Part of Vox's ongoing collaboration with a cartoonist, I presume?

Nice. The effect of fearsome combined with ridiculous is great. Cartoons need "ridiculous" when depicting a mortal enemy, or else the audience gets demoralized.

The Horseman just love it when you notice. Last century was the first, this the second. If all ride when one rides, there is a preeminence, until the end. The clock can be reversed. Prayer. Lots of it. Only a delaying tactic. And yet, I think for the many, for the day, that is usually enough. If they know that is the way. Still, I don't think you all have it in you, not enough of you. And why do you suggest Europe? Insurrection, War, is everywhere. In the air, hearts, and minds. Foreigners, civilians, governments, a trifecta of poisoned secular thoughts. I do consider islam a secular institution, of course. And, maybe, the church close enough to being dead to fall.

Blogger Markku November 16, 2015 10:00 PM

You normally return the scythe the same path that it cut on the actual strike. The only artistic liberty here is that there is no reason to actually raise it that way. It would remain on the ground. But obviously a proper cut is about to be made, and a previous one has been done prior to returning it. Hence the blood on the blade.

Who will feed the monkeys when the white man is gone? No white women will have children of color if there is no food stamps, unless raped. Outside of work I respond to "you know what they say once you go back" with "why would anyone want to become a single mom". Even if the children are smarter than blacks they are still at Dominican republic level cognizance.

You normally return the scythe the same path that it cut on the actual strike.

the train is fine, Markku, the train is fine.

to all of you complaining about the inaccurate depiction ...

it's an image composition problem.

in order to portray the reaper using a 'proper grip and stance', you'd either have to widen the image ( creating dead space / requiring more filler ) or you'd have to obscure the blade behind the reaper / clutter up the image by superimposing the tool over the user.

also, the figure is more intimidating this way. it accentuates size and aggressive intent, much as a wild animal would fluff out it's fur or spread wings to appear as large and tall as possible. or a bear rearing up on it's hind legs. anatomically, the bear is more maneuverable and dangerous on all fours ... but even bears know they're more impressive up on their hind legs.

the same explanation applies to critiques of the blade orientation relative to the shaft: sure, you could draw it more 'anatomically correct'. but as currently drawn, the aspect ( and threat ) of the blade is maximized. if you rotate the blade aspect to 'proper', you would make the blade look thin and insubstantial.

this is partly why many cartoon figures are often drawn with only three fingers and a thumb. due to the limitations of line drawing, actually drawing four fingers usually makes the hand look too 'busy' unless a lot of attention is devoted to it.

Blogger Danby November 16, 2015 11:02 PM

in order to portray the reaper using a 'proper grip and stance', you'd either have to widen the image ( creating dead space / requiring more filler ) or you'd have to obscure the blade behind the reaper / clutter up the image by superimposing the tool over the user.

Well, if you want to get all artfaggy, the scythe is used to both cut and collect. That's why it's shaped the way it is, and why it's used in a certain way. The Grim Reaper doesn't fling shit all willy-nilly--he reaps.

So, from a metaphor standpoint, the art missed a good opportunity. It's still a neat image, but anybody with a modicum of knowledge will assume that the artist acquired his primitive farming knowledge entirely from death metal album covers.

The train is fine.
