TEN Republicans join Democrats to impeach Trump for a second time - by 230 votes to 197 - for 'incitement of insurrection', but Senate leader Mitch McConnell rules out trial until AFTER president leaves office.

I've never been more convinced that The Storm is approaching. Seriously, what on Earth could possibly be the point of this? Or, more pointedly, what on Earth is this supposed to prevent?

Also, in what may or may not be related news, the Italian government is looking very likely to collapse before this weekend. This means Matteo Salvini should be the favorite to return to power at the head of Lega in the elections that the unstable PD-M5-IV alliance was formed to prevent.

Then, when all is done, remind the Democrats that they can't impeach Trump unless he is President...and by dint of holding a trial, have acknowledged him AS President.

I don't think anyone can predict the effects it would have on the world. It's just so outside of anything we've ever experienced that I can't blame people for having a hard time daring to believe it.

The Constitution doesn't allow for private citizens to face impeachment, and (assuming he's got nothing left) Trump will be a private citizen as of noon on the 20th. Best explanation I got is a) enrage Trump supporters in hopes of provoking an incident (or giving them plausibility to stage one) b) ensure he can't run again in 2024 (never mind how old he'll be) and c) dunk on everyone who dared opposed the All-War-All-The-Time bipartisan consensus. But that doesn't seem like enough.

Assuming they're not actually just unhinged, it seems pretty dangerous for this to just be a dunk. This would tend to combine with the announcement that they're not going to open an inquest into fraud to confirm in peoples' minds that the election was fraudulent and Creepy Joe isn't actually POTUS. So whatever they're doing has to be worth further destabilizing the domestic political situation. And for all their efforts, Republican voters still have most of the guns - and have just proven that they *can* spontaneously organize for political action (which they only couldn't do before because they all had jobs to go to).

It is indeed a strange affair. The last tally I saw was 25,000 troops deployed in Washington. They are already all over the place here and I do hope nobody has seen the pictures of them. They are collapsed in heaps in every hallway, in various poses of slumber and crushing boredom.

Poor souls, the entire capital area federal workforce has been given the day off except for them. But this is a traditional practice. What sweet relief it brings to consciences of our intrepid bureaucrats, toadies and sundry tormentors! They are relieved for a day of all pretenses of laboring, but they still get their full measure of pay. The hope of the tradition was to generate throngs to worship the incoming administration, and that's good publicity. That didn't happen for Trump in 2016, only his out-of-towners showed up while the entire body of Washingtonians went to the pubs and jeered. (Although some set fire to a limo on K Street and robbed a bank in a mostly peaceful protest).

They usually hand out hundreds of thousands of tickets to the ceremony. This time it's only a few thousands. Normally that have an absurd parade down Pennsylvania (have to go by the Trump Hotel!), but that's been canceled. Normally they have a bewildering array of pomp and circumstance. Delegations from each of the 50 states throw formal balls, and several other groups. All canceled, so the tell us, but we know they are lying and planning to sneak around.

There was a plan for Mighty Joe the Beleaguered and Heels Up Harris to place a wreath on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in solidarity with our common values. What a poor wretch lies in that tomb. He has seen a lot of abuse, but never on this unholy level. I hope for his sake if no one else that Trump does something to stop this madness.

Database shut down due to query limits hit. The host reset it once, but it rapidly tanked again, so they had to upgrade the account to handle the traffic, and that crashed something else. Fortunately I saw it when it happened, because that was as fast as it could be gotten back up.
