Do you doubt the narrative

As I said, it's old school versus new school; it's all about the quarterbacks, or perhaps, what the quarterbacks symbolize.
For Super Bowl, Focus Is on Passing, Perhaps of a Torch

There was a sense of farewell to each conversation. Manning even used the past tense when asked what he had said, answering that he told Brady and Belichick that it had been an honor to compete against them.

It was an interlude that might have summed up an epoch of N.F.L. playoff football, a period that the 39-year-old Manning is about to leave behind.

Manning’s next game, fittingly in the 50th Super Bowl, will be contested in a new pro football era, and the proof of that will be found on the opposite sideline, where his counterpart on the Carolina Panthers will be the new-age quarterback Cam Newton.... The contrasts between the quarterbacks will be the main story line.
"Fittingly." It's all about the narrative and the predictive programming, in the end:
“I still don’t get why he has to (be criticized). And maybe there are some people out there who are concerned with who he is, which I think is terrible. I really do.You think in this time, this day and age, it would be more about who he is as an athlete, as a person more than anything else. Hopefully we can get past those things.”
"Hopefully", the Lacedaemonians said.

> it would be more about who he is as an athlete, as a person more than anything else.

What do those two have to do with each other. As an athlete, Cam is one of the more gifted people on the planet. As a person?

Blogger JCclimber January 27, 2016 7:04 PM

since I don't have a TV and don't watch football anymore, I had no idea who Cam Newton was before this week.

Because the Superbowl is going to be in my area, the local radio news is going nuts about it and it is slopping out of the normal sports updates into main news stories.

So, I heard the stats on the playoff game of the Panthers, and how Newton ran a bunch of yards himself and was so very, very athletic.

And I says to myself, I bet that quarterback is black. Only based on a couple stats from one game, AND a post by Vox some time ago about the new quarterback model.

Sure enough, 3 minutes ago when I looked up Cam on Google.....

Anonymous BigGayKoranBurner January 27, 2016 7:07 PM

How exactly did they change the rules that let blacks function as quarterbacks at least until they get slowed down from a hit or 2? I know they threw out rules on dribbling to let them compete in basketball, and that they are trying to get the rules about false starts for running thrown out. I have not watched pro sports since I filled in for a maternity leave at a sports med clinic, so many performance enhancing drug users.

How exactly did they change the rules that let blacks function as quarterbacks at least until they get slowed down from a hit or 2?

College football went to the spread offense. The plays are much simpler and it's easier to see the field. There are few proper pocket passers anymore and most young quarterbacks struggle to go through their progressions.

That being said, Cam is the real deal. He's not Michael Vick or RG III. He's not just a physical freak, he can see the entire field and find more than two receivers. He's a little slow going through the progressions, but his size and mobility make up for that.

Anonymous Rally January 27, 2016 7:54 PM

Newton is really good. His style of play produced real results for his team. Only problem is it can't last. What are the odds Newton will lead his team to another Super Bowl when he's 38 or 39, while racking up 800 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns?

Pretty much zero. If you're a Carolina fan enjoy him while you can.

Newton and Wilson are such extreme examples as to be absurd - Newton physically being able to run and dish out as much punishment at the NFL level as he gets.(this is everything because he has never been forced to be pocket passer only)
Halfrican/Wilson is just way aware/smart, to include not getting hit directly or not taking any unnecessary ones (the pro bball always helps in overall top level mindset and awareness). Damn he makes very few Cutler decisions.
As for college level (the only one I really pay any attention to), the running afalete at QB just kills the matchup numbers vs LB's CB;s and Safetey that aren't - across the board - the absurd highest level size/speed/strength. It should still be noted how often running QBs in College still get hurt and screw up their teams season (see#4 Watson for Clemsoning last year - he too is a one off by the way).
The NFL QB success will NEVER change as a whole. Too few Black specimens like a Newton who can take the hits running and Throw as well and make the decisions well enough.
Besides, white boy Young is the Best runner passer HOF evah. (Fran woulda been RGIIIed or Theisman-ed in weeks today)
Who's laying money Newton will be HOF (besides the Racist Moon - who ironically did it with just his arm)? Let's hear the media come out and call it.
By the way, he has arguably the best OL in NFL - that doesn't mean shit tho, right Emmit and Aikman??

Blogger Nate January 27, 2016 10:11 PM

The point of this... is the Media makes up these narratives. Old vs New is a tired theme they've rehashed 1000 times. its a go to that makes them feel smart for finding context.

again... The QBs don't represent anything... and if they do... Its not black vs white.

Its flamboyant Gay verses professional and straight.

Oh he was trucking and embarrassing mucho brothas, my man. Constantly, out of Zone Read and all. man among boys physically.
Nasty JUCO guy for 1 year - think about it - THAT GUY - JUCO until SR year which obviously tells us something else to consider in the overall argument.
Saban's biggest game screw-up .. had him by 21 (was it?) in 1st playing wide open.
Should be noted that Coach won NC due to Newton and actually fired within 2 years. Yeah.
But CF is so different, gotta escape one or two - well except FlState 3 years ago with current NFL Rookie of Year cough cough cough Black Pocket Passer No Less cough cough (with those suck ass receivers and all the drops even), but whose keeping score on CF margin of Victory records and NattyChamps and such?

BTW lets look at #2 draft pick runner spread system guy from last year (who gained a miraculous 30 lBS of muscle immediately - amazing!) vs current NFL ROY QB #1: up to the minute results are in, @VD.
Always be pocket passers with rare exceptions.

So all the plays that got made illegal are ones too complicated for blacks.

Anonymous GreyS January 27, 2016 11:36 PM

He was pretty raw as a passer but often surprisingly accurate despite that rawness. Physically he was incredible and he was in a system where he wasn't asked to do much pass defense reading. I never thought he'd make it because he probably never in his life had to run progressions-- and then to go into the NFL!? I give him a ton of credit because he is pretty good at it now. David Shula deserves a ton of credit for getting him to this point. Plus the coaches know what to do with him, gameplan-wise.

Anyone who thinks this is a thicker Vince Young isn't paying attention. This guy is pretty stinking good. He reads and he doesn't panic and pull it down.

No conspiracy needed. Carolina is just plain better. Denver's defense is very good-- love watching them- but you gotta score to win, and I don't see Denver scoring much whatsoever. Manning will probably get four of those wobbly ducks picked off.

Wade Phillips will come up with a defensive scheme to contain Newton. Kubiak will call an ultra conservative offensive game. Manning will lead a late drive and McManus will win it with a 51 yd field goal. Broncos 20-17. Manning rides off into sunset.

Blogger Mark Butterworth January 28, 2016 12:57 AM

Two words: Steve McNair.

McNair was very good until he wasn't which took a little longer than for most black quarterbacks.

I believe the same will be true of Newton. His running against a good defense isn't very impressive now. He's tall enough to see the field and reasonably accurate, but as VD said, slow on his progressions, and not that hard to sack in the pocket from what I saw in his last two games.

If Denver does to him what it did to Brady, the game will be closer than it should because Manning hasn't got an arm anymore and they sure couldn't run the ball against the Pats.

But here in Cal, I'm hoping Chip Kelly won't become enamored with Kaepernick and put us through a few more years of "rebuilding".

Blogger tublecane January 28, 2016 2:25 AM

If this is a new era, and it isn't, it's because of officiating changes resulting from fear of concussions. The quarterback position will always be dominated by pocket passers, for the simple reason that defenses will continue to be large and will get ever faster. There's no magic formula to overcome the position's inherent vulnerability, nor to mitigate the advantage of passing. You can only run so often for so long, and it's easier to pass far in the pocket. Case closed.

Anonymous Unknown January 28, 2016 5:42 AM

Back in the day, if I had celebrated a touchdown by kissing myself, choreographed dancing, and tearing down an opposing team's banner, I would have been sent to the showers. Today it's hailed as "effervescent".

Blogger Hostem Populi January 28, 2016 5:44 AM

The first good look I ever got of Cam Newton was in the SEC Championship against South Carolina in 2010, where he was a monster. His physical ability to play the position was obvious, the only question was did he have the mental aptitude?

His wonderlic was 21, so he had the mininum IQ for it, so that just left did he have the morale to put in the hard work to actually study the game and break down film? I have no idea about the latter, since neither I nor anyone else commenting here has access to Cam Newton's study habits. What I do know is that he had a surprisingly successful rookie season, a sophomore slump were he reverted to pouting, and from there he's been on the rise. The lingering question is whether he's become a student of the game to the point that he'll be able to continue his level of production once his physical gifts start to deteriorate. We'll know in five years.

As for Cam being a "fake" and all of that? How the hell would anyone know? He's a Rorschach test, people see what they want to see, much like any other professional athlete.

Folks from the Knoxville portion of Tennessee see Peyton Manning as a saint to this day, others not so much. I'd take the assessment of a Bama fan on an Auburn player with a grain, or box, of salt.

It should be noted that the Panthers themselves, ever since the Rae Carruth affair, have under directive of Jerry Richardson, not tolerated any nonsense. Greg Hardy was gone after his drama, no ifs, ands, or buts.

Anonymous Baseball Savant January 28, 2016 7:15 AM

Nate, if you see this what do you think about Dak Prescott? Admittedly I follow the college game more than the NFL and one of the more interesting things I've seen about the draft this year is the narrative of Prescott. Before the season began all we heard about was Cook, Hackenberg & Cardale Jones. Cook did nothing this year for Michigan St. that was outstanding. Hackenberg struggled yet again in Frankli' system & Jones turned out to be a complete fraud.

The narrative changed to Paxton Lynch, Carson Wentz & Jared Goff with Cook & Hackenberg still hanging around, but over the last week or so, Prescott has moved up draft boards with this whole "Hey, Prescott reminds me a ton fo Steve McNair!" and I've seen some scouts have him as the #2 QB in the draft!

I like what Prescott did at MS State and they were certainly better because of him, but a legit franchise QB in the NFL???? I NEVER SAW THAT!

What do you think?

Blogger Nate January 28, 2016 7:42 AM

"I like what Prescott did at MS State and they were certainly better because of him, but a legit franchise QB in the NFL???? I NEVER SAW THAT! "

I don't think so. I really don't. He did some great stuff at State but the difficiencies are starting to show up already. For example last night a scout tweeted from the senior bowl practice that Jake Coker was the best NFL QB prospect on the South's team and "it isn't particularly close".

Dak gets drafted. But he'll be a project. There are a few guys though that will really get a lot of attention. I expect it to be QB heavy again at the top of the draft. And I really hope it is.. because that means the Titans were able to trade down.

@28 "The college game is killing the nfl qb."
Yup. I've been saying this for the past five years.

Regardless, it's like this with any big game, but people focus waaay too much on QBs. Football is the ultimate team sport and you need a complete team to win a championship. Cam Newton is gifted with the most badass offensive line in the league, which makes every player on the offense "artificially" better. He'd have racked up half the stats and be on injured reserve otherwise (see RG III). The Panthers have very good (but not elite) skill players and an excellent defense.

They'll win the Super Bowl, but not because of Cam Newton. However, pusher of The Narrative gotta push.

Coker was the most underrated QB in the nation this year. I loved seeing some pundits talk about how if teams were able to stop Henry they'd be Bama because Coker didn't have a ton of experience behind center. That was ridiculous. That guy was a beast.

Sorry I meant banned, but news says things like "The Patriots were accused of using illegal plays during their 35-31 victory over the Baltimore Ravens". I didn't think the FBI would be setting up a roadblock to sniper a quarterback for being smart.

Wasn't that issue involving Cam's dad just wanting to get money back spent on roids?

@44-"people focus waaay too much on QBs"

True, but for a reason. Much like pitchers in baseball, it'sthe only position involved in every single play in a certain phase of the game. But there are two other phases, and plenty of aspects of the offense over which quarterbacks have less than full control, e.g. pass protection, running, etc. Even passing isn't fully under their control. Aaron Rodgers lost his division to the inferior Teddy Bridgewater partly because of a plague of butterfingers among his receivers.

Then there's coaching.

Actually that is exactly it.

Saban has a very has, or more accurately had, a very rigid idea about what QB leadership looked like. Coker didn't fit his mold so he was largely unable to see what he had.

It wasn't until got on the field against Ol Miss and was just going off.. fighting like hell that Saban finally realized Jake is a true beast of a competitor.

Coker had never had that chance to prove it before. Its like Saban thought COker would fold if he got punched.. but rather than folding... Coker turned into a monster.

Saban finally realized Jake is a true beast of a competitor.
