Let the witches burn

Milo asks if the Right should try to save the universities from the rampaging SJWs:
Students of history will notice an alarming similarity in the video above to the “struggle sessions” of Maoist China, a form of public shaming in which perceived enemies of the Party would be surrounded in a public place by Red Guards, Mao’s most zealous supporters. The Red Guards would hurl abuse at their target until they confessed to their crimes.

Uninformed critics might argue that the Red Guards were a weapon of the Communist state, and not a genuine grassroots movement, but they’d be wrong: the Red Guards started out as a student movement, on Chinese campuses. Afraid yet?

College staff finally are. Earlier this year, Vox published an essay from a liberal professor who confessed that the zealotry of his own students frightened him. Earlier this month, Salon published an article from a black feminist film studies lecturer, describing her “disastrous” attempt to accommodate her students’ strangely aggressive emotional fragility. It seems the left, and especially the academic left, has finally woken up to the Frankenstein’s monster that they’ve constructed.

You’ll forgive me if I lack sympathy. Conservatives have warned for decades that the proliferation of women’s studies, colonial studies, gay studies, and an assortment of other oppression-studies courses would end in tears. We also warned you that campus speech codes were a bad idea.

And when conservatives and critics of Islam started being banned on campuses up and down the country, we warned you that a tidal wave of zealotry, intolerance, and even totalitarianism was coming. Now it’s here. As a famous internet meme goes, you only had to listen. Now it’s too late.
No, we should not be saving them. We need to build alternative institutions and keep the SJWs out. One infected and infested, the only solution is to burn it to the ground. If they want to start the cleansing fires, let them.

I'm seeing some convergence here....

The answer is to follow the excellent example set by Sam Hayakawa when he took over San Francisco State College in 1968. Mass arrests.

There are students who have paid good money for an education. The tantrum-throwers are denying those students what was paid for, which makes them thieves. And they should be treated as such.

According to my nom de plume, I should be right there starting, or at least helping start, these alternative college institutions. Unfortunately my love for universities and college systems have been excoriated painfully years ago.

Maybe instead of a college system, we just have something completely different? The Internet opens up some interesting possibilities.

I know a white knight in real life and I delight in pissing him off on social media (he's one of these only white people can be racist idiots). He always doubles down when I call him on his bullshit. He is a white, overweight, balding middle age male who suffers from clinically (not self) diagnosed depression and bipolarism and is middle of the road in his choosen career path at best (when he does see fit to work and not suck at the tit of permanent disability). Needless to say he seems to fit the stereotype.

Another contributing cause to this nonsense: grade inflation. In an attempt to make their undergraduates look more employable or better qualified for grad school, universities have made it more and more difficult to get bad grades. It's almost impossible now to get a C, let alone fail a course. So now you have a bunch of 18-22 year olds that not only have all sorts of time for this crap because they're not studying, but also think they're more intelligent than they are because they're getting As and Bs "without even trying."

Vox is right. These great institutions that were built to protect the enlightenment have failed.

If you look hard you can find a few that are still carrying the torch.

The original and rightful purpose of the university was to be an incubator for thinkers -- to bring them together to create a multiplier effect while they study and think and learn from each other. That raises the question: is it necessary to have buildings and a campus for that at all anymore? It's nice if you can afford it, but is it necessary, or are the people who really want to do that already doing it online where they don't have to deal with the PC and the skyrocketing costs?

"Let’s get something straight right now. You have no right to be unoffended. You have a right to be offended with regularity. It is the price you pay for living in a free society. If you don’t understand that you are confused and dangerously so. "

Exactly!!

As the top comment when I read the article said, "I'm glad I went to an engineering school." Though I did not major in engineering, I went to two Morill land grant engineering schools, one for undergrad and one for grad school. By and large my experiences were very positive. However, I realize that has probably been the exception.

I agree, Vox: start constructing alternatives. I'm certain by the time my future kids are of college age, we'll have a solid alternative.

@8 Interesting. Given your family lineage, I wonder how many of your ancestors went up against the Muzzies. I remember in high school we took an entire semester out of junior religion to learn about other religions. Biggest. waste. of. time. ever.

@10 To your first question maybe have a vetting system: only permit known persons (close friends and family who aren't SJWs for example) to partake. Since these entities will be privately held, I'm sure there'll be a way to get around federal rules on non discrimination. To your second, how would you push back the tide of SJWs? Remember, subordinates have to obey their superiors generally speaking.

@22 That gets me how it's almost impossible to get a C. I'm glad I was in when I was: it most certainly was still possible to get a C and, gasp, even fail a class.

I have an alternative to establishing alternatives: federally defund all of them. See which ones survive. Where I went to grad school, the alumni are mainly right wing so the faculty can only get away with so much. We threaten to pull donations (aka funding) and they step back in line. Brings a smile to my face.

@31 Send them where I went to grad school: Texas A&M. You will not be disappointed, I promise. One of my buddies was getting his PhD in petroleum engineering. He's kicking ass now. For your other that wants to do nano or aero, may I recommend my undergrad, Purdue. Cradle of astronatus, 'nough said. The latter recently, courtesy of President Daniels and FIRE, guaranteed free speech.

Let's see: I work for a university.

1. Alpha Progeny did the health sciences intermediate (eight papers: got a good "A" which led him into (at 19) Pharmacy school. The cut off grade to get into med school from that year was a High A+: 92% as an average.

2. I've just finishing marking final year medical school papers. The grade range was from 10% to 90% in the question me and my boss marked. And he produced the highest and lowest mark.

In the Commonwealth, there is NO four year degree then graduate school for something useful: we do not use the Oxford model, but the scottish one. The Faculty of Arts is shrinking. Many of not most brignt people do Health Sciences or Science. We HAVE to keep our degrees rigourous because they are a method of us earning money (Overseas students at 20K a year) and we struggle, to keep Universities in the top 500 on world grading (Mine is in the top 200: However I got my degrees from its upstart cousin, which is now in the top 100).

The Ivy league may die. Your four year degree model has to die. Most people need either High school plus apprenticeship or a BA plus specalised masters (often later).

Heh. I teach a little bit at a college. The free .PDF from SJWs Always Lie is a part of my instruction from Aristotle's Rhetoric. They are afraid of me but more afraid of violating my mandatory attendance policy. When I had 50% failure on the initial reading comprehension quiz, they knew the jig was up, and started acting like actual scholars.

At that same college, not 20 minutes ago, I heard someone broadcasting the Joe Rogan/Milo Yiannananannaapolis (it sounds like the Takbir battle scream when I spell it that way) interview. While in the toilet. No, I'm not joking about this in the least. If I were going to guess, it was because the guy was more interested in Joe Rogan's idiotic psychedelic drug revisionism than in Milo, but Milo was getting the biggest laughs. From everyone.

While I am completely convinced that an online Men's College ($50/semester per class, non-accredited) would absolutely gut the debt-fueled freak studies behemoth that has become the modern university, I do think that there may yet be just a little juice in them thar grapes.

Thus says the LORD,
“As the new wine is found in the cluster,
And one says, ‘Do not destroy it, for there is benefit in it,’
So I will act on behalf of My servants
In order not to destroy all of them."

However, as a born-that-way pyromaniac, I will not be displeased if all we end up with is a great big fire. Best. Frat party. Ever.

I read this somewhere else, the main article. I kept thinking, how? I do not think it is possible to correct those institutions. As for replacing them, I am not sure that is possible as things stand. Lawyers and judges won't allow proper institutions to be built. They would simply impose, or shut down, any institution that doesn't cow to these types. They will bankrupt them. I honestly think that until the courts and lawyers, laws and politicians, and lower education, is fixed, there isn't even a way to build a positive upper level educational institution. Maybe wrong, but I don't see it making it past the many and more powerful gatekeepers. Not in America.

It'll take more than just burning down academia. In many ways, academia is a symptom as much as a part of the problem. Economic collapse would be a wonderful start to fixing things though. It may be required. Same with political impotence through social disgust and resistance. Starters, and probably only parts of the fix, even then.

Actually, conservatives are trying to salvage it. And they have been for decades. That usually just draws them in and breaks them down, producing cuckservatives or those broken out of the system. Some going galt right out of the gates, others stumbling a bit further before going that way. Just as with politics, about the only way to break it is to abandon it. They aren't winning through involvement.

How will such new institutions be built, and how will they be kept from being infected?

Who says we need institutions? One of the greatest losses to our culture was the idea that self-made and self-educated men can't possibly be as capable of contributing as someone with accreditation. Accreditation is a scam. The purpose of universities the last several decades has been a screening for corporate recruiters. Eventually, the corporations will need to be purged too. In the meantime, there's already a growing awareness that college isn't all its cracked up to be, and people can have better standards of living, debt free, and more freedom, by learning a good, skilled trade and getting good at it. Apprenticeships and trade schools are the future, not universities. Unless universities undergo a serious change to their entire charter.

That said, the entire university paradigm isn't worthless. Just because many schools are worthless doesn't mean that literally all of them are.

What about institutions we probably don't want to be totally liquidated and rebuilt, such as the military?

Wrong. Liquidation and rebuilding, based on the militia paradigm popular during and shortly after the Revolution is exactly where the military should be. Right now it's just an incestuous boondoggle for big government and big defense contractors.

The University of California gets twice as much money from the central government as from the State of California. The Narrative is the excuse to keep it flowing, because they are Doing Good. But demand keeps building for an alternative. Even the students are catching on. One of the magazines from Stanford (I get two every month, I don't know how to get them to stop) complains about collapsing enrollment into Political Science: from 74 on 2010 to 47 in 2014, out of an undergraduate student body of 7,000. Daniel,

Calling me a coward for seeing how things are isn't what will work. First, I don't have the capacity to build, or obstruct, such constructions of such institutions. However, I can clearly see that laws have broken down good institutions, and the lack of defenses and protections have ensure even new institutions with good intentions are broken and quickly. Believe as you like. Do as you like. You have been warned.

If there is something to do, I think Gaiseric has the basic plan down. Abandon institutions, turn our backs on them and simply go our own way. Many are doing that. From rolling their own presses through ebooks to educating outside of the classroom to beginning to import and export workers of a specific nature outside of the usual employment opportunities. All of those things are being done right from this blog.

There really isn't a way to build some things through official channels in such polluted waters. I simply disagree with your belief. Not that nothing can be done, only what you are suggesting has been done and failed miserably, over and over.

A libertarian theory of government among free adult men may have much to commend it.

A libertarian theory of education does not.

Note that the Yale Master failed in exactly this way. Whether he comforted the students or debated them, all can agree that he failed to master them. And the students responded like a woman with a weak husband: utter contempt.

This is comedic -

I. We demand that the University of Missouri System President, Tim Wolfe, writes a handwritten apology to the Concerned Student 1-9-5-0 demonstrators and holds a press conference in the Mizzou Student Center reading the letter. In the letter and at the press conference, Tim Wolfe must acknowledge his white male privilege, recognize that systems of oppression exist, and provide a verbal commitment to fulfilling Concerned Student 1-9-5-0 demands. We want Tim Wolfe to admit to his gross negligence, allowing his driver to hit one of the demonstrators, consenting to the physical violence of bystanders, and lastly refusing to intervene when Columbia Police Department used excessive force with demonstrators.

II. We demand the immediate removal of Tim Wolfe as UM system president. After his removal a new amendment to UM system policies must be established to have all future UM system president and Chancellor positions be selected by a collective of students, staff, and faculty of diverse backgrounds.

III. We demand that the University of Missouri meets the Legion of Black Collegians' demands that were presented in 1969 for the betterment of the black community.

IV. We demand that the University of Missouri creates and enforces comprehensive racial awareness and inclusion curriculum throughout all campus departments and units, mandatory for all students, faculty, staff, and administration. This curriculum must be vetted, maintained, and overseen by a board comprised of students, staff, and faculty of color.

V. We demand that by the academic year 2017-2018, the University of Missouri increases the percentage of black faculty and staff campus-wide to 10%.

VI. We demand that the University of Missouri composes a strategic 10 year plan by May 1, 2016 that will increase retention rates for marginalized students, sustain diversity curriculum and training, and promote a more safe and inclusive campus.

VII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding and resources for the University of Missouri Counseling Center for the purpose of hiring additional mental health professionals -- particularly those of color, boosting mental health outreach and programming across campus, increasing campus-wide awareness and visibility of the counseling center, and reducing lengthy wait times for prospective clients.

VIII. We demand that the University of Missouri increases funding, resources, and personnel for the social justices centers on campus for the purpose of hiring additional professionals, particularly those of color, boosting outreach and programming across campus, and increasing campus-wide awareness and visibility.

Wrong again. Individual tutelage, apprenticeship and study worked for generation after generation after generation. The institutionalization of education, on the other hand, only worked for a fraction of that time. And much of the time that institutionalized education via universities was happening, it actually more closely resembled the individual apprenticeships, tutelage and individual study than it did the mass market formal education system that we have today. It has a great deal to recommend.

As I recall, wasn't it the church that created institutions of learning? Our model of public schools was derived from Martin Luther's ideas, as I recall.

Don't bother to examine a folly; ask only what it accomplishes.

Will any actual learning take place as a result of these policy demands? Since none of them have anything to do with learning, the obvious answer is no. So they can only have another purpose.

Blogger rcocean November 09, 2015 5:14 PM

As for"Conservatives saving the universities" LOL. Conservatives have nothing to with 90 percent of the colleges in the USA. We're not welcome except to donate money and have our kids pay tuition. If you attend College, conservatives are supposed to be seen and not heard. So we couldn't save them, even if we wanted.

An on-line university sounds better every day. Ilk State University. University of Ilk. Dread Ilk Academy. All on line filled with courses that matter. Who cares if it's not officially accredited because any potential employer would know any graduate would be head and shoulders above the norm. SJWs would have no intention of participating simply because they wouldn't be capable of anything intellectually.

Some may think that a Hillsdale type college would be the answer, but the cost of attending a brick and mortar institution is getting harder each year.

Their faculties are full of PC idiocy, too

I'm afraid I didn't make my point clearly enough.

The politics of their faculties don't matter all that much.

It's sort of like prison in that regard. The warders have a very limited influence over the internal politics or their prisoners. So it is with professors and their student bodies. No matter what the professors like to believe.

The student culture of the Service Academies remains relatively sound. No matter how goofy their profs are at the moment.

BYU-Idaho basically doubled its enrollment in a few years by adding classes across the country taught in the local churches and online. The biggest part of the program is called "Pathway". It gets the people who can't afford college or can't get into college to give BYU-I the old college try. 25,000 in Pathway and Online in Fall 2015. There were 18,000 in fall 2014. It really is only a 3 semester or 1 year program to start out, then into a very inexpensive online degree program. It gives people something to shoot for and has had amazing results because it gives people hope. The current cost to get a full Bachelors Degree is $8160 total.

See pathway.lds.org and after the first year pathway.lds.org/Main/DegreeOptions
And the costs are at pathway.lds.org/Main/Cost

And in case you were wondering, no, SJW's do not do well at any of the 4 BYU campuses.

Not true. They used to accept state scholarship money, but quit doing so about 10 years ago. Regardless, if you want the best rigorous and classical education without the PC nonsense, Hillsdale is as good as it gets.

SJWs don't do well as there is a serious gate one must get through when you complete Pathway and wish to enroll in one of the online programs at BYU-Idaho - the endorsement of your Bishop. Actually, tests are a pretty good learning device. Allowing students to do remediate is a good idea if they can demonstrate mastery of the material.

Anonymous A.B. Prosper November 09, 2015 7:37 PM

We can actually get by with a minuscule military, just enough to maintain a basic navy, some air defense and nukes,

This would have huge advantages in terms of keeping the US from meddling and forcing other nations to maintain their own defenses as well.

This will save American lives also

As for Universities, we don't need them either. What we need is knowledge and as odd as it seems, proper open Internet regulation will do the job nicely.

The caveat might be some kinds of laboratories and the like for research, we will need those.

Of course a future, after the fthe new Right is running things , foreigners expelled and institutions face the consequences won't be very glorious, a society with few institutions, no real university system and few state institutions won't necessarily be poor, it could be fairly wealthy but it might end up very fractured and pre-modern as well.

It is workable though and without any key institutions for SJW's to get hands into. a lot less Leftist.

Speaking as a middle-school teacher, here - for some of my students, just seeing them show up is a victory of sorts, and I cheer them on - journey of a thousand miles, first step, all that jazz - but I also make clear that life will demand more than that, it's just a necessary first piece.... and the next one isn't a lot more complicated.... just do what the teacher asks you to do.

My goal is the student demonstrate they have learned the requisite material. I make clear to them the important tests in life will not be graded, and they may not even know they were taking it, and there certainly won't be do-overs... But adding fractions? Yeah, I can give them another opportunity to study, learn, and re-test. It won't be as fun or as easy as the first time they took the test, and there will be some extra writing that the ones that did well the first time won't have to do, but the stated goal of the class is to learn the content.

Demonstrate learning, earn the grade. Don't demonstrate learning? Don't earn the grade.

But, again, with a note that the "real world" isn't normally like that.

"The libraries."
The uni where I am has, over the years, been selling off quite a lot of its books second hand in favor of online books and journals. Has anyone else seen this at their unis? Now might be the time to start an archive

I'm a bit concerned that we may have a digital library of Alexandria, where disruption to net communications means the loss of a significant amount of knowledge.

As for online instruction, this sounds great for fields that require only writing and coding, what about fields where you really need to get your hands dirty i.e. chemistry/engineering?

It's amazing what kind of cuck this Wolfe character is.

Does he really think he is going to get another job like this?

What he simply should have done was suspend the football program for two years, fire the coaching staff that went along with it, and forfeit any games. The students can remain on their scholarships but their football careers are over.

Nobody can force you to resign, but you can do a lot of damage along the way.

I'm seriously beginning to wonder why a business would hire any of these recent graduates from the known SJW infested colleges. They are only asking for trouble.

@59 & @65 Well, let's go back a little while. Can't the blacks see that they have caused these racial slurs and backlash? They are out of control. They can destroy private property in Ferguson and Baltimore. They can stop traffic in various cities across the country. They can kill cops. And now they can get a university president fired by refusing to eat and play football. All without consequences.

Having had some time to think while watching the world series of poker, I think someone should call their bluff.
