Super Tuesday results

This is your open thread for posting them here and discussing them. It sounds like the only real question is if Cruz can hang onto Texas, but we'll see. The best live results site is Decision Desk.
The Lone Star State has the biggest cache -- 222 Democratic delegates and 155 for Republicans.

And perhaps no candidate is fighting harder for that prize than Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz. The senator went all out on Monday, holding rallies in voter-rich Dallas, Houston and San Antonio in hopes of at least defeating national front-runner Donald Trump in Cruz's home state.

“We are going to have a very good Super Tuesday,” Cruz assured the Dallas crowd. Cruz has maintained a polling lead in the state, but knows a surprise loss there could doom his campaign.

For Republicans, the second-biggest prize is Georgia, with 76 delegates at stake. Both Trump and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio put in face time with voters Monday in the final hours before polls open, while Cruz stayed rooted in Texas.

If you voted in the primary, feel free to mention what the general impression of your local polling place was.

UPDATE: Trump very nearly swept. They've now called Virginia, so Rubio isn't going to win anything. Cruz couldn't grab Oklahoma, but he did hang onto Texas.

My polling place had a lot of people who were anti-trump. Of course I live in an affluent part of town so the winners in life are going to be overrepresented.

The only Trump supporters I saw were old ugly white guys and their fat wives.

I cast my vote for Rubio.

Smaller turnout than I expected. I was in and out in no time. The lines (such as they were) were about 3 to 1 Republican over Democrat - which more or less jives with the turnout numbers in the other primaries so far.

I think that what killed Bernie was actually Trump. Polls show that the number 1 second choice for Bernie voters is actually Trump. And if you look at the turnout numbers, I think a lot of potential Bernie voters have crossed the aisle to vote for Trump instead. Part of the reason I expect a massive blowout in his favor in November.

Also, somebody on the Cruz campaign needs to get out and tear down those signs that are RIGHT ON the polling places. I saw them at at least two precincts on my way to work. It's a direct violation of state law.

Anonymous Instasetting March 01, 2016 12:52 PM

The local golf course, and I was second to vote in my county on SuperT (except for all those early voters).

Stood around with a few folk discussing politics, while not trying to discuss politics, on a cool, pleasant morning until the place opened at nine. No trouble of any sort, but in my neck of the woods, well, there is almost certainly more guns than people, so good manners are ordinary.

As long as Cruz crushes Rubio with the conservatives who can't stomach Trump, I'm happy. A strong conservative flank will be very handy to keep Trump from straying too far left on the social issues.

I've been thoroughly convinced by Vox and Ann and Pat on the primacy of immigration in the current issue stack, but I still want conservatives to have leverage over Trump with the social issues.

http://www.infowars.com/report-trump-supporters-in-texas-see-votes-switched-to-rubio/

People voting for Donald Trump in today’s Super Tuesday Texas Primary are seeing their ballots changed to show a vote for Marco Rubio.

Numerous callers flooded Austin-based radio station KLBJ this morning with reports of mistakes after they tried to vote for Trump.

According to KLBJ, “computer freezeups” and other “glitches” are causing voting snafus at locations all around Travis County.

Trump supporters previously accused the Rubio campaign of stealing votes in Iowa after the Florida Senator achieved a surprise third place finish.

Maybe I'm just missing something, but wouldn't it make more sense for him to make sure he hits threshold marks for other states? Or is he that worried about missing the 20% mark in Texas?

From what I have seen outside my circle of friends, Trump is doing extremely well. The more media and bloggers talk about how vile he is, the more they mobilize those that are sick of fat cats and status quo.

John Oliver released the Democrat playbook on Donald Trump the other day. It was pretty funny actually.

I am curious how Trump continues to handle this David Duke thing. I know it won't ever go away. The NYT report on Clinton's Trump strategy meeting states as much. He could lead a lynch mob to the guys house and string him up from a tree and he would still be called a racist. So there is no amount of repudiation that will satisfy. Having his surrogates running around seems to be the current strategy.

Voted in heavily high Spanic South Texas before lunch. In Texas one chooses which primary to vote at the polling place. Republican ballots outnumbered democrat by almost 3-1. My precinct is fairly typical mix of mostly middle class whites and mostly working class high Spanics. The 5 or 6 ppl in front of me were middle aged to senior, white, and one well turned out high Spanic lady.

It seems like the attempts to stick the raciss label on Trump have increased in the last couple of days. Most likely because Trump could actually draw significant numbers of blacks and latinos to vote for him in the general.

Blacks and Latins have no particular love for each other and you know what famous Latino leader was raciss against Latinos? Cesar Chavez! That's who!

. . . when the farm workers strike and their strike is successful, the employers go to Mexico and have unlimited, unrestricted use of illegal alien strikebreakers to break the strike. And, for over 30 years, the Immigration and Naturalization Service has looked the other way and assisted in the strikebreaking. I do not remember one single instance in 30 years where the Immigration Service has removed strikebreakers. . . .The employers use professional smugglers to recruit and transport human contraband across the Mexican border for the specific act of strikebreaking . . .

The David Duke thing is the usual shit:

Democrats pick the most outrageous example of "x" that surely EVERYONE can agree should be disavowed.

It isn't that anyone gives a shit about who David Duke votes for prez, it's about establishing the roles that the Democrat Party is the moral authority and Republicans/conservatives/everyone else needs to pay due deference to the gate keepers.

The correct answer is to mock the very idea, because people who support chopping up and selling baby parts and celebrating the destruction of their cultural heritage have no moral authority whatsoever.

A for my own: I live in one of the last hold-outs for white democrats in the south, and within that bubble I live on the frontier of gentrification, and so my precinct is about 3:1 ratio of low/no income blacks to college hipsters. I suspect Hilary carries my precinct by a landslide. But I voted at 7 am so it was very quiet.

The ladies behind the desk were very sweet though, and they still gave me a sticker and told me to have a nice day even when I checked the box to vote in the Republican primary.

As an aside, did Trump always use the "J" in his name? I don't recall every noticing it but I wasn't really a Trump person prior to this election. But it really makes his name pop out at you on the ballot as he's the only one with a middle initial, and I doubt that he did that accidentally.

Which would be a variation of Obama on his support from Farrakhan - him supporting me is not me supporting him - I can't stop people from liking me.

It's just the old Bill Kristol/Karl Rove bag of tricks - defining who and what is and is not acceptable and suitable for public consumption. Nothing like letting "the acceptable right" be defined by the son of a communist and an atheist.

Just got back from poll in central Alabama. My wife volunteers there, but was busy so didn't get to talk to her. Alabama is a cross over state so you sign the sheet for either the Republican or Democrat ballot and that is the one you get. I could see both sign up sheets and the Democrat sheet had three signatures on it, the Republican one had at least 30. Not sure what to make of that. Local radio states that there is a huge turnout.

Blogger Austin Ballast March 01, 2016 3:00 PM

Very few people in the poling places here in north Texas. The Democrat primary had an old lady and a young boy (likely 18). Empty, though I saw someone put in a Democrat ballot while I was waiting.

An older couple ahead of me along with 3 or so filling out their paper ballot. Definitely light turnout, though the early voting was supposed to be heavy.

I violated my party voting to stick a finger in the eye of the establishment. Fortunately I am not named Christina, so I could vote for the man who might possibly get something done rather than the establishment candidates (yes, I lump Cruz in there). I had voted for Cruz in his Senate run, but I am not impressed with him now. I trust the guy less than I trust Trump, and that is saying a lot.

I want to ask all the anti-Trump people who they want instead. But most people are just against something, not in favor of something.

Barone or somebody pointed out that the black vote was down 18%, but the white vote was down something like 40%. I bet it is more due to a lack of caring to participate in the coronation, but I hope its because whites have finally realized the Dem is the anti-white party.

That is some pretty serious Gamma.

Considering sociosexuality as a whole and voting patterns, my guess:

Alphas: Trump or Cruz.
Betas and Deltas: Mostly Trump. But Cruz will get the Churchians while Rubio gets the cucks.
Gammas: Mostly either Bernie or Rubio. Cruz if staunchly Christian. Hillary if they're married and their wives tell them to.
Omegas: Trump or Bernie, depending on political orientation. Or they'll vote whichever way their mom tells them to.

Anonymous GenXGal March 01, 2016 3:55 PM

Just voted for Trump in Alabama, where voters can choose either a Republican or Democrat ballot when arriving at the polling place. Based on signup sheets, the breakdown of voters so far (in that one particular polling place) was 82% Republican, 18% Democrat.

But that doesn't mean a whole lot, since my area doesn't have a lot of Democrats, which of course, is part of the reason we like it here.

Just voted in my heavily Republican area of Texas. Maybe half a dozen people, tops, were voting but it's the middle of the day. The polling place was at the food pantry of the catholic church. There were dozens of signs, but only 2 people who were waving signs for the hotly contested state representative and sheriff primaries. I usually don't vote but those two were important to me. No one spoke except the poll workers and as usual we have a paper ballot so no chance my votes got changed. Uncounted, perhaps, but not changed. Everyone was smiling and cheerful.

I know how 10 people have voted in my state so far and all 6 are in for Marco "R U BI?"

I still have to see if Biden runs to see if I will go on TV saying I was a former lover of RU BI or Biden's good/dead son. Democrats voted twice each and came out 2 short.

Going to bet some democrats crossed over to vote for Trump; you're not going to have many Hillary or Sanders voters out here regardless of what party they identify with.

I think the best Trump story I've seen was in Hot Air comments before they went full cuck. It was from a guy who was a failed musician in the late 80s who found himself broke on Nantucket. He bought a pack of raw hot dogs for supper and went to eat them on the waterfront. A guy grilling steaks saw him and offered to let him out his hot dogs on the grill.

He then "accidentally" knocked the hot dogs in the coals and offered one of his steaks to replace them. Then he ate with the dude, chatted with him, and shared his Heineken.

The guy didn't realize until later it was Donald Trump. (This was back in the 80s after all.)

This story came off as completely believable...I wish my Google-fu was up to finding it.

Just got back from voting. My main concern was local stuff (got a county commissioner that needs to go, for example).

I live in a rural area in Texas, so the democrat table had two lonely people manning it. During the 20 min I was there, not one person even went over to that table, much less voted in the Dem. Primary.

The Republican table had 4 people manning it. The 10 or so people I saw voting all took their ballot from the Republican side.

The handful of people standing around outside seemed pretty laid back. The only banner wavers were for the aforementioned county commissioner race. None for any state or federal level races.

Exit polls for GA, VA, and VT are out. They have Trump winning Georgia, but in a dead heat with Rubio in Virginia and Kasich in Vermont.

Furthermore, men are supporting Trump more than women. Which makes sense. Anecdotally, in my own family, that seems to be the case; men all for Trump, women sometimes hating him for no good reason.

Reason #2532 why women should not be allowed to vote.

We can always hope that some Trump voters didn't answer truthfully in the exit polls.

Looked at fivethirtyeight live coverage. Direct quote of what the narrative is.
The most interesting thing to me in the early exit polls (if you believe them, and you should be careful with them) is that Trump is really only ahead in Georgia. He’s at best tied in Vermont with Kasich and perhaps slightly ahead of Rubio in Virginia. He’ll do better in Alabama and Tennessee, based on pre-election polls, but I think the idea that Trump is running away with this thing isn’t self-evident. At least, not yet.
Tweets associated say Dems are voting on the Republican side. Some for Trump thinking they can beat him, some for Rubio because narrative.

Each congressional district gives 2 delegates to #1 and 1 to #2, and there are 36. So if he swept all the CDs, even with just a plurality, he would have 72 of 155 before counting the statewide proportional. So he has a very good chance of getting his first delegate majority of the eight needed to be presented as a candidate at the national convention.

I heard about that. Thought it was a protest against being proportional. They got made irrelevant as a side effect of national rigging things against a low-money momentum candidate like Paul or Cruz, so they refused to participate at all.

Rational in the sense of disincentivizing repetition of said shenanigans, but if they looked at other states, there were still ways of making it interesting while coloring inside the lines.
