are using to update the address?

Blogger VD November 19, 2020 2:44 PM

Use the Contact button, Mikko. Just send your current shipping address and we'll manually add it.

Blogger Ominous Cowherd November 19, 2020 2:51 PM

Zak, your list is good. Consider the GA Henty books for boys. The pre-1923 Tom Swift books are OK. The pre-1923 Oz books are fun, but not Christian in worldview. All those are available on Gutenberg.

Blogger Karen took the Kids November 19, 2020 3:24 PM

The Dark is Rising is one series Vox suggested and they're incredible books, my kids love them.

Blogger Matt November 19, 2020 3:25 PM

Awesome. Thank you for making these available to those of us who missed out on the campaign!

Blogger James G. November 19, 2020 3:50 PM

@Zak
The Greek and Roman Classics e.g. the Iliad, the Oddessey - can anyone recommend a good translation.

I've just finished reading to my 7YO daughter all of the books that Roger Lancelynn Green wrote for children that are still in print. His Greek Heroes and Story of Troy books are really good. My daughter loved them. And after reading his Robin Hood stories to her, she picked that up herself to read.

I would be open to more suggestions for reading to a 7-8 year old, myself. We've already done Hobbit and LoTR. (She picked up Hobbit to read by herself, but pretty sure her comprehension of it is limited.)

Blogger lynnjynh9315 November 19, 2020 3:53 PM

I did the 'Contact Campaign' option. Hopefully it went through. Haven't heard anything back.

Blogger Inspektadeck November 19, 2020 4:20 PM

Will the leather versions be available for non backers in the future?

Blogger sammibandit November 19, 2020 4:24 PM

We'll do that once we finish updating the spreadsheets.

Oh God. Thanks for the grinding at that.

Blogger Linus November 19, 2020 5:10 PM

Other have said it, but thank you so much, Vox, for making these available to those of us who missed the Backer window. I'm excited to give these to my children for Christmas. Deus Vult

Blogger Cedric November 19, 2020 5:45 PM

Just preordered them, can't wait. Thank you for doing this.

Blogger VD November 19, 2020 6:00 PM

Will the leather versions be available for non backers in the future?

Most likely. But that will be a while. We need to get the conventional hardcovers all done first.

Blogger Billy November 19, 2020 6:18 PM

Do you think the leather versions of the Junior Classics will cost about the same as the Castalia Library books? Debating getting the hardcovers or waiting for the “Gucci” editions. I will make more money so in the future I can just choose option C... both

Blogger VD November 19, 2020 6:56 PM

Probably around 1500 for the full set. It depends if you're more a collector or you want them for your kids. If you've got kids, get the hardcovers.

I expect what we'll probably do is sell a separate subscription for the leather set. That might help us reduce the cost too.

Blogger Jimmy November 19, 2020 8:18 PM

I love the Great Brain series. It is kind of like Little House on the Prairie, but the male version and in 1890 Utah. And funnier than Tom Sawyer.

Blogger xavier November 19, 2020 8:21 PM

Congrats. The books look very handsome and art equally spectacular.

Blogger Billy November 19, 2020 9:23 PM

Sooo it sounds like you said I need one hardcover set for my kids, one for my sister’s and one leather set for posterity. Classical book pusher wins again.

Blogger Michelle_25 November 19, 2020 10:12 PM

Will these arrive before Christmas?

Blogger The Yarn Addict November 19, 2020 11:37 PM

I'm so excited for the release! Thanks for making these available. It's going to up the homeschool game in my house.

As a child I immensely enjoyed the "Little House" series by Laura Ingalls Wilder.
"Watership Down" is great. Someone else mentioned the "Dark is Rising" series...Also, "The Neverending Story", and "The Last Unicorn".
