UK debates Trump ban

And even Piers Morgan, who is far from the brightest bulb in Albion, is appalled at the stupidity on display in the UK:
Why I’m so embarrassed today for Britain. The same parliament that hasn’t banned a single UK citizen from returning after fighting for ISIS is seriously debating banning Trump from its shores

As I write this column, members of the UK Parliament are debating whether or not to ban Donald Trump from entering Britain. They’ve allocated three hours of time to do this.

Time that could have been spent debating terrorism, famine, nuclear weapons, the Middle East refugee crisis or the Syrian War.

But no, instead British law-makers have concluded their own time is best served seriously considering a proposal to ban a man who may end up being the next President of the United States.

The reason they’re doing it is, of course, is because Trump recently called for a temporary ban on all Muslims entering the U.S. in the wake of an horrific mass shooting by two Islamic terrorists. Like many, I didn’t agree with what Trump said and indeed, I wrote him an open letter at the time saying it was ‘dangerously wrong and bigoted’.

But to ban a foreign politician for expressing an opinion is utterly absurd. Particularly a foreign politician who stands an increasingly good chance of becoming leader of the world’s biggest superpower and Britain’s supposedly closest, most powerful ally.

Can you imagine a situation where President Trump, if he is elected, is actually banned? It would make Britain the laughing stock of the world, and confirm to Americans that we’re just as pathetically petty and small pond in our thinking as you’ve always suspected.
What they should do is put it to a referendum. Let the people of Britain - the actual British people, not the millions of invaders - decide if they would rather ban a) Donald Trump or b) Muslims from the UK. I suspect the Donald might not do so poorly.

But regardless, it would be hilarious if Parliament banned Trump prior to his winning the Republican nomination, and then the election. Nothing would make it more obvious that the rest of the world no longer gives a damn about what is now nothing more than a powerless, petty province of the EU.

If the UK wants to matter again, it has to get out of the EU. #Brexit.

Can you imagine what Trump's response as President to this would be? He'd probably demand the neutering of the Royal Family.

As an Englishman, I'm a bit embarrassed about it myself. It's worth noting that the debate has no binding power and, indeed, isn't taking place in the main chamber of the House of Commons but instead is taking place in Westminster Hall. It's been staged in response to an online petition which 500,000 people signed (there are a lot of stupid people in the British Isles). But, yeah, Morgan is right. (And I really don't say that very often.)

Anonymous That Would Be Telling January 18, 2016 4:12 PM

The U.K.'s only current means of delivering nuclear weapons is through Trident II missiles they purchase from the US. It would be a real shame if a President Trump cut off the spare parts and so on required to keep them operational.

Anonymous Leonidas January 18, 2016 4:27 PM

The various states in the USA should follow suit and ban the president, both the current one and all future ones.

The symbolism of arguing that Trump is just too powerful and too dangerous to step foot in the UK is amazing. You couldn't even pay for this kind of ego boost.

Blogger slarrow January 18, 2016 4:44 PM

You know, it's episodes like this that led me to a startling conclusion the other day.

Donald Trump is the Mule.

If you recall Asimov's Foundation series (and I'm working off memories of long ago aided by Wikipedia), he envisioned a world in which chaos was coming, and the only way to shorten the chaos was rule by the elite. Though "psychohistory" (basically scientific prophecy), a group of technologically savvy people were designed to rise to power, guided at intervals by their high priest of psychohistory, Hari Seldon. But then someone arises who confounds them, gaining power through his power to sense and manipulate the emotions of others. There's a scene where the current gang is confidently awaiting Seldon's latest pronouncement to figure out how to defeat the Mule and are absolutely stunned when their prophet doesn't mention him at all but expects the threat to be entirely different.

That's Donald Trump. An entire professional class has built a world that they expect will continue to flow smoothly toward a particular vision with them in charge, and this upstart keeps bypassing all their regular schemes and finding allies in people they'd prefer to rule than to listen to. They just keep flailing, trying to defeat him with the same old tools (like the shaming attempt in this post), and they can't understand why it isn't working.

Anonymous Soga January 18, 2016 4:44 PM

Oh, to build a time machine and go back to the colonial era, telling the British that their great-great-great grandchildren will rule only the island of England, and that they'd spend most of their free time debating about banning people who disagreed with the ruling elite's insistence that English-descending countries imported Muslims by the masses.

Can you imagine the reaction?

@6 Jeremy
Looking at it another way, it's only 0.8% of the British population. It could very easily be all SJWs.

Sometimes, it's more useful to look at who doesn't object to leftie-triggering speech than who does.

Anonymous Fran January 18, 2016 4:50 PM

They've done the same to Michael Savage. He is still banned from Britain. All he ever did was give an opinion.

Blogger Rantor January 18, 2016 4:51 PM

and it needs to read about the future of littoral warfare and figure out that two aircraft carriers with short range F-35s may not be the best thing ever... especially since one is to be delivered and immediately mothballed.

Anonymous Jeremy January 18, 2016 4:58 PM

@14 cincinnatus

That's very true. During the debate, one of the MPs pointed out that 24% of the UK populace agree with Trump's statement on Muslims and that rises to 35% in the north of the country (where former mill towns like Bradford suffer from quite dramatic levels of Muslim ghetto-isation). The vast majority of the UK really don't *get* America, though (its culture or its politics); their image of the country is filtered almost exclusively through the BBC and Hollywood. It's hugely distorted.

Anonymous Jerome Horowitz January 18, 2016 5:00 PM

The only way to top this hilarity, is if Trump becomes President, he makes Savage Ambassador to England.

Anonymous Susan January 18, 2016 5:10 PM

The MP flogging this is a very politically connected muslim woman named Tulip Siddiq. She has relatives who have been in high office in both Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Blogger Dave January 18, 2016 5:23 PM

Why couldn't they start with banning the NFL in Britain? Then they could work their way through some bands, maybe some actors, then take a look at the pols.

Blogger Jon M January 18, 2016 5:29 PM

Oh wait, rabbit thinking. They really do think that way. Be interesting to see how eager the Amercan wolf is to continue to ally Airwarren One if they insist on insulting us like that after the Trumpacolypse.

Anonymous Mike January 18, 2016 5:33 PM

Just more Leftists being crazy Leftists... Better to pretend and sign things than really look at the World around you and try to improve something. Also, dumb politicians doing things for attention is the standard M.O. and not a reflection upon the whole people... Or often even those whom voted for them.

Why do you think Trump is doing so well? People are fucking pissed... Remember when the Tea Party was to change things? Or the last Most-Important-Election... gotta get those Repubs in to stop Obama! Oh wait... Nevermind!

Anonymous Ad Victoriam January 18, 2016 5:36 PM

I don't see it as a real shame, but a prudent first step. We can't let the British and French nuclear arsenals fall into Islamofascist hands. I hope we have informal agreements with those who safeguard those arsenals for extraction to the US (weapons and people).

Anonymous Steve January 18, 2016 5:46 PM

Trump is not going to be banned from Britain.

It's just typical lefty displacement wankery. Like when they have one of their gay little protests against non-existent "Tory cuts".

The children scream, shout, wave their faggy little placards, and then go home. And not one single fuck outside Twatter or the BBC/Guardian is given.

Similar stuff went on 10 years ago when the British Left caught Bush Derangement Syndrome.

If President Trump decides to nuke London though, I will write a sternly worded letter of complaint to my MP.

It'd be a shame if he couldn't even go play a round on his own UK tax-paying golf course:

"Greetings from Donald J. Trump

I am both proud and excited to share with you Trump International Golf Links, in The Home of Golf, Scotland.

I had been actively looking for links land in Europe for the past few years, and of course my preference was Scotland over any other country because I am half Scottish. My Mother, Mary MacLeod was from Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. She grew up in a simple croft until she landed in Manhattan at the age of 20 and her first language was Gaelic.

When I saw this piece of land I was overwhelmed by the imposing dunes and rugged Aberdeenshire coastline. I knew that this was the perfect site for Trump International, Scotland. I have never seen such an unspoiled and dramatic sea side landscape and the location makes it perfect for our development. Our site is close to two of the world’s most famous courses and is just 25 minutes by car from Aberdeen Airport and 15 minutes from the City Centre.

With the championship links and MacLeod House & Lodge boutique hotel fully established, the golf experience in Scotland has been elevated to new levels of excellence.

We don't have Nuclear Weapons; we have a Nuclear Deterrent, which by my guess means its all made up. Personally I'd like to expel the 500,000 who signed that Petition.

It's not even as if they are going to get a vote next October nor as if it could in any way affect them or the long-suffering natives of Britain.

Piers Morgan appears to be undergoing a transformation. I mean the good kind. This is at least the second time in recent weeks that he's called out liberals. The first was when he called out Ellen Degeneres for sexism

If Piers had ever watched the Ellen show, he wouldn't have been surprised at the lengths Ellen will go to demean men. For example, she always makes her male assistant wear short shorts on the show.

I'd love to see Milo take on Ellen.

Piers Morgan appears to be undergoing a transformation.

He's always been a knob. But he's a self-aware knob, and much of his dickish persona is just a way to get attention and boost his career. No point in being bland when your only skill is being a media figure.

Trump had him on the Celebrity Apprentice a few years back, and it's interesting that The Donald seems to inspire a lot of personal loyalty in the people he comes into contact with.

Probably the same as telling Ben Franklin that US govt workers paid $20+/hr would be feeling the breasts of women travelers looking for explosives, while the agency in charge of protecting trees has to be told not to defecate in hallways.

Emma Watson to put her money where her mouth is regarding feminism and refugees.

She could even sell the video, the reason feminists didn't like the Managulf girl who claimed she was raped after blowing 24 guys on video in a slut off bar contest was all the guys were white.
