11th debate, 11th hour

It's all but over for the Republican campaigns:
Republicans gather for their eleventh debate on Thursday amid growing consternation from those in the GOP establishment that Donald Trump is unstoppable.

In the hours since Trump’s Super Tuesday romp, Republicans have intensified their push to defeat him, with GOP groups digging into their bank accounts for an air assault in Florida. Top operatives are laying groundwork for primaries on March 15, perhaps the last chance to defeat the billionaire mogul. And Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz, under growing duress, are getting ready to deliver harsh attacks on the front-runner in Thursday’s primetime debate in Detroit.

The flurry of activity underscores what many concede is a central reality: The window for halting Trump may soon be closed for good.

“Trump is the presumptive nominee,” said Christian Ferry, who served as Lindsey Graham’s campaign manager. “I think anyone who cannot see that today needs to start working through the stages of grief.”
Operation Mitt was a bust today, so it should be interesting to see if an overstressed Rubiot implodes on stage. This is an open thread for live-commenting the debate, if you are so inclined.

I think the deny Trump 1237 campaign is the best the GOPe can hope for in terms of getting their guy in at VP a la Reagan. Rubio needs to immediately pull a Kasich though and try to stay above it. Because if he doesn't then when the GOPe sits down with Trump to broker a deal it is going to be with Kasich if Cruz has pissed one too many times in Trump's Cheerios.

---

I think GWB only attacked Trump out of family obligation. I don't think he has any real interest to take a stand anymore. Sort of like a Vet that doesn't want to relive the war. Perhaps I am just projecting a bias in that I want to believe he is an honorable man who was just really wrong.

Trump is 9-2 in open contests, his losses being Texas and Minnesota. Trump is 1-3 in closed contests, his lone win being in Nevada. Of the next 11 contests, only two are open. Then we get to March 15 with a bunch of winner-take-all, big-state primaries, of which Illinois, Missouri, Ohio, and North Carolina are all open. Only Florida is closed, and Trump has been leading heavily there in what polling has been done.

If the GOP establishment is able to use the closed primaries and caucuses over the next week or so to dent Trump a bit, and if the rest of the GOP rallies around a single anti-Trump candidate, there is a chance the GOP can deny Trump. But Trump has a very good chance in those March 15 open primaries. If he can win Florida, too, the winner-take-all feature and timing of these contests was designed by the GOP establishment to crown a nominee.

I've said since New Hampshire that if Trump could come out of Super Tuesday with at least two viable challengers still nipping at his heels, he'd almost certainly win the nomination. Kasich already played spoiler in Virginia, and he could easily do so again elsewhere if it comes down to a tight race between Trump and Rubio. The fact that Rubio and Cruz are still vying to be the anti-Trump candidate gives Trump what should be a relatively easy path.

But I'm not calling it for Trump just yet. The GOPe is riled enough that they will be looking for any way to oust Trump. If Kasich pulls out an upset win in his home state of Ohio, and if Rubio miraculously does the same in his home state of Florida, and if anyone can upset Trump in at least one other March 15 state, GOPe will broker whatever deals necessary to ensure that those delegates all ultimately go to the same GOPe candidate. If they can do this quickly and coalesce around a single candidate for the remaining contests, Trump could still be knocked off his perch.

The one reliable factor is that it will be the hapless GOPe trying to orchestrate all of this against Trump, which is probably the best argument that there is for why Trump will win.

Blogger Cinco March 03, 2016 7:24 PM

Yeah I did some quick math today. This whole race come down to March 15th. Trump needs to take the winner take all states in order to avoid a brokered convention. Kasich is hanging out to show his Ohio draw capability. Rubio and Cruz hang out until the math makes a brokered convention impossible.

Blogger W.LindsayWheeler March 03, 2016 7:30 PM

I would like to comment on Romney's comments.

Everybody==Please look up and see the 1968 Republican Convention where Nelson Rockefeller and Mitt Romney's father, George Romney ATTACKED Barry Goldwater as bigoted, about ending division and prejudice!

This is what it is all about==The Modern Republican Party is the party of Rockefeller Republicans which are globalists. Mitt Romney is part of this Multi-Culti Death Cult. You should listen to the tapes; MSNBC, with Chuck Todd, had excerpts of those speeches--it is the same thing that is happening now. The division of the Republican party today is the same as it was in 1968, and what Trump portrays is the grassroots nationalist/populist wing that Nelson and Romney viciously attacked in 1968. What we are witnessing has happened before--but now, we must win and Vote Trump!

Blogger Ben Cohen March 03, 2016 7:31 PM

Trump already won in exposing the Republican establishment for what it is: a bunch of globalists that despise working class white Americans and want them grounded into poverty.

It's all gravy from here and if Trump goes down he may pull a Samson and take everyone down with him.

Donald Trump "Thank you for inviting us here to reiterate our positions yet once again. I think the American people fully understand by now where each candidate stands on the various issues. Any further debates hereafter are solely to the benefit of the television networks and their corporate sponsors and advertisers.

Therefore, I have decided that I will not participate in any further debates until after I am the Presidential nominee. I will then be happy to debate Grandma Clinton whenever she wishes, in the interests of Making America Great Again."

Anonymous 11B March 03, 2016 8:29 PM

First, I am annoyed there is yet another debate giving the GOP the opportunity to attack Trump. We've had enough debates especially since all the debates are being performed by the same folks. Doing this over and over is like some guy who owes you money asking for 'double or nothing' to play another round. He'll keep asking for 'double or nothing' until he wins. At some point Trump needs to say enough of this BS.

Second, I actually have more admiration for Trump than ever because he is going to this debate. Think about the fact that Fox is running the debate, the Kelly wench is going to be featured, the audience will once again be packed with paid stooges, and the other candidates are going to play tag team. Knowing all this he is still walking into this debate.

I can't imagine how nervous most people would be. Yet Trump is so calm, cool and collected that he diverted his flight to Maine to hold a little rally before flying off to Michigan. Most guys would probably want to be close to the debate site and go through a few hours of debate prep to make sure they were on their game. Not Trump. He is so confident that he is willing to divert halfway across the US only hours before showtime before coming back to the debate. That takes stones.

Today I figured there was 35% chance that Romney was going to endorse Rubio. There was a 10% chance he would give the nod to Kaisch. A 5% chance he would Swallow the Dog and give a fierce jerk of the chin to Cruz and then storm out the room in disgust. I also knew there was 50% chance that he would do exactly what he did.

How the hell do you have a political class that is so out of touch, it is actually frightened of it's own base?

Kentucky switched to a caucus this year instead of the usual closed primary so that Rand could run for both president and senator. It occurred to me earlier when considering the "no enemies to the left" rule that they (the left) have it easier because they occupy a roughly contiguous block of midwit IQ ranges and are therefore more easily able to integrate their own differences & play divide and rule between the low grade conservatives & the much smaller high end super intellects.

Actually, that is the current law. In practice, it works out to 60%-80% of what they would have to pay an American.
What we need is a requirement to pay DOUBLE the going rate for an American, and a 50% payroll tax surcharge.

I can't believe that people still take reality TV at face value, even after the marquee name publicly threatened the advertising stream.

The Royal Rumble has fewer fixes. Trump wins when he shows up. He wins when he leaves them in the lurch.

The only possible way Trump could actually lose a debate would be if the PissStream Media would think to design an actual open, unfixed, well moderated debate.

And that is never, ever, ever going to happen. They are SJWs. Lying, doubling down, and projecting is their speciality.

And here's the exact question she asked and how she posed it. She said his previous position was on visas for highly skilled workers, and as far as I can tell he took her word for it, so that's why he said he's changing it.

In the beginning my main thing with him was illegal immigration, with hope that maybe something would also be done about legal immigration. He's still the best shot at dealing with illegal immigration.

Still, H1Bs are near and dear to me as I have seen more offices go down to those than SJW antics.

What we need is a requirement to pay DOUBLE the going rate for an American, and a 50% payroll tax surcharge.

This idea bothers me because I could see these dropping the native wages to peanuts, just so they can pretend to advertise for it, and then bring the H1B in at the same price as now. For me, the real answer is to stop them completely. Let the chips fall where they may. Until the US job participation rate is back up from 100 million or whatever it is now.
