Avoid like the plague

The Dark Herald reviews the BBC's sadistic assassination of Terry Pratchett's finest literary legacy,

This show hates me.  And it feels quite personal.

I mean, ran over your dog, backed up and did it again, burned down your house, then sent your wife and children to the gas chambers personal. That is the level of individual hatred I felt directed at me while I was viewing The Watch. I am quite serious when I say that this show is the product of extreme mental illness.

Absolute, abject hatred of its source material is evident in every aspect of this production.

The Watch’s art style is a discordant series of nightmare images meant to evoke disgust.  It’s walking into Wonderland and finding Alice’s bloody severed head as the center piece of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party. It’s a Middle-Earth where Sauron prevailed, and Frodo is now one of Nazgul....

It starts with Nobby Knobs meeting with Death. Or at least that is what any fan of the series who was Blissfully unaware of the horrors he was about to endure would assume. They didn’t really get Death right. in the book’s Death is more traditionally a grim Reaper figure consisting of cloak, skeleton and scythe. Here he was more of a giant robot with clawed hands and glowing eyes in the hood. So, they missed the mark there, but they got Nobby Nobs completely right. Nobby is the only person on Discworld that has to carry a certificate that reads: “I, after hearing evidence from a number of experts, including Mrs. Slipdry the midwife, certify that the balance of probability is that the bearer of this document, C.W. St John Nobbs, is a human being. Signed, Lord Vetinari.”  They did brilliantly there.

Except that it turns out Nobby isn’t in this series at all.  Neither is Fred Colon come to that.

No, the guy you thought was Nobby is actually Captain Sam Vimes. This wasn’t trying to meet the mark and missed, this wasn’t even an attempt to try something “a little more modern.”  They would have just race swapped Vimes if that was what these talentless clods were trying to do.  This was the deliberate character assassination of the character of “Sam Vimes, White Patriarchal Male.”

There is a difference between deconstruction and total ablation.

Actually, Frodo as The Tenth Nazgul sounds vastly more interesting than this unmitigated abomination. At this point, I'm beginning to think that Arkhaven isn't so much one of the little mammals skittering around the feet of the entertainment industry dinosaurs as the proverbial asteroid.

It's been apparent for some time that the BBC has been totally converged and repurposed entirely for the destruction of the British people.

because it's COOL. deconstruction, good and evil alike, at least used to be cool. frodo the fallen ringbearer works great for a redemption story OR for a nihilistic screw you for caring gorefest, but either way it's guaranteed to be cool, and cool gets asses in seats.
wokegang, and especially institutional wokegang, don't get this. they see individual instances of cool deconstruction and read it in reverse, "deconstruction cool". that's how you get everything from the sequel trilogy to this latest trashfire. these properties exist to be background noise at condo parties while you're playing beerpong with bugmen, nothing more.

It takes a special kind of evil to f*** with Terry Pratchett.

Blogger Unknown January 13, 2021 11:24 AM

SJW's suck, obviously. However...

Do you think they would try to make decent content if there was some sort of an honest profit sharing on their product? Not Hollywood accounting, but maybe linked to streaming views in week 2-10 or something? Just so they have skin in the game.

Blogger swiftfoxmark2 January 13, 2021 11:25 AM

It seems to me that mainstream entertainment writers are nothing more than the degenerate fanfic writers of a decade or so ago. They have no talent, they have no vision, they have no grasp of what is beautiful or true. Even atheists like H.P. Lovecraft had a better grasp on the good, the beautiful, and the true than these morons.

Blogger Barbarossa January 13, 2021 11:26 AM

Do not tune in the NBA game to see what sort of mockery they're making of the sport. Do not pay to see the latest Wonder Woman to gawk at what a train wreck it is. Do not rent the most recent Star Wars monstrosity because you're curious about just how much more woke it can get. In this era of fake money and unseen financial backers, they've shown they don't care about turning a profit (at least in the short term). They especially don't care about your outrage because in their minds it shows that they've teaching the barbarian a lesson (teaching moments and all that, doncha know?). But they must have attention, and you have a constitutional right to their opinion. Don't give them what they want. Walk away. Turn the set off. Pay attention to your family. Go for a run. And stop making damn excuses about why you simply must consume the product of our sworn enemies.

They are both entertaining and I'd like it if we could get more commenting going on there.

"... Arkhaven isn't so much one of the little mammals skittering around the feet of the entertainment industry dinosaurs as the proverbial asteroid."

Nice piece of imagery.

It's kind of odd that the source material is so badly trashed because Pratchett was woke before woke was woke. His ideological multi-racial Pollyanna-ism is inescapable in the Discworld books.

Screen adaptations of books often stray from the straight and narrow, but the BBC seems to have fallen off a cliff.

Mayhap they are trying to destroy interest in Western literature.

Blogger SemiSpook37 January 13, 2021 12:02 PM

Wasn't even remotely interesting from the promos on BBCA, or as I like to call it "another AMC content dumping ground".

Blogger Sillon January 13, 2021 12:15 PM

At this point, the question is: Was anybody expecting anything else but the show being absolute garbage? It is the BBC!

The BBC is not just converged, it is a full blown parasitic nest spreading its SJW infestation to each corner of the UK

Anything they produce is 100% toxic to the human brain.

I felt sorry for the Dark Herald reading the review.

Blogger Br1cht January 13, 2021 12:20 PM

Their stated goal is to destroy western canon(as per Dana Schwarz´s Twatter and others) so treasure the old and support the new, proper myths that Arkhaven et al are creating.

This was the hardest review I ever had to do, and I'm not joking

Here are some notes from the night I watched this:

"I’m really struggling here.

I’m trying to write down various impressions but I can not absorb anything on the screen.

My brain is almost literally shutting down in a desperate attempt to protect me."

I had to watch this godawful thing in 10 minute chunks. I could not take more than that at a time.

I finally realized around 2015 or 2016 that we had entered an entertainment dark age. Nothing but shit in all the mainstream. Any movie that wasn't complete and total shit to come out in the foreseeable future was most likely pure accident (Upgrade is a nice exception). Actually good new movies would make for a nice change of pace for once.

You appear to be making the mistake of thinking they care about ideas qua ideas. They don't. They care about identity and victory for theirs. Full stop. They treated Pratchett like a bit of an eccentric uncle while he was still alive and could still contribute to Team Woke. Now that he can offer no new contribution, there's no downside to ritual desecration.

That's true, but yesterday's enlightened wokeness is today's regressive fascism. Besides, he was a white male whose books were enjoyed mainly by white males, despite the wokeness that got worse as time went on. Everything we love, or even like, has to be corrupted.

There has never that I can recall been a time when the populace or segments of it were not critical of the BBC and of course the annual payment of a fee for installing and using a television set. The licence fee thus gives rise to the notion that the BBC are not interested in profit. That is not really true as in addition to the licence fee which generates some three billion pounds a year their commercial arm generates another one billion. Even so it cannot keep pace financially with the likes of Netflix. May I also come further to their aid by mentioning that they are under pressure from our Marxist - sorry Tory - government to be as diverse as is possible. They jump to the task with alacrity.

As it happens I do not pay the licence fee and not because I am a criminal but because I do not possess or operate a television set but I do have a radio (the cult of free) and I am afraid to say that my favoured station despite its many excellences is as converged as the television.

Now, Scifi is not really my thing, although I have read a far amount of A.C. Clarke but I did watch the first episode of Dr Who. At the time I was young enough not to grasp that the doctor had an unhealthy interest in young girls and had one locked a in a box. Casting Bill Hartnell as the Doctor after his predatory peado role in A Sporting Life fro earlier in 1963 rather makes the point. To my twelve year old brain however it was all about zooming round the universe fighting evil. Nazis were evil; Daleks sounded like Nazis.

My Father who would have known BBC types always said the organisation and its employees were disgusting. I wouldn't know though I did marry one hence my failiarity with Broadcasting House and Bush House.

Not really. They'd just try to hide it better. At best, you'd occasionally get something that seems better, to try to pull you back in. From what I hear, that's what they're doing with the Mandalorian now. Make a show that seems to be free of the worst of the poz, just tells a story. You can count on them to pervert it once they've gotten enough fans to come back.

From what I hear, that's what they're doing with the Mandalorian now.

Someone showed me a scene of Luke Skywalker fighting black robots, said it was The Mandalorian. They just couldn't leave it alone and let it exist in the wider universe. They had to make it about Jedi's and the Force and laser swords.

Hopefully this CGI Mark Hamill is just a drop-in, drop-out one episode "guest star." I had high hopes for Mando from afar - never seen an episode, I don't have the required services to watch it - but now that they're already doing fan service, they're probably creatively bankrupt and know it.

The worst part is that this "re-imagination" (always wondered whether that's a real term) isn't the worst current TV series out there. "Fargo" (TV series) or "Big Sky"? Not to mention "Lovecraft Country" or that purported "Watchmen" sequel series. All of which have won awards, I'm sure. I don't know about the awards, because I don't do fact-checking when it comes to entertainment industry mutual masturbation.

Everyone loves a good story.
If it contains a message fine.
Retelling a tale from a different angle can be entertaining.
But ripping up well loved stories because some asshole want to preach and bully pulpit the audience or thinking they have a better story to tell and the source material wasn't that good.
Smack's of creative inadequately and spite.

I think you have the wrong take on Luke in the Mandalorian. I'd already written off Star Wars before Last Jedi, and so not watching although I've heard good things about Mandalorian.

Anyway, watched some stitched together reaction videos of people watching that episode, which of course has not one but TWO firece, string womyn. Soyboy youtubers all gaga over the grrl power on display, but then when we got to see Luke as he was meant to be, not shat on like in the final trilogy, they were literally-literally moved to tears.

I had a good laugh at that, but it illustrated the power of an old fashioned honest to goodness heroic white man. There's an unsatisfied hunger for it, and that's a good thing.

Azimus wrote:Someone showed me a scene of Luke Skywalker fighting black robots, said it was The Mandalorian. They just couldn't leave it alone and let it exist in the wider universe. They had to make it about Jedi's and the Force and laser swords.

Through my "sources," I've seen "The Mandalorian." The problem with it is that it is so derivative. The whole rogue element operating in a chaotic universe is always a good vehicle for a story because it is so open-ended. This was done in "Farscape" and "Serenity/Firefly." Mandalorian just borrows from that.

The series basically cobbles together ideas from the Star Wars extended universe, the various video games, and the animated movies.

The Luke Skywalker character shows up only in the last episode of season two.

There is another Jedi for two episodes in the second season, a character that was basically a partner with Anakin Skywalker in the "Clone Wars" animated series.

There is absolutely no originality or creativity in these new offerings. They are just old dudes cobbling together what they remembered growing up with.

Apparently, the new "Mandalorian" will be Boba Fett taking over the same criminal empire run by Jabba the Hut.

Jon Favreau is a grown man. He should not be this familiar with kids stuff.

Arkhaven has nothing to worry about.

It's an open secret in the publishing world that Making Money was the last book that Pratchett wrote himself.

The last five were ghosted.

If you've ever known someone with dementia you know the truth of it. His daughter had to have been digging through his trash can to turn discarded ideas into books.

Pratchett was indeed a Lefty but (and this distinction is important) he was a Humanist not an SJW.

He was trying to show people the error of their ways. Which is a hell of a lot different than demanding you and your family be burned alive if you don't agree that men can be women just wishing really, super hard.

True enough. Now that we live in the wonderful world of streaming, no producer cares about a series surviving for five years.

They just want to get funding for one or hopefully two seasons paid upfront and in advance.

Star Trek Discovery is almost certainly canceled now that Netflix and Amazon are refusing to foot the bill.

The Watch will only be around for one season because there is no way that AMC will pay for more of this crap.

Consequently, they are free to go completely off the Woke chain.

They don't care about profit because they've already made their money and are moving on.

They cannot be artists because they ha e put out their eyes:

Our ethical teachers write mildly against the power of millionaires; but we are not likely to see Mr. Rockefeller, or any modern tyrant, publicly whipped in Westminster Abbey.

Thus, the double charges of the secularists, though throwing nothing but darkness and confusion on themselves, throw a real light on the faith. It is true that the historic Church has at once emphasised celibacy and emphasised the family; has at once (if one may put it so) been fiercely for having children and fiercely for not having children. It has kept them side by side like two strong colours, red and white, like the red and white upon the shield of St. George. It has always had a healthy hatred of pink. It hates that combination of two colours which is the feeble expedient of the philosophers. It hates that evolution of black into white which is tantamount to a dirty grey. In fact, the whole theory of the Church on virginity might be symbolized in the statement that white is a colour: not merely the absence of a colour. All that I am urging here can be expressed by saying that Christianity sought in most of these cases to keep two colours co-existent but pure. It is not a mixture like russet or purple; it is rather like a shot silk, for a shot silk is always at right angles, and is in the pattern of the cross.

I do think it is a good development on the American side of the business, from a storytelling perspective, that they are starting to do intentionally limited run series of 1 or 2 seasons. Tell a solid story with a beginning middle and end, or at least having season arcs that have some closure if more aren't made.

Beats hell out of the old model of run, run, run and milk for all it's worth until suddenly canceled, with a tacked on final ep if very lucky, or a final season long after anyone stopped caring.

But you're right, just like corporate manager class whom failure never sticks to, some of these "creatives" just poison one franchise then magically land on another.

Giving them more money won't fix that. Love of Money isn't a solution to evil and decay.
