It's called "rhetoric"

Thomas Friedman needs a copy of SJWs Always Lie:
Donald Trump is a walking political science course. His meteoric rise is lesson No. 1 on leadership: Most voters do not listen through their ears. They listen through their stomachs. If a leader can connect with them on a gut level, their response is: “Don’t bother me with the details. I trust your instincts.” If a leader can’t connect on a gut level, he or she can’t show them enough particulars. They’ll just keep asking, “Can you show me the details one more time?”

Trump’s Republican rivals keep thinking that if they just point out a few more details about him, voters will drop The Donald and turn to one of them instead. But you can’t talk voters out of something that they haven’t been talked into.

Many have come to Trump out of a gut feeling that this is a guy who knows their pain, even if he really doesn’t. Many of his supporters are from the #middleagewhitemalesmatter movement, for whom the current age of acceleration has not been kind and for whom Trump’s rallies are their way of saying “Can you hear me now?” and of sticking it to all the people who exploited their pain but left them behind, particularly traditional Republican elites. They are not interested in Trump’s details. They like his gut.
Scott Adams calls Trump a Master Persuader. That's hypnotist jargon for being a master of rhetoric. Donald Trump speaks to the emotions more effectively than the other candidates, most of whom are also speaking in rhetoric, albeit less effective rhetoric.

That's why them suddenly switching to dialectic - or sometimes, pseudo-dialectic - is so off-putting. In essence, Trump's critics are losing the argument in English, so they're abruptly switching to Chinese to try to convince English-speakers to change their mind. It should be no surprise to anyone who has read and understood either Rhetoric or SJWAL that this has not been effective for them.

So, do you suppose Vox, or anyone else, that those who are gnashing their teeth at Trump will come around? I know a lot of family and friends who JUST CAN'T BELIEVE Trump is winning, and they're just as emotional about their disdain as Trumpers are with their support. I mean, I suppose I could slap them in the face with some REALTALK, but I'd like something more gentle.

Aristotle writes something about how you must use rhetoric well with a judge so that if you lose to him, emotional backlash will flow directly to the judge for him not having the right emotions to lead to a proper decision.

The GOPe is the emotional judge, biased against the rhetoric of Trump. The hate toward them builds every time they double down.

Anonymous The S:PY March 09, 2016 8:18 AM

Trump has already gone places no candidate ever has, even telling us he has a big penis. One day he may go too far (if he hasn’t already) and sever his gut connection with voters. Trump’s other joker is that among those attracted to his gut are racists and fascists with a taste for violence at his rallies. One day they may go too far and do something so ugly, so brownshirt, it will also turn people off to his gut.

Yep. Trump always appeals to those evil racists.

Any respectable journalist must always let us know that. Gives them street cred among their peers I guess.

Anonymous PhillipGeorge©2016 March 09, 2016 8:25 AM

a group of people whose only belief system is self interest.

the electorate should respond with incandescent rage.

If they started with dialectic and stuck with it, win loose or draw they could at least escape with their integrity. Now they leave with nothing.

Blogger dc.sunsets March 09, 2016 8:30 AM

You nailed it. Trump is a salesman of extraordinary natural (and polished) skill.

This is not an insult, it's a dispassionate description. I spent 27 years in sales; my modest success came by brute-forcing what you'd call "dialectic" (features & benefits) because I lacked the natural gut-level pathways of natural salesmen. I always knew there were far better salesmen than me, and accepted my place in the matrix while watching less intelligent people who didn't even understand the products that well place in the top 5% year after year.

People buy emotion. They rationalize on data.

If you don't get the former you'll miss on 60% of sales interactions and the 40% you win will be based on a mountain of data, which means if you don't have a highly differentiated product you'll fail miserably.

In the ethos, pathos, logos progression, it isn't even pathos.

No one believes the professional politicians. Either they are admitting betrayal, outright lying, or no one expects them to do anything but cave to the establishment, the only question is how many hours in office until it happens.

Ron Paul was a warning - Dr. No. Now we have Goldfinger.

My earlier example - I like 50% of Trumps proposals, but can live with the other half and I expect him to get almost everything through. Goldman's boy Ted is deceitful, but even if he is telling the truth, he won't fight McConnell and Ryan (the latter got a standing-o at CPAC, where Cruz won the straw poll, Rubio 2nd). I may like 90% of his proposals but will be lucky to get 10%.
Is the EPA more likely to be defanged under "You're fired" Trump or "But it wasn't nice that you lied!" Cruz?
Ethos:
I'm the establishment (Jeb! - click off)
I'll work with the establishment (Cruz - except for televangelicals, click)
I'm going to blow it to smithereens and rescue your jobs and culture. (puts down the remote after turning up the volume). You know me from my projects and "The Apprentice"...

He is polarizing, and that is exactly what is missing. Last time it was Romney as Obama-lite and Obama as Romney-lite. Coke v.s. Pepsi.

The people who hate Trump are likely gammas and white knights who just hate alphas or like the woman who crys and complains how mean her boyfriend is while clutching him as he accelerates on his Harley.

It should be interesting. Depending on the alpha envy, Trump's persuasion can turn using what the establishment has done: hold your nose and vote for me. Or, "You want to keep America petty?". If you had a free night in any hotel, you'd prefer Motel-6 to one of Trumps?
Hillary will collapse even is she isn't indicted before November.

Blogger dc.sunsets March 09, 2016 8:37 AM

I mean, I suppose I could slap them in the face with some REALTALK, but I'd like something more gentle.

From my experience, humans have two-track mental processes. We believe we make most decisions rationally, in our neocortex, but in truth we are creatures of emotion. The vast majority of non-numeric decisions we make originate in our limbic system, the seat of emotion (and sense of self.)

The limbic system is where impulsive acts arise. It is where our biases exist, tangled with our perception of who we are. It subtly steers our actions even when we think it's our reason calling the shots. It is difficult to slap our impulsive mind's "hands" away from the wheel.

For this reason, I think you're wasting your time. Most people can no more swap out their emotional set-point than a tiger can change its stripes. The harder you try to REALTALK them out of their emotional set-point, the more they'll hate you for attacking them at the seat of who they think they are.

I desperately want to see a Trump v HillBilly contest if for no other reason than I can't wait to see what Trumpisms are delivered when that vicious bat is the target.

I could only watch about ten minutes of the last repub debate, but the "little Marco" line was gasp-inducing funny.

What will Trump say? Will it be "my opponent blew up Libya and got an ambassador killed," or "Geeze, look at her! I wouldn't even employ a maid who looked that old, ugly, used-up and angry...I'd be afraid she'd put a rattlesnake in my underwear drawer."

Anonymous VFM #6306 March 09, 2016 8:49 AM

Here is the other side of it: people have wanted a wall for as long as I can remember...for completely logical reasons. The politicians have promised one for a long time, including Ted Cruz. Nothing.

Trump's rhetoric didn't sound typical. "Big, beautiful." With two words, Trump whipped Cruz's wonky, politiciany rhetoric.

I think Sigmas would be almost unanimous for Trump because they aren't worried about the hierarchy, just the results. Cruz as methodical sigma sniper isn't forceful enough, we need a Sherman tank. If the Establishment opposition was weaker and less entrenched maybe he could accomplish things. Cruz would have a legacy, but he would avoid many conflicts Trump is going to win.
Imagine if Vox was an Alpha and the conflicts he declined to pursue as a Sigma.

Who helps finance the Blaze and Glenn Beck? The answer is Goldman Sachs.

One of the reasons why I still do Facebook, in spite of VD's excellent advice to the contrary, is Nassim Nicholas Taleb, whose FB page is replete with sage advice. Here is his most recent posting, which I am taking the trouble to block and copy:

What we are seeing worldwide, from India to the UK to the US, is the rebellion against the inner circle of no-skin-in-the-game policymaking "clerks" and journalists-insiders, that class of paternalistic semi-intellectual experts with some Ivy league, Oxford-Cambridge, or similar label-driven education who are telling the rest of us 1) what to do, 2) what to eat, 3) how to speak, 4) how to think... and 5) who to vote for.

With psychology papers replicating less than 40%, dietary advice reversing after 30y of fatphobia, macroeconomic analysis working worse than astrology, microeconomic papers wrong 40% of the time, the appointment of Bernanke who was less than clueless of the risks, and pharmaceutical trials replicating only 1/5th of the time, people are perfectly entitled to rely on their own ancestral instinct and listen to their grandmothers with a better track record than these policymaking goons.

Indeed one can see that these academico-bureaucrats wanting to run our lives aren't even rigorous, whether in medical statistics or policymaking. I have shown that most of what Cass-Sunstein-Richard Thaler types call "rational" or "irrational" comes from misunderstanding of probability theory.

That's about the maximum distance on the IQ scale between people who can stand each other. When it's larger than that, the higher is bored by the lower, and the lower finds the higher as abrasive as a belt-sander.

Ethos fail in action.

Watching Glenn Beck have a meltdown and announcing he will have - only for Blaze Subscribers - a one-hour takedown of Trump's latest presser.
Aside from the picayune nature of the complaints, at some point he must realize he has driven everyone who doesn't enjoy Ted Cruz commercials 24/7 to unsubscribe.
Those he will be explaining to don't need to be convinced. Those he was burned the bridges to won't hear it.

He also complained about Drudge not being impartial with his little Marco pictures.

I remember the excuse pretzel like twists they used (and were wrong about) to explain Ted Cruz' campaign dirty trick against Carson in Iowa.

You can only retain Ethos in a political campaign is you are strict about criticizing everyone's errors, not just your opposition, but it is even worse to try to make an obvious mistake or peccadillo from your guy look like it was a righteous act. You can even retain it by staying above even if you are analyzing and reporting the game.

I doubt there has even been 15 minutes of actual policy "this is specifically why Cruz will fix America" talk, just mud slung at Trump, but the hagiography of Cruz.

A dishonest broker won't be listened to even if he is right.

And after 30 years of lies, betrayals, and broken promises the logical default position when they cry wolf is to assume wolves are now totally extinct. They have created a situation where the bar is so low that it is buried. Trump might be lying? You mean like we know from experience Rubio, Kasich, and Cruz are? Trump won't keep his promises? ... Like Rubio, Kasich, and Cruz? Trump is coarse and vulgar. Slick and nice has gotten us further away. Trump is ... Let me interrupt you to ask why you aren't even bothering to try to convince me any one of the other candidates will actually accomplish something I find critical and urgent if it is not because you know they will never actually accomplish it?

So it is back to Ethos with Cruz. Cruz has said what he will TRY to do, Trump has said there will be a price to pay for opposition. Cruz, and Beck for that matter can try to shift the argument from WHAT he will do to what he WILL do, but I don't think they realize they need to, or they would have a problem with the CFR/Goldman Sachs connections. Policy wonks (logos) like Teddy are a dime a dozen. Everyone knows our country is on the edge of an Abyss and at least the financial system is about to go over (pathos). But who is going to do something for Americans, and not just give a few more billions to the Elite who are cheering the fire? Cruz, maybe. Trump, definitely - however there are arguments to be made which could weaken his lead here but they aren't easy, and they won't work anyway if there is no alternative. Also on the Ethos front is the talk of a brokered convention - hence Romney helps Trump.

What some people don't understand is that to be angry at Trump, is to be angry at those supporting him. People FEEL that. I'm a Cruz supporter, and I feel the anger directed at Trump...and it disgusts me. The more the Establishment types rail at Trump, the more sympathy I feel, not so much for Trump, but for those supporting him.

Am I frustrated that Cruz is a naturally introverted man, who is not that physically attractive, and doesn't connect on an emotional level? Of course I am. Because I think Cruz has a more coherent and long-term plan to turn the country around. And speaking from the POV of a Texan, one of the main reasons we like Cruz is, "He fights."

What others may see as dirty tricks, we see as him fighting for us. He doesn't do it with the smoothness and glibness of Trump, but the man has consistently fought for Texas, and for small business over big business, and for smaller government over bigger government, and for reining in the "Washington Cartel." We love the fact that he doesn't care who he pisses off - including frontal attacks on both Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, and Speaker of the House John Boehner.

But setting all that aside, I understand that Cruz just doesn't connect on an emotional level like Trump does.

But I'm way more pissed off at the GOPe than I am at Trump for co-opting the Republican party. At this point, I see Trump as the presumptive nominee. Even as a Cruz supporter, I'm just not angry about that - not because I like Trump, but because I don't dislike the people who are supporting him.

Anonymous Millenium March 09, 2016 10:23 AM

@64 If Trump is blocked then a lot of people are going to realize the system is rigged, voting is pointless and they will mentally check out of the game.

Cruz messed up big time. He had it right early on in not attacking Trump, and when he did attack Trump, he should have left open some room to later support Trump.

As a natural introvert, in supporting Trump he should have a one way ticket to life tenure on SCOTUS, which is exactly where he belongs. But now, he's just known as lying Ted.

True but irrelevant to the point being refuted: 1 SD. That's about the maximum distance on the IQ scale between people who can stand each other. When it's larger than that, the higher is bored by the lower, and the lower finds the higher as abrasive as a belt-sander.

Trump doing well ain't got shit to do with how he says things. It's WHAT HE IS SAYING and that's always been the case.

I anticipated someone like him showing up from seeing the EU and British Parliamentary elections in 2014-15, and seeing as those elections were highly motivated by the immigration and the EU, it shouldn't be a shock that the ONE GUY that brought up immigration and government overreach/abuse was the guy that everyone flocked to.

The politicians on both sides have had their chance to listen to the electorate and do what we elected them to do. They've squandered our posterity, and with it our patience and goodwill. We all know the media is full of a shit, which is why the harder they've railed against him, the more we embrace him.

We want a fucking wall, we want Obamacare repealed, we want some of these shithead fuckwit traitorous bureaucrats held accountable for their corrupt behavior. Fuckers ARE going to jail when Trump gets sworn in. And the political establishment knows this which is why they are so desperate to stop him. But their lies are transparent, and they've been forced to fully step forth and show where their loyalties lie, and we shall hold them to account accordingly.

America has never been it's government, but it's Constitution, Bill of Rights, and its People. We're cut from a very different cloth than any other nation on this Earth. And we're fucking pissed. We're throwing out the bums this election cycle, and they better pray to God that that's ALL we do to them....

It's really amazing how similar Murray's new contract in Tennessee looks to the contract the Cowboys offered him to stay in Dallas last year - about $6 million a year with $12 million guaranteed. The Titans restructured Murray's contract to 4 years, $25.5 million, with $12.5 million guaranteed.

It's a good deal for his talent level.

People normally speak in a kind of limbic shorthand with 90% of the information assumed and so not spoken. A Master Communicator knows how to structure his communication so that his words are a very pretty box people are free to fill with whatever content the desire.

Like Hope and Change.

"High IQs find average joes more enjoyable to be around than midwits."

I think one of the marks of high intelligence is the ability to find interest in anything. 1-2 SD people tend to be obsessively specialist-collecting information about what they care about- whether its Pokemon or physics.

Some of the most interesting conversations Ive ever had are with not smart people. I have no experience being a trucker, or a steel worker, or prison, or lots of other things. Talking to a trucker about trucking is really interesting.

Midwits tend to be solipsistic-so obsessed with the little fraction of knowledge that makes them "smart" they cannot talk about someone elses experience or expertise- its threatening to their self image.

I also think this is where spergy obsessives over THE IQ IT IS EVERYTHING (Steve Sailer fans can go this route....) miss out.

Id much rather hang out with some low IQ decent family oriented blacks (Ive known quite a few-especially older black men who tend to be great folks) than with higher IQ obsessives blathering on and on and on about the ten studies they read about racial differences.

High IQ in a population is important. On the individual level character trumps sperg.

JaimeInTexas, repetition is one of the classical rhetorical techniques.

It needs to be used carefully. Repeat yourself exactly, you sound like a robot. Repeat too much, you sound like a broken record.

To someone who is intelligent and has a good memory, they get it the first time, get reinforced the second, and annoyed the third. But the mass of normal people need it repeated different ways 3-5 times.

(I'm not including catchphrases and slogans here.)

Cruz leaves me stone cold.

I'm not an American, so not his audience, and no doubt there's a certain appeal there which I'm completely missing.

But I've watched US Presidents since Reagan and could always see something there to explain how they convinced a great democracy to elect them. (Except Bush the Elder, he had the charisma of a raw carrot.)

I find Ted Cruz to be viscerally off-putting. His queasy smile. His too-soft voice. His cheese melt face.

He comes across like a baddie from some post-apocalyptic drama. As if he'd try to smooth talk you into joining his community of survivors, only when you got there you'd find out they were cannibals or something.

I'd sooner vote for The Governor from The Walking Dead. I don't approve of his killing everyone with an Aug Steyr policy, but I do approve of his tank-bringing policy.

My son says it's too sweet, but it is 85 proof, not quite 90, they make a 101 IIRC. It is a bit sweet, but good for dessert. I don't always eat dessert, but when I do, I prefer whiskey be involved.

I find Ted Cruz to be viscerally off-putting. His queasy smile. His too-soft voice. His cheese melt face.

Ron Paul was more likeable, but he couldn't win people over either.

Steve,

Your characterization of Cruz is spot on. I just can't stand the guy. The voice, the look, the fastidiously practiced timbre and phrasing of his words just make my skin crawl.

He appeals directly to the American conservative's desire for abstract ideological purity. In some ways his complete lack of authentic or attractive personality helps him - he has a cult of anti-personality.

Cruz was well-positioned to be the Slow Progressive Party's idea of an "outsider" candidate. Without Trump, he would have been the "kind of weird, but contentious in a good way" politician that saw everything wrong with Party, and ran against its Establishment interests. The Establish would have tried to use him as a stalking horse: someone who could capture the populist unrest but maybe could be brought to heel via Goldman Sachs or skeletons if necessary, but who could be beaten by the machine using a handful of magic Bush beans before it ever came to that.

They weren't expecting a prominent rank and file career businessman to stand up and actually reject the Party insiders altogether.

Carter's problem when he won as an outsider due to unrest was that he couldn't work with Congress. Not only can Trump work with Congress, Art of the Deal style, but he doesn't have to for a number of things. Today, he can build a wall by Executive Order...when Carter's main job was to show that the Executive Office was not as strong and corrupt as Nixon made people think it was.

It is sweet but its not to sweet. Honestly I don't know what "to sweet" would be for bourbon. Bourbon is supposed to be sweet.

This Cruz for SCOTUS talk is wearying. Good SCOTUS justices have to get along with the other justices and be able to persuade and work as a team. Cruz has none of those qualities. He should shut himself in a room somewhere, avoid all contact with people and try and invent something.

Blogger jmarinara March 09, 2016 1:08 PM

The TL;DR version:

"Thinking emotionally is not only cool but is now the preferred method of supporting candidates." I'm sure that will work out just dandy for our Constitutional Republic.

Blogger Ingot9455 March 09, 2016 1:17 PM

@153 My reading on the Supreme Court says otherwise, Andrew E.

The Supreme Court Justices don't talk much to each other or politick too much at each other. They're all just high-end prima donna know-it-alls (or leave-it-all-to-their-clerks) that they do mostly their own thing. They communicate with their official votes and their circulated writings.

Even the liberal bloc is that way. They're just the tighter bloc because liberal is predictable.

This has been the case for more than 2,400 years. The Constitutional Republic died in 1865. The Forced Union is not the voluntary Constitutional Republic.

Sadly your reading is exactly incorrect. Kennedy for example was a staunch conservative when appointed. But as soon as he stopped getting invited to the right cocktail parties he started veering left. He's the greatest example of a cuck there is.

No the elites are very much socialites. Now guys like Alito and especially Thomas don't much care. Thomas would rather be driving around in his RV anyway. The left side... its a whole different deal.

Donald Trump as President is best suited to make it possible for humanity to escape a WW III nuclear holocaust. He is the only presidential candidate that can do this. (But one hopes that during the campaign he is not influenced by neocons like John Bolton.) David Stockman puts it this way:

“…A nation tumbling into financial and fiscal crisis will welcome the War Party purge that Trump would surely undertake. He didn’t allow the self-serving busy-bodies and fools who inhabit the Council on Foreign Relations to dupe him into believing the Putin is a horrible threat; or that the real estate on the eastern edge of the non-state of the Ukraine, which has always been either a de jure or de facto part of Russia, was any of our business. Likewise, he has gotten it totally right with respect to the sectarian and tribal wars of Syria and Iraq and Hillary’s reckless destruction of a stable regime in Libya.” [8]

Ron Paul is a grandfatherly old gentleman. You could see him, a retired ob-gyn, doing the hand shaking, baby holding thing without coming off as fake or creepy. He was no charmer, salesman however. He taught his audience like a college professor. He spoke dialectic mainly which is why his audience was small but passionate.

In the military and as a tradesman, I've spent most of my working life among people with 2+SD lower IQ than mine. Don't go high hat with them and they're fine. They would generally think I'm a little weird because I'd read on my lunch break, but as long as I did my work well, they didn't make it their business. Simple respect, is all.

I'm cautious, as befits a man far past his prime, but I'm not yet so old and weak as to want to avoid all unnecessary risk.
