Trump, the proto-Destructor

A great column by Glenn Reynolds in USA Today:
Enter Donald Trump. People who are unhappy with the things Trump is saying need to understand that he’s only getting so much traction because he’s filling a void. If the responsible people would talk about these issues, and take action, Trump wouldn’t take up so much space.

And there’s a lesson for our ruling class there: Calling Trump a fascist is a bit much (fascism, as Tom Wolfe once reported, is forever descending upon the United States, but somehow it always lands on Europe), but movements like fascism and communism get their start because the mechanisms of liberal democracy seem weak and ineffectual and dishonest. If you don’t want Trump — or, perhaps, some post-Trump figure who really is a fascist — to dominate things, you need to stop being weak and ineffectual and dishonest.

Right now, after years of Obama hope-and-change, a majority of Americans (56%) think Islam is incompatible with American values. That’s true even for 43% of Democrats.

In that sort of environment, where people feel unsafe and where the powers-that-be seem to be, well, weak and ineffectual and dishonest, the appeal of someone who doesn’t seem weak and ineffectual grows stronger.

You can see this in France, where the long-marginalized “far right” National Front is now winning elections all over. It’s doing so well because the French people, after not one but two Islamist mass shootings in Paris, feel that their government is not serious about protecting them, and their way of life, from their enemies.

Likewise, it’s a bit hard to take people seriously about Trump’s threat to civil liberties when President Obama was just endorsing an unconstitutional gun ban, when his attorney general was threatening to prosecute people for anti-Muslim speech (a threat later walked back, thankfully) and when universities and political leaders around the country are making clear their belief that free speech is obsolete.
Glenn is making two very important points here.
  1.  If the ruling parties break the laws and manipulate the democratic rules to keep out the law-abiding, democratic nationalists, they will soon find themselves facing the the lawless, anti-democratic, and violent ultranationalists. They are methodically cutting down the very trees of respect and authority that protect them from the people.
  2. The ruling Left has made it clear that they have zero respect for our free speech or our unalienable rights. That means we need not respect theirs.
The mainstream media and the political establishment pretends to be frightened of Donald Trump in order to try to keep American nationalism down, but they should treat him fairly and let the chips fall where they may rather than play their games in order to defeat him. Because despite being somewhat of a bull in a china shop, Trump plays by the rules. And others are watching his example, and learning from it.

Our "democracy" has become a joke, and the elites have been on a wholesale looting spree since the 1970s. Trump is exploding the myth that this has been anything except a catastrophe for the middle and lower classes, so the looters will do anything to stop him.

Blogger Timmy3 December 09, 2015 6:18 PM

Yeah, I wonder if he will win. Until both the right and the left, the Republican and the Democrats, begin to lose, then we will be in the whole new world. The American two party system doesn't seem so hot right now. The coalition governments in Europe don't seem to get things done either. We are always kicking the can down the road. Every politician rolls back their rhetoric after the election. Trump is still an insider. He has the bucks and the connections.

Democracy is bullshit all of it. the women always vote for the wrong guy, something they are famous for doing in their personal life. Why else would these idiots let them vote. The joke goes if Mexicans voted for Conservatives like RINOs claim, that Obama would be building minefields and setting up machine gun nests at the border with the media behind him 100%.
Why should you play a game that's rigged? Whether you use a referendum or support a candidate you like, they always cheat. Gay Marriage that absurd claim of love in the bathroom by two strangers for the time it takes to soak a rectum in wasted spermazoa lost every popular vote, so they got it with sodomite judges throwing the votes of millions away and doing it himself in the most blatant conflict of interest ever.
I'm done playing games. I know what I want and intend to get. I don't care how. They don't, so lets do it their way, any way that gets it.

Anonymous WillBest December 09, 2015 6:28 PM

Well they are trying like hell to create ultranationalist. If they would have just built the fence back in 2002 and kicked out all the illegals I probably would still be okay with the million or so they let in legally. Now I want the border completely closed for a good generation or two, an end to birth right citizenship, the illegal gone, as well as any US "citizen" that has committed treason by participating in some La Raza demonstration.

So I am definitely being pushed to the right, and I have seen it in others as well. But to borrow from the John Wright post earlier, I see more and more people screaming "Deer" at the top of their lungs.

And a third point: this is happening with Le Penn, Farage, PEGIDA, Orbán, et al. Trump is not an exception that one can simply insult out of existence. It's a symptom of a change. How effective or beneficial that change will end up being is another matter.

He's doing all of this for his posterity. That's fine by me. Yes, I believe that there's going to be a real hard swing to the right. Don't care. And, yes, if he's elected, man, the left will throw everything they've got to destroy the government. No one else has stepped up to stop the invasion. No one. So, let's have at it. Fancier folk on this list seem to think Trump is a joke. VD doesn't. You have to step out into the fight with who you've got. Negotiations, right?

The time for a cyclical shifting of power is here. Trump is signalling to the leftists that the majority is not going to take it lying down. Years of socialist pc indoctrination has reached its limit and the state is now using force to control the population.

So Trump represents the line in the sand. He may not be the final line before the bullets fly, but he at least gives the progressives an opportunity to recant/repent.

Anonymous My Take #212 December 09, 2015 6:59 PM

I believe Mr. Trump is starting to ruffle a few feathers. I personally like the guy in spite of his brashness. I will relate (what I believe to be ) a true story I read years ago. Seems a certain dude was riding home one evening and approached a limo parked on the roadside. Said due got out and asked the driver if there was a problem. Turns out he had a flat. Our man proceeded to change the tire and told the driver to proceed on his way. Before he could leave, the passenger cracks his window and requests the Samaritan’s name. Several months later the dude’s bank informs him his mortgage has been paid off. Guess who was in the limo? (The next POTUS I hope.)

I've been speaking recently to a friend off mine from high school. His family came to the US as Jewish refugees from St Petersburg after the USSR broke up. So he's all "let's save the refugees" and "Trump is almost like Hitler".

So I say to him, "Sam, don't you remember high school? I remember at least 3 of our classmates who regularly wore T-shirts emblazoned with "BusHitler" and "Bush = Hitler" on a regular basis. I seem to remember you calling Bush "evil" and "a war criminal massacring Iraqis". At the time, I even agreed with you, because we were both idiot 16-year-olds who knew nothing except how our teachers talked about Bush. Are you now saying that all of that was overwrought nonsense that you now disavow? Bush was nothing like Hitler? Because Trump is nothing like Bush."

And he really didn't want to answer the question, but eventually admitted that, yes, Bush was nothing like Hitler, and everyone who said he was were being idiots. So I came back with "So how do you know that Trump is anything like Hitler, when most of the people saying he is were also saying Bush was?"

He said "because he's singling out Muslims!"

I said "Give me a reason that doesn't involve equating Muslim noncitizens, now, with German Jewish citizens, in the 30s. The Jews that Hitler was going after? They were all Europeans to the core. Most of them had lived in Germany for generations. They spoke the language. And they didn't go to marketplaces with suicide vests and blow themselves up, and they didn't go to Catholic schools with automatic rifles and shoot schoolchildren. Muslims do these things."

Blogger Matamoros December 09, 2015 7:02 PM

When you look at the field of "candidates", and the state of the country, one has to virtually be blind not to see that Trump is "God's man" for our time.

We are being given one last chance to save the country by heaven. If we don't take it, then comes the deluge. God help us then, because our enemies won't.

Doesn't matter if we like him or not, he can do the job. When a rescue chopper comes to pull you from the water, are you going to complain about the weave of the rope? We need to be onboard and pulling hard for a new future. Make America Great Again with a Great American, Trump.

End of public service announcement.

In related news, I just picked up my Catholic Newspaper. Here's the headline of the front page article.

"Faith Leaders Say Refugees From Syria, Elsewhere Require Compassion, Acceptance." The accompanying photo shows a crying Middle Eastern man with his young son. This article takes up the entire front page and continues inside.

My Diocese is in Birmingham, Alabama. But the article has a datelane from Washington D.C. Page 9 has a full-page article with the headline, "November Is Black Catholic Month."

Meanwhile, way back on part of page 11, there's a smaller article about Christians being wiped out in the Middle East. Why isn't this on page 1?

This, IMO, is part of the reason Trump is so popular. He's tapping into the frustrations of mainstream Americans who feel more and more marginalized, even by our own institutions.

You know how Godzilla was awakened from his briny slumber to wreak havoc on Japan?

Trump is what you get when you spend decades pozzing the culture of a great nation, laughing that its inhabitants will be reduced to a minority in their own country, and generally cucking the place up while wearing a huge faggy shit-eating grin.

Trump may be lying, or just playing some game. Maybe he has no intention of doing any of the things he's claiming. BUT. He is the only one even claiming he'll do approximately the right thing on immigration.

So (assuming he gets elected) he'll either do what he claims he will (or some approximation thereof) or it was all a scam and then he's still not any worse than any of the others. As far as I'm concerned I have nothing to lose, and possibly a lot to gain.

Anonymous Reader December 09, 2015 7:24 PM

Here's hoping that should Trump become your president, he'll keep his word and expel moslems out of your country. Extra ordinary circumstances require extra ordinary measures. Maybe that's what plenary powers are for.

The U.S. being the leader of the free world, might start the ball rolling for other countries.

From my limited encounter with moslems and what I heard about them, I find them unreasonably demanding and very ungrateful. Their response to their evil co-cultists' terror attacks was to worry about backlash on moslems even when the body of the victims are still warm. I hate their freaking claims of victimization.

It occurs that the coming months may be even more interesting than I thought.

I read a recent poll that suggested that 68% of those polled would vote for Trump even if he ran as an Independent. This suggests some possibilities.

If the Repug elites manage to rig the primaries in such a way as to exclude Trump, and if he tells them to screw themselves and goes Indy, that leaves the Repugs with a real problem.

They will, of course try to revive the Jeb Zombie as their first choice, but most likely they will just push the alternate Rubio. This would work in any other year, but Cruz is well above them in the polls, and the elites hate Cruz almost as much as they do Trump. So, they are screwed whatever they do.

But wait, it gets better!

If Cruz becomes the Repug nominee, and Trump goes Indy and the Lizard Queen gets the Dem nod, then in all likelihood the vote will split on the Right side and Hitlery will emerge victorious from her lair.

This probably won't be perceived as a loss by the Elites since they play both sides of the game, but it does present some problems for the Right to mull over.

As I said, very interesting times to come.

Blogger Doom December 09, 2015 9:25 PM

Actually, if the SS isn't in on it, they are about as good as it gets. Well, until this brownout that seems to have every government agency, department, program, etc. on even more of a fritz than being government already makes it. Now I'm not sure they can do anything right. I'm surprised the affirmative action Zero hasn't been run over by his protection crew, as affirmative action as they have probably become. So... Still, it's probably about as good as it gets, if it's on your side. Which, for Trump, not so much.

Google self-driving? Only if it's an electric! The one problem the left has with pulling off such a thing, diy, is... they are of the left. And they only deal with the left. The mafia, communists, and socialists (self admitted that is) all have the same problems (for obvious reasons). Still, could happen if they happen to contract out. Then again, ISIS, given an opening, and a corridor by the CIA, might be willing to try.

It always seems complicated and yet it really isn't. And it works or not.

We don't care. Hillary Diane Rodham would make an excellent villain for Civil War II. Donald John Trump is our murder weapon, not our candidate, and our target is the GOPe. The Establishment Party has what they think is a Xanatos gambit and we have ours, and ne'er the twain shall meet except o'er a battlefield, G-d forbid and knock on wood.

Trump is a lifelong liberal Democrat. Friend of the Clintons. A supporter of big, powerful, statist government, who thinks court decisions on social issues are "law of the land".

I do not buy his "conversion" for a minute.

Millions upon millions of dollars flow into the Ivy League from Islamic sources through direct attendance at these universities and incredibly generous endowments. If Trump were to succeed and be elected, this spigot of oil cash could be cut off. Elect Trump, and you hurt the Ivies hard.

Doom @46: It always seems complicated and yet it really isn't. And it works or not.

That is either one of the most vacuous comments that I have ever read, or else one of the most profound, since the proof is in the pudding. I've wondered if I could kill someone by hacking his car -- and the answer is yes, but I would have to be less lazy. It's doable but not easy, and would take research and thought.

Blogger SciVo December 10, 2015 12:00 AM

Were-Puppy @57: Yeah, I don't know who came up with that assassination insurance idea.

Are you teasing? That was me, but I borrowed it from the left. I remember in 2008 when they were super afraid that Obama would be killed and thought that Biden was a great choice, since even a psycho killer wouldn't want to put him in office.

But now, I see that it's much better to just lay out an ultimatum along the lines of "no more free Wacos."

Pretzel logic: Hitler had SS Handschar units composed of Bosnian moslems, but Trump wants to exclude non-citizen moslems, thus making him the same as Hitler.

Common characteristic of leftists: embrace secondary causation while ignoring primary motivators. Leftist pet identity groups are never responsible for crime, instead inanimate objects cause crime. Leftist issues are "complex" or "nuanced", so primary factors are immediately discarded in favor of overwrought secondary or tertiary ephemera that incidentally only they can understand.

Now for some questions..

Is the belief that nationalism always morphs into fascism simply a canard perpetrated by leftists? Furthermore, was National Socialism really fascism, or was it fascism distorted into something else? No True Fascist: Hitler, Mussolini, Franco... will the real fascist please stand up?

Blogger OneWingedShark December 10, 2015 12:19 AM

@48 "Do we really think they want to make a martyr out of Trump?"

They're rather convinced of their cleverness and ability to play the crowd... especially when you factor in how much traffic on FB/twitter is denigrating Trump (e.g. by calling him Hitler) -- plus there's the sudden deaths of people that could start [or did start] the wider-populous on discussing the legitimacy* of the powers that be: Andrew Breitbart** and Tom Clancy.***

So, they might really believe in themselves. that they can get away with it, letting the current Trump support fade back into the background --where their SJW- and media-types can ridicule anyone suspecting foul-play-- and continue on with business as usual.

* -- The reason that I don't include Alex Jones is because he's easily dismissed as a nutjob, and Rush Limbaugh is an entertainer who (despite his rhetoric) is willing to compromise on [self-proclaimed] principles.
** -- Breitbart was really gaining steam and accumulating a following; it's likely that the news he had would have led to more news which would show how deep corruption is in FedGov.
*** -- Clancy was apparently working on a book where the President was a foreign operative when he died.

@77...
My mistake... I left out the denouement:

If fascism requires nationalism, why did the Nazis take over most of Europe?

Let me put this into words for someone trying to work all this out.

People are here largely because we don't want to see a delayed fuse on a demographic time bomb. The explosions have to happen. There is no historical precedent for them not happening.

What's worse than bombs going off right now is living the siege mentality/ the Patty Hurst battered wife/ the beaten cowering dog life. Knowing that every day the siege continues the consequences worsen. To break out now lessens loses on all sides.

SJW's have ruled unchallenged with the iron fist of cultural destruction for maybe 40 years. Trump is an option to burn now rather than burn later. The fire will be smaller and much of the house recoverable.

Blogger Groot December 10, 2015 1:22 AM

OP: "They are methodically cutting down the very trees of respect and authority that protect them from the people."

40. Soga:
"Careful there, elites. Gravity kills with trees."

In sum, we find wisdom: Respect the trees. Amen!

This "Trump because fuck it!" attitude keeps reminding me of the quote from Animal House:

Otter: "Psychotic... but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons, but that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part!"

I'm not there yet, and I am comforted by the knowledge that the shoals in these choppy waters won't be voting.

But finally I have pegged this blog's character: Senator Blutarsky. Freaking hilarious! And Belushi's future wife: Damn!

Eric the Red @77: Is the belief that nationalism always morphs into fascism simply a canard perpetrated by leftists?

Yes. Consider the relative body counts of national socialism and international socialism; clearly, socialism is bad and internationalism is worse. So a national capitalist like Trump would punch Hitler in the face.

Blogger SciVo December 10, 2015 1:52 AM

Note: I can't actually quantify whether internationalism is worse than socialism. But it doesn't matter, since dialectical disagreement would just validate the larger point that national capitalism is better.

Bill Bennett is actually sounding more conservative lately. In a recent post that is being emailed around he explains the Donald's popularity and the danger he faces from both parties. He believe Trump is a game changer since neither establishment owns him. Anyway, he ends the column with the following fantasy:

Once Trump gets in and gets a look at “the cooked books” and Obama’s records, the game is over. The gig is up. The goose is cooked. Holder could wind up in prison. Jarrett could wind up in prison. Obama bundler Corzine could wind up in prison for losing $1.5 billion of customer money. Clinton could wind up in jail for deleting 32,000 emails, or for accepting bribes from foreign governments while Secretary of State, or for “misplacing” $6 billion as the head of the State Department, or for lying about Benghazi. The entire upper level management of the IRS could wind up in prison.

Obamacare will be defunded and dismantled. And Obama himself could wind up ruined, his legacy in tatters. Trump will investigate. Trump will prosecute. Trump will go after everyone involved. That’s why the dogs of hell have been unleashed on Donald Trump. Yes, it’s become open season on Donald Trump. The left and the right are determined to attack his policies, harm his businesses, and, if possible, even keep him out of the coming debates. But they can’t silence him. And they sure can’t intimidate him. The more they try, the more the public will realize that he’s the one telling the truth.

!Jeb? is a fool. There is no way that Trump is a mole to pave the way for Hillary. Trump's brand has been damaged beyond repair to the "moderates" and leftists. There is no way he can overcome that unless he or another Republican - with Trump's support - wins the election.

Anonymous szook December 10, 2015 1:43 PM

While I basically agree with the points about Trump and his positional relationship with Obama on the issues covered here, he still falls on moral grounds (pro-abort, pro-homo, pro-theft) that will prevent me from pushing to vote for him. With the Don, we are still at a point of selecting the perceived lesser evil. If I wanted evil in office I would write in Cthulu.
