Breitbart and the Armageddon Hoax

First, Mike Cernovich notes how politically widespread the anti-Trump campaign hoax was:
Consider how deep this media hoax goes.

Michelle Fields, a “conservative,” fabricated a story with Ben Terris, a “liberal.”

Jabin Botsford of the Washington Post lied about being at the event, and then hid evidence that would have exposed the hoax.

Lloyd Grove of the liberal Daily Beast made up conversations to support Fields’ story.

Ben Shapiro, a “conservative,” used these fabricated sources and false accusations to demand that a man lose his job.

And everyone in the media kept running with the story, attacking skeptical readers like us. Moreover, a journalist who asked to see a video of the hoax was fired from his job.

The media is rotten to the core. Can you believe anything you read?
And there are some speculating just how deep the rot runs. A reader writes:
Suffice it to say that in the specific context of internal controls, my alarm bells went off when Fields' non-event appeared on the front page of Breitbart, accompanied by a glamour shot and the title, "Michelle Fields, In Her Own Words," or something to that effect.  It struck me as odd - basically, my "crap detectors" started to tingle. The first question that popped into my mind was, who made the editorial decision to print this? Failure #1.

Oddly, many Breitbart reporters began to publicly and vociferously back her up.  I say "oddly" because to any honest and rational person, there were a lot of unanswered questions, and given the venue, it would be normal for people to be bumped and jostled, highly unlikely that no one saw the battery that she alleged, and that there would be no Secret Service report on it.  This public commentary, much of it personal and emotional, was unprofessional and ill-advised.  Don't they have an internal policy on this? If they do, why was it not enforced? Failure #2.

During this time, Joel Pollack, a Breitbart editor and in-house counsel, posted video as it came in, being very careful not to read too much into things. Personally, I think he did a pretty good job with this.

Breitbart suddenly suspended a reporter, Patrick Howley, who quite reasonably called for video of the incident, alleged to have occurred at an event filled with dozens of cameras and journalists. Fields and others spun this in her favor. Failure #3.

Breitbart publicist Kurt Bardella publicly and messily resigned, citing Breitbart's handling of the situation as his primary reason for doing so.  Once again, Fields and company used this to bolster her story.  Failure #4.

The very next day, internal Breitbart emails from Joel Pollack were leaked to and published on Buzzfeed. Pollack was doing exactly the right thing in those emails - telling staffers to send him information and to stop commenting on the story.  That is just basic risk mitigation 101. I have no idea what was going on behind the scenes, but I suspect that Breitbart was getting more information about Fields, et al, from other sources, and may have been contacted by legal counsel for other parties. Nevertheless, SOMEONE leaked those emails, which were then used by Fields and her supporters to give her credibility and in the process to attack Pollack and Breitbart. Failure #5.

Late Sunday night, Shapiro and Fields "resigned."  Here, I disagree with some of the comments I've seen around the internet regarding Shapiro's future prospects.  He'll be just fine, at least for as long as he can be of service to certain parties.  Shapiro wanted to leave Breitbart a couple years ago to focus on his new venture, The Daily Wire, but Breitbart allegedly bent over backwards to give him what he wanted so that he would stay with them in some capacity.  Yesterday, a blogger discovered that The Daily Wire is funded by the billionaire Wilks brothers who fund a Ted Cruz SuperPac.  It was after additional video and news about the funding behind the Daily Wire was going viral that Shapiro and Fields resigned.

This morning, you posted a Breitbart satire about Shapiro's departure, and once again it gets very interesting.  The original piece was entitled something along the lines of "Shapiro Betrays Loyal Readers," but the link itself was very odd: http://www.breitbart.com/big-journalism/2016/03/14/futures-markets-wrap-dow-continues-uncertain-climb/. What does that piece have to do with the futures markets? Nothing.  It's almost as if someone hid the piece behind a deceptive URL to get past internal editorial controls.  If you click on the link now, my suspicion is confirmed because the old story is gone, and instead you will find this statement by Joel Pollack:

"The article was written by me as part of an effort to make light of a significant company event, and was published as a result of a misunderstanding without going through the normal editorial channels. I apologize to Michelle Fields, my friend Ben Shapiro, and to everyone concerned."

Failure #6.

Something big is going on at Breitbart.  Before I read SJWAL, I would have assessed this as incompetence, a failure of training and oversight, and the need for more robust internal controls. Now, I don't. and it looks like it could be covert SJW entryism or something along those lines.  This is simply my opinion, but it looks like someone is targeting Joel Pollack, given the leaks of his emails and the latest event.  I also believe that one or more people with editorial control have been making decisions that create problems for Breitbart and diminish the site's credibility.
I'm not sure whether it shows more arrogance, stupidity, or desperation that the perpetrators of the Armageddon Hoax would try to make hay out of such an obviously weak case, but the dishonesty and the repeated doubling-down precludes any possibility of it having been a series of accidents or mistakes.

It does, however, strike me that we might need to develop the concept of a "posture cascade", similar to a preference cascade, in which the sum total of people striking knowingly false poses creates an unintended situation that takes on momentum of its own.

UPDATE: Cry us a river, little guy. No wonder conservatives always lost with "opinion leaders" like this.
Shapiro's father, the writer David Shapiro, also resigned from Breitbart on Sunday evening.

According to the younger Shapiro, his father was hired under the pseudonym to protect his safety since the younger Shapiro said he received so many death threats for his writings.

"Breitbart put this under his byline because they knew I'd have to out him," Shapiro said in an interview on Monday, adding that by linking to his profile with the California State Bar the site exposed personal information, though that information is outdated. "The fact they would use my father’s pseudonym in order to attack me just exposes how despicable they are."
Now, wasn't it Ben Shapiro who said people should be hunted down and lose their jobs for holding opinions other people didn't like? Guess what, Ben? You're fair game for everyone and anyone now.

I might put that down to knee-jerk white-knighting.

Anonymous Snick March 14, 2016 12:22 PM

What most BB haters don't get is that the Masthead staff and the owner, Robert Mercer are actually all Cruz supporters. They run the Trump stuff because it keeps them ahead in the readership numbers game.

Shapiro has always been a clueless little chickenhawk. In previous Obama induced scandals and incidents like the St. Trayvon shooting, he and John Nolte were always the first to call for patience and evidence rather than a rush to judgement.

Now with a woman who has a seriously sick obsession with being manhandled by men and seemingly liking it, Shapiro and Nolte not only jumped right into it, but called us repulsive people for bringing up the subject of her past and all the mounting video evidence that supported Corey.

Shapiro got exactly what he deserved. I, along with all his fans, are only sorry that Milo hasn't weighed in on this yet. He would be the perfect topping for this pathetic sludge sundae.

I am only sorry that the security guy didn't rip her arm off for impeding their job. That is a serious stupid.

Man, some of the Cruzers on Ace of Spades are claiming the video exonerating Trump's campaign manager is actually from a different event.

The lulz are pouring in all day long. Are we even sure Sea Island was meant to destroy Trump? Because between the riots, the attempted protestor rush, and this enduring farce, I think his sweep might be deliberate strategy of our technocratic overlords.

Its fascinating watching liberals work to catapult Rubio and Cruz. Best election cycle ever as more and more masks are being ripped away.

I knew Trump was a weapon, but I thought we had been handed a tank and am now discovering we have an atomic bomb.

Much good feels. Lets hope Chicago and Lyin' Ted's alliance with the left results in absolute majorities for Trump in Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois. Florida too, for the lulz.

Blogger Krul March 14, 2016 12:52 PM

So I was thinking about the media attack on Roosh the other day, and I identified a dynamic in dishonest media attacks that I think is present here as well. Call it the Conspiracy of Stupidity.

Here's how it works. A journalist hears a juicy rumor, something he has some motive to believe and report (it makes a person or group the journalist doesn't like look bad, for example).

Problem: research may reveal the story to be bogus, and then reporting it would be willful deception, possibly libel.

Solution: don't do your homework! As long as you don't look into the story to assess its credibility, you can repeat it and ""honestly"" say that you didn't know for a fact that it was bogus. As a side benefit, this allows the lazy correspondent to avoid the hard work of research. If you want to cover yourself, you can say "alleged", "has been accused of", "rumor has it", etc, but this isn't necessary as the articles brazenly and falsely calling Roosh a "pro-rape activist" demonstrate.

Obviously, this approach has a weakness. In order for the Conspiracy of Stupidity to work, the journalists must actively resist the acquisition of relevant, contrary knowledge. You can observe this in the video of Roosh. The reporters are actively resisting the task of reading his articles and comprehending his statements.

The one reporter mindlessly reading a list of RoK article titles exemplifies the approach. Instead of doing the obvious thing and reading the articles to understand what they say, he is intentionally closing his mind to their content so that he can rationalize, however implausibly, an accusation of misogyny against Roosh.

I bring it up now because the Fields incident takes the Conspiracy of Stupidity to its extreme. Journalists have gone to absurd lengths to rationalize taking Fields' at her word on the nanoscopic hope that doing so might hurt Trump's popularity. It's pathetic and vain, but hey, Second Law.

I'm really hoping Vox's take on Nationalists vs Ultra-Nationalists is right and Trump wins.

It would be a gift from God to have the situation we've put ourselves in solved with anything short of civil war.

I heard an African American lady on the radio ripping into the Black Lives Matter people about wasting their time protesting Trump while a few miles away, black kids were shooting and killing other black kids over the right to sell illegal drugs on street corners.

I don't want people getting shot and killed anywhere, no matter what color they are. Yet, these supposedly enlightened liberals and the like are threatening to kill people just because they disagree with them.

Doesn't surprise me that this case is weak. Why did people try to make hay out of Trayvon Martin? The very weakness of the case against Zimmerman was a point in their favor because if it had been outright murder there'd be no controversy. Same here. If the reporter had obviously been thrown to the ground, the Trump campaign would probably fire the guy--without apologizing--and there'd be almost no one nitpicking. They feed on doubt and skepticism.

"Posture cascade" is a good term. We saw it earlier with the RooshV "rapey rapist" lie-a-rama.

Adopting the correct posture as soon as possible enables the participant to virtue-signal to other in-group members. There can be a competitive aspect. Someone who adopts the correct posture earlier than most others gains in status by being "more correct".

Watching the lies fly across the SJW-pozzed landscape reminds me of the Stalin era USSR, where switching from "Comrade Ivan Ivanovich is a loyal Party member" to "Criminal Ivan Ivanovich is an agent of Trotsky and British Intelligence" as quickly as possible was a key tool for survival. Failure to denounce early and often could put you in the Gulag, or a little room in the cellar of the Lubyanka.

Of course, this posture cascade also looks a whole lot like middle school girls resorting status; OMG, did you see what Tracy was wearing this morning, it looked so tacky!

SJW's - middle school girls who want to be masters of the universe.

This looks like a stunt, played up by anti-Trump types, given a platform by Ben who hoped to use it to wound Trump and boost Cruz.

Breitbart caught wind of the ruse and moved to squelch their involvement in the dishonesty. Ben freaked out, realized he might be exposed and fired, so he quit.

Yeah, Breitbart got bought out by some billionaire a while back, that's pro-Ted Cruz, so that shouldn't come as a surprise that this shit happened or that Shapiro was their biggest anti-Trump mouthpiece.

It sucks because they do have good people on their site (either Milo or guest contributors like Robert Davi), but their credibility after this election cycle has been thoroughly perforated.

On the upshot, when Trump is POTUS and he's making it easier to sue the media, maybe they'll actually start doing their jobs for a change...or go out of business, either is acceptable at this point. Just imagine the victims of the UVA rape hoax being able to sue Rolling Stone for being slandered so maliciously without any actual investigation done into the matter?

If anything, the "media" will be out of job if that happens, since they aren't interested in reporting the news anyways, or are paid to put out propaganda, that'll effectively shut down most of them.

I think the media desperation is showing that they realize that they have a lot to lose if Trump wins the election....

I keep thinking we're trying to save the country, but what's the point when more people are in on the scam than not? Help me out here- what are we saving? What are we trying to make great again?

Vox makes this point repeatedly. We aren't "conserving" anything. After 1865, there was very little left to conserve in the U.S. Reconstruction in the South, the declaration of Corporations as people, the practical genocide of the remainder of the native american indians, then there was the slow and steady takeover of government, education, and business by progressives to the point that 90 years after 1865, the press was screaming about the "Reds" and communist takeover. The last 60 years has just been the icing on the cake. It has seen the codifying of murder in the abortion on demand laws and the steady decline of every relevant moral metric - see William Bennet's work on that.

It's not enough that we on the right have to fend off the well-organized and unified enemy progressives and liberals. We have to constantly guard against white-knighting RINO moderates who are constantly shooting at what is supposed to be their ally.

I'm sure someone has said it better, but what we are seeing in current culture is the culmination of well over 160 years of steady decline from a de-centralized and weak central government of a nation of mostly Christians, to a centralization of power in the hands of an elite few who seem to despise God and any semblance of freedom for the proletariat. What is being built would be the envy of any 20th century communist regime. Surely they would salivate over the prospect that people would not only not notice the general decline in culture, morals, and safety (who here wants to vacation in Chicago?), but would welcome their chains in complete ignorance while consuming an entirely entertainment based culture (Kardashians, MLB, Final Four, Hollywood, Survivor, the list goes on and on).

@51 No, but he will make it MUCH EASIER to do. A lot of these sites would be put out of business if they had to bear the full brunt of their poor "journalism". Right now the legal system protects them. Loosen or remove those protections and now they have to start suffering consequences for their bullshit.

It's ultimately killing two birds with one stone. First, you clamp down on activist journalism, and second, you also clamp down on them as a means of globalist propaganda.

I'm definitely for free speech, or even unpopular speech, but when the press is routinely putting out Salem witch hunt style shit that wrongfully/dishonestly damages or destroys people's livelihoods and reputations, that shit needs to stop.

Well, that would be useful if it wasn't full of a bunch of lies. Trump isn't Robespierre, and Shapiro jumped on and decided to die on the hill of a hoax. Within that context, all of the conclusions of the article are absurd.

Good to know, from the latest Breitbart resignations, that nationalism is at odds with the viewpoint of the Founding Fathers.

I get a lump in my throat knowing that, men who fought for independence and sovereignty of their own lands, who funded their new government with tariffs, who waged wars to protect American merchant vessels engaged in a positive balance of trade, are now distilled and represented by that militant remnant of "small government" globalists who think "center-right" is a label Americans can get behind and Paul Ryan's budget is just A-OK.

Trump has the right idea. We need to bolster our libel laws. One of the big reasons why we are where we are today is because we have allowed our elites and their media puppets to lie and slander and libel without consequence. That's how the propaganda has been allowed to take root and flourish to the point where our entire civilization is on the brink of total destruction.

It has to stop.

Everyone might be the wrong word. Everyone in the media, sure. Even at places we thought were safe. But the terminations have started at Breitbart and hopefully they'll keep going.

Have you ever played a variant of Werewolf/ Mafia? The whole point of the game is that the majority townsfolk are only able to lynch people with zero starting knowledge of who is actually a werewolf, but the minority werewolves can comfortably kill the townsfolk or deceive them into killing each other.

If you out yourself as a werewolf, it's a matter of time until the townsfolk get around to lynching you.

Or until the vigilante kills you in the night.

It's not just irrational - it's the impotency of the hatred that turns otherwise reasonable, moderately intelligent people into SJW-grade morons.

I think that's what really pushes guys like Walsh and Shapiro over the edge. They are used to having the mantle of conservative anger. When they moved to turn it against Trump they had it ripped from their grasp and turned against them.

The exposure of their own insignificance among those they thought they were leading pushes them into a blind rage that casts about for anything, however idiotic, to discredit and demean the guy who stole their gig.

Yeah, I took Ace to task on that on his previous "banning post" a few months back, and he didn't like it, but he couldn't ban me because I made sure to criticize him legitimately while avoiding his triggers. Keep in mind, he not only sold the GOP swill, he ridiculed people that realized the GOP was a party that needed to die. Then out of the blue, he claims he thought that way for 3 years (!) and wrote otherwise. Who takes that kind of time to lie on his own blog? It's not like he "just" came to that realization - he held it and fronted otherwise for years. Now I look at him side-ways.

There some stuff saying Breitbart is in turmoil.

Reading the excerpts, looks like it wasn't a trump vs Cruz thing as much as a "why aren't you defending our fellow colleague" thing.

Two more breitbart writers resigned today.

Breitbart is starting to look like a fully converged entity.

Blogger White Devil March 14, 2016 5:02 PM

I didn't read Mike Cernovich's Gorilla Mindset. Maybe something like that would be helpful for BluePony. I don't really understand the morale thing.

I can talk about why I think Trump is a certainty now.
I can talk about having been in do-or-die situations and how morale ceases to matter.
I can talk about "writer's block" being dumb and "I don't have a muse, I have a mortgage."

But If you're still seeing it in terms of a movie like Chinatown?
I dunno. I think you need reasons for doing things beyond politics.

Anonymous Gen. Kong March 14, 2016 5:49 PM

The Germans had a useful word for the media: Lügenpresse. Of course there's always the Orwellian classic: Ministry of Truth. The only truly proper position for any of them is at the end of a nice stretchy rope (takes longer that way, I've read). Other stories show the reporter would have liked to keep working for the paper, but not report the Trump campaign. If the men wanted to quit they didn't need her as an excuse. They could have manned-up anytime and quit.
And the paper, which backs Trump, certainly wouldn't deny the incident or roll the reporter under the bus for crass monetary reasons. Right?
Because businesses never do wrong and people never do the correct thing when struggling with conflicting evidence. Right?
Or maybe this should all come down to personal responsibility and a business that isn't all about money. But it seems clear the writing is on the wall - Breitbart is seen as catering to dollars and the staff who quit are being seen as principled. Just like any good David and Goliath story.

Blogger Mark March 15, 2016 2:25 AM

I'm kind of stunned at all of this here. The original Fields claim was relatively mild, Corey denied even meeting her, called her a liar, etc.

Now video clearly shows him grabbing and yanking her back (not just arresting her forward motion, actually pulling her backwards). Lewandowski is as much a liar as the photog is. If the cameraman is a dirtbag for lying, then so is Lewandowski.

Trump is such a pathological liar, I'm amazed anyone can take anything he claims seriously. What is amazing is how many people can look at the video proving him (or in this case Lewandowski) and tell me not to believe my lying eyes.

Blogger John M March 15, 2016 3:53 AM

@110 This incident has nothing to do with Trump, this incident is between Lewandowski and a crybaby journalist. It's whining over nothing, even if Lewandowski had yanked her back who cares?

Anonymous Dyskord March 15, 2016 7:12 AM

@110 The Fields claim was bogus. All it illustrates is a special snowflake demanding a safe space. Its a non story blown entirely out of proportion. If she were a dude we'd be saying he needs to sack up. Since its a woman were supposed to start white knighting and tipping fedoras for m'lady.
Its a nonsense story. Even if what she said happened, so what! He should lose his job.He tugged her arm, so we should grab the pitchforks. Fields is not hot enough to be that crazy.

Blogger Mark March 15, 2016 1:04 PM

@111 Welcome to Clinton country. Bill denies denies denies BJ and then when it's proven, the defense changes to "yah but who cares".

Lewandowski denied denied denied that he had touched or even met Fields, smeared as an attention whore. Now it's on video that he did yank yer back (and from what I see, yanked pretty hard).

The photog denied he was at the event, and was called out for the lie.

Why is only Lewandowski exempt from criticism for lying. Why the hypocrisy? Few words offend me more than a liar calling someone else a liar. Rubio is dead to me for that, and Trump does that daily.

@112 The Fields claim is directly proved by the video. The story said she was grabbed by Lewandowski (she was). He pulled her hard (demonstrated on video). She and the other guy said she stumbled and nearly fell (not clear on the video IMO). What part is bogus?

Lewandowski's behavior is more like the typical SJW defense: lie about the accused, smear them and double down. Why are SJW's (rightly) condemned and Lewandowski is excused?

Blogger BunE22 March 15, 2016 5:14 PM

@113

I think Corey denied touching her because she was completely forgettable. Nothing serious happened, she was just another person moved out of the way at an event.

The new video clearly shows her face during the incident and there is no look of shock, or pain. In my opinion she looks miffed that she didn't get any attention and her question was ignored.

The audio of her and Ben Terris sounded scripted, it was that phony. No one that is seriously hurt sounds like that. When you connect the dots it becomes a non-issue.

Journalism today is yellow journalism. Print any lie you want and walk it back a few days or weeks later. But by then the damage is done. No one reads the retraction on page 15. It's the same as when a lawyer in a courtroom asks a question, or makes a statement, that he knows will be objected to and sustained. The jury has heard it, you can't unring that bell.

i'm not the only one who has noticed that the video show him grasping her UPPER arm while her purported 'bruises' are on her forearm.

couple that with the fact that she makes NO exclamation, doesn't even grimace, does not cry out in any way and doesn't come close to falling down, what does that all mean?

Fields is a lying sack of shit.

Blogger Mark March 15, 2016 11:01 PM

@115 Hey dumbass, the video doesn't show where on her arm she was grabbed, only that he grabbed her.
