Hung jury in Grisham trial

Some of the jury members obviously refused to go along with the judge's attempt to railroad Chris Grisham's trial:

A six-person jury was unable to reach a verdict in the misdemeanor trial of Christopher Grisham, with the trial ending in a hung jury Friday afternoon. Bell County officials announced they would try Grisham again, with the case slated to start on Nov. 18.
I've seen the video of the arrest. The fact that Grisham was arrested at all was absolutely outrageous. It was mostly because the policeman was clearly angry that Grisham was underwhelmed by the way he was throwing his badge around. It would appear that the county officials determined to keep trying him until they get the verdict they want.

Another Scopes Monkey Trial. Except with actual monkeys.

Anonymous LL October 18, 2013 7:49 PM

The judge, in chambers, apparently called Grisham a "local yokel" (the judge was retired from Houston because no other judge in Bell county wanted the case) and also said he was going to teach CJ & his wife about parenting. From what I heard, it was 5-1 that CJ was not guilty, but the lone hold out was a local police officer's wife. Nice, huh?

Well, at least we can still have a hung jury without having a hanged jury. How much longer until jurors face charges for getting the wrong answer? Wonder if the lone holdout will let Hubs and his co-workers know the names and addresses of the other jurors?

Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison.

Anonymous Salt October 18, 2013 8:14 PM

Log, Grisham has a good case to deliver the officer to a judge and to a jury.

Anonymous LL October 18, 2013 8:25 PM

@Salt, that does not include the first 30 seconds where the cop walks up, asks CJ what he's doing, coon fingers the rifle, handling it by the magazine, and then just randomly starts unclipping it from the harness, with NO WARNING. CJ's hands were out to the side the whole time until the cop started to take his rifle and he grabbed the butt and the barrel, near the front sight, and said, "I'm not letting you disarm me." BOOM! CJ's on the hood with a gun to the back of his head. This case should have been a no-brainer, and was, except for the cop's wife on the jury. They only had 3 dismissals for the jury and the 3 they chose were uber-liberals. I don't know if they even knew she was a cop's wife until the trial started. Pure craziness.

Apparently Log's advice to a soldier is to agree with his adversary, even when that adversary is a corrupt law enforcement officer violating the very law that the soldier was sworn to uphold against all enemies foreign and domestic.

Log, I'm your adversary right now- guess it's your duty to agree with me. And if you truly believe the Bible, than the devil is your adversary too (1 Peter 5:8). In fact, "Satan" means "adversary". So just how rigid is your interpretation of that scripture you quoted?

St. Paul spent some time in prison. Converted a heathen jailer.

Not because he was disagreeing with an adversary, but because he was FALSY ACCUSED.

Sorry for the caps, but C'MON MAN.

If I were still in Texas, I'd bring my SKS.

I've seen the video too (h/t to Salt for refreshing my memory). If there is an open carry law (to go off a comment on that post at AG about the Marine beat by his wife), the cops have to enforce said law whether or not they like it. It's rumored there still is open carry here in the People's Republic of California. I'd like to try that out...er, not.

Anonymous Stg58/Animal Mother October 18, 2013 11:10 PM

Stilicho,

Are you talking an original receiver, select fire Stg58?

3, 000 - 5, 000 depending on condition. Go to the FAL Files and pose the question there. There is where the experts are. Be prepared to post lots of pictures for examination.

Anonymous Lana October 18, 2013 11:11 PM

They should have dropped all the charges, but I'm guessing the lawsuit against them makes them all determined to get something, against all odds, to hang their hats on to attempt to protect themselves. It won't work. Anyone who has seen the video and read the facts realizes it's complete bullshit. Bell County is all good ole boys and they apparently protect their own.

I live in temple and I can tell you, most of the "law enforcement" jackals are like this here. Especially state troopers. Complete power trip.

Grisham def has support from citizens in and around Bell county. And most of Texas-I say that because that really could be any one of us.

Hell, my dad rides around with a black powder pistol under the seat of his truck. And a shot gun in the back seat. That's just how we are here.

Excuse me, just the "local yokels" are like this. Never mind the city dwellers.

Anyway, this whole "trial" is a joke, but also a sign of the times we live in.

The State's Thugs can throw their weight (haha) around and get away with it. What irks me is that they just like every other so called public servant only have the power we allow them to have.

The gov't is long overdue for a curb check.

Blogger redlegben October 19, 2013 12:16 AM

If the jury went 5-1 for defendant, then the public opinion is against Johnny Law. There could be some fun elections coming up. It is always so amusing when people like this don't know when to quit. They scream, "Yes, I'm a witch!" right up to the burning.

Awesome and be careful out there Animal. I've read that its illegal to have a locking folder knife in San Antonio. The organizers are recommending folks travel in packs so the cops can't single out people to arrest them.

Anonymous B Lewis October 19, 2013 12:50 AM

For readers outside of Texas: Bell County, which lies near Fort Hood in central Texas, is a notorious speed/search trap. Ask any commercial driver about Bell County and they will tell you the same thing. Unfortunately, one must pass through that nest of crooked cops if one intends to take the direct route from DFW to/from Austin, San Antonio, or points south.

Anonymous Stg58/Animal Mother October 19, 2013 12:52 AM

Anonymous Anonagain October 19, 2013 12:56 AM

This recent story from Dallas. The cops lied - said the man came at them with a knife. The man was charged with aggravated assault. That private home video tells another story - the truth, which would have never come out.

These POS thugs are not some rogue anomaly, they are the norm. They are demonstrating the government attitude toward the people, their rights, and their property.

The gentlemen in question is, according to a quite reputable military journalist, is substantial nutjob.

See Michael Yon's write up him: http://www.michaelyon-online.com/stalking-soldier-arrested-disarmed-by-texas-police-some-facts-opinion-and-analysis.htm

But he should still get off. This charge is bogus. Rabble rouser or not. Crazy or not.

Anonymous Sojourner October 19, 2013 2:48 AM

Michael Yon is NOT a fan of this guy. In fact kinda surprised at how vehemently he does not like him (has something to do with how he represents the military. Considering Yon is usually very level headed about these things and typically calls out generals and officers for bad behavior I don't know what to think really.

You can scroll down some where he identifies his issues with (says Grisham claims about his military career are lying and so on).

Anonymous Steve Canyon October 19, 2013 3:01 AM

The guy does strike me as a bit of the rabble rouser sort. That doesn't condone the behaviour of the cops though.

The big thing I took away from the video was the admission by the sergeant (aka supervisor) that the police are exempt from the law.

If that typifies the mentality of the police, then the lot of them are corrupt.

Blogger John Williams October 19, 2013 3:05 AM

Hey Stg58, what's a good price on an FN/FAL Stg 58 in near mint condition?
We have one here in Anchorage with the FN scope with integral dust cover, the type with the pointy upside down cylinder.

It's had so few rounds put through it, the bolt takes a bit of coercion to get out of the rat tail. Not sure how many mags come with it, but they are asking $4K for it.

Blogger John Williams October 19, 2013 3:06 AM

The rifle comes with the standard iron sights. The scope is included in it's accessory pouch.

Anonymous p-dawg October 19, 2013 3:09 AM

Not all police are corrupt. It's just that 1%, that tiny fraction of officers, who get a bad name from the other 99%.

Anonymous stevev October 19, 2013 7:30 AM

p-dawg, wtf? NAPALT defense? They close ranks, they back their compadres up, as evidenced in the video. Those who aren't inherently corrupt know their jobs are on the line if they fail to provide a unified front. If that isn't corruption, I don't know what is.

Anonymous LL October 19, 2013 7:34 AM

Michael Yon is a liar. He has never given any actual proof that he has not manipulated, such as the Lazerlyte twitter photo or just flat out lied about. The above linked post has photogrpahic evidence of his non-stop lies and on going personal vendetta. Even all those donations that Yon says CJ's wife went on a "shopping spree" with, that ended up being donated to another soldier to cover his defense costs and the balance went to some gun rights organizations. CJ did not even have access to that money because of how those "fund me" and kickstarter things work! Yon is NOT a reputable "writer" (he doesn't like being called a reporter or journalist). He has sat in Thailand, reposting ISAF and real journalist articles for at least 4 years after being kicked off an embed. He's a flat out lying nutjob. And if you even THINK of asking for proof or questioning his motives or statements, he will ban you from his FB page in a heartbeat, kind of like Scalzi

Anonymous LL October 19, 2013 7:41 AM

Oh, and fair warning, that link has graphic photos of CJ's skin cancer he had before his deployment and it returned during, which was treated upon his return from Afghanistan. But hey, Yon never let's facts get in the way of his narrative, him not even having CJ's medical records or anything, just Yon's declarations of "CJ is crazy." I hate that dude and I've personally blogged about his lies pretty extensively. Anyone who reads here and believes in backing up your assertions with proof should consider the lack which I have poited out.

Anonymous LL October 19, 2013 9:13 AM

Here is another article about what happened. Very interesting roundup. CJ's attorney is a bulldog. Love it.

Blogger ThatWouldBeTelling October 19, 2013 9:32 AM

Yon would not appear to be a RKBA type in the first place, e.g. he accepted the Mexican Guns Canard, as in the Administration line that "90%" were coming from US civilian sources. Don't know if he eventually backed off that position, but that was when I stopped paying any attention to him.

"Bell County is all good ole boys and they apparently protect their own."

Not by a long shot. By uncle, who is the farthest thing from a good 'ol boy you can find and not be gay, was on the grand jury. All he could tell us was there was enough evidence to send it to trial. So, try again.

Anonymous Sojourner October 19, 2013 12:20 PM

I don't know, Yon doesn't seem too "nutty" nowadays from what I've followed him. He's consistently against the administration on the right things and calls out our military at the top for just plain morale destruction (among other things). I know he's been controversial at times but I'd need a lot more to go on than hearsay examples before I throw him under the bus. That's not to say I don't take things with a grain of salt but it's way too easy for people to entirely denounce a person for one item they may disagree on rather than simply , you know, disagreeing. Probably why politics have become so hostile again (among everyday people) because it's become so much about one person as the spawn of satan and the other is an angel in disguise.

Anonymous Anonymous October 19, 2013 3:28 PM

p-dawg, wtf? NAPALT defense?

I think he was making a joke. But yeah, I think you'd be hard-pressed to find 1% of cops these days who would speak out against a "brother" even if they knew he was in the wrong. I know cops who are perfectly nice guys off-duty, and they're probably polite and respectful to most people they deal with on the job. But I have no doubt that if I got into some kind of confrontation with another cop, regardless of who was at fault, they'd forget they knew me.

Anonymous LL October 19, 2013 3:57 PM

Perfect example of Yon's lies. He just put up on FB that he has "insider" info that it was 5-1 to convict but as shown by my link above with an actual JUROR'S information, it was the opposite. Yep, stellar "writer," that Michael Yon.
