SJWs retroconverging games

I saw that the Enhanced Editions of Baldur's Gate were on sale at Good Old Games and put them in my cart. However, in between that and clicking through to checkout, a tweet by Escape Velocity drew my attention to this interview with a writer at Beamdog concerning the expansion they'd created in the process of enhancing the original games.

And by "enhancing" them, of course, they mean "converging" them:
“If there was something for the original Baldur’s Gate that just doesn’t mesh for modern day gamers like the sexism, [we tried to address that],” said writer Amber Scott. “In the original there’s a lot of jokes at women’s expense. Or if not a lot, there’s a couple, like Safana was just a sex object in BG 1, and Jaheira was the nagging wife and that was played for comedy. We were able to say, ‘No, that’s not really the kind of story we want to make.’ In Siege of Dragonspear, Safana gets her own little storyline, she got a way better personality upgrade. If people don’t like that, then too bad.”

“I got to write a little tender, romance-y side quest for Khalid and Jaheira where you could learn a little bit about how their marriage works and how they really feel about each other.”

There’s also four new companions, one of whom is gay, one of whom is bisexual.
They loved the games so much they just needed to remake them in their own converged image. Consider this absurd example.

We don't like that. We won't play it. Too bad.

“I got to write a little tender, romance-y side quest for Khalid and Jaheira where you could learn a little bit about how their marriage works and how they really feel about each other.”

This might actually be fun if it's realistic:

"QUIT STUFFING YOUR FACE WITH CAKE, YOU FAT COW!"

Bonus content: Fuglicious legbeard Amber Scott.

She knows all about nonhuman romance, cos her boyfriend's a Hitatchi Magic Wand.

The SJWs and other Me-firsters demonstrate a level of narcissism that surpasses the original myth. But where Narcissus was content with his reflection pond, these people need everything to reflect their own twisted image. Fantasy based in a setting that would correlate with the West before 1960 shouldn't make openly homosexual/confused characters. It doesn't fit the setting. But they don't care, because everything needs to be in their image.

Speaking of such people, I'm off to direct the church choir. I'm sure to get more complaints about me using the good and old hymns that are based on Scripture and not the crappy muh feelz music of the 70's. It's always about them.

BG has been on the apple App Store for quite sometime. Had an awful bug that killed the game for more than a few. Is this an updated version to that? Thought the original iPad version was a faithful adaptation.

Blogger Cataline Sergius April 03, 2016 7:16 AM

Bleech! I didn't need that from Baldur's Gate.

Yes the world is crying out for SJW "enhanced" editions of classic games.

What the original Shadow Warrior needs is that Lo Wang, instead of being a sleazy ninja with a taste for hentai girls, is a celibate monk named Lu Shang, who gives little sermons on importance of Consent.

And really who needs all those rednecks in Redneck Rampage. That game would be so much better with a couple of hipster dudes with manbuns firing jokes at hillbillies who then shrink away ashamed and embarrassed about being so poor and regressive. What an FPS that would be!?!?!

Leisure Suit Larry, will of course, need the most work of all. But who wouldn't want a game where Larry seeks out and finds RESPECTFUL friendships with all of the many, many available genders of today's women. We'll get Zoe Quinn started on that one today.

I haven't gotten around to installing them yet, and now I'm wondering: The Baldur's Gate game in my library says "Original Edition" Is that the old, SJW-proof version?

OMG, like, I thought this game was so sexist, like, but honestly, there's only a couple sexist jokes like, so we fixed it anyway. Like OMG, Jaheira was the nagging wife; that's not true, ok, it's kinda true but you still can't make a game like that. This game was totally sexist but if we, like, saved the feelings of one 12 year old girl it was totally worth it.

Corporations like Disney (big surprise there) recently strong-armed the U.S. state of Georgia to back down its decision to ban creepy gay dudes wearing dresses from using womens (and girls of course( washrooms) just reinforces the URGENT NEED for the alt-right to develop a one-stop site of businesses that pushed the SJW agenda.

Anonymous Gen. Kong April 03, 2016 11:01 AM

By the way, if there are any authors here who've assigned their copyright or rights of publication to a converged publishing entity, you should be aware of an interesting provision in the US Copyright law (Title 17 USC), in a section entitled Termination of transfers and licenses granted by the author (Section 203). Unless you were foolish enough to assign your work to the enemy as a "work made for hire", note the provision in subsection 3:

Termination of the grant may be effected at any time during a period of five years beginning at the end of thirty-five years from the date of execution of the grant; or, if the grant covers the right of publication of the work, the period begins at the end of thirty-five years from the date of publication of the work under the grant or at the end of forty years from the date of execution of the grant, whichever term ends earlier.

The 5-year window to take your work back starts 35 years from date of contract or 35 years from publication date, whichever is earlier. Any work contracted or first published between 1978 and 1981 is eligible. Notice has to be sent in writing from the author or from the legal heirs of the author. The particular section applies to items contracted or published under the revised law (effective January 1, 1978) and only the work's status in the USA. There is a similar, more complicated provision for works contracted or published under the law in effect between 1909 and 1977 which has up to 3 such windows of opportunity.

I bought the games a while ago, that's how it seemed to me. The new characters they added were annoying, but the original game was all there. And I appreciated the new classes, items, and the ability to have things at full resolution without having all the icons and fonts be ridiculously small. But you can also just get the old game off of GOGs and get most of that stuff and more with the mods out there.

Blogger Krul April 03, 2016 11:06 AM

"Retroconverging", eh? Now what does that remind me of... oh yeah:

"Who controls the past controls the future; who controls the present controls the past." Ingsoc (Newspeak for English Socialism or the English Socialist Party) is the political ideology of the totalitarian government of Oceania in George Orwell's dystopian novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.

Anonymous Gen. Kong April 03, 2016 11:07 AM

BTW, such radical editing or modification of an author's work are likely a violation of the 'moral rights' provisions of other countries' copyright laws, though I am unsure of how many other countries have "work made for hire" provisions which are as easily and readily used as an opportunity to steal works by the usual suspects here in the Zombie-Banana Empire. 'Moral rights' a popular provision of EUSSR-okrug laws, are perpetual, at least to a degree.

Anonymous Gen. Kong April 03, 2016 11:12 AM

Anonymous Gen. Kong April 03, 2016 11:17 AM

For the USSA, the pertinent section of the copyright law is to be found in "Termination of transfers and licenses granted by the author" (Section 203). Subsection 3 in particular gives you the 5-year window.

"“I got to write a little tender, romance-y side quest for Khalid and Jaheira where you could learn a little bit about how their marriage works and how they really feel about each other.”"

Does this new quest make him an actual cuck more than the originals did? Khalid was a wuss for the most part, that was his character along with his druid wife who was bitchy and had more balls then him. In BG2 there was a hilarious scene early in the romance quest line with Aerie and Jaheira fighting over the player character. Aerie calls her a cold hearted bitch for flirting with the player so soon after Khalid dies.

If the tranny video shows what Beamdog has added for quality dialog... money saved there.

Somewhere between Baldur's Gate 2, and Neverwinter Nights, Bioware lost some key writers. They gradually managed to put a semblance of decent plotting back together for later games, but it was JARRING if you finished BG2 and then went to NWN.

Seriously. Neverwinter Nights, the original campaign? If you couldn't tell within ten minutes which NPC was out to screw you over, you shouldn't be allowed to manage your own money. It was that bad. The expansions (Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark) were better written, but still... faugh.

GOG is a part of CD Projekt, which also owns the developer of the Witcher games. These guys have told SJWs to pound sand in the past when they whined about fantasy medieval Central Europe not having enough mud people.

GOG is really good for 80s/90s era old school PC gamers. They have a lot of older titles that aren't even on Steam. The only change they make to the games is that they generally tie them to DOSBox so that you can easily run them on Windows 7 after purchase without spending a couple hours playing with compatibility settings.

Anonymous Red Comet April 03, 2016 1:29 PM

Forgot to mention it: I highly recommend their Ultima combo packs. You gets the games and scans of the original manuals, cloth maps, and most other paraphernalia that was in the original game boxes. I think the combo for 6, 7, and 8 also had some video interviews with Richard Garriot.

That article is a riot. I love how "a lot" of bad jokes is immediately backtracked to "well, at least a couple".

Safana? Who cares? She's like the 5th best thief in the game and you can play 10 times and only ever have her in the party for 5 min. She's a nonentity.

What about Shar-Teel? She's the best NPC fighter in the game. Or Branwen, the best NPC cleric (also a warrior.) And Jaheira is anything but comedy relief. Her battlecry is "For the fallen" which honors the dead and acknowledges our reliance on those who come before. She's fantastic.

Beamdog is knocking the game for things that are not problems. Why not fix the big problem: the fact that nothing you do matters in the game. Fallout 1 and 2 blow BG out of the water in this regard. Why focus on "sexism" where you can improve on the best thing modern RPG's have--consequences.

What makes this ludicrous is that it's Forgotten Realms, where gender-bending magic is available ( Hell, BG1 had the ogre's girdle, & BG2 had Edwin/Edwina). This was written SO INCREDIBLY LAZILY. That's why SJWs fail. They aren't even good propagandists. As John Wright would say, Beamdog is a disgrace to the forces of evil.

Not to mention that as Leox said, the complaints are lies (nagging wife is a small side of Jaheira's character) and ignore the loads of excellent female adventurers the game has.

Blogger jjc April 03, 2016 6:03 PM

OpenID denektenorsk April 03, 2016 7:02 PM

I can confirm that BioWare was starting to converge at 2009 and earlier. Given the various encounters you can have in their games I imagine that comes as no surprise.

VD you better not play "Borderlands The pre-sequel" where half the characters are either GAY or talk about their sexual life/relationships like half the time they are on-screen.

So it is complete message fiction vs fiction with a subtle message? Thanks for the warning. Unless they are hiring you to off their exs, I don't care who they bang with their pixelated genitalia. Why do the writers think I care?

"Detecting traps" I chuckled. If you recall it was Find and Remove Traps.

I'm confused... are we still talking about trannies? I.e. in a dark room you may not know what you are getting until the clothes come off. "It's a trap!"

A halfway decent game dev team has a much greater chance of capturing the market with good story.

I'm doing my part, but I'm a dev - not a salesman. Finding investment/VC is key or it moves at a part-time pace.

Edmonton is a hard place to keep good people. Seeing the sun at 1:00am in the middle of summer is kind of novel, but the novelty wears off fast when you have ~6 hours of daylight in the middle of winter and it's -40 degrees celcius out.

Anonymous Leox April 03, 2016 9:21 PM

Oh, yeah, and Imoen is both the best thief in the game AND arguably the best mage in the game. A party of all BG women is better powergaming-wise than a party of all BG men.

As a bonus, Imoen constantly says "You're a queer little one." Having LGBTQ NPC's is nothing compared to forcing LGBTQ player!

There is also the boilerplate FR "Women of the realms can succeed in every endeavor just as well as a man, be it combat, magic, or diplomacy" that is shown during char gen.

To call BG sexist is to blatantly lie to push an agenda. My goodness.

If anything, it is sexist against men. The best male warrior is mentally handicapped, the best male mage is evil and insane, the best male thief is a layabout and a cad. Kivan is the male Safana. Only one male character is a standup virtuous guy worth emulating, whereas Branwen, Jaheira, Dynaheir, and perhaps Imoen are all fine female role models.

--Insert tone-deaf "social enhancements" to signify your virtue to the world and to justify your job
--Wonder why consumers mock you and sales are flat.

Sounds like most comic book-based movies put out in the last decade.

If you think the movies are bad, you should see the actual comics lately

Vox,

I recall you mentioned being a fan of Warlords.
I found this beta based off of Warlords Battle Cry 3 and been playing it like a fiend for days now. It's apparently made by the same team and everything.

I've never played Baldur's Gate in any form, converged or not. Is it a good game? If so, can anyone point me to where I could get a non-SJW version?

Zaklog:

Yes, it is excellent. A very faithful adaptation of the 2nd ed AD&D ruleset to the PC. Good story, good characters, a large area to explore; it is my favorite CRPG. This link is to the original game, untouched by Beamdog.
