Honest mistake vs media libel

So, this morning I retweeted a tweet that someone sent me about the "Nazi Trump supporter"; I think it was a tweet to Louise Mensch. I didn't just retweet it because it had the fake children's book "Everyone is Hitler" as part of the image, so I cropped that off, then tweeted the picture of the woman attached to the picture of another woman who looked like the same woman.

Except that woman was a Bernie Sanders activist. Which appeared to prove what looked like a media plant was, in fact, a media plant. Quite a few people retweeted the tweet, including Donald Trump Jr., which led someone to look more closely about three hours later and observe that the two women were different and the "Nazi Trump supporter" was from a Chicago Tribune story.

It was just a simple mistake, not an intentionally dank meme, so naturally I corrected the tweet right away.
Now reports are that the "Trump Nazi" is not pro-Sanders Portia Boulger, but "Birgitt Peterson of Yorkville".
I didn't delete the tweet because a) Ms Boulger did not request that I do so, and, b) because I am in the habit of owning up to my mistakes, not trying to conceal them. If Twitter had an edit function with a strikethrough, I would have noted the error that way, just as I do on this blog.

However, the Left erupted with minor outrage, apparently unfeigned, although I suspect it was more because the tweet disrupted their absurd attempt to once more portray Donald Trump's supporters, and therefore Donald Trump himself, as a National Socialist. Probably the most notable reaction was from Ken at Popehat, apparently off his meds again, as he first insisted that I would need a lawyer, then started babbling something about something called Moon Court. I will leave it to the lawyers, and the mental health professionals, to interpret that.

They kept calling for me to correct the tweet, which I had already done, until, after finally realizing that I had, in fact, already done so, they demanded that I apologize and that I delete the tweet.

Needless to say, I did not apologize. I did, however, assure everyone that if Ms Boulger wished me to delete the tweet, I would do so. I have not, as yet, heard the lady express any such wish.

But wait, there's more! One Olivia Nuzzi, who claims to be a "reporter" at the Daily Beast, thought that this would be a wonderful time to attack Donald Trump Jr. by also claiming that I am "a white supremacist".
I reached Boulger by phone on Saturday morning, a few minutes after Donald Trump Jr. tweeted her photo with the caption, “Big surprise. However, the media will never run with this.” As the New Republic's Jeet Heer pointed out, the user who Trump Jr. got the photo from, @voxday, is a white supremacist.
Naturally, I immediately let Ms Nuzzi know that Mr. Heer's libelous, and baseless, accusation notwithstanding, I am nothing of the sort.
Supreme Dark Lord ‏@voxday
Actually, Olivia, you're lying. I'm not a white supremacist. I'm an American Indian. We just made a mistake

Supreme Dark Lord ‏@voxday
I corrected my tweet. Are you going to correct your post falsely accusing an American Indian of being a white supremacist?

Supreme Dark Lord ‏@voxday
You are calling an American Indian - and the great-grandson of a Mexican revolutionary - "a white supremacist." Retract. Now.

Olivia Nuzzi ‏@Olivianuzzi
I cite another reporters writing on you. If you dispute his story, I'm happy to add that to mine.
Her first response was to add additional information instead of correcting it.

I was not content with that:
Supreme Dark Lord ‏@voxday
Not sufficient, Olivia. Retract. And mention that I am an American Indian and the great-grandson of a Mexican revolutionary.
So she continued trying to finesse it.

Apparently I'll have to get in touch with her editor on Monday. First VFM to provide me with the contact details for Olivia Nuzzi's editor wins a free copy of On The Existence of Gods and the Castalia House ebook of his choice. First one with her email wins the latter. The rest of you keep an eye on your inbox.

This week we dine on SJW flesh!

Update: And we have 2nd Law at work:
Olivia Nuzzi ‏@Olivianuzzi
nothing to retract, sorry.

Supreme Dark Lord @voxday
(shakes head) Oh dear. See where it says "Supreme Dark Lord"? You really should have paid more attention.

Olivia Nuzzi ‏@Olivianuzzi
Portia Boulger, the woman inaccurately smeared by @DonaldJTrumpJr and others as a Nazi, just told me she needs time to decide if she'll sue.

Supreme Dark Lord @voxday
Except she wasn't smeared as a Nazi. She was mistaken for the woman whom the media smeared as a Nazi.

Supreme Dark Lord @voxday
You lied and called me "a white supremacist". Then you lied again and said @DonaldJTrumpJr smeared Portia Boulger "as a Nazi."

Your mistake was honest, but there's no honesty in these SJWs. They have no respect for their political opponents. And they have zero interest in the actual truth, whatever it may be.

To hell with them. I want to live in a world of honest men who seek truth. I want nothing to do with entitled brats who don't even have enough decency to say "accepted" when their opponents correct a mistake or offer an apology. They see an honest correction or a sincere apology as weakness, a chance to press their attack. They simply want to tear down and destroy.

Blogger roundeye March 12, 2016 5:30 PM

Corrections are not hard and only enhance the reputation of the corrector. A person is only a person and can only know so many things.

A few days ago another commenter and myself pointed out a minor mistake of historical fact in a post here. And VD changed this minor point. I was not banned. There was no appeal to authority. No one pointed out I lacked a degree in history.

It is sad I even have to bring it up as an exception to the rule in discourse today. Honesty works, journalists.

Yeah, to a normal person. But the SJW's of various flavors have sold themselves a narrative that they are always right. Always right! So a correction pops that balloon, inducing self doubt about other aspects of their personal world.

SJW's likely have no choice but to double down. Because the alternative is damaging to their Narrative. I mean this, thanks to the way their amygdala and ACC are organized it is likely too painful to contemplate a correction. They literally must double down, it's in their defective brain wiring.

See, here's how the coercive dishonest game is played.

One is called a name like 'white suprremacist', meant to be a pejorative.

You deny you are a 'white supremacist'

But in the accuser's mind a white supremacist is

a)whatever they say it is, including the things you do stand for but go unsaid by them

b)someone who insists White people have interests, the right to exist, the right to assert those interests
c)whatever you originally really meant.

And so a denial of the term, however inaccurate, serves to justify the attackers assertion and imply you recant whatever views he objects to.

So... you're NOT a white supremacist ???

Well on your knees then.

Actually, as I understand it, according to Cultural Marxist logic, ANY European person who advocates for European interests is a "white supremacist" because white privilege. Denying the term ("I'm a white nationalist/separatist, not a supremacist") does no good, because they're using Cultural Marxist logic, not real logic.

For the record, a clarification:

Trump supporter from viral photo speaks out

"...the woman in the picture, Birgitt Peterson, who was born in Germany and is a U.S. citizen says she is not a Nazi or racist. She says she was engaging in conversation with a group of people who were comparing Trump to Hitler, and she was trying to educate them about why she believes it's wrong to compare anyone to Hitler."

Watch SJW in video bending over backward to misinterpret the woman's actions and disregard her own words. The picture always seemed a little strange to me: The gesture is way overstated, just as if it was meant as the woman who did it says it was. Duh. She sounds sensible enough, and reasonable. But the SJWs are desperate to find some link between Trump and Hitler (about whom hardly any of them know anything at all except he's still the Big Bogeyman, 70 years – and three generations – after his death). The guy who was standing right next to her in the photo simply cannot hear what she says, because it doesn't fit the Narrative. Bizarre.

I accept that VD is not a white supremacist. I don't know what the right term would be though (if one even exists) - black inferiorialist? Would he be happy if media folks just referred to him as a segregationist?

Anonymous Red Comet March 13, 2016 3:08 AM

In order to monetize news, the media created the 24 hour news cycle and based it on hype, sensationalization, and (most importantly) short attention spans.

This is why never apologizing works. You basically ride it out and it's over in a day or two and no one remembers it, like a forgettable action movie.

Trump (and/or his campaign) knows this and this is why his no apologies stance works. Grovelling only keeps the mud slinging against you in the news longer and leaves the forgetful masses with an impression that you are weak. Not giving in meanwhile leaves them with the impression you are strong even after they can no longer remember why.

In a week will anyone remember that he cancelled Chicago? Does anyone remember the KKK hit piece now?

The video is included, but there again the SJW is frontlined, while the woman herself (the actual subject of the story) is presented as an afterthought, and her English is poor enough that short-attention-span types will probably not understand her.

These people are absolutely shameless.

@60

The psychiatric profession is hard at work "proving" that people who defy government authority are mentally ill and require treatment. You know, treatment with those anti-depressants that have "side effects" like depression, homicide, and suicide.

I'm not sure if any of you have pondered the ruthless cynicism of this scam, but they've conjured a government-backed monopoly whereby they can declare you insane, then forcibly "treat" you with drugs that make you insane, thus "proving" their initial diagnosis and validating the scam.

Odd. I think there must be an issue with comments this morning. A comment I made earlier here disappeared. Oh, well. I can repeat:

This attack (the one by VD, not the one on VD) is based on a false premise: One need not be white to be a white supremacist. Belief in the superiority of the white race, and advocacy of that cause is not dependent upon one's DNA.

After all, VD IS a white supremacist, which he demonstrates on a near daily basis with his words on this blog. Neither his DNA nor his ancestry changes that.

VD's defense here: "I'm not a white supremacist; I'm an American Indian" is a complete non sequitur.
