Super Bowl L
Let's revisit what I said on Championship Weekend:
New School NFL over Old School NFL for the 50th Anniversary Super Bowl, thereby symbolically denoting the transformation of America into the New America. Predictive programming calls for Carolina.
It's Peyton's Last Ride rather than the Dynamic Duo's Last Hurrah, but the symbolic narrative remains the same. Ergo, Carolina.
This happens to be supported by the football analysis: great defense plus good offense beats great defense plus mediocre offense. Considering that Denver couldn't beat Seattle when Peyton Manning was just as wily but his arm was still good, I don't see how Denver is going to beat Carolina.
I expect a reasonably comfortable Carolina win, and because I am an old school NFC fan, I would welcome that. But regardless, this is your Super Bowl 50 thread.

1 – 200 of 401 Newer› Newest»IF Denver can pull it off (and that's a big IF) it will be their defense doing enough pestering of Newton to grab the win. I doubt if we see later that Manning has put it in the air 40+ times that it will translate to a Broncos win.
Open up with Elton john in a rainbow feather boa singing "Na na nananana na na" from Gnomeo & Juliet theme song...
Meh...I quit watching the game when they pussified it. You can't even make a good hit w/o being called for a penalty now. And tbe bastards outlawed the endzone celebrations. I so looked forward to the Icky Shuffle back in the day and seeing the other ones teams would come up with. No more.
38 - 17, Carolina over Denver. Manning throws two interceptions and cries at the end of the game. Cam and Ginn makes viewers wonder if that Bronco defense stayed up too late partying the night before.
otoh, if the Mob is in control, look for Denver to at least cover the spread if not win outright.
i haven't heard anybody say that they 'expect' Denver to win.
Vox, I agree intellectually, but emotionally I'd love to see Manning drive the length of the field and score the winning TD late in the 4th quarter.
I was asked yesterday and said much the same thing. Heart says Denver. Head says Carolina.
Carolina is a much more complete team... and while I believe the Denver pass rush is going to cause problems for the Panthers I just don't think Denver can score enough to matter.
24 - 17 Carolina.
I would love to be wrong and see Manning win it.. just to rub it in Brady-Fan's face though.
As a Bears fan I guess I should support the NFC Champs. Especially with '85 Bears Ron Rivera coaching. But I really would have liked the Patriots to win it all just to spite Roger Goodell. And spite is all I got left.
Only three comments for an OT "I hate football comment"
The only QB this season to really give Denver's D fits was Big Ben. Cam isn't Big Ben, and he isn't throwing to Antonio Brown. Wade is having a monster year as DC and he has playmakers everywhere. I don't see Carolina putting up more than 17 unless we get multiple turnover Manning.
Panther's Defense is pretty good but its prone to taking plays off and giving up big plays. Peyton has the knowledge to take advantage of that. Does he have the ability?
I think Manning loses this game. He isn't great under playoff pressure normally. Add to that his knowledge that this is his last shot, and desperation will lead to panic will lead to turnovers.
@5 Looks like the money is on Denver: http://www.breitbart.com/sports/2016/02/07/2963503/
Agree with Willbest. Penalty flag on Comment #3: Adds nothing to the thread; penalty Automatic Deletion.
Many signs point to a Carolina blow-out win. That Denver defense is really good though. If the game is remains close early, it wouldn't surprise me to see Denver pull a win out of their butt. Big if.
Lol.
This is Kubiaks and Wade Phillips first year coaching Denver so not quite the same as when the Broncos played Seattle. I'll be very interested in what Phillips has got for Cam. We saw some of it against the hated Patriots but I think Wade still has some tricks up his sleeve.
Would love to see Broncos win, but head says it's Panthers for the already stated reasons.
2016. Year of The Trump. Year of the White Man- Therefor Broncos Win.
FIVEHEAD is over the hill and done.
I predict the team that scores the most points will win, and there will be less than 100 yards of total penalties.
I too think Carolina's gonna win it. But this is a mirror-image of the Broncos team of two years ago. As most of us remember, that was an incredible offense with a rather weak defense.
The Seahawks stopped that offense cold and cruised.
This Broncos team has a rather weak offense paired with a great defense - it's what got them past the Patriots. The question is can they give the Panthers as much trouble as they did the Patriots (twice).
And that's hard to say, Brady's a pocket passer, if the pocket collapses and he can't get rid of the ball, he's screwed.
Cam Newton is a young (and yes, it matters, black) QB. Which means if things fall apart, he'll run, and he'll do some damage that way.
That's the thing the Broncos haven't really faced this year. The other problem for the Broncos is they're facing a defense about as good as theirs - with a QB that is still possibly one bad hit away from the end of his career (which of course, is over anyway) and who's on the bench? Someone even older...
Denver's best chance to win is to play Osweiler, but that won't happen.
In terms of matching up I actually think that the Carolina offense is not significantly better except at the quarterback position and ONLY because Cam can run as well as throw. Cam has virtually no consistent playmakers except for Greg Olsen and Jonathan Stewart with a good but not great OL. While D-Mo and Sanders haven't been themselves they are still very good WRs and certainly better than anyone who lines up for the Panthers. C.J. Anderson has quietly had a pretty good second half of the season and into the playoffs. Denver's OL isn't much worse than the Panthers OL and I think the Denver defense is substantially better largely because of health.
Carolina's defense has lost both Bene Beniwerke and Charles Tillman for the season and Josh Norman is very good, but he's gotten eaten up pretty good several times this season usually against taller and more athletic receivers who can win jump balls and usually in man-to-man coverage (he's a great zone corner who tackles well). Kuechly and Davis are great, but can Davis make a tackle with one of his arms broken and held together with screws. If Chris Harris Jr. takes away Ted Ginn and Aqib Talib matches up with Olsen can Cam win with his other players and not force the ball or panic under what is the best pass rushing team in the NFL. I like how Denver matches up with Carolina and think it'll be an entertaining and close game. Or maybe I'm just praying not to see Peyton blown off yet another big stage.
Oh, the game is today?
Meh...I quit watching the game when they pussified it.
Why do you think anyone here is even remotely interested in what you do, or do not, watch? If I wanted to know what people who do not watch football thought about the Super Bowl, I would have asked.
As it happens, I did not. Next time, please resist your narcissistic urge to talk about yourself.
23 - 17 Denver wins.
I like how Denver matches up with Carolina and think it'll be an entertaining and close game. Or maybe I'm just praying not to see Peyton blown off yet another big stage.
No, you don't. You're just rationalizing.
I'm with Vox. Carolina wins comfortably, but not a complete blowout. Somewhere between ten and fourteen points. The Broncos may make it a single score game late but even if that happens Carolina will control the game until the end easily.
Rooting for Peyton big time, just for him to shed that choker label and get back into the discussion for best ever.
Last year the Mane Six were rooting for the Colts in the playoffs; this year I have to figure they'd be going for the Broncos.
I like stories where old age and treachery beats youth and power so I'll go with that myself.
I'm going with Denver in this one.
The NFL narrative (Jerome Bettis, Ray Lewis) this decade says it's a Peyton win in his last game.
From an analysis standpoint. Kubiak will continue to script the plays to open the game and open the 3rd quarter offensively. This will be the key for Denver offensively along with Carolina being deficient at cornerback outside of Josh Norman. Seattle and Russell Wilson showed the way to attack their corners in the 2nd half of their playoff game with Carolina.
Denver's defense scores a touchdown in this one as well. Expect to see mistakes made by both quarterbacks. And the aged old theory stands at games end. Defense wins championships.
27-21 Broncos.
OMAHA!!
I am going to say the team whose quarterback's dad tried to recoup the cost of steroids with pay for play will win. The refs are probably instructed for a black quarterback to win the super bowl.
If you where more worried about Brady's temperature responsive balls than the 7 caught roid ragers on the other team last year my love. The Hugo award winning tale of those who don't understand Boyle's Gas Law.
The Superbowl is rarely a great game, or even good game. Maybe 1 out of 5 are competitive.
Maybe its the pressure, media, too much spotlight, but the football seems to suffer.
So I don't expect a good game. Would love to be surprised, but I won't hold my breath. Not sure I even care to watch.
As I've done since XLV, it'll be streaming.
Via CBS sports.
Not live yet, and probably US only. Don't know if they'll include the commercials and halftime show.
"The Superbowl is rarely a great game, or even good game. Maybe 1 out of 5 are competitive."
quite right. and as good as last year's was it... pattern recognitions suggests that we should see a blowout... and well lets face it.. a blow out favors Carolina. as hilarious as a total cam collapse would be... its just not likely to happen.

@5 Looks like the money is on Denver:
that article you linked asserts the exact opposite.
even the late surge of "casual bettors" are only taking Denver AND THE POINTS. and even with that, there's still more money on the Panthers.

No, you don't. You're just rationalizing.
here's some not rationalizing:
Carolina figured out how to lose to Atlanta.
Just saw an interesting stat from Tony Gonzalez on the pregame show.
#1 ranked defenses (Denver '15) in the Super Bowl have a 9-2 record.
Ironically one of the only two #1 ranked defenses that lost in the Super Bowl was Elway's Broncos to Joe Montana's 49ers in a 55-10 blowout. But Cam Newton isn't Joe Montana. As most everyone outside of Nate will attest to.
Live now. Not full screen - probably due to bandwidth issues. We'll see if they made the right choice.
This ain't Tom Brady facing the Broncos, and because of that, Carolina should win handily. Brady is great but mostly immobile, and if Denver's defense has had any trouble this year, it is contending with big, mobile quarterbacks. Big Ben and Andrew Luck lit up Denver, as did Alex Smith, whose mobility is underrated. The matchup against the Pats was taylor-made for Denver, facing a battered Patriots offensive line, an immobile Brady, a non-existent running game, and a receiving corps lacking deep speed (other than at tight end). Carolina offers a much more difficult matchup, with a power run-heavy offense and a tight end in Olsen who presents similar (albeit somewhat lesser) matchup problems as Gronk presented in the AFC championship game.
On the other side of the ball, given the blue chippers on the interior of Carolina's defensive line, Manning will not have a clean pocket and will have trouble similar to that experienced by Carson Palmer in the NFC Championship game. A diminished Peyton will not be able to consistently exploit a Panther secondary featuring Josh Norman and little else, and the relatively weak Denver offensive line will not be able to push the stout Carolina defensive line enough to hinder Luke Kuechly from cleaning up Denver's attempt at ball control.
I want the Broncos to win, I do. But give the points and take the Panthers in a blowout.
@32 thx.
Phil Simms sounds like Ross Perot.
BTW Vox, love that thread title. You had to know the NFL specifically didn't want to call it that ;)
All black Hyundai ad - but at least no coalburning
Achilles @8: As a Bears fan I guess I should support the NFC Champs.
Ditto, except Seahawks and Cowboys for me. Might as well go with the Panthers.
They're having Marlee Matlin signing the anthem. And the camera's not on her. I think I know why ;)
We got some blurriness and pixelation, you'd think they could have done better than Yahoo!
That actually looks like sign language, but then again Marlee's White...
Better hope they don't have anyone from the Hillary campaign on that coin toss.
No coin flip controversy - other than Joe Montana.
It was great seeing Young, Rice and Montana again, looking sharp gentleman. And Marcus Allen. When I was a kid, I remember going to USC games to watch him run, we got tickets because a buddy of mine was his tutor at college. Man, I'm getting old.
@27

I like stories where old age and treachery beats youth and power so I'll go with that myself.
Yah, me too, til I lost 10 bucks betting on Muhammad Ali over Larry Holmes.
Age and treachery got its head caved in like a refugee on a bus in Sicily
Manning looks razor-sharp. Good news there for Broncos fans.
Wow, look who's moving the ball
3-0 Broncos
The ''Avocados from Mexico'' ad was funny. Lots of SF tropes there.
Aaaaaand the anti-White / nigger glorification commercials are off to an early start ("he's great, he's not great").
The Panthers look nervous
The Doritos ad was funny
Love the "stupid men" commercials. Who the fucking fuck do they think is watching this? These people are so clueless.
And, yup, Newton had the jitters. He's throwing too high. He'll calm down, but notice that cool-as-ice Manning, experienced pro that he is, didn't have that issue.
Coldplay? LOL
Paypal ad was a slam on "old white men"
''It's almost time for the Pepsi SB L halftime show'' [CBS announcers]
WDF? It's the fucking 1Q!!!!
> No coin flip controversy - other than Joe Montana.
Hey, he got farther downfield than Nate thought he could.
Not a completion. very close. I say not.
I was wondering when that was going to show up.
I've seen it already. They spent $10s of millions on that POS. Someone needs fired.
Broncos will win ... because it will annoy Houston.
@61 ball was moving around while he is on the ground.
Fix is in for Denver.
Good call. He didn't have control
Ageed, incomplete. Lost control on landing. Don't know what the annoucers were seeing
Im going to go get some bourbon, a pistol, and head to a dark room now...
Von Miller what a play!
Things could get interesting if Denver banks enough points before Carolina works their nerves out.
Shit the bed!
That looked almost scripted. Close up on Cam Newton's eyes, he looks pensive and weak. And then the hit ball strip and touchdown.
And right after the highly questionable call.
UH OH! 10-0 Denver
@70 - Agreed, they look jittery, nervous, out-of-synch. They'll calm down. One thing I've learned in life is that an NFL game is UNGODLY long.
(The announcers were saying 'the ball never hit the ground while not in the guy's control, therefore he must have been controlling it even though it bounced around. The closest it got to the ground with the guy's hand under it touching the ground.)
@71 TMI, Nate :-)
How much the ball moved doesn't matter if it never touched the ground. I don't think they could establish it never touched on that roll
In 2001 Ravens won with a great defense and a mediocre offense.
Carolina not looking so good.
So far DEN def is forcing Cam to beat them with his arm. So far it's working.
Aqib Talib for Carolina MVP.
Stupid Denver penatly. These goons in the game these days. Show some class goddammit. And get off my lawn.
Bronco D-line is dominating. Has Carolina ever taken a punch in the nose? Bronco's are manhandling them.
What were the odds for these BS penalties being called?
Panthers have been down this season, but Denver's D plays at a different level from the #2-5 Ds this year.
That pass by manning looked terrible.
LUUUUKE!!
Bronco defence 7
Bronco special team 3
Panthers duck (zero)
Carolina is starting to look more comfortable.
He's running. He's a black QB
Is Newton holding the ball over-long on handoffs a thing he does since he may keep possession?
Cam is doing some crappy handoffs like he wants to keep the ball
This comment has been removed by the author.
Talib is an idiot.
Two ugly and unnecessary serious personal fouls by Denver's D. Bad move.
Ouch! That's a felony facemask
Wow, Talib really is Carolina's MVP.
Is Newton holding the ball over-long on handoffs a thing he does since he may keep possession?
Yes
Bud Light FOAD
That's Steve Tyler? OMG he's even uglier.
Is he a grandfather yet?
Amy Schumer has definitely peaked.
The knee was clearly down. It's a sack
Even with the makeup, Any Schumer still looks lumpy and geoss
Missed the Bud Light/Amy Schumer commercial. Assuming Seth Rogan was in this, too. Success! The last thing I want to see is that fat hairball, or Seth Rogan.
Gross. Even next to cuck Rogen
Thanks, Josh. I figured that was it as I can't conceive of any other context in which that is a good idea.
The Panthers D has adjusted
Less blitzing themselves into easy throws for Payton.
Denver's only hope is to win on defense, and they can't do that with these stupid penalties.
The footing IS becoming a problem, that was noticed during the regular season.
I thought that Amy Schumer chick was a fat Tonya Harding brought back from obscurity.
Carolina looking like they have shaken off the jitters of a young team in their first Super Bowl.
bad error. They assumed the fair catch.
Holy shite, I think they thought he had called a fair catch
What the hell were the special team guys thinking? That guy didn't even get close to signaling fair catch.
Yup, Carolina has definitely calmed down.
And I thought Clemson had a monopoly on special teams screwups...
Should have been flagged for interference with catch in addition to the punt return.
Chico shouldn't have wasted his second challenge on that sack. The way this game is going he is going to regret it.
The continuous calls of 'whoooo!' in the background sounds exactly like the noise my whistling teakettle in the other room makes. Got me freaking checking the kitchen every three minutes to see if I left it on the stove.
Too many penalties. Like most of American life, football has become over-lawyered.
Don't like that 4th down call. Shows that Denver thinks they are going to be in trouble later in the game.
Jourdan: And too many rules are judgment calls/referee's discretion type penalties. Holding is one of the most abused calls in the game -- it happens nearly every play. The leeway there gives wiggle room to manipulating the outcome.
13-7 Denver. I learned my lesson on SB long ago. An ad about ''if you take opioids for pain meds, you need this to take a shit regularly''?
That's awful.
NFL should lose ineligible rx penalty except when a pass is actually thrown. would only make Def be a bit smarter
Is it just me, or is it strange that Newton doesn't move after he gets the snap? He just kind of stands there looking around? Don't other quarterbacks hop around a bit just to throw people off because some motion is better than no motion?
3 serious Denver D personal fouls now. 45 yards. Fatal.
This comment has been removed by the author.
I think they compensated for that penalty...
That fumble seriously bailed out the defense after that 15 yard penalty.
I picked a lousy week to stop sniffing glue...
If a running back keeps fumbling the ball... personal fouls don't matter that much.
sure looked like a bullshit late hit call to me. Then again I am hoping denver wins.
It just looks like the DEN Def is hitting harder.
Late hit my ass.
Did Denver fix their cleats?
Nothing I hate worse on D than a "bump tackle". Either tackle or do not. The only time you bump is on the sideline.
''data suggests 9 months after the SB there is a rise in births''
The SB myth in reverse?
Nate: I agree, I thought it was a bullshit late hit call. Newton was neither down nor had he stopped moving forward, unless someone hit him after the replay.
Damn stupid INT.
Less blitzing themselves into easy throws for Payton.
Vintage Peyton
Nice run by a big guy!
There's the first turnover
Turn over and penalty fest so far.
that should have been intentional grounding
Ugh. If they ever want to let the defense actually play again, that needs to be grounding. (The penalty that is in the rulebook I guess, but I haven't seen one called in years...)
Newton got away with one with that intentional grounding.
You want to win in this league? You better build a great defense.
When rules favour offense, the defense will make a bigger difference.
But an undisciplened and error prone Superbowl so far.
Man, I TOTALLY WANT TO BUY A PRIUS NOW.
Somebody who played the Bears this year got caught grounding. But I saw at least 4 this year, including one by Cutler
I am torn. I prefer the old school style of Carolina as opposed to Kubiak's Breast/Coast offense.
By one hundred thousand miles.
Buy I also want the old guy to end on the high note. So rare to have the chance, and Newton will see another SB.
Go Jalopy Go.
Damn that was an awesome way to end the half.
Newton looks tired already
D grind with penalties and TO'S making it interesting so far. Ugly game
Sacked to end the half. I think Denver is making a statement ;)
Ware looked like a croc taking down a water buffalo on the last play. Damn.
Cam looks winded. Manning's Off may not be very good but his Def is playing angrier.
That was quite an ugly 1st half, but I think Cam is too high energy to be bogged down by a halftime deficit. I think Carolina will come out and take the 2nd half.
Denver still doesn't have an offensive touchdown; they won't win if that keeps up.
That Ware sack reminded me of the old short lived Reebok commercial where the announcer says "The load in that quarterbacks pants was brought to you by Greg Lloyd and Reebok athletic wear".
Denver D got embarrassed last time they were on this game, so they're playing angry to make up for it
god the commercials have been terrible
I'll be honest, I like Coldplay (abuse incoming) but as a SB halftime show?
NO. It should have been AC/DC. That would have been awesome.
They've always put on a good show, and this would have been a perfect SB halftime.
Set list:
Hells bells
You shook me all night long
Highway to hell
For those about to rock - with cannon
The good news is that Carolina isn't down by three or more touchdowns by now.
The bad news is that they're still down by six.
Hopefully the Denver D will start to get tired, like they did towards the end with New England and Carolina can capitalize.
Ugly game.
And I refuse to watch the halftime show.
@159 The only commercial I liked was the Jungle Book trailer.
Carolina still looks like the more talented overall team, but the broncos have a big edge in experience, they're playing much closer to their peak than the panthers, forcing to's, big special teams plays, etc. Be interesting to see how Cam and co. Respond to the challenge, they've been in cruise control mode at this point on their last two games.
commercials during Super Bowl aren't what they used to be. All the kids have already watched them on Youtube. There's no point anymore.

Janelle Monay Pepsi commercial. But she doesn't sing, so what's the point?
My halftime show is to analyze the concentration dynamics of a laboratory scale continuously stirred tank reactor.
Denver D is playing nasty. Cam looks exhausted and frustrated. So far, Carolina's best moments have been a) the interception return, and b) taking the field to Down With the Sickness.
And yet, Carolina would likely be winning if they weren't fumbling. But Miller's strip-sack was controlled and intentional. Excellent defense except for Talib's indiscipline.
WTF is this rainbow bullshit halftime show. I giant faggot orgy in the making. Settle down BGS.
Right now there are millions of people thinking, "Wow those kids are pretty good violin players!"
I like that song - but not this performance of it.
Alternate SB halftime
And yet, Carolina would likely be winning if they weren't fumbling. But Miller's strip-sack was controlled and intentional. Excellent defense except for Talib's indiscipline.
Miller's been their playoff MVP so far
Coldplay : the first time I heard them on the radio I thought U2 had a really bad day in the studio.
Even though I like coldplay, this is lame.
Wrong choice NFL, wrong choice.
Dancing flowers at a football game. At least last year had an incompetent dancing shark.
So did the NFL decide to celebrate gay marriage by hiring just gay men for the halftime show?
I guess having Gwyneth as your wife make you go down on your knees.
Who is this high yellow tranny?
"It should have been AC/DC. That would have been awesome.

Kick out the Bon Scott songs and replace them with:
Big Balls
Money Talks
And have them introduce Trump on stage.
BEY!
nfl half time shows are the most idiotic thing on tv. including Real Midget Housewife's of the Kardashians
YIH
I agree, AC/DC. Nice set list, too, but I think Thunderstruck has to be in there.
This men vs. women singing dance off is right out of a Bollywood movie.
All 100 of Beyonce's back up singers are black. LOL Where dat rainbow go?
I'm listening to "Into the Void" (Black Sabbath) in my headphones to balance out the ghey.
You know you're halftime show sucks when you have to play a greatest hits montage from the past.
Oh this is shit. If they wanted a SF SB why not Metallica?
this sucks
So they decided to remind us how crappy this halftime is by showing scenes from all the BETTER acts they had previously? The Boss, the Stones... even James Brown and U2.
Hold up.. they forgot the greatest halftime moment... Nipplegate.
I guess I have gotten old. The half time is awful. This is first game I have seen in years since I cut the cable. It steams just fine to my tv. I do like my snacks however.
Oh this is shit. If they wanted a SF SB why not Metallica?
My 60yo mother thought Metallica would have been a better choice.
Positive Dennis -- no, it's not an age thing. I'm in my early 30s and that was the worst half-time show I can remember.
I've been saying for years, they need to do a Metal halftime show.
Get Metallica and Iron Maiden up there. It'll be a show actual football fans can appreciate.
Maybe Denver will show the same balls Sean Payton did and try for an Onside.
Arctic Monkeys would be a great halftime show for my money.
On April 21 and 22, 1999, Metallica recorded two performances with the San Francisco Symphony orchestra conducted by Michael Kamen, who had previously worked with producer Rock on "Nothing Else Matters". Kamen approached Metallica in 1991 with the idea of pairing the band's music with a symphony orchestra. Kamen and his staff of over 100 composed additional orchestral material for Metallica songs. Metallica wrote two new Kamen-scored songs for the event, "No Leaf Clover" and "-Human". The audio recording and concert footage were released in 1999 as the album and concert film S&M. It entered the Billboard 200 at number two, and the Australian ARIA charts and Top Internet Albums chart at number one.[22]
This would have been an awsome opening song.
I feel sorry for Coldplay.
Is Coldplay's "Paradise" the only sing with a girl/world rhyme so far this game (including commercials)?
Metallica and Slayer for the halftime. Keep it American and stop with this British band fetish. Maybe make an exception for Maiden and ACDC
Okay this one is definitely...definitely, in the running for worst half time show of all time.
Good Blorg All Mighty it's got all everything. This is the Star Wars: The Phantom Menace of half time shows.
I fear to watch yet I cannot look away.
Lousy halftime show followed by a domestic violence PSA...
swell, NFL, way to go.
