The technocultural war

Milo explains how Facebook-Instagram-Whatsapp has joined with the governments around the world in an unholy alliance to create a global Big Brother:
It’s not just Facebook we’re talking about. They own WhatsApp and they own Instagram. And WhatsApp and Instagram are two of the companies that are winning the short messaging war–that are winning the war for Millennial attention and for Millennial users. Twitter lost that war. Twitter only really appeals to media people: people like you and people like me. We want to kind of keep in touch with our peers. And then some of our fans who are, like, really really keen might sign up for a Twitter account just to see our witty sayings or whatever clever lines we toss off on the way to the train station in the morning. But primarily, Twitter has lost that war. Snapchat, Instagram, WhatsApp–these are the networks that have billions of users. These are the networks that are getting young users, and Facebook owns two of those three.

The other thing to bear in mind is that Facebook so far has a really really bad track record when it comes to free speech. And not just a bad track record censoring different political opinions like Twitter does. Facebook’s moves are even more sinister, in a way. Facebook has teamed up with governments to censor certain political opinions that the incumbent party doesn’t like. In Germany, for instance, Facebook has teamed up with Angela Merkel to censor reasonable, respectable, mainstream concern about mass Muslim immigration–or just about mass immigration in general–and has started removing this stuff and classifying it as “hate speech.” It is effectively slandering its own users saying that their perfectly reasonable points of view constitute “hate speech” and that they’re not going to be allowed on Facebook, and Facebook has promised the German government that this stuff will be removed within 24 hours. That is outright Orwellian. That is outright terrifying.
Facebook is pure ideological evil. Don't use it. Don't support it. We will have alternatives, they are in the works and they are on the way, but they are going to take time to develop and they are going to need your support.

But we don't need to be worried. We need to be resolute. We can beat them. We will beat them at their game, even though they have the money power on their side. Because the money power is not merely creaking, it is cracking, and we are the side in harmony with truth and reality.

The pendulum always swings back. Never forget that. And the harder they work to restrain it and hold it fixed to one side, the more vicious and unstoppable the return of the pendulum will be.

Just let us know about the alternatives AS SOON as they appear.

I promise, I will spread the word about them in my quarter.

This is why they're gonna have to kill the comments section at Politico:

Next thing you know Politico writers will tell us NATO expansion or the U.S. bombing Serbia is a 'conspiracy theory' or Kremlin propaganda and may not have ever happened. Orwellian cucks.

"Stopped reading at "Trump boasted about his opposition to the Iraq war early in the debate, claiming that he warned at the time that it would destabilize the Middle East—a claim for which there is no evidence" Because there is a shit ton of evidence, both tv inteviews and books. Do some research before writing bullshit."

This is a war over hearts and minds. I admire that you are taking the fight to them; I admire that you see these battle fields and develop strategy and tactics to defeat the enemy.

I will help as I can with what I have where I am.

I don't know if I would trust Russians much more than Germans, but VK looks good for the short term.

When Instagram had just come out Cataline asked his wife a question.

Cataline: What the hell's instagram?

Lady Cataline: Twitter for illiterates.

Cataline (whistling low): That's bad news for Twitter.

If you continue to use Facebook, install Adblock Plus. It looks like it does the job with removing most of Facebook's ads. They might get something of value from data mining your usage, but they won't get anything of more direct value from ad impressions from you.

Blogger Shimshon February 14, 2016 7:10 AM

@7 I concur. I also recommend my latest discovery, Privacy Badger. Takes blocking to 11.

Blogger Shimshon February 14, 2016 7:10 AM

Oh, and use uBlock Origin.

Blogger Jürgen Becker February 14, 2016 7:11 AM

In addition to ad blockers, It's probably a good idea to add false but plausible details about yourself to hinder their data mining efforts.

I have to get back to twitter. I joined 2 months ago to enjoy Milo, Roosh and Roissy. Love them! Such comedy.

Such ownership! No worries, money isnt going to last for some of these anti freedom, questionable outfits. Ha, FB hasn't met my methods of pulling in cash.

Mil-lens dont care for FB or instrgram or even pinterest, I guess its a privacy VIOLATION and surreal absurd policies they feeeel restricted.

I guess FB can go to the middle east to recruit white weomens. Or something, dont know, Reading Vox & Assuange views re; FB is anyone needs to dump accounts.

Mil-lens believe FB is probank and pro-edufraud, surprised me.

I do not have Facebook account. Tempted to make one some years ago, because I have a sister in Europe at the moment to reach out but decided against it for I value my safety more.

That say, to make this new alternative appeal to the mass, the one you call MPAI, means easy to use, candy interface, fool proof, dumb proof, eye catching apps. But if it is only for limited community, or a niche, or some kind "libertarian manly social media", that is hard sell, and might end up the Conservative wiki way.

It will fail. That's the core problem with everything from Christian Rock to Conservapedia. "Just like X, but different" is a horrible sales pitch. It has to be better, across the board.

And in at least three cases, that is precisely what is being targeted.

Vox you are an optimist. You forget - they own the pendulum bob, the string, the pivot point, and now I think they will even take proprietorship of the gravity waves that make the pendulum swing.

Blogger Unknown February 14, 2016 7:58 AM

I sincerely hope you're right on alternatives to FB in the works.

Anonymous Be Not Afraid February 14, 2016 8:18 AM

Also remember that Facebook experimented with manipulating news feeds to influence opinions. I fully expect they'll be making more use of their experiences as we move closer to November.

There got to be a business model that makes a social networking app self-sustaining. Is it the advertising? Selling of personal information? Donations, subscriptions?

Mike I can't improve on this...

“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen.”

I dunno who's being censored on FB or why, but I've posted some pretty un-PC, offensive-to-many stuff on there - including links to posts here, opinion pieces critical of gay marriage, mass immigration, etc... and have never had a single post censored or removed. I've gone so far as to equate being approving of gay sexual practices with being approving of other deviant sexual behaviors. And I've never been suspended or banned.

Perhaps it's because FB knows I'm an attorney. Perhaps it's because I rely primarily on dialectic rather than rhetoric.

Alt-right tweets are bad but #selfshotsunday tweets are just fine.

Anonymous Ulmer Miller February 14, 2016 11:40 AM

I wonder how Instagram and Twitter are related... I follow a lot of individuals on Twitter and some of them simply because they've made funny posts or keen observations. One day, I followed an alt-right account on Twitter and I was almost instantly informed by the Instagram app that I was now being followed by some bullshit 1488 account. Paul Ramsey's probably right--these 1488 dipshits on social media are likely just a bunch of NSA shills.

Twitter suspended my account again after I got into a heated exchange with some shitlibs who were gloating over Justice Scalia's death. I'm so fucking over twitter...it's nothing but a place for shitlibs to spout their hate speech, but just let a conservative oppose them and you're immediately shut down. Their stock price can't tank fast enough for me and I hope that everyone employed there is out of a job before the end of year.

Anonymous Big Bill February 14, 2016 12:25 PM

@17:

There DOESNT have to be a "business model" to be "self sustaining". All there has to be is an eye-ball catcher that the VCs can sell to rubes in an IPO.

Once the VCs have sold out to the rubes (say 3-5 years) what they are looking for is another eyeball catching chump play they can package and sell to the NEXT bunch of rubes.

1. Write an app.
2. Collect eyeballs.
3. ????
4. Get rich!

Laugh at them and tell them that he has 28 grandkids.

They, on the other hand, are an evolutionary dead end.

They imported Guatemalan peasants to make the babies their OWN women are too disgusted to make.

Twenty-eight (28) grandchildren!

Left FB in May '11 but may be creating a business page since some clients use that worthless POS.

Anonymous Jack Amok February 14, 2016 1:23 PM

FB has two non-trivial (i.e. not cat photos and solipsistic look at me posts) uses:

1) Local advertising - how businesses in your community get the work out about what they are doing.

2) Easy group websites (e.g. the local Robotics Club, or the Megacorp Alumni Group)

Do a better job of providing those two services and we can win.

Anonymous Jack Amok February 14, 2016 1:32 PM

Vox you are an optimist. You forget - they own the pendulum bob, the string, the pivot point, and now I think they will even take proprietorship of the gravity waves that make the pendulum swing.

They don't own shit. They're leasing everything they have with short term cash obtained from yesteryear's productivity*. When they've squandered enough of the material and cultural reserves their grandparents left them, they'll find their empire foreclosed on and liquidated.

As to gravity, these are people who, while riding the pendulum up, think they've learned to fly.

* honestly, none of us own anything on this Earth other than - possibly, if we want to - our own minds. Everything we have is "leased", with our payments made in some combination of social exchange and ability to use force.

Blogger HardReturn¶ February 14, 2016 1:40 PM

There's no such thing as a perpetual juggernaut. Facebook will go the way of the others from its own internal rot, mission creep, and fluff in search of a sustainable business model. Whatever social medium comes after, if it makes the same mistakes of infection, will have similar fate. It's a signal to noise ratio problem. Some discourse scales up; too much discourse becomes jibber-jabber of cacophony. Users rationally exit when the medium's signal fades and all that remains is noise.
Milo's Max Headroom look makes a nice touch of throwback irony.

I've been stealth blocked. It was automatic, as nobody ever saw my comment, though I could, and I never would have known if I hadn't asked them.

Uhm, no. AT THE MOMENT, Facebook is the only game in town for much of what I wish to do, and I'll continue using it at least as long as there is no alternative.

So will most other people.

Catalina, I actually laughed out loud.

Jack Amok, it's the trivia -the cat pictures and solipsistic posts, that bring users into Facebook so that it's worthwhile to form groups or advertise local business.

Read "How Yahoo killed flickr and lost the internet". It's fascinating. It's probably too late, but I'd love to see Yahoo get some real management and try to make flickr the next Facebook.

That's just the equivalent of TV programming. It doesn't have to be cat pictures - it can be anything that brings people.
