Is today the knockout blow?

As I pointed out previously, a Trump victory in two of the three large states today, Florida, Ohio, and Missouri, pretty much guarantees him the nomination... barring the RNC overturning the entire primary process:
New state polls released ahead of critical primaries on Tuesday find Donald Trump poised to deliver a knockout blow to Florida Sen. Marco Rubio in his home state, while the Republican front-runner is tied with Ohio Gov. John Kasich on his turf.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton leads Bernie Sanders by a wide margin in Florida, while her advantage over Sanders in Ohio is narrower.

According to the new polling from Quinnipiac University published Monday, Trump has a wide lead on the Republican field in Florida, where he tops Rubio 46% to 22%. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz follows in third place with 14% support, with Kasich in last at 10%.

The new results mirror CNN's poll of polls in Florida, where Trump leads Rubio at an average of 40% to 26%. Despite Rubio's public optimism, the new poll suggests Florida -- where Rubio has staked his campaign's future -- might serve as a humbling barrier for his White House bid.

On the GOP side in Ohio, the new poll shows Trump and Kasich are tied at 38% each. Cruz places third with the support of 16% of Ohio Republicans, while Rubio finishes a distant fourth at 3% -- after his campaign told supporters to back Kasich in Ohio, as part of a strategic effort to prevent Trump from padding his delegate lead there.
Meanwhile, Rubio supporters on Twitter have been going berserk all weekend talking about the very small sampling of early voters favoring Rubio. I wouldn't put any stock in that, considering the same people have been predicting electoral failure for Trump since before the primaries started.

Regardless, we'll find out soon enough.

Ross Douhat at the NYT published an op-ed calling on the RNC to change the rules in the pre-convention session to bar Trump. I heard Bill Kristol on the radio this morning suggesting the same thing. (Kristol also openly said he would prefer Hillary). I think the "Rob Trump" position is going to get a lot louder from GOPe types if he does well today and they see their last glimmers of hope fading. I would give even odds that by Friday we start seeing articles lionizing the old party elder/brokered convention system.

Ross Donut’s article is rich.

The GOP (and Dems) deliberately rigged the current system to quickly anoint the candidate with the resources to compete nationally. Naturally, they assumed it would be the likes of Jeb – the party chosen candidate who has all the money backing him.

Now that the system is giving them bad results, they want to change it….for this cycle. Then, they’ll go back to the old way – they hand pick the monied candidate and GOP votes continue to hold their noses and vote Dem-lite.

If they rob Trump, the GOp is finished.

Trump’s rise is in large part to the feeling that the voters aren’t being listened to or have their issues deliberately ignored. Over-riding Trump’s nomination in a fair and open primary contest is exactly the type of act fueling the anti-establishment spirit. It’s no different than electing an “outsider” to Congress, only to see him co-opted by the establishment and turned into a “yes man” for K Street.

I don’t think Trump’s the best choice. If he gets the nod, I’ll support him. If they pull a convention shenanigan, the GOP will forever break into a Dem-lite GOP and a TEA Party.

Blogger justaguy March 15, 2016 11:09 AM

Aren't the delegates to the convention picked by the party at the state level, so their loyalty after the first ballot won't be to the candidate but to the party. If Trump doesn't win on the first ballot, bring out more than the popcorn.

And Trump takes his first victory of the day in Northern Mariana Islands with 72%. Nine delegates there brings his total to 469. This makes his eighth state majority, meaning he can appear on the first ballot.

There are 358 delegates still available today. 286 are winner take all.

Cuckservatives also Double Down

For generations, conservatives have rightly railed against deterministic progressive notions that put human choices at the mercy of race, class, history, or economics. Those factors can create additional challenges, but they do not relieve any human being of the moral obligation to do their best. Yet millions of Americans aren’t doing their best. Indeed, they’re barely trying. As I’ve related before, my church in Kentucky made a determined attempt to reach kids and families that were falling between the cracks, and it was consistently astounding how little effort most parents and their teen children made to improve their lives. If they couldn’t find a job in a few days — or perhaps even as little as a few hours — they’d stop looking. If they got angry at teachers or coaches, they’d drop out of school. If they fought with their wife, they had sex with a neighbor. And always — always — there was a sense of entitlement. And that’s where disability or other government programs kicked in. They were there, beckoning, giving men and women alternatives to gainful employment. You don’t have to do any work (your disability lawyer does all the heavy lifting), you make money, and you get drugs. At our local regional hospital, it’s become a bitter joke the extent to which the community is hooked on “Xanatab” — the Xanax and Lortab prescriptions that lead to drug dependence. Of course we should have compassion even as we call on people to do better. I have compassion for kids who often see the worst behavior modeled at home. I have compassion for families facing economic uncertainty. But compassion can’t excuse or enable self-destructive moral failures.

My response (@35): Part 1:
Except NR's policies for the last few decades has been one large destructive moral failure.
The Government is not morally neutral. Big government less so. Remember Acton, power corrupts?
The Government NR has advocated is a grave evil. You don't care that 57 million babies have been murdered and you have told people to ignore that. You have no moral authority to speak. You don't care that Christians are now being forced to bake cakes for your gay friends getting married. You even insult the very morality these people have clung to, then somehow want it to be there when it comes to finding some minimum wage job that can't even pay enough to live on, or those huge college debts that benefit only your cronies. The Common Core that makes money for your consultants and manages to get children to pass tests without learning anything - they see the scam, so why stay around? And it is the very Obamacare you refuse to fight that provide the drugs. It is the very Man-fault court system that is breaking up families and you applaud. You, NR, are the morally corrupt ones. The modern Pharisees. The sons of the devil.

Where's your moral responsibility to do your best - to shatter the dependency culture which is across the board. You haven't mentioned Detroit and Chicago and they are worse than Kentucky. Are these people irrecoverably bad? What should be done with them? They are an extra generation down. They don't even try. Where is your Rule of Law for those here illegally? You are corrupt and corrupting. When was the last time you mentioned abortion or sodomy or even the STD pandemic as moral problems?

We've known you were devils for a while. Enemies of all that is true and good. You just want to die with the most toys. We want you to die too - for your crimes against us, but it seems exile will work since Canada and Europe and other countries will be stupid enough to accept you. You can destroy some other country. We want ours back. We want it to be great. And we can make it Great again.

Blogger tz March 15, 2016 11:40 AM

Part 2

Wait until you see what happens when the coal mines, factories, small farms reopen. When the justice systems and laws are pro-family and designed to keep them together. When the black despair of Obama's change is replaced with the dazzling bright light of Trump's hopefulness. Americans are great, but they are being oppressed and repressed by the likes of you. Trump will get you and your corrupt crony policies out of the way.

You have forgotten in becoming your own form of progressive secularist that Hope itself is a Virtue. You are beginning to feel the despair of someone who has no future. Are you going to go on disability and commit adultery with Hillary? Many have suggested they will.

And that is what you cannot tolerate because Trump has defined it as Hope and Faith in America's Greatness. The rest is just unimportant details. Technocratic Ted will reestablish some kind of abstract constitutional thingy that no one can understand how it will restore America. The rest are on your side. Trump has a vision for America, of something great, maybe bigger than life. And his supporters can see it.

All you offer is the same cuckservative hellhole where we must obey and not rock the boat as we allow the Lilliputians to tie us down - speaking of disabled - you say it would be offensive to get up. Let Mexico and China rape us. Let Europe have us provide protection. Keep kicking hornets' nests in the middle east. Stay in the same cold, dark, gray hole while you - "we're better than you" keep telling us that we have to be slaves for a few more years.

Perhaps the greatest thing about Trump's America is you will have no place in it. Illegals of any kind won't. There will be no court for the Courtiers. Perhaps he is our Cromwell, but it is time for Regicide as the King is blind and deaf to any reason and has no mercy and has sold us out to our enemies for a few coins. Is it any wonder that the Evangelicals who have no King but Jesus are rejecting your pretense?

I know its IL, but here is my field report. GOP leaning suburb of Chicago, we are cracked to be uncompetitive in the US House, but the state guys are out in force because if they piss us off there is a chance we could remove them. So I shook hands with my state congressman as I do twice every 2 years. Apparently he feels our polling place is where he gets the most bang for his buck, or maybe he lives here and is just lazy. I ask him about the pension crisis every time, he deflects, starting to become a prevoting ritual for me.

Signage: No Federal Candidates. Congress, Senate/President. Bunch of local guys. Water supervisor and whatnot.

Lines: No lines. Got there around 9:45am, 46th GOP ballot Dem ballot was also in the 40s. There are 3 precincts at the polling place so figure 250 voters. No substantial change from 2012 at this point.

I was going to pull for Bernie because Clinton has been attacking him on the radio. I don't know if it was just preventative or if he is a lot closer than the public polls. But then fascists had to go and shut down Trump's rally so I pulled for him. Made my voting easier because if the GOP bothers to field a candidate below US Senator, it is only a 1 name sacrifice. And they don't bother for pretty much anything in cook county.

Tonight is a double edged sword for supporters of Cruz. In order to have a chance to beat Trump, he needs the rest of the field cleared, which means he needs both Kasich and Rubio to lose tonight. But in the meantime, Illinois and Missouri are also voting tonight, and with Rubio and Kasich syphoning off support which might otherwise go to Cruz, Trump is likely to win in those states also.

A knock-out blow against both Kasich and Rubio is necessary for Cruz, but it may be too late for him to mount a credible comeback against Trump - even if the other two candidates drop out. Furthermore, there is no credible evidence that ALL of the supporters of Kasich and/or Rubio will flock to Cruz.

Who is to blame? Chris Christie. By weakening Rubio in New Hamphire, he gave false hope to Kasich, who should have left the campaign weeks ago. Then Rubio, who would still have lost big to both Trump and Cruz in subsequent states, could have been convinced to withdraw before now.

So, if/when Trump wins, he can thank Christie for keeping Kasich in the game long enough to split the vote.

Trump has had a more difficult time selling his brand of populism in Western states, with Cruz notching wins in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Wyoming, Idaho and Alaska. But he still seems on track to win. Colorado, which is full of transplanted Californians, and the West Coast states are more ideologically aligned with the New York City political environment which spawned Trump. It may not be quite over for Cruz tonight. But it's tough to see a clear path to the nomination for him. It would be extraordinary for him to make a comeback after tonight.

Cruz has come out explicitly on multiple occasions as being against a brokered convention. And Carly Fiorina, who recently endorsed Cruz, has come out in support of Trump's right to say what he wants, and against the protesters. She also, like Cruz, thinks a brokered convention is absurd.

Cruz also recently reiterated that if he loses to Trump, he will back Trump. Kasich (and his fellow Establishmentarians) who dreams of a brokered convention whereby the Party Establishment candidate gets the nomination is a pipe dream. Cruz won't support it, and neither will Trump. Without the cooperation of at least one of those guys, the Establishment is fucked.

But they are still holding onto their fantasy, instead of simply letting Cruz and Trump battle it out like men.

The only reason Donald Trump has any support is because white people are scared of and feel guilty regarding their treatment of People of Color.

Exactly zero guilt about minorities here. Minorities in this country have more than mere political and economic equality -- they receive preferential treatment in university admission, hiring, and government contracting. They receive welfare at far greater rates than whites. For the past 50 years, the entire nation has been mired in the question of how we help minorities succeed.

And no matter what we do, it's never enough. In fact, the more we've done, the more ridiculous the demands from minorities have grown, and the more hatred has been directed toward whites. Hispanics demand free movement in and out of the United States as well as the effective right to dodge the federal taxes that they vote to impose on whites. The latest demand from blacks for "safe space" - while they of course remain free to go wherever they please. Attempts to allow whites to defend themselves from the continuing epidemic of black crime are shouted down as racist by an overtly hostile corporate media, controlled by the usual suspects. The net result is a constant push toward second class citizenship for whites.

The writing is on the wall: appeasement, as usual, has failed, and more appeasement will meet the same fate. The only tenable position for whites is to fight back. If not they face the same slow extermination they are experiencing in Africa.

As our gracious host's pointed out, people in Europe know what criminals the American political class are, Russia's already banned foreign-funded NGOs and control of media apparatus, and a few days ago one of the commenters here linked China recognising that western NGOs are essentially infiltration units. Ah, I still remember with pride when China arrested those feminists last Women's Day. Very poignant.

The rest of the world might resent America - but it certainly isn't the portion which follows Trump.

Yes, the GOPe Sodomites have dubbed it their "splinter" strategy. But I don't think it'll come to a brokered convention. He will either win the nomination and be chosen or he will be outright disqualified and barred from the convention by the RNC.

As has been pointed out, if Trump wins 2 out of the 3 WTA states then it's a mathematical lock. And even if Trump wins just Florida, he still probably secures enough delegates based on high proportional victories in the other States where he polls extremely well.

Missouri is only entirely a winner take all state if one candidate gets 50%+1 of the vote. Else it's winner take all 7 delegates per Congressional district, and 12 to the overall state winner.

Based on stops he made this weekend, Cruz appears to think he has a chance in at least a couple of Congressional districts in the state. On the other hand, our primary is open, unlike Oklahoma and Kansas caucus, but that won't necessarily matter in one of the districts he visited because it's so Red.

As a chap who lives in the Northeast:

Many cops are very good shooters, and their training is set up to prevent them from hesitating in a stress situation. The image of the cop who has never upholstered their service weapon is kind of false these days, at least around where I live. I would not like to go up against them in a pistol fight.

Now when you go to the big cities like NYC, the police are less skilled as they only qualify once a year, and have the DA only pistols with trigger pulls in the 9 + Lb. range. Those fellows are likely not very good shots, but they make up for it with volume of fire.

Also all of the big city police forces that have these limitations all now have "tactical teams" for any kind of a shoot out situation. These guys are all very well trained and are on call for any armed situation. Again I would not like to go up against them.

An argument could be made once you get to long arms they are not so well trained, but that is offset with the fact that in the last decade a lot of the police are former vets and since at least 2003 a part of the Army small arms training has been SRM, so I expect a lot of the police are pretty decent with AR-15 rifles and used to using them without hesitation.

When shooting in the yearly state NG TAG matches, it was inevitable the reservist teams that had police on than that won the pistol matches, which were all accuracy combined with speed at ranges from 35 to 15 yards.

Not to say that there are not skilled citizens out there that are better, but relative to the vast majority of citizens the police are both fairly proficient and used to minimizing the time to shoot once a decision to escalate to that level is made.

That said I do not think most police are mentally prepared to fight against a determined foe unless they have an advantage in numbers.

I saw something a few years ago about the number of hunters in Wisconsin for one season being in the neighborhood of 600,000. That is bigger than most standing armies for most countries. For one state. Nationally, there are about 200,000 police total. Even in states with large metropolitan areas, there are still bound to be quite a few hunters, people proficient with high-powered rifles and sneaking up on game. Tell me again about how the cops will win, assuming most of them wouldn't support an uprising instead of the government.

If the tide turns politically, how many of those hunters are going to support the current political environment and how many are going to fight? Many here have pointed out the Revolutionary War was fought by less than 5% of the populace.

Blogger Sam Lively March 15, 2016 2:23 PM

The Revolutionary War was fought with a 3,500 mile moat.

The Civil War is the more pertinent example - I believe 12% of pop fought in that one.

Anonymous Sam the Man March 15, 2016 2:27 PM

# 126:

Notice my last sentence, I was simply making an observation as to their marksmanship level with pistol and their mind set that would allow them to operate without hesitation in a situation that would escalate to shooting. That willingness I why three are more bad shots then ever before.

I do not know the mental state of police with regards what you are discussing, but if there was a ground swell against a central power, I would expect most police would go the way of the local government, at least the government level they are paid at. Ultimately the mindset of the police will typically go along with what they are ordered to do. That is one reason the Germans used local police to round up folks in the countries they occupied, the police would do it as log as they saw the order coming from their official chain of command.

Hopefully this is not derailing the actual conversation on the election, just in case I will cease on this topic, the only point I was trying to make is most police these days, (at least in the Northeast) are pretty decent shooters, in my observation.

It's interesting that Mr. Pitts (correctly) observes that the phenomenon behind Trump will not go away if Trump himself is defeated, but then goes on to prescribe in response... more progressivism.

I wonder if the word 'iatrogenic' would mean anything to him.

However, I finally met one person in Florida willing to vote for Rubio. As expected, he is one of those "foam party" types.

The exit polls I've looked at have Trump winning among Baby Boomers, Trump and Cruz tied among Gen-Xers, and Cruz winning the 18-35 age bracket.

I've looked at exit polls in several states, and they are all similar. Ultimately, Trump is winning, so it doesn't matter now, but it might matter in 8 years.

Since we're sharing much in the way of anecdotal information here today, my circle of GOP friends is tilting strongly toward Trump vs the field, probably 60/40 - my estimate. A few diehard Cruzers. Nobody outwardly supporting Little Rubio or Gaysuck. I expect many of the non-believers to fall in line once Trump gets the nomination.
My most vocal Trump-supporting friend is a Mexican who immigrated here legally years ago and treasures this country more than most native born. He uses the F word a lot when speaking of liberals. I find it endearing.

Blogger Lew Rand March 15, 2016 4:14 PM

I'll play. My mother's first reaction to Trump was "He'll loot the treasury". After pointing out that is what all politicians are doing she came back with "But he'll be too good at it". She has mostly come around.

My brother's first reaction was "He's a liar". Almost solely fueled by the Oliver hit piece. Today he comes in and starts discussing civilly the potential for chaos at he convention if it goes brokered. Not goody Trump will lose but more how can they do that?

My mom's biggest problem is that I take too much joy in Hillary's problems. She doesn't like me being so uncivil. But in that specific case, it is too hard, so I just don't mention her :D

More voter fraud from the GOPe:
Leading Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s name was left off Florida primary ballots according to reports relayed by Fox News’ Jennifer Eckhart on Twitter who said the local Fox affiliate has received “dozens of complaints.”

Eckhart wrote the irregularities are in “Jupiter County” which does not exist. She probably meant the town of Jupiter or Palm Beach County where Jupiter is located. Palm Beach County is where Trump’s Florida base Mar-a-Lago is located.

And Trump takes his first victory of the day in Northern Mariana Islands with 72%.

Noooooo…..it can't be!

Blogger Scott6584 March 15, 2016 4:35 PM

Here is the explanation for those ballots without Trump's name from the FAQ window on a county election site in Florida:

I'm an Independent voter, can I vote however I want in Florida?

The term "independent" requires a bit of explanation in order to answer this question. Although common in other states, independent means something completely different in Florida When you are registered as an independent voter in Florida, you are registered with a minor political party. Many voters who are new to Florida simply write the word, "independent" on their Voter Registation Application. We often ask for clarification to make sure you intend to register with a political party affiliation. If you want no party affiliation, you should check the box for "None."

Florida is a closed primary state. This means only voters who are registered members a political party may vote for their party candidates in a Primary election. Primary elections are normally held in August of even-numbered years. Voters who are not affilated with a political party receive a nonpartisan ballot in a Primary election. A nonpartisan ballot includes all judicial and school board offices, as well as local referendum questions. All registered voters, including those without party affiliation and minor political party voters are entitled to vote on all of the nonpartisan offices and ballot issues. However, any voter of any political party affiliation can vote for any candidate in a General election. General elections are held in November of even-numbered years.

If someone goes in and declares as an independent, then they don't get the ballot with Trump's name (or any other candidates of the Republican or Democratic parties). I would guess that some people who are voting for Trump are identifying as independents, and given the independent ballot instead of the Republican ballot.

There! "Conspiracy" solved.

Blogger Quizzer W March 15, 2016 4:35 PM

@173 Pictures of the ballots? A different news outlet covering the story? Perhaps a reporter interviewing election officials? Doesn't the Trump organization have a "voter fraud investigation" effort? Maybe just a determination if this is a localized problem or all over the state.

Everybody loves a good Oceans 11 story where the group of misunderstood thieves robs from a filthy casino owner. Poor, poor, GOPe. So misunderstood by the 47% of the people who are not Trump supporters, if earlier polls can be believed.

i think i've identified a problem.

the Northern Mariana have had a governor since 1978, all but 8 years have been lead by either a Republican or an independent who converted to Republican in office.

they have a long history of corruption and collusion, being a not insignificant part of the scandal that brought down Abramoff and DeLay. prostitution and ( effective ) slave labor were two of the biggest scandals.

Dennis Hastert used to fly to the Mariana islands for sex junkets ..., many other top Republicans have visited the islands.

you could probably catch a bunch of these pedophile faggot Republicans if you simply kept an eye on the passenger lists of DC Republicans headed out on sight seeing junkets.

David French is defending the indefensible. Several years ago, French wrote a couple articles about Norman Finkelstein who was fighting a battle with Dershowitz for his professional life against Dershowitz's lies. Frencg started writing without any consideration for the argument going on, or what Dershowitz was trying to do to Finkelstein and why.

Basically, Finkelstein and a co-author nailed Dershowitz to the wall for plagiarism and in doing so Finkelstein committed truth against Dershowitz.

French is a Lawyer and Army JAG Officer, and he was trading on the supposed moral authority those things give him. He's doing the same thing with the article sticking up for something he should not be defending. The man is simply a hack, which, I guess, is the major qualification for being a scribbler at NRO these days.
