Social justice convergence on social media

It's easy to see they are terrified of the rising tide of nationalism, because they are absolutely determined to try to stop the signal. But all they will do is guarantee their own demise:
The two largest social networks, Facebook and Twitter, and the world’s largest search engine, Google, have teamed up with German law enforcement to delete “hate speech” within 24 hours in what is being seen as a last-ditch effort to silence public dissent about a gigantic wave of Syrian immigration.

The partnership to crack down on what Germany deems illegal speech comes after German law enforcement’s reported concerns about “racist abuse” posted to social media after the country’s huge and extremely controversial import of over a million Syrian refugees.

Justice Minister Heiko Maas is reported to have warned social networks that they must not become “a funfair for the far-right” and that “the benchmark to be applied will be German law and no longer just the terms of use of each network.”

Specialist teams will be used to track down, examine, and remove offending posts, and the process is not to take more than 24 hours.
The only reason they think they can do this is because they believe they have a monopoly on the rightful use of force. But because they have betrayed the Westphalian bargain that granted it to the State, they have lost the necessary Mandate of Heaven. History suggests that events will proceed accordingly.

You've heard of technocratic government, but the Merkel regime is the first technostasic one.

Related: Leila Janah - We Need to Screen Social Media Posts (And Not Just for Visa Applicants).

I think she lays out the thought process of modern totalitarianism very well.

------------------------------
That we can spend thousands of dollars screening a visa applicant and then claim it “impossible” to review him or her on social media is a cop-out. Several Silicon Valley firms, including my own, use automated techniques and human review to screen social media accounts in a process known as sentiment analysis. Companies like ours conduct this work routinely and could probably perform basic social media background checks for under $25 per person, a tiny fraction of the overall cost of a visa application.

At the very least, the government has a duty to understand whether my posts pose a threat to other citizens. At most, the government has a duty to regulate this type of speech. This is a much lower level of scrutiny, than, say, wiretapping.

But surely we only need this kind of scrutiny for visa applicants, right? I’m convinced that these rules should apply equally to US citizens and residents. I don’t believe in borders, and I don’t believe many other millennials do either — the Internet has rendered borders obsolete in the world of ideas.

We can no more “keep out” extremist views and people from our homeland than we can keep out funny cat videos. That’s the price of global connectivity, a price we willingly pay for the incredible benefit of free worldwide communication, knowledge, and community.
Domestic terrorism, like the kind we saw in Colorado, is also linked to hate speech and extremism.

Mass shootings in the United States will continue until we dissolve the political gridlock around gun control. But at the very least, while our politicians debate, the Department of Homeland Security should take steps to add social media screening to the visa application process. The FBI and local law enforcement should add basic social media screening to their existing techniques to prevent horrific crimes.

This is relevant to your earlier post about Libertarianism because it highlights the essentially amoral character of capital. It is this, combined with the revolutionary destructive power of capitalism--the only thing Marx got right, really--with regard to tradition, with combines to make the right uncomfortable with business and economic-based theories like libertarianism, as its maintenance is vastly at odds with the long-term perservation of a moral and decent society.

Name a gun control proposal by an actual politician that would have actually stopped any mass shooting in the last 20 years. Then name one that wouldn't have infringed on the 4th and 5th Amendment rights of Americans.

cui bono, who makes money from the coming civil wars?

Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson decided against ending a secret U.S. policy that prohibits immigration officials from reviewing social media posts of foreigners applying for U.S. visas, according to a report by ABC News.

Johnson decided to keep the prohibition in place in early 2014 because he feared a civil liberties backlash and “bad public relations,” according to ABC.

“During that time period immigration officials were not allowed to use or review social media as part of the screening process,” John Cohen, a former acting undersecretary at the Department of Homeland Security for intelligence and analysis, told ABC News.

in other words looking to see if some cute young pre hijab age wide eyed refugees have parents who posted that they are going to cut fucking infidel heads off would seem raciss, So we won't go to such extremes. think about that.

From the related article:

"Complaints will be examined by specialist teams. And the benchmark to be applied will be German law and no longer just the terms of use of each network,” he added.

The three US companies also pledged to make it easier for users to report offending posts. A monitoring mechanism would also be put in place to review whether the system is working, said Maas.
"

One wonders what the criteria for applying German law to an individual post might be:

1. Someone based in Germany according to their profile details;
2. Someone posting from within Germany based on their IP address;
3. Any post visible to a German user, regardless of the poster's location ("imported" comments);
4. An arbitrary mix of all of the above.

Add in the possibility of removal based on specific user complaints, and I see a large number of "non-German" posts also being deleted. Somehow, I don't think these will even matter at the review phase, either.

Mass shootings in the United States will continue until we dissolve the political gridlock around gun control.

Define "mass shooting." If it includes 4 guys getting shot in a drug turf beef, or a single shotgun load hitting 4 people partying in the street in Rockford, IL's slum (true story, this is an actual "event" included in the PBS "story" on mass shootings) then you're dumb as a wooden post.

A solid 90% of those PBS propaganda-ploy article "mass shootings" are typical Englewood (Chicago) gang rivalries. Not one of the guns is legally purchased or carried, and IL/Chicago has the whole wish-list of gun banners (need a license to buy a gun or ammo, no AR/AK type guns, 3 day waiting period for handguns, 24 hr for long guns, etc.)

I'm sorry. Anyone who brings up "more gun bans" is revealed as utterly without a clue, much like our vaunted political/chattering class who immediately after San Bernadino's shooting began promoting new laws they admit would have had no effect on the shooting that prompted their latest idiocy. I mean, they admit to pushing a non sequitur and no one even BLINKS?!

The Westphalian system established the idea of a state as we understand the term - a polity defined by independence of action. A state may be constrained by outside force, or constrain itself by treaties, but not through legal means operating without the state's consent.

A nation-state is a state that is also a nation. A nation being a group of people with a shared history, language, and culture.

American readers should start studying the art of Samizdat as well, even if technologically literate people can circumvent various attempts to monitor and regulate the internet with free floating mesh nets or establishing dark nets for their own use. Samizdat allows you to place information and memes anywhere and reach out to people who would otherwise be inaccessible.

What I find humorous in a dark way is the shortsightedness of these people. Whether it is throwing away the facade of competing political parties such as in France to keep out FN or the attempt to shut down all dissent. What do they think? The bad thinkers will just shrug their shoulders shake their heads and go home never to be heard from again? The actions they take to try and head off the coming wave of nationalism is actually going to work to accelerate the coming wave of nationalism. Not that I mind of course. If your enemy is busy setting himself up for defeat don't stop them by all means but still, it's humorous to observe supposedly smart people make such obvious mistakes.
