Safety has its price

I don't see why this poor federal air marshal is being prosecuted. Given that TSA agents can strip-search women and molest them up in the name of airplane safety, shouldn't this guy be praised for his diligence in ensuring there are no underwear bombers boarding planes?
A federal air marshal has been arrested and accused of taking cell phone photographs underneath women's skirts as they boarded a plane at Nashville International Airport.

Nashville police say Adam J. Bartsch was on duty on Southwest Airline Flight 3132 on Thursday when a witness noticed he was taking the photos and grabbed his cell phone. Police say the witness notified a flight attendant and Bartsch was taken off the flight and charged with disorderly conduct.
Has our society descended to this, when an innocent government employee simply doing his job of protecting the public can be harassed and even charged with a crime?  Why the next thing you know, the NSA will be banned from poring closely over naked pictures being sent from teenagers' cell phones!

I share your confusion. If it is okay to have the TSA put their hands all over passengers, how can it be an unacceptable level of intrusion to take pictures of them?

Anonymous Giraffe October 18, 2013 1:09 PM

The poor guy didn't rank high enough to get a shift on the full body scanner.

Anonymous anon123 October 18, 2013 1:09 PM

He was merely anticipating the next great threat- the Tampon bomber. Kudos to Mr.Bartsch.

OT: Looks like the non-natives are getting restless

Sorry if this has been posted, but I saw it and couldn't stand the entitlement mentality leaking out. Looks like the separation of those who are vibrant and those who aren't may be taking another step forward.

Or our enslavement to the vibrant.

His real crime is having his cell phone turned on, since we all know those can be used to bring down an airplane.

I'll take care of the trolling up front:

The flippant attitude you are all demonstrating toward both women's rights and public safety is both appalling and typical of you evil right-wing fundie Tea Party Christian bigoted monsters. Next thing you'll be doing is hanging Steve Jobs from the nearest fence and forcing women not to travel by airplane unless they're wearing burkas. You probably bought some of the pictures yourselves.

Also, you're just jealous because you'll never get as close to a woman as he did. I would never sleep with you. You're stupid, unlike me, because I have degrees in Womyn's Studies and Airport Security.

I actually like the idea of being in a plane full of ninjas.

It's his education. He thought it was in the pubic's best interests.

Anonymous Stilicho October 18, 2013 2:00 PM

What a dumbass. Didn't he know that he was supposed to separate her from the crowd for "additional investigation" first? The system exists for a reason!

Blogger swiftfoxmark2 October 18, 2013 2:11 PM

You mistake what he was doing as being part of his job. His job was fire his gun wildly in the direction of any bipolar person who uses the word "bomb" in any context.

If he had been TSA, that meant he would have been doing his job.

The difference is the TSA agents get paid to do that, where the air marshall doesn't. Really this is a violation of union regs.

I've read the blurb a number of number of times and I can't tell. Is this sarcastic? I am not comfortable allowing marshalls or anyone to manhandle my person or my family. I am confused why VD would be so gung ho for giving the TSA or other government workers cart blanche. If anything we should be happy to have this guy in jail...

Anonymous WaterBoy October 18, 2013 2:30 PM

Sarcasm, dh.

Learn it. Live it. Love it.

Anonymous CarpeOro October 18, 2013 2:30 PM

This is pure sarcasm dh... a few years or perusal of the archives will make that clear.

Ridiculous the effort some people will make for a few lousy upskirt pics.

Obviously this is all just part of the long-term, wide-spread phony propaganda war whipped up by the Tea Party/Kochtopus axis to discredit the federal government and all such diligent agencies including the TSA just because they hate Obama to the point they're willing to let the terrorists win!

I'd really rather not be raped. Since His Lordship and I are married and all...Y'know, once you've gone jotun, it's on him you're dotin'.

Agree with the sentiment that his actions were not wrong by comparison to other agencies, but he was out of his jurisdiction. The job of the Sky Marshal is to harass old Caucasian ladies with thorough searches of their carry-ons while making sure that no one on the plane so much as looks as a haji passenger with anything other than loving adoration - because profiling. Instead of taking pics of women's crotches, he should have applied for a TSA post where he could fondle them instead.

Blogger Revelation Means Hope October 18, 2013 4:57 PM

"Instead of taking pics of women's crotches, he should have applied for a TSA post where he could fondle them instead."

But with thin rubber gloves on, and THAT makes it not molestation and a grievous invasion of personal privacy far beyond the imaginations of our founding fathers. Ah contraire, it makes it more like a medical examination.

Blogger CostelloM October 18, 2013 6:12 PM

They are working on a law that will limit criminal prosecution of teachers caught having sex with students. I see that hasn't been broadened to include all government employees, or simply hasn't gone through yet. Give them time. They have been busy stripping the middle class of it's wealth. One damned thing at a time, don't ya know?

Anonymous DT October 18, 2013 6:19 PM

Blogger Rick Caird October 18, 2013 6:24 PM

Remember, you no longer have an expectation of privacy. Just think what kind of pictures the NSA has of you.

No, I agree, the guy should have been commended for extra diligence in case another underwear bomber had gotten through.

Anonymous DT October 18, 2013 6:25 PM

They are working on a law that will limit criminal prosecution of teachers caught having sex with students.

But at the same time, they will push a 15 year old teenager to suicide for streaking at a football game.

Some days you just wish it would all crumble and burn.

If these women were not terrorists, then what did they have to hide?

That they had been slacking off on their wax jobs, thereby threatening the economy and lowering Obama's poll numbers.

But you folks claiming he was out of his jurisdiction are just wrong. He was doing his job. The TSA harasses passengers in the airport. Air Marshalls harass and terrorize them on the plane. It's a layered defense - those people not discouraged from flying by the TSA are discouraged by the Air Marshalls. And frankly, the TSA only gets those people not discouraged by the parking and traffic design at the airport.

It must be a plot by the AMTRACK lobby.

"Perhaps he was simply checking for fuses?" - Vic

As explained to me by my father after I accidentally walked into the wrong bathroom once.

"Yes son, what you saw is indeed a fuse, and a rather short one at that."

Anonymous castricv October 18, 2013 10:15 PM

I am amazed that someone grabbed the marshall's phone without being arrested as a terrorist.....

Anonymous whatever October 19, 2013 12:02 AM

This quote made me laugh...
"TSA does not tolerate criminal behavior."

Criminal, non-criminal, legal, illegal, good, bad, evil, nice, not nice, feelhurt, feelgood, prior restraint, it's all up for grabs now in the brave new world of the USSA.

Welcome to the future, and be damned!

@VD

Im reading up on Roman history for a NWN mod Im thinking of scripting, and this article got me thinking.

Its clear you are incorporating a lot of historical elements of the end of the roman republic in your ATOB series, but do you ever incorporate elements of the current tragedy? Could anyone pull that off in a realistic way?
