SJWs always minimize

SN wondered when SJWs will stop trying to dismiss Castalia House:
How many No. 1s do you think Castalia will have to publish before the rabbits stop referring to it as "an obscure Finnish publisher"?
Well, we know the answer is "fiver", since we've already published more than five #1 category bestsellers and rabbits can't count past that. I'd have to look it up, but I believe we're approaching ten by now. We happen to have three at the moment, and only narrowly missed having four at a time, as 4GW Handbook was #1 in Military Strategy last week, but has fallen to #10 now.

In case you're wondering, as I did, how Grow or Die and Compost Everything could both be #1 in Gardening & Horticulture, the answer is that whereas Grow or Die is #1 in Gardening & Horticulture, Compost Everything is #3 in that category, but #1 in the Gardening & Horticulture > Gardening Techniques category. So apparently it gets its own little orange ribbon too. Which is nice.

Anyhow, it really doesn't matter what the rabbits say, think, or do. The fact is that we've barely gotten started. We just put out our first press release last week, our new Editor-at-large is just gearing up to get rolling, we will have a new announcement to make in the near future concerning audiobooks, and the retail channel that is the primary reason Castalia even exists is very close to launch at last.

We haven't made any noise in the science fiction and fantasy categories yet, but we will. We fully expect to become the leading publisher there in time, but we're not in any particular hurry to get there. Our focus is excellence, and everything we do is with the aim to improve upon what we've done before. We have great authors, authors such as John C. Wright, Martin van Creveld, William S. Lind, and Jerry Pournelle, and we have some younger authors that we are in the process of developing, but our depth is still somewhat thinner than we would like. But we will not sign up new authors simply for the sake of putting out more books. Our goal is for me to represent the low bar for Castalia House.

We know we have the best support any small publisher could hope for, and we are intent on proving worth of your trust. We aren't going to publish any stinkers because we have to get X number of books out per quarter, and while we may make the occasional esoteric call from time to time, we have the luxury of simply refusing to release substandard works.

You may not have made "noise" in sff yet, but those categories are far more susceptible to mindless followers of sjws. You got Pournelle to come back for more There Will Be War, and have been publishing some amazing new work, notably by yourself and Mr. Wright. As the catalog grows, so will CH's influence.

Indefinitely. We will make mistakes, but not more than once. We will not make a habit of publishing them.

Just wondering (because I was looking forward to reading ASoS over Christmas last year), have you finished the first draft (or whatever professionals call it) yet?

Blogger Dave November 24, 2015 7:18 PM

Where do we see the press release? As CH grows the company website could use a media center section for media inquiries, company news, and press releases. Eventually as you receive more media coverage that should be highlighted and linked to. All in due time understandably. Right now press releases and latest news items at a minimum. There's no FB correct? I dont know if Twitter really works for this info?

As you grow, and climb from success to success, please take the time to remake your online store. I went there to purchase something a few weeks ago and literally took half an hour to find it.
Presenting your entire offering as a list that the potential customer has to scan through the entirety of in order to find what he's looking for works great when you have five or a dozen products. When your pushing 60 products, it's slow and frustrating. Having only the (very similar) covers, with no text only makes it worse.

Get a web designer in there, quick.
Because, damn.

Blogger Eric Wilson November 24, 2015 8:00 PM

Danby, agreed. Also, the store on a phone is very frustrating too. Last time I tried, I couldn't scroll to the right to get to the book I wanted to buy.

VD, thanks.

In other news...

I didn't purchase a book today from the soon to be obscure publisher known as "Tor".

Vox Day is not your bitch.

Kidding aside, there are a lot of folks awaiting that book, even those of us who thought the dragon had caught the dwarf in the beginning.

Congrats on Castalia's success. You may continue taking my money.

My goal was and is to be the #1 gardening writer in the world. That crashed into Vox's goal to be top publisher. Providence has smiled on both of us and it's turned out to be an excellent alliance.

Blogger Dave November 24, 2015 8:19 PM

Blogger VD November 24, 2015 8:24 PM

Vox, does Castalia have a 'newbie' reader? Or do they just publish established writers?

Theoretically. We're generally too busy to get through the submissions though. We have two first novels we will be publishing next year. I'd recommend on trying to write something for Red Horse or There Will Be War first rather than a complete novel if you want to work with us. Most of the new stuff we've seen has not been original; too many people are clearly rewriting what they've read somewhere else.

There is far too much obsession on how characters feel and overt attempts to play on the readers' emotions and too few interesting ideas.

Our goal is for me to represent the low bar for Castalia House.

That's not really a low bar. I think I read a couple of chapters of The War in Heaven books, and there was room for improvement, but all the Selenoth stuff and is rock solid. So was A Man Disrupted.

... A Mind Programmed is only available in Kindle? Hm... I guess that's OK.

Blogger Brian November 24, 2015 8:37 PM

"We fully expect to become the leading publisher there [in SFF] in time, but we're not in any particular hurry to get there."

Considering Castalia House's drive and willingness to take informed risks, the outcome when you do decide to go head to head against your ossified competition won't resemble small fast mammals vs. dinosaurs so much as asteroid vs. dinosaurs.

Blogger Aeoli Pera November 24, 2015 8:58 PM

Maybe I should try my hand. Most of my ideas aren't very good but everybody says they're "interesting" and I can put out a relatively large number of them per day.

Blogger Markku November 24, 2015 9:18 PM

I went there to purchase something a few weeks ago and literally took half an hour to find it.

There's that search downloads -field if you knew the title in advance, and the bookstore-tab is a mouseover that gives you the categories if you didn't. Admittedly, the mouseover doesn't work very well with mobile devices. It does work, but you have to tap the category very quickly or the list disappears and it goes to the general list.

Per a recent comment by Vox, yes. But it's in line behind There Will Be War I & II, van Creveld's Equality, Riding the Red Horse 1, Cuckservative, and JCW's City Beyond Time.

And don't make me beg for book 2 of Somewither!

JCW posted something about that on his blog recently.

I guess I had better get working on Bond Ghaynigga Bond, How to Dress Your Glock: The Barbie Doll of Handguns, and BigGaySteve's Prepper Guide to Surviving the NigApocalypse(you wouldn't want to be less prepared then an puff). I will have to put a section on growing mushrooms on logs with plugs for VIT D in the latter.

I should have gotten the survive the Nigapocalypse book out before this: http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2015/11/24/many-predict-chicago-will-riot-burn-loot-after-cpd-release-officer-body-cam-footage-chicago-officer-charged-with-murder/#more-108978
Be careful people.

The left has horrible luck with poster boys-http://theconservativetreehouse.com/2015/11/23/wow-msnbc-poster-boy-for-islamophobia-arrested-in-turkey-for-being-isis-terrorist-cell/

Tonight's NCIS New Orleans rewrote the history of Katrina. The biggest crime during Katrina was committed by 3 white thieves, with blacks being the victim. No black cops looting Walmart on TV, no groids shooting medevac helicopters, no raping looting, murders or Mayor Ray Nagin embezzling more than the 3 white people stole in the show.

Blogger Geir Balderson November 24, 2015 10:29 PM

I am not sure if this is viable but, can a publisher offer you a program whereby a reader is automatically sent new #1 books as they are published and rated. It might be fun! A number one book of publisher club. It will be a good nudge for me as i tend get in a reading rut and this 'club' would gt me out of my bubble. This may have been covered before, but I don't recall seeing it explicitly stated:
I see quite a few books under the Castalia brand (label, imprint?) that are available on Amazon but not directly from Castalia. I suspect that is driven by monetary issues, i.e., you make more from Amazon and _may_ have to give them exclusive rights to distribution for some titles. And I understand that. But I would prefer to have straight epub versions not tied to Amazon. (Note that I have purchased quite a few ebooks from Amazon. It's just not my first choice.)
Any chance that we could see more of the titles available direct?

Anonymous Stickwick November 25, 2015 12:49 AM

The way Castalia House is being dismissed by SJWs reminds me of the way the media tried to dismiss Ron Paul in the 2012 election. He was coming in 2nd in the polls, and instead of pursuing this rather interesting story, they pretended like he didn't even exist. Likewise, you'd think some "obscure Finnish publisher" consistently producing bestselling books would merit some serious commentary, but it seems the SJWs are going to stick with the ignore-it-and-maybe-it-won't-exist approach.

@43 In theory, a cop with actual balls could've tased and maced the idiot while a gunner covered.

In practice, the extra shot(s) fired at the downed target were extra.

16 hits is coward spam. "He's coming right for us!" Give him one somewhere nonvital and let him think about cooperating. But no, cops always empty the clip and peer-pressure fire.

Frankly, it would've been safest and funniest for dashcam dude to ram the dindu in the street. Russian cops would've.

Not that I'm complaining about the outcome. Blacks and cops killing each other is just as great as Muslims and atheists killing each other.

Now when Muslims kill good Orthodox Christian soldiers, THAT calls for a drink. A toast, really, to the end of the world.

New ventures take time, Castalia House will thrive and jealously shall wane silent. Rabbits and the SJW opposition that attacked our host in an extremely inappropriate, unjust, weird and unprofessional manner are simply not part of the picture or CH business plan.

Once again we see that Gen X'ers resist and reject being bullied into submission from critics who are utterly contemptible as humans with their untenable manners of persuasion, in other words, the critics failed!

CH will be just fine, the right men, blessed of God are leading.

Christian Injuns are due for an Uprising. Way overdue. U.S. injuns I mean. They shouldn't just take it blithely, people peeing on their Teepee Rugs and whatnot. Hunting fellow Christians. Taking scalps.

They should get their paleolithic on. They've finally got something worth fighting for. A real future and a war they can win.

Maybe Carlyle Gets A Clue is a gesture.

Castalia House is very important to me because I have kids.

I need a source of entertainment, be it books, movies, tv shows, music, etc, that doesn't demonize, denigrate and demoralise my children for being white, hetero, male, cis or Christian.

When CH redeigns the website, it should seriously consider a reseller section for non-CH works from external distributors like, say, Amazon.

So I need some children's DVD or movies? I go to CH and buy them there such that orders are relayed to Amazon. CH gets the referrer cut and I get peace of mind knowing the poison has been pre-filtered out. Win win.

If CH needs funds for such a project, I'm willing to donate ten (10) bitcoin.

Like I said, I need this. And I'm not the only one.

Hard copies that are out and available in all major online stores: Awake in the Night Land, Victoria, SJWs Always Lie, History of Strategy, Compost Everything.

Questions about if and when a particular title that is not in that list is going to be released as hard copy, will probably be ignored or shall receive a polite non-answer, unless it happens to be a title that we are currently working on. In this case it's There Will Be War, volumes 1 and 2 in the same covers.

As a general rule, a pump should be less likely to malfunction than a semi, but a good one of either should be reliable enough for that not to be a problem.

So it comes down to get whichever one you're more comfortable using.
