When I say it, it's funny

But when YOU say it, it is mean and it is not funny and you should stop:
It turns out that saying “the train is fine” has turned into a rhetorical tool by assholes to needle people they disagree with, so much so that just the other day I received almost a thousand hits on the video because of another author’s invocation of the catchphrase.

Being a parent of a child with autism is not a great experience. You get all the hardships of just being a parent, plus the additional burden of dealing with a child who does not have full control of his or her emotions or cognitive state. It can be frustrating, even heartbreaking, and because of that it’s good to be able to step back and laugh a little. But one thing we should not do is turn autism itself into the joke, or accuse people who are not autistic of being disabled themselves....

I’m not going to tell people how to comport themselves online. As I said above, I don’t even expect this entry is going to change anyone’s mind about anything. What’s more, I figure at least some of these assholes will come around and leave hateful comments because I’m daring to point out their thoughtlessness. That’s pretty much par for the course for people who think disabilities are a joke. At the same time, I’m not going to simply watch my blog stats tick upward based on the assholish behavior of others and say nothing. I try to be inoffensive here, but come on.

You will note I’m not naming names. I’m not into the shame game. If someone chooses to out themselves on their own blog or in the comments below, that’s their business, but I’m not going to gather up a bunch of villagers, arm them with torches and pitchforks, and send them en masse toward the castle. That’s not my way, and while it may have been in the past, it isn’t any longer. I’m content simply to say my peace and be done with it.

All I ask of those of you reading this is: stop it. You think you’re being clever and funny, but you’re not. You are being an awful person, and while you might believe it’s for a good cause, whatever point you’re trying to make is lost. Sure, your friends might have a hearty chuckle at how you called someone autistic and isn’t that hilarious, but those of us who live the struggle are not laughing. Our kids aren’t laughing. Our brothers and sisters and cousins and nieces and nephews who suffer with ASD aren’t laughing. It’s not a joke.
I'm so glad he's not going to tell people how to comport themselves on line. Because if he had, I might have been inclined to observe that it's not hard to see how the acorn doesn't fall all that far from the tree. Fortunately, he didn't, so I won't.

It clearly escaped Mr. Speech Policeman there that "the train is fine" is not utilized simply as a means of needling those with whom one disagrees. It is utilized as a rhetorical means of demonstrating that the person with whom one disagrees is focused on the wrong thing, often to the point of seeming obsession. In other words, the behavior is observably similar to that of an autistic person, which is why the application of the phrase is funny. Humor is contextual, after all.

As it happens, I find this attempt to take offense at an unapproved use of the phrase to be ironic because it has effectively replaced something most people would tend to find rather more offensive, namely, the demand that the interlocutor "stop sperging".

Which just goes to show that there is absolutely no point in paying any attention whatsoever to these idiot speech police. Considering the lengths to which they go to find offense, I would think they should be abasing themselves before me and expressing their heartfelt gratitude, not whining and crying... except of course that seeking attention by whining and crying is the whole point of the exercise.

The train is still fine.

UPDATE: Our own Autistic Commenter, ER, comments.
I happen to be autistic so I feel qualified to respond to Sam: Shut the fuck up you attention-seeking virtue-signaling hypocritical speech-policing pussified retard! The train is fine!
UPDATE II: And Azimus makes an apt observation:
The most fascinating aspect of all this is the guy Sam Hawken somehow manages to contort himself into a position where the original material mocking autistic people is funny, but a simple reference to it is offensive. I would love to give the man a piece of paper and a pencil and ask him to map out how this makes sense to him.

Actually, my Aspberger-stricken brother does indeed laugh when we joke around like that so callously. Where the hell does this guy get off?

Crazy timing, I just typed up a mini-rant on spergs today.

Something I don't think the sperglords realize is why exactly they sperg out. It's an emotional reaction from essentially "triggering" themselves on some small detail, so they wind up focusing on said unimportant detail, but it always gets rationalized away as some sort of "logical" thing, because when not sperging out, sperglords are generally meticulous orderly people.

I don’t call people names or imply that they’re mentally incompetent. I don’t use the word “retarded.”

People don't use the word "retarded" to make fun of the genuinely mentally disabled. They use it to make fun of window-licking mongoloids.

But anyway, who is Sam Hawken?

White nationalists might be wise to steer clear of train references.

Anonymous Chad November 23, 2015 5:44 PM

What's even funnier is that he outlines your point in its entirety in his preamble. To take offense with your comment and remain consistent he would have to take offense with the video it references. I mean it's ok to have a skit make light of autism, but don't go around using it as a rhetorical device.

SJWs are always all about changing terminology about controversial topics then declaring the new terminology unacceptable in turn. They can't recognize the fact that they are trying to erase an idea instead of merely trying to make a conversation more polite. And they are always at liberty to tell you what you REALLY mean.

Blogger Jew613 November 23, 2015 5:44 PM

Considering it's the guy who actually made the video asking people to stop, and not just some random person, I don't see how this is the speech police gone too far. It's obviously some form of speech policing, but even this blog polices what can and cannot be said without being banned. However a guy complaining about people negatively using something he invented he hardly the same thing as going to any length to find offense.

It's mildly amusing that Hawken has appropriated what was a comedy sketch by the Onion for his own hobbyhorse. Apparently it's Hawken's comedy sketch now.
Funny thing is, I had some dealings with Hawken back in his 1018 Press days. This is about par for the course.

The ONN Autistic Reporter went full Nazi after the Madrid train bombing, and was let go by the network. He was last spotted interviewing Breivik using expired media credentials. As a man with an autistic and mentally disabled child, I hereby give you all permission to use "The Train is fine" and find it funny.

Blogger LP999 November 23, 2015 6:20 PM

But when a AWCA who is also our gracious host says it or uses it in a tweet it is hilarious. I read the other thread regarding the topic from 11/15 or 11/16. It hel;ped brighten my day.

It was amusing. Vox made a annoying critic bow out when Vox used the train comment twice. The critic had their mind blown by reality!

I ran the video by my captain (dad) who quickly corrected me, "my child, stop laughing when trying to tell a joke and let me listen to youtube."

Before dad went blind he was sending me a few of the aspie videos from skit version CW aspergers or from something about the newscaster from the Onion. I'm dense as fog to begin with and again, hilarious.

No harm done, no harm meant.

Let us recall Vox was patiently interacting with a person gone ugly in discourse so Vox has every other option at his disposal, he opted to use the most comical one.

OT: The account is fine.

Dad and I took out a line of credit on our shared account about 4 years ago or maybe 3 years ago. It is $5000 we never spent. But the bank closed out the account when and proceeded to bill the account into the negative of $300.00+ for not using the line of credit. Post closing, the bank sent me a note stating such plus a request to call them to talk about repaying such fees.

Seriously.

I call to inquire what happened and was told the account is fine.

LP: "I closed this account in 2014, we never used the line of credit, correct?"

Bank: "Yes, its the account that is closed and that is fine with the dept."

Bank: "You must repay us the fees."

LP: "I require more clarification; we didn't use the line of credit which was fine, then are penalized for not using the line of credit, correct?"

Bank: "The account is closed and the account was fine but now its closed, wait, we are wrong, you dont owe any fees. Everything is fine, disregard this phone call."

Blogger Rabbi B November 23, 2015 6:22 PM

That’s pretty much par for the course for people who think disabilities are a joke.

What a retard. We have a family in our community who has three "special needs" kids: two with prader-willi syndrome and one with severe downs. They take the challenges all very much in stride and affectionately call their kids retards all the time.

A typical conversation between these parents and the doctors at a check-up:

Doctor: "Well little Johnny isn't walking just yet . . .

Parent: "Yeah, we know that. That's because Johnny's retarded . . ."

Doctor: "Well, just a little behind in development . . .

Parent: "Yeah, like I said, retarded . . ."

Doctor: **Squirming and uncomfortable** "Well, uh, er . . . we prefer to say developmentally disabled."

Parent: "Oh, so you're retarded too."

Classic. When did everyone become so shame-based and pussified in this culture? Cripes.

Anonymous Chad November 23, 2015 6:23 PM

@19

He deviated from the narrative. Raising a 'differently gifted' child should be just as enjoyable or even MORE enjoyable than raising a 'normal' child. At least it would be if those horrible other parents would stop rewarding their 'normal' kids for excelling at 'normal' activities. His only regret should be that his child wasn't blessed with blindness, deafness, or some other progressive gift.

I'm sure the SJWs will correct him in due time.

There is a nice lady at church who is convinced her oldest son is an Aspie. Loves trains (no joke, he does), obsesses about little things, very detail oriented, totally clueless about girls though he has a girlfriend. My wife was being very kind. I asked when he started engineering or architect school. Turns out, the latter and in the fall.

I have yet to meet a hard core engineer who isn't a little Aspie. And I include myself in that group. When I hear parents obsess about it, I typically go talk to the kid, and ask what he wants to build. More than a few have gone on to be engineers making large machinery.

And the trains they build are just fine.

No. And you're a fascist shitlord for noticing that odd people have come up with a strange term for normal people, almost as bizarre as cis-gendered. (Of course, being neuroatypical, I'm weird enough to be offended on your behalf. You're welcome.)

Oh, Aspergers is real, although whether it is a disability or not is an open topic. 2 of my kids are diagnosed with it.

Jay Will @35: Why is the train still fine?

Because we can wash the brains and viscera off of the train, and it is still undamaged, which is to say fine. And sure, a man is dead, but we need to focus on the important thing, which is that there could be a backlash against the train. Which is fine.

No.

I have yet to meet a hard core engineer who isn't a little Aspie.

If they only behave that way in conjunction with their work, then it's either 1) you don't understand the immense criticality of the tolerance on the position of the emblem, or 2) engineer is only somewhat competent.

The most fascinating aspect of all this is the guy Sam Hawken somehow manages to contort himself into a position where the original material mocking autistic people is funny, but a simple reference to it is offensive. I would love to give the man a piece of paper and a pencil and ask him to map out how this makes sense to him. It would be a very good growing experience for him I think.

So Sam Hawken went full retard?

Anonymous A Fine Train November 23, 2015 8:25 PM

I’m not going to tell people how to comport themselves online.

As soon as I saw this line I stopped reading the article and said to myself "He's going to do exactly, precisely, and unambiguously that."

All I ask of those of you reading this is: stop it.

Blogger rumpole5 November 23, 2015 8:27 PM

Firstly, Most men are somewhat autistic. Our natural ability to focus (and ignore input that the ladies pick up) is a real strong point when something actually needs to get done. Men are teased constantly about this "insensitivity" trait, especially by SJWs, Alan Alda types and pajama boys. We are supposed to "man up" and take it. And we do, because another male trait is the ability to enjoy and employ humor.

Secondly, because left wing SJWs dish it out, they will just have to learn to take it. Turn about is fair play, and although the mangled, humorless pajama boy is being hosed off of the cow catcher, the train is indeed fine.

'Being a parent of a child with autism is not a great experience.'

The, what? YOU are supposed to be the adult in the deal. Is that what you tell your kid, too, that being the parent of an autistic kid sucks? Too bad you weren't normal like me?

I've lived with profoundly autistic folks, and my experiences were very different. No, it's not easy, especially for parents and primary caregivers. The nonverbals especially can be mucho worko.

But the payoff! and if your ottie kid isn't a 'great experience' whose problem is that? Not society and not mean people. You can be sure I don't let anybody mouth-off to mine. People rarely try.

I don't consider autism a pathology that needs a 'cure'. Nor a mistake by God. I like my otties the way they are and make do with what's in front of me. Get an attitude change and figure out that you don't have a disease on your hands, but a gift. It does not come Pre-assembled, so here you are complaining.

If you are overwhelmed, find dads with experience, get some decent advice. Many of them are quite happy with their autistic children and know the ropes.

These creatures are perfectly intelligent rational beings wholly submissive to the sins of pride and self righteousness, deception and vainglory, and this alone makes them as stupid and slow on the uptake as someone with a brain disorder.

I also give you permission. My son is not their shield.

Perhaps Mr Speech Policeman is actually worried about the train?

Luckily there was no structural damage caused to the car's chassis, so it was only a matter of cleaning the train to remove the human debris and return it to a pristine state.

While the train is in the box it is both fine and not fine at the same time.

It is only when we open the box that the probability wave collapses into a state of fineness or not fineness of the train.

How do the human remains on the train affect the probability of the fineness and not-fineness of the train when you open the box?

Look, you don't want to be in prison.
