A+ ad and the linguistic killshot

Scott Adams explains how Trump is cutting out Hillary's legs already:
On a related topic, many of you asked my opinion on Trump’s anti-Clinton ad that shows Hillary Clinton barking like a dog and Putin laughing. I give the ad an A+ for persuasion. It was funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the same time it appealed to our irrational minds just as Trump intends. Your rational mind knows that Clinton’s “barking” has nothing to do with anything. But your irrational mind sees Putin and ISIS looking powerful on the video while Clinton barks like a chihuahua.

The humor in the ad is what makes it work. Without the humor it would look like a lame comparison. And people equate a good sense of humor with high intelligence, whether or not that is true. The ad leaves us feeling that Trump is funny-smart and Clinton is ridiculous.

You know who wasn’t funny? Hitler, that’s who. Every time Trump makes us laugh he chips away at the Hitler meme that has been dogging him. So it works on a branding level too.

I also see the ad as Trump's way of assuring everyone who has, over the years, seen one Republican after another refuse to put up a real fight, especially when a woman is on the other side: "Don't worry, I got this."

An election video from Republican front runner Donald Trump has hit a sour note in Russia, with the Kremlin saying it "demonises" the country.

Yeah, okay, officially. Unofficially, Putin has to be laughing his ass off.

Blogger Alexander March 17, 2016 11:38 AM

Every man in America hears Hillary barking and has the same five letter word flash through his mind.

Yep, even the cucks and the liberals. They just silently apologize to all women and feel really bad about it, but the words still flashes.

Blogger SamuraiJack March 17, 2016 11:40 AM

Best political ad i have ever seen. In a way, he is calling her a bitch too which is hilarious

Blogger Alexander March 17, 2016 11:41 AM

@2

Note also the word choice. Opponents. If it were 'rivals', it would imply that we are competing in the same direction as ISIS, which would be bad. If it were 'enemies', it would indeed be provocative at Russia as well as alienating Trump supporters who approve of Putin's nationalism.

'Opponents' is the perfect word. It allows us to pair the two without equating them. It's a masculine word that cuts straight to the point that these are our competitors, and good or bad feels on that matter are irrelevant.

And also... There is time to bark like a dog when you're running for office.

That time is never.

Reading the comments on YouTube beneath this video was very revealing, and not in a good way.

I noticed in the comments there the Trump-haters always pause to insult America or the American voters.

Myself, I am willing to vote for Trump merely to show that I am tired of stupid ignoramuses half my age on one third my IQ and one eighth my education calling me ignorant and stupid.

I am tired of morally depraved perverts calling me immoral because I dare to have moral standards.

I am tired of filthy liars, who have not a drop of truth in them, calling a man of my perfect rectitude a liar, merely because I love this country and love the truth.

I am tired of Progressives, Liberals, Leftists and Morlocks of every breed ungrateful and ungraciously hating this nation and everyone in it calling me every filthy name their limited imaginations and unlimited fury can invent, merely because I love my nation, and they hate it and me.

Right, but completely overlooked is that now Putin and Russia are our enemies per the Trump campaign?

The ad isn't very humorous. Everyone knows that anyone can find seconds-long footage of any public official in a lame attempt to make them look stupid.

Amb Stevens' dead body being dragged through the streets of Benghazi plus Clinton's "what does it matter?" testimony, on the other hand, is more of what is needed.

Blogger Alexander March 17, 2016 11:59 AM

No, Putin and Russia became our enemies because they wouldn't let the gays talk about buttext to children.

Neocons went along with it, because USSR.

It's a tragedy.

But note that there's nothing at all attacking Russia here. The word used is 'Opponents', which is simply true but is not preloaded with hostility. It shows Putin as strong and laughing at yapping Clinton.

And the ad is funny. Putin invites you to laugh along with you. And there's non of the DOOM AND GLOOM background music that features in 99% of political attack ads.

It's great. Fantastic - just fantastic. A beautiful ad.

No one has dared to go bared knuckle after any democrat on the national scene in decades. It is about time someone did. The lack of winnowing in the democrat ranks has made them so PC, and so distant to the average non-minority voter that even rich guy Trump has more in common. This will be an interesting campaign if only to see the dirty tricks the news media plays against the repubs used against the dems. Down and dirty campaigns like we used to have are revealing and good for the country. i.e. it was only after Kerry was swiftboated that we learned what an utter weasel he was while in Vietnam and that small campaign was probably the only reason he was narrowly defeated in 2004.

We already know about Trump. Much of the US have seen him fire celebrities and others on TV. We are about to see who Hill really is. What fun.

An ad like this puts her on constant edge. She will have, in the back of her subroutine, that she can never make a gaffe like this again or it will come back to her...hilariously, at times.

The establishment would NEVER hit this hard. I love it. Keep 'em coming, Donald!

As a contrast - remember how both McCain and Romney refused to attack Obama for the low-life douche scum he is? McCain got angry with Willy Cunningham for saying "Barack Hussein Obama" and ordered repubs to be polite as Obama was a "good and decent man." Puke. That might have been the moment when my opinion of the R establishment morphed from distrust to white-hot molten loathing.

Remember that this is the world's second greatest nuclear power which also bailed us out of a disastrous war in Syria. Why antagonize them? To me, this sends a message to the Neocons that there's still some hope for them to co-op him.

Putin's criminal actions in Ukraine? I don't recall him spending $5 billion to overthrow that govt and placing a US puppet in charge.

Indeed. Master Persuaders don't have to coordinate directly, because they're so skilled at communication that they can literally say the opposite of what they mean and trust that the other will get it.

Next to "our communist friend" the Bernshevik, Big Beautiful Wall is the most likely to keep the peace with Vlad the Manly. Everyone else (including Grandma Mao) seems to think that [current year] is 1984, and sabres are for rattling.

So Trump puts out an attack ad with Russia as an opponent (not enemy), which gives the Kremlin a safe opportunity to complain about demonization -- which Rodham is more likely to actually do in the next 7.5 months.

They just prepped the battlespace, together, for us all to see Rodham as an irresponsible saber-rattler the next time she mentions Russia.

They ARE opponents. Just because we share a common enemy in the globalists who want to destroy us both, does not mean that we are not competitors. We are and will remain so (if we are not destroyed). Trump's choice of the word 'opponent' instead of 'enemy' is central to the meaning conveyed.

I'm not sure if the Russians are just not getting the meaning meant to be conveyed or if the official reaction is for political purposes I do not understand. I think they should be relieved that a President Trump has made it clear that he will treat them as opponents instead of as enemies as Obama has.

Only in this day and age would something so obvious confuse so many people.

All foreign leaders are our opponents. Calling him a tough opponent is a compliment.

And opponent != enemy. It's just a recognition of facts on the ground: that nations have competing interests and we're going to have to fight to get good deals from the Russians, because they also have a strong leader who seeks to get the best deal for his nation.

It's about competing, not making the New American Hegemony.

The reason the establishment wants to make Russia our enemies is because they are ruled by a nationalist who even worse, won't let kids be told that taking a dick up the butt is truluv.

Trump doesn't buy into that.

Blogger Arthur Isaac March 17, 2016 2:35 PM

Okay braintrust, what natural set of motivations and goals would tend to make Russia our friends? The expansion of NATO? Support for Assad? The market price of crude oil or the currency used to make that market?

I liked "friends" like you when I was a preschooler because you would sit happily by while I and my buddies played with your toys and ate your candy....

Weak, non-player doesn't even begin to describe it.

Anonymous Philalethes March 17, 2016 2:37 PM

Really, you guys who're trying to make this into something that will incense the Russians (who will then launch a few nuke missiles, I suppose) are really straining.

Vladimir Putin is a very smart man (smarter, I'd venture, than you lot) – and apparently an expert at judo, which has implications far beyond just the physical skill – and I expect he is, if not "laughing his ass off" (doesn't seem his style), getting a pretty good chuckle out of this. Of course the Russian government has to say something huffy about it – that's the game. But Putin understands it's a game. Until it's not, of course – and then he'll be ready.

I think Trump and Putin, despite being very different personalities (or maybe because), understand each other very well. Both are patriots, who want their countries to be healthy, prosperous and strong; neither is looking to start wars – unlike the AngloZionist (((neocons))) who've been running the US government for decades. (Interesting that Trump and Putin were born in opposite years in the Chinese calendar: Trump is a Fire Dog, Putin a Water Dragon.)

I look forward to America again having a leader who can meet people like Putin and Xi Jinping on their level. Bush I was maybe the last President who was actually respected by other world heavies – but mostly, I'd say, because he was evil; they didn't like him, but they knew they had to be careful with him. They'd have a hard time even keeping a straight face with Hillary – though she's dangerous too, in a different way. Trump is a businessman, who likes to compete – but not a gangster or a slimy backstabber. He is, in his large, loud, blustery way, representative of some of the best of America's character – which is, in fact, more-or-less unique. And has been missing from the scene for far too long.

Clearly it's not dangerous or confrontational when they do it.

I'm also sure that Hillary never put incriminating remarks out on an unsecured server that never got read by the Russians. She was probably just peaches and sunshine in her refferences to our friend in the Kremlin.

Also note that democracy is consumptive of truth, honor, and respect, due to the fundamental denial of the objective reality than men can only grow their civilization through their own labor. We didn't spend 5 billion to install a puppet. That's a myth. That 5 Billion was given to Ukraine over a fairly long period of time. The only people that are putting out this myth is Russian propagandists. Poroshenko isn't even close to being a puppet.

Yes, Putin is a criminal. His minions stole Crimea, and he then shipped his helpers to the Donbas.

I do doubt Putin cares about the clip. He also hardly bailed us out of a disastrous war in Syria since we were doing next to nothing there. Putin did the right thing, but he's also leaving before the job is done. I doubt he can afford to stay any longer. The sanctions put on since he invaded Ukraine are hurting quite badly. In combination with oil prices, his economy is increasingly a mess.

@52
Read what I said above. We did not engineer Maidan. Poroshenko also high tailed it to Moscow. He was then removed by the Ukrainian parliament after he abandoned his office. We had nothing to do with this.

If you want to find something we did do in Ukraine, look up the Orange Revolution.

Putting Biden's son ion the board of the Ukrainian natural gas company was foolish. I doubt he has much influence, but, at a minimum, the optics are quite bad. It doesn't seem to have bought any real influence in DC. If that was the idea, it was a waste.

@58
Putin took two bites out of Georgia as well. Yeltsin took a bite out of Moldova.

IF
violent popular overthrow of the validly elected government ( Ukraine ) is 'legal'
AND
partitioning countries on the basis of ethnic sub-groups is valid ( Yugoslavia )
THEN
the violent seizing of Crimea by the majority ethnic group ( 70% Russian ) should be supported by the UN and the US.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crimea#Demographics

the United States has repeatedly forced wars on other nations for exactly this reason. you can't very well retreat from this extra-legal 'principle' now.

holy shit, dude. yeah, the optics are kind of bad when LBJ never collects a paycheck not from the government his whole life ... and dies a millionaire.

the optics are kind of bad when Harry Reid is working to harm American citizens to benefit Chinese companies.

this was overt bribery on the part Ukraine, directly to the Vice President of the United States.

whether you analyze this to mean that Ukraine thinks that Biden might have rather more power behind the throne than you would expect from reading the Constitution
OR
whether this was simply the most direct way of paying baksheesh to Barack ( Obama's daughters not yet being of plausible age to hire ), it's clear what Ukraine did there.

as to not having "any real influence", i'd say just having bought cover for the Ukrainian ATC involvement in the MH-17 shootdown ( re-routing MH-17 north of the normal flight path over the Black Sea + directing them to descend to a minimal altitude over the exclusion zone ) is plenty.

what more did you think Ukraine was going to get in a heads up confrontation with a nuclear power?

do you WANT them to get more for their money? are you advocating for US boots on the ground?

after all the wars that Obama has started and fomented ( pretty much all of North Africa and the Near East ), the idea that you're going to be beating your chest about Russian misbehavior is absurd.

Sorry Quartermaster but Kiev or more likely some 'rogue' element of the Ukrainian military shot down MH17 in a false flag operation. That's why the evidence presented by the U.S. government is non-existent, outsourced to Bellingcat/#Bellingcrap, and why the Dutch Safety Board fanatically maintains there were no Ukrainian jets aloft that day even though as it turned out the basis for that exclusion, the Ukrainians providing their military radar data from east of Dnepropetrovsk, never actually happened. It came out in the Dutch parliamentary inquiry. Meaning the DSB lied their asses off to cover for the Ukrainians.

These are the sole serious enemies of the United States. Our inability to nuke a few pirates and kidnappers in the Middle East is due to a failure of political will, as if our inability to secure our borders and maintain our culture, language, civilization.

Humiliate the beast, and all else follows.

Donald Sutherland and Bill Murray could bark lido tke a dog an make it funny. But no woman - especially one pushing 70 - should ever do that in public.

Maybe her handlers should roll with it though. Get one of those dog trainer shock collars, and any time she drifts off into something Trump will turn into another video with Putin laughing at the end, they push the button and zap her.

Yes, she really did that back in February, here's for example CNN reporting on it.

She has no political talent whatsoever, and has for all her professional life been pulling career limiting stunts, the first significant ones on the staff of the Watergate committee, which resulted in her having to accept Bill's outstanding offer of marriage and self-exile to Arkansas.

I think another important thing about this ad (apologies if someone else already commented this) is that it's actually a bait. Trump has caught on to the fact that leftists are very easy to bait into a trap that ends up backfiring on them. For example, as Vox explained, this ad is really just a joke. It shows scenes of ISIS and Putin that have absolutely no relation to Hillary Clinton, but uses them in that context anyway, making it an obvious joke.

However, the left is going to pounce on it anyway (and has), because it 1. insults Hillary and 2. shows her barking like a dog, which as some have mentioned will be twisted by idiotic social justice advocates to mean "she's a bitch" even though she was the one doing the barking.
This only serves to help Trump because it shows, once again, how petty and vindictive the left are. Outraged articles over a stupid 15 second video poking fun at Hillary? Come on, you stiffs. That will be the reaction from the overwhelming majority of Americans, especially Republicans.

The best thing the left could possibly do is ignore the ad. But, of course they didn't, and Trump knew they couldn't possibly resist.

No need for apologies. It has been commented on, but it's an argument. Some think it's dumb, you think it's humorlessness bait, I think it's strategic and brilliant to trick the press into taking Russia's side.

The one other point I haven't seen mentioned is that it riffs against Hillary's own "It's 3 a.m. and the White House phone rings" political ad from her previous campaign.

Pick up the phone and bark like a dog? Clever juxtaposition.

Guaranteed way to make anything funny is simply to speed up the footage and ad Yakety Sax.

"And the Kremlin complains about the ad, so it gets free exposure from the media talking about how terrible Trump is for upsetting them. He beats the media every time." It's more 'please throw me into the briar patch' but from the Bear not the rabbit stuff. Putin doesn't care what Trump may call him as long as the Donbass war goes into the deep freeze and the neocons get their arses booted out of the State Department long enough for the Euros to finally do what they'd naturally do if Uncle Sam weren't breathing down their necks, and that's dump the sanctions. Which probably account for barely 10% of the damage to the Russian economy in any case because the real source of the problem is the excessive dependency on the oil price and the collapse of Moscow's EU(SSR) trade partners especially the French and Italians.

Damaging the once burgeoning German-Russian trade in technology and best practices for natural resources was a feature, not a bug of the U.S. instigated coup d'etat followed by baiting Russia to invade Ukraine via ethnic cleansing/destruction of Donbass war. Go watch the video of Stratfor's George Friedman speaking to a room full of CFR guests in Chicago -- keeping Berlin and Moscow apart is a prime directive of American foreign policy inherited from the British offshore balancing strategy of which Z. Brzezinski is the leading proponent. It was ZBig who had Hillary and McInsane parroting his mantra that Russia without Ukraine cannot be an Empire, which is nonsense because Russia was an empire already expanding into western Siberia from its beginnings when Ukraine was still ruled by the Poles and Lithuanians as well as Turkish Tatars. And what ZBig and Hildabeast forgot is that a Ukraine shorn from Russia needs the Russian market far more desperately than the Russians OR the Europeans including the Poles need cheap Ukrainian labor and goods. If Russia is the big swinging d--- of the Slavic world than Ukraine is basically the Slavic Mexico -- some of the best soil on earth, pretty women and horrible corruption that always holds it back, not the damned gringos or Moskals.

"
Jourdan is right in his analysis. The Kremlin did not find the ad funny.""

I'll believe that when I see the complaint in RT, not some Murdoch-owned outlet like Sky News.

@153

Having compared them over the years, Ukrainian women don't hold a candle to Russian women (ethnic Russian, not geographic Russian).
