Let me explain how this Internet thing works

Bryan Thomas Schmidt doesn't seem to realize that it's a very bad idea to say one thing in public and another in private.

He posted this on Facebook yesterday:
"So apparently the abominable Vox Day put me on his Hugo list this year. First I heard if it. I have paid NO attention this year to lists, etc. I would demand removal but he clearly cares not what people think and states flat out he will not entertain removal requests. I “No Awarded” him last year and would again. I do not approve of this and see it as his attempt to do me further harm. Just going to ignore."
Just a few hours before emailing me this:
don’t have eligible works of any note this year for Long Form Editor. FYI. Would appreciate being left off the list.

Thanks.
BTS
Now, I find it mildly amusing that Bryan Thomas Schmidt thinks I care enough about him to attempt to do him any harm, especially because he has managed to destroy his credibility more thoroughly than I could have if I tried. But as we are reliably informed that he has no eligible works of any note, I have replaced him in the Best Editor, Long Form category with Jim Minz of Baen Books. I trust he will be suitably grateful for my kindness.

I respect confidences, I abide by NDAs, and I keep the secrets I am told, but I do not provide cover for liars.

Dammit, keeping the goodfeels separate from the badthinkers, and more importantly letting the rightpeople say one thing to one group and another thing to the other group is exactly why we need gatekeepers!

But Vox, one can't let truth get in the way of a good public virtue signaling. You have to take those opportunities wherever and whenever you can.

Isn't telling that in the science fiction community, being a liar is preferable to associating with "people who think the wrong thoughts"?

You might as well call your entire blog Voxiversity, because it's always instructive.

Vox, I LOVED your Rabid Puppies press release. It was a masterpiece! This latest kerfuffle merely adds to your laurels (the evil variety, of course). Well played, Sir!

Anonymous Elipe March 23, 2016 11:33 AM

Oh, I foresee a hoisting by petards in Mr. Schmidt's near future when he appears on other lists.

Anonymous BTS March 23, 2016 11:49 AM

Oh Vox you're incorrigible. You know perfectly well I was kidding when I called you abominable. But I would really, really appreciate if you left off that list of, um, favours that I said I would do for you in that email. You know I would just die if that came out. Ta-ta

Blogger Sevron March 23, 2016 11:49 AM

I don't see how this will hurt him. To the rabbits, he changed his mind and bravely DEMANDED that the evil Man Who Must Not Be Named take him off The List, and then he was taken off the list. It's virtue signaling ++. What am I missing?

Blogger MATT March 23, 2016 11:56 AM

You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried.

Blogger GK Chesterton March 23, 2016 11:58 AM

I didn't pay attention to Sad Puppies I because I thought it would fail. I joined in Sad Puppies II because the first worked and II set out to prove things. I went Rabid in III because Torgersen was flayed alive and I wanted them to know I found them despicable.

Now I'm told I can't even like certain people. Fine I hate you.

Schmidt 'no awarded' you last year? Ironic, because he seemed quite put out at World Con when I saw him over himself being voted under 'no award.'

VD's very existence causes Brian feelbadz.

VD operates asymmetrically to them, such that they can't even conceptualize his world view.

Vox, it takes a big man to un-list an author of BTS' stature, so kudos for that. Then again, it takes a rabbit of rare, uh, character, to soil himself so publicly.

It seems like it would be a nice gesture to keep shining sunlight on him. Make sure to recommend him for additional categories in a "not quite good enough to be nominated, but worth mentioning" vibe. Reference him and his works occasionally, and generally keep him near the spotlight.

And as long as you speak kindly of him, who could possibly suggest that you were doing him harm?

Anonymous RedJack March 23, 2016 1:02 PM

While real life has taken center stage for me as late, I do make an effort to keep the supplies of crystal tear vials in stock for all the weeping rabbits. However, I must say this round of Hugomania is proving to tax even my resources of supply.

Screaming for being on the List? Dear boy, that isn't where the screaming begins! I am still have a few gross of timbers back ordered just to supply Kratman's weekend plans.

It is like they have never met a Horde before! Have standards fallen so much that the rabbits are scared of even being named?

This is why I hate the Morlocks and puppykickers: in a sane world, Mr. Schmidt and I could work together, and never find out whether our politics agreed or disagreed because who gives a flying skunkfart about that? I'd sell him a story, he's edit it, we'd shake hands, the readers get their money's worth, and it is a win-win all around, and the readers are all better off.

In the modern world of Morlock Mania, Mr. Schmidt must publicly denounce Mr. Beale as a crimethinking doubleplus ungoodnik during the Two Minute Hate, the quarrel goes public, a writer who is selling stories to both editors (me) still wants to maintain good relations with both, but if he is a loudmouth (me) he can see who is in the right and who is acting unprofessionally, bad feelings are engendered.... and the ultimate losers-out are the readers.

The readers lose. Who gains? What possible earthly good does this politically correct crybully anti-white antichrist bullshit doing for anyone?

The creatures are befouling their own nests as well as flinging poop at us. Why?

Some people just want to see the world burn.

If the guy this post is about was being unprofessional for calling Vox abominable on his Facebook page, what would you call what you just did here?

"If the guy this post is about was being unprofessional for calling Vox abominable on his Facebook page, what would you call what you just did here?

Exquisitely professional, polite, calm, and Christian. I am voicing regret that the Puppykickers have stirred up pointless enmity between Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Beale, and for no purpose.

What I wrote was an exemplar of studied good taste, good manners, pristine clarity, and solid common sense.

No one but a utterly brainless contortionist with his head up his anus could find fault with it.

Why do you ask? Do you find fault with it? If so, I have an industrial strength shampoo I can recommend once you unscrew your cranium from your fundament.

Or do you merely have ad hominem tu quoque as a macro on your computer, so that you can accuse innocent at the push of a button without bothering to read what was written?

I am voicing regret that the Puppykickers have stirred up pointless enmity between Mr. Schmidt and Mr. Beale, and for no purpose.

For my part, I am happy to declare that I feel absolutely no sense of enmity for Mr. Schmidt. He may not like me, but that is true of a great many people in SF/F and I can hardly hold it against them all.

In this matter, as in so many things, I share the opinion of my Vile Faceless Minions. I don't care.

Anonymous Tom Thumb March 23, 2016 4:26 PM

It would seem I misinterpreted your attack on Puppykickers as an attack on Mr. Schmidt. I apologize for this mistake. When you said "this politically correct crybully anti-white antichrist bullshit..." I assumed you were talking about Mr. Schmidt. Especially after that whole part about engendering bad feelings between yourself and an editor because you were a "loudmouth". I failed to see you were simply railing against the injustice of a society that would force one to denounce another, and so have no bad feelings towards Mr. Schimdt at all.

I mean since your post was just about the Puppykickers I'm wondering why the readers lose? Since Mr. Schmidt is not part of the crybully anti-white antichrist bullshit, surely you can still work with him. Or have the Morlocks someone prevented you from contacting each other?

Blogger Tom Kratman March 23, 2016 4:48 PM

Ya know, RJ, I'm not actually a sadist and would never do anything like that for recreation. But I cannot refuse to see the logic of the world or where its unavoidable truths lead me. And, so, it would be with the greatest reluctance that I would say, for example, "Nail the motherfucker up; 'nail some _sense_ into 'im'."

Never mind- as the Even Supreme Dark Lord Himself hath decreed:

I don't care.

They avoid using his chosen name like the plague. From context, I think they believe it strips him of power to "deadname" him with his birth name.

And then you have the pupinette deciding that Vox is like Trump. It's like she thinks it's a bad thing, and will convince us it's a bad thing too...
