Week 18

NFC North showdown. I have to say, I like our chances in the rematch. I'd like them better if Joseph were playing, but considering how banged up their offensive line is, I doubt Rodgers will finish this game either.

GL to your Vikings in this one.

Anonymous Ness1 January 03, 2016 1:56 PM

Its not too often you can say this so clearly, but Green Bay is not going any further with an offensive line like this.

And most of the time the average fan never even notices the offensive line!! But here they are and what a disaster.

Only one problem, if the Vikes win (quite possible) they get a home game...
Against Seattle, who are playing about as good as did the past two years at the end of the season. If they lose, they go to Washington - clearly an easier opponent.
Yes, the Cowboys do know the meaning of the word 'quit', which is exactly what they should be doing, they've got the draft to look forward to.
Next two months are going to be interesting, call it the QB carousel.
I expect Elway to sit Manning down and say ''Look, if anyone understands, it's me. It's time''

Props to the NFL, last few years wk,17 has been anticlimactic, playoffs all set, big question being 'who's resting players'?
This year many of the games matter, to both the Jets (down 16-7 against the Bills) and the Steelers (up 14-9 against the Clowns) it matters which one goes to the playoffs.

Blogger Mr.MantraMan January 03, 2016 2:43 PM

They are going to move Rogers around (what he should have done last week)so it won't quite be a sackfest as last week's human sacrifice. The D line is playing well enough so Bridgewater will have to loosen up the D so Peterson won't meet a LB one step beyond the line, don't see it happening.

Go with the Pack

Anonymous WillBest January 03, 2016 2:57 PM

Actually, when the moved division games to week 16 & 17 a few years ago it made things more interesting. This year seems the least anti-climatic of them all since only the Jets/Steelers have a meaningful chance at being in and the rest of the games are about seeding.

Blogger Nate January 03, 2016 4:10 PM

ladies and gentlemen..... the Tennessee Titans are officially on the clock.

And the first overall pick in the 2016 nfl draft is on the trading block. Start your bidding.

I hope the Vikings win. After they beat my Steelers in the Super Bowl, I fought depression for like two months. To make it worse, when playing Madden of the same season (after the SB), players using the Packers always beat me. I wanted revenge but just couldn't find it. I had to sell my Madden game to get out of my funk.

Blogger bob k. mando January 03, 2016 4:46 PM

clearly, my "Redskins rest week 17 and then sweep the playoffs" hypothesis is NOT in play.

Blogger Cinco January 03, 2016 5:01 PM

@8 If they are smart, they will sell that first round pick every time! In fact as the wannabe GM of the Chicago Bears, I will give you Cutler just for your consideration... Or you can get a good running QB, sigh.

Check out the book Scorecasting by Tobias Moskowitz and L. Jon Wertheim. Worth every penny, and makes a great gift for any sports junkie.

Beat me to it Nate ;)
But they need it, they may have their QB of the future but they obviously need a lot more help.
Just to keep their QB of the future from getting killed - see Redskins, Clowns, Bucs, ect.

Wow. 30-6 Seahawks at two minutes to halftime. Didn't see that coming.
Good game for Hawks fans. Very good game, indeed.

OpenID Jack Amok January 03, 2016 6:20 PM

Seahawks have a couple of guys playing like they want jobs next year. Michael and Coffman aren't letting the opportunity go to waste.

Wow. 30-6 Seahawks at two minutes to halftime. Didn't see that coming.

And AZ wasn't resting anybody in the first half. Seahawks just beat them up. Looks like Arians is pulling Palmer for the 2nd half though. I guess all that's left to find out now is what happens in the Packers-Vikes game and what the seeds are. I think if the Vikes win, we play them next week, otherwise we get the Skins.

That's interesting, Payton is QB for the donks.
Understandable, Osweiler is throwing picks.
Elway wants Payton to give him a reason to keep him - and who can blame him?
If I were Elway, I wouldn't want Payton to leave the way Johnny Unitas did.
He told the interim SD coach ''I will not retire, you have to cut me''. He was cut.

The Browns are going second in the draft.

Top need: QB

The big question mark here is Connor Cook. On stats alone he should be their first pick but the problem with Cook is leadership. He's the winningest QB in Michigan State's history but he's never been voted Team Captain.

The question that the Browns have to be pulling their hair out over is...WHY?

How much of an, "There is no Team in I," sort of guy is Connor Cook?

Literally millions of dollars depend on this question and it is in the end, entirely guesswork.

Cataline's Money Sez: Cook will become a Texan. The Browns will pass on him.

Blogger Cinco January 03, 2016 7:34 PM

Newsflash: Broncos trade Osweiler to The Titans for a first round pick. Elway grins, he now has Matt Cassel v2.0 on the trading block or Peyton Manning.

ZOMBIE MANNING LEADS DONKS TO PLAYOFFS

Anonymous WillBest January 03, 2016 8:07 PM

I am not convinced the Vikings are better off with a win tonight. If they lose they are @GB then @Carolina. If they win they host Seattle, and then are @Arizona.

The question for the Titans is how much San Fran is willing to give them to move from 7 to 1 in order to secure their QB.

Blogger Daniel January 03, 2016 8:10 PM

Seahawks destroyed the Vikings at Minnie. Maybe Vikings will consider giving the ball to Peterson next time...in any case who cares? Nuke the Pukes.

Blogger frenchy January 03, 2016 8:15 PM

The funny thing about the NFL is that even though the QBs there are the best the country has to offer, only about eight are really good, the second eight are pretty decent, and the latter 16 are fighting to keep their jobs.

have to trade down. have to.

Need a CB and WR in the first round... then have to address the oline in free agency and in 3rd and 4th round of the draft.. need a safety too... bad

@22 will best:

Something tells me the Niners won't seek to move up (they never have), also there doesn't seem to be a ''franchise QB'' waiting to be drafted.

OpenID sigbouncer January 03, 2016 8:56 PM

A running game is a young QBs best friend (see Bridgewater and Winston). If the Titans trade down they should be targeting Ezekiel Elliot and hoping a tackle like Jason Spriggs is there at the top of round two. If not, they stand pat at one and take Laremy Tunsil to bookend with Taylor Lewan.

Jared Goff will be the first QB off the board.

A weak class at WR compared to the last two years. Teams needing a top WR should look to the free agent market, it should be loaded.

Blogger Nate January 03, 2016 9:03 PM

@27 The titans can't afford to take a RB in the first round. Not enough value in that. henry > elliot anyway. Henry is a pass protector from hell... and that is a huge factor for a young RB.

Anonymous WillBest January 03, 2016 9:05 PM

@27 The WR FA market is going to be barren after teams sign their own FAs.

Blogger YIH January 03, 2016 9:07 PM

Nate, that's what the Titans need OL's and DL's.
If they can find a good RB in the later rounds good for them.

Blogger Nate January 03, 2016 9:48 PM

Titans DL is excellent... and their LBs are fine as well. WR and CB are the issues.

though I believe primarily the issue with the o-line is schematic. look at oher.. couldn't block for shit for the Titans.. and now he's solid starting left tackle for the best team in football.

Blogger Thomas Davidsmeier January 03, 2016 9:49 PM

My Bears just need to go back in time and draft actual football players at some point over the previous 5 years. I'm hoping their headed back in the right direction now, but we'll see. At least the Cubs will make summer and hopefully fall a lot more interesting.

Not like I actually take the time to watch the sports anymore. I've found out it is much more efficient for me to just check the scores the next day. Yet, somehow I still care about the outcomes. Sigh.

OpenID sigbouncer January 03, 2016 9:58 PM

@29

Excellent points on value and pass pro when it comes to first round backs. Elliott does have some serious body wear from workload that will scare teams off him in round one.

Love the SEC backs as a rule. But a 240+ pounder from Bama reminds me too much of recent Bama fat backs Eddie Lacy and Trent Richardson. That said, Elliot is definitely no Gurley. And a good bit of his runs are out of shotgun/spread, which can be suspect. But I still think he's worth a late first. Those three 200+ yard games during the bowl run (Wisc, Bama, Ore) in '14 earned him that much. He's money.

You'd need to see Henry to understand. There is no fat on him. and he's much closer to to 260 than 240. Henry is a workout freak bad. You wouldn't believe the videos of the shit he was doing in the offseason all on his own.

Lacy... he's a great back but he's a head case. Same with Richardson. If you take them out of a zone scheme... they simply don't know what to do.

Blogger Nate January 03, 2016 10:07 PM

Henry won't be any different. If you put him in the wrong scheme... he'll struggle.

Zimmer is the best Viking coach since Bud Grant...now let's see what kind of adjustments and game planning he makes for the Seahawks.

Glad to see at least one more outdoors winter home game for the Vikes before they head back indoors next year.

Win or lose next week, it's still a great to have a coach and the base personnel to realistically look forward to an even better season of improvement next year!

SKOL

Blogger Vincent Castrillo January 04, 2016 12:35 AM

sweet JDC. I look forward to the book. However, Clemson is the one team I am not utterly convinced Bama would destroy. Could be a decent game. Their mobile QB and somewhat healthy passing game could cause fits.

What most people don't realize since we seldom watch out of conference games consistently is that there is a "bludgeoning threshold" if you will in the SEC. Most of my wife's family is all over Big10 country so they don't get it and live for Ohio State, Michigan, etc. The point is, if you are not at x level of strength and power defensively and OL/RB you simply cannot compete. It's like when my LSU has played them the last two or three times. They simply cannot do anything and before you know it you have punted 5 straight times and your d is already tired.

If Clemson can make it to halftime having avoided this they have a chance. If it seems like they are sluggish and Bama is running easily, forget about it it's over.

In any case good luck.

The funny thing about the NFL is that even though the QBs there are the best the country has to offer, only about eight are really good, the second eight are pretty decent, and the latter 16 are fighting to keep their jobs.

It's usually the case that there's a handful of QBs who can outplay their O-line, three handfuls who rise and fall with their protection, and then a bunch of backups pressed into a starting job and aren't really any better than most of the backups in the league (including the ones on their own team).

Anonymous VFM #0189 January 04, 2016 1:45 AM

Excellent. Vikes overachieved and got the one championship they have any real shot at. Seattle should have few problems next week: even if AD ends up with 150 on the ground, the play action will never open up. Teddy has the patience but not the accuracy to scare seattle this time. If Aaron's beat up old feet gave them problems tonight, they are in big trouble with a young Wilson. Too bad though: I think teddy is close to where he needs to be for this kind of team. He just doesn't have the precision to catch even a diminished Legion out.

Besides, Vikings suck against the NFC West.

Blogger Derrick Bonsell January 04, 2016 1:55 AM

@43: One thing that I think might work in Bama's favor is that Clemson had hoped to shut down Henry to force Coker to pass. Michigan State was pretty successful at the first but the second didn't work in their favor.

Clemson certainly has a better offense and defense than Michigan State did too though.

Blogger Derrick Bonsell January 04, 2016 2:00 AM

@47: What I mean is that even if you can deny Alabama a good running game it might not be enough. The caliber of play they had in the semifinal was a whole other level over their play against Ole Miss and Tennessee. If both teams live up to expectations it will be a good game.

OpenID Jack Amok January 04, 2016 3:45 AM

Sweet HeySuuus. It's called "Offensive Line"

The best player and RB in the Country was a White RB out in Marxist Stanford. Neither Bama RB that has won the Heisman (Weisman?) recently is anything special whatsoever.
And UT still fucking sux.

Blogger Nate January 04, 2016 6:10 AM

The issue with Bama and Clemson will be the same as always. It will be the trenches.

Can Bama get to the QB with just rushing 4? And can they stay disciplined in dealing with a slippery QB? and how many guys does Clemson have to keep in the box to stop Henry?

I'll tell ya this... what you saw new ears eve from Coker was not a fluke. That's him being him. They just haven't asked him to be that guy much.

And he has weapons all around him... Stewart... Ridley...
OJ Howard...

Not guaranteeing anything. Bama has to show up and play disciplined football. But if they do... I am very skeptical that Clemson can bang with them for 60 minutes.

OpenID sigbouncer January 04, 2016 12:06 PM

I'll have to get a good look at some game tape on Henry before I do my early FF drafts. Thanks for the tip.

Blogger Vincent Castrillo January 12, 2016 1:51 AM

Ahh my analysis was on. Clemson came to play and might have actually been better talentwise. But Bama's experience and battle testedness versus the monsters in the SEC and Mile's craziness helped in spades. The D did not look like stopping Clemson consistently so he needed to be in the driver's seat. Hence he pulled a Les Miles/Sean Payton and it paid off in spades. What a game. JDC don't worry about shaving or anything silly. Just say I was correct publicly on this forum and send me that copy of your book. Maybe we can make a bet for next year as well....I'll post this elsewhere too since there was no Bama thread as of yet.
