I'm in. Used to love Wing Commander. If Star Citizen ever comes out, it could actually bring me back to gaming.

Registered. Will join a bit late, because Orthodox Vespers ends right at 6 pm tonight.

Have you sorted the teething problems that happened with the gorilla mindset session? I couldn't see that one. Hopefully Markku has done all the deeds that need doing.

I think that was Mike's internet connection.

Have you sorted the teething problems that happened with the gorilla mindset session?

Yes. An update caused my main system to go wonky. The other problem was Mike's connection.

It'll definitely be interesting to see what comes out at the end of Star Citizen's development. I don't have a background in the gaming industry, so this is all rank speculation, but here is what I expect:

As Derek has noted, Star Citizen's Kickstarter began without so much as a tech demo; the core of the gameplay is still in development, and, even having poached many former CryTek employees, the criticism that the engine was chosen more for graphical fidelity than simulation capability rings true.

The other big concern, of course, is the funding of the game through continued "concept sales." While it's been unarguably successful at raking in cash, it seems like it would be better to sell things like alternate skins, etc. that would be easier to put in backers' hands than wholly new game assets. Sale of cosmetic items seems to hack people off considerably less, and would mitigate the stench of "pay-to-win" that hangs around the concept sales.

Ultimately, I would not be surprised if the single player comes out, albeit missing most of the co-op play that was talked about earlier in development. I expect it will have a moderately well-written storyline with some pretty neat cutscenes, and the gameplay will be alright. It'll most likely be even more delayed, however, and it's anyone's best guess when backers will start jumping ship.

The persistent universe component, however, is likely to be disappointing to the many people who expect Star Citizen will be the Game to End Games.

Pay to win wouldn't be that bad if you didn't know someone had a legitimate $20,000+ advantage on you, starting the game with 5 death stars.

I am so bummed I can't watch this. Kids have a music recital at the same time. I loved the brainstorms I've attended. I'm sure there's no way this will be recorded?!?

I'm happy to join a Brainstorm for the first time. The whole topic got my interest from reading about it here once. I like the idea that somebody see's something a little fishy, and starts to investigate it. And then peculiar things start happening.

Blogger hurin November 07, 2015 3:19 PM

The reality is that new players who payed $50 for a small ship after the game came out, will not wan't to compete against old backers who payed $10000 and are sitting on a whole armada. Also what is the point of playing if you can just outgun everyone and everything?

Cool, thanks

@Joseph,
Minutes.

Robert's resume was the demo. No one doubted his programming abilities. People just assumed his management & producer skills were on the same level.

@13, I was just wondering, because I have yet to receive it.

Blogger Markku November 07, 2015 5:50 PM

Giuseppe is referring to the fact that it didn't work on the newest OSX. Over that, we have no control. It's not our software. You'll just have to try.

Derek was a classy guy. Watched with two of my sons who are interested in game development. Great interview - thanks.

Thanks for the session Vox. The subject wasn't fully my cup of tea but I still enjoyed the conversation.

RPGers who have used min and maxing, should have suspected differently though.

@14 Then again, some skills don't transfer 100% to offline psychology.

Another insightful Brainstorm. I got the impression Derek Smart knows what he is talking about and is not prone to hyperbole. He clearly explained his reasoning behind his analysis of the SC situation.

Blogger Patrick November 07, 2015 9:23 PM

Did Chris Roberts try to buy the rights to Wing Commander for this game and he was refused or was that never part of the plan?

Anonymous Dave November 07, 2015 9:56 PM

Thanks Vox & Derek for the Brainstorm session. Derek is very astute, articulate and his 30 yrs experience in the biz shows as well. Kept my attention for a full two hours and I don't remember ever hearing of Star Citizen until recently. Of course now the correct play would be to get Chris on or some SC rep. for their side of the story.

This pushes me to around 95% committed to signing up for an annual Brainstorm membership, however I do have some concerns about the Webinar technology wrt to the sound and video snafus. Will this continue to be hit or miss each session? What, if any, possible upgrades or steps can be taken to improve?

Viidad: Derek was a classy guy.

Yep. Definitely mischaracterized. But what else is new.

How is this game going to be different from Eve Online?

I have not played it, but I have read that Eve Online is like trying to stakeout land in gang territory.

We've determined the audio problem was a fault in Derek's mike wire.

Good to hear it's an easy fix. Does that also explain the video issue?

Does Webinar allow for scheduling mini test sessions as an equipment/connections check? Say a 15 minute session a couple days prior to the real session with actual viewers to provide feedback.

Blogger VD November 08, 2015 5:17 PM

No.

Theoretically yes, practically no. But that should only affect the 15-minutes of the guest speakers anyhow.

Anonymous Forrest Bishop November 08, 2015 5:59 PM

@28. VD
"Does that also explain the video issue?"

No.

Smart said he had a fast connection and all on his end. What if the speaker logs off and logs back into the webinar program, essentially rebooting the connection. That works on Skype.

Blogger Markku November 08, 2015 10:32 PM

It probably was fast on the downstream, but I wonder if that's true of the upstream.
