Stop! Puppy Time!

If you can get away, work at home, or have a sufficiently relaxed employer, don't hesitate to join us at the Rabid Puppy Hugo Nomination Party, being held at Brainstorm today. The Party kicks off at 12:30 Eastern; the shortlist announcements are scheduled to start at 1 PM. Everyone is invited, so register here if you want to join the party.

Considering that we had a great time being No Awarded last August, I can guarantee that we'll have a good time whether we sweep the whole damn thing or we are skunked. I've already got a very good bottle of red wine awaiting the ritual uncorking, so you may want to contemplate your own libationary strategy.

Also, if you happen to see the vote totals being reported, please write them down.

Sangria then bourbon?

I already drank at work in celebration. That way if we lose, I'll black out on the sidewalk instead of getting all weepy in public. I hope that's not prohibited. I really need to read the employee handbook someday.

Do NOT chase bourbon with sangria. No. Just no. I don't care how bad the bourbon is. Finish with bourbon. If Rabid Puppies accomplishes nothing but to convince you to finish with bourbon, then I will be satisfied.

What bourbon?

To be honest, I merely drained a $5 bottle of celebratory La Marca during a late at-work breakfast. I doubt I'll black out, or weep, but I will accept victory or defeat in the exact same manner: with piercing, infectious, maniacal laughter.

Next thing I knew, Drover said, "What would you do if we peed on your tires?"
The boxer's head came up real slow, and he turned them wicked eyes on little Drover. "What did you say?"
"I said, what would you do if we peed on your tires?"
"Uh, Drover..." It made me a little uneasy, the way he was talking about we.
The boxer sat up. "I'd tear off your legs and wring your neck."
"But how could you do that when you're chained up?"
"Drover."
The boxer lifted one side of his mouth and unveiled a set of long white teeth. "I'd bust the chain."
"It looks pretty stout to me."
"Drover."
"It ain't stout enough."
"Just curious," said Drover. Big-and-Ugly went back to sleep and I got back to them flies. One of them was big and green, also a little slow on the draw. I waited for my shot and snapped. Got the little booger! Then I had to spit him out real quick. Boy, did he taste foul.
Seemed to me I heard water running somewhere. I glanced around and saw Big-and-Ugly's head come up. He'd heard it too.
Drover had just wiped out the left rear tire and was going toward the front one. Seemed to me this was poor judgment on Drover's part.
The boxer sprang to his feet. "Get away from that tire, runt! No two-bit cowdog is going to mess up my tires!"
I didn't like his tone of voice. I got up and wandered to the side of the pickup. "Say there, partner, maybe I didn't hear you right. You weren't suggesting that there's any two-bit cowdogs around here, were you?"
"I ain't suggesting, Buddy, I'm saying. You're a couple of two-bit cowdogs."
"Do you mean that as an insult or a compliment?"
"Cowdog, don't mean but one thing to me: sorry and two-bit."
I took a deep breath. "Oh dear. Drover, the dust seems kind of bad all of a sudden. Why don't you wet down that other tire."
He grinned, hiked up his leg, and let 'er rip.
The boxer went nuts when he saw that. All at once his fangs were flashing in the sunlight. He lunged against that chain and started barking - big, deep roar of a bark, so loud you could feel it bouncing off your face.
I waited for him to shut up. "You want to take back what you said about cowdogs?" He lunged against the chain and slashed the air about six inches from the end of my nose. "Guess not."
I hopped down, skipped around to the right side of the boxer's pickup, and wiped out the front and back tires. Drover and I met at the front, swapped sides, and gave each tire a second coat.
Big-and-Ugly went berserk. He fought against the chain and roared. "Let me at 'em, I'll kill 'em, just let me at 'em!"
Drover and I finished the job and hopped back into the pickup bed.

Best part is that it will be next to impossible to ignore "Fandom's" relationship with paedophilia this year.

Blogger Marc DuQuesne April 26, 2016 2:31 PM

The combined puppies slate swept most categories completely.
Non-Puppy noms, 1 in Best Novel, 1 in DP Short Form, 1 Fan artist, 1 Semi-Pro Zine, and several editors.

If the CHORFs stay the course or double down, there will be a lot of No Awards at the Hugo Ceremony, and EPH will pass the business meeting.

Blogger slarrow April 26, 2016 2:39 PM

Magnificently done. This is what it looks like when Vox games the awards. Space Raptor Butt Invasion is especially brilliant. Not only does it draw the eye like a house on fire, it's evidence of the strength of the Rabid Puppies ballot discipline. Last year, they attacked Sad Puppies and tried to tar them with the Rabids as a way to drive a wedge in between the groups. This particular nomination shows that the Rabid Puppies are the real player. They'll have to train their fire on RP, and rabid puppies bite back. Hard. All the Sads need to do is pop popcorn and say, "take it up with them."

The additional beauty of the SRBI gambit is that media types will inevitably seek out Vox for the scandal, and he can then hit them over the head with the Best Related Work nominations. Better work on your "ummms", Vox.

My suggestion for the title of the summary post is, "How do you like me now?" I wonder if the people who voted VD 6 out of 5 are still gloating. Short term thinking will bite you.

Just beautiful.

. So he was almost half an hour early. But not almost 3 hours early. I'm sure there were written versions of the nominees available when the official announcements started though.

There isn't supposed to be.

The nominees are informed and sworn to secrecy in advance but nothing is supposed to be public prior to the general announcement.

Not that we didn't see this last year.

Toadina of Tor was screaming her head off about the nominations the weekend before the nominations were public.

Now that could have just been people who were expecting to be nominated going to Theresa and saying, "hey, I didn't hear anything and you promised it was my turn this year."

Shes a SMOF, so that could be "innocent" Damien Walter sure as fuck is not a SMOF nor would either he or Scalzi have had a clue about who was on the down-ballot.

Yet they both knew.

And they knew well enough in advance to get their narratives in sync.

Rot reveals itself by it's distinctive smell and boy does this smell.

I'm not sure how the Rabid Puppies managed so well this year. We know there are only in the range of 500 VFM's. With over 3000 votes in the the Best Novel category and over 2000 in many others, I can only assume that we had a large influx of previously non-rabid voters who deliberately sided with the Rabid Puppies this year.

@108,

I remember Chaos Horizon saying that nominees tend to get between 15 and 25% of the ballots for a category. 500-600 RPs is enough to capture that margin, especially in the categories of 2k or less. Now, if all 4000 voted in each category, there would be enough votes to shout down both RP and SP. The Puppy-Kickers shouldn't be pointing fingers at us, but at the 1000 to 3000 voters who did not vote in each category. Without those people sitting on the sidelines, a RP victory would have been improbable, if not impossible.

Or... OR!... maybe Vox's picks just happened to be the most awesome nominees and they were chosen by non-puppy voters on pure merit. (Chuck Tingle, I'm looking at you)

Just read Scalzi's insider narrative. Scalzi, whose two best books are a Heinlein ripoff and a Star Trek joke book, complains of front runners leading the parade.

SJWs always double down. I see he finds all of this "amusing."

Wait until the final ballots are cast! He will be more amused than when he was raping!

The great thing about the new rules if they pass is that they concede a novel nomination to us...possibly two...right out the gate.

Anonymous Headcannon April 26, 2016 5:27 PM

Jessica Jones on there instead of Daredevil.

Gross.

Somewhither and all the video games not making it are the big disappointments here. Otherwise a great showing.

It's still unlikely to produce an award, even if the non-Puppy vote is split amongst the other four nominations because of the elimination process. Unless the RP nomination can garner a lot of non-Puppy support on the final ballot, it's still going to fall short.

They're still going to consider that RP nominee as the unwanted guest at the table, tolerated but ignored.

We need clear orders:

Does this mean we buy Mid America Con memberships?

You should have already.  I did, and voted.

Oh. My. I was Sad last year, but decided Rabid was the proper answer to PNH and Gerrold's treatment of Toni Weisskopf and Mrs. Wright, not to mention the No Awards. It looks like I'm not the only one.

Lots of us were using voting memberships from last year. Voting this year will cost extra, and there's a question if we want to send more money to the Hugos or not.

Perhaps there is yet another species of dark followers yet to named and placed on the infernal taxonomy? Yet they heeded the call...

I just realized that because of Swirsky's If You Were a Dinosaur, My Love, where the dinosaur is a symbol of ever non-white race on the planet...

...that Space Raptor Butt Invasion is not only not homophobic, but it is not sexist or racist either.

One story ran the SJWs through their repertoire.

I have it on good authority that we're Soros-like bought votes.

So I'm waiting on my check in the mail.

The tasty tasty salt of mindless raging SJW tards as they spew buzzwords stereotypically, a nice soundtrack for basking in the glory of Making the Hugos Great Again.

I, too, await the check in the mail.

Yes, the directive was to use the last year's membership until at least this day. I'm sure there will be direction.

It looks like there is no time limit yet on this one, as they are still a bit hazy about when the voting starts saying "there will be an announcement mid May" on the Hugo blog.

I hope they simply cancel the voting and make it juried provided Chuck Tingle has a lifetime appointment to the jury.

Not all of us are numbered. Some remain below the Supreme Dark Lord's notice, and some are independent contractors. None know the true number we have.

And thus some more clarity on how the TORlings were gaming the system. Odds are, pre-puppy, most voters were either not nominating all categories or were not using all of their nomination slots per category. That would have made it fairly easy to make sure your ringer slips onto the ballot with a minimal number of votes.

Once the final ballot is made its much easier to lobby/lightly push less dedicated voters towards a particular work on the finalist list.

Anonymous zeonxavier April 26, 2016 6:32 PM

If Castalia is generous with the Hugo voter packet, I might spring for a voting membership this year.

Last year I'd spent my book money already, and owned copies of most of the nominees that interested me.

Blogger Rantor April 26, 2016 7:00 PM

Castalia House, Brian Niemeyer, all successful Rabid nominees, rework your cover artwork with a bright colored ribbon announcing your Hugo nomination. Think of the sales effect that will have! Think of how irritated the moaning hoards of SJW fandom will feel, hatred driving acid into their throats, reaching for a Nexium and finding they need a refill. Leaving the book store to find a soda machine to wash the bitter taste from the back of their mouth...

If puppies can't sweep the nomination then they will block vote the non-puppy noms

Anonymous Man of the Atom April 26, 2016 7:46 PM

Once again, the CHORFs can't maintain voting discipline to block the 'Puppies, much less push the SFF they prefer.

Note: Only 500 people to disrupt a group that seems to max-out on 4000 for nominators and 8000 for 'con voters.

These people (the CHORFs and PedoFiles) are Dead Men Walking.

Ah, the LULZ! Raptors, and Ponies, and Pedos! Oh MY!

Congrats, Vox! Smartly done, Ilk & Minions alike!

Will EPH work as they plan when the total non-Puppies in a category is less than the number of Puppies?

Blogger Michael Maier April 26, 2016 9:16 PM

The MORON Sad Puppies put the SJW-Virtue-Signaling-Fest that was Epi 7 onto the ballot?

They should all have their genitals ripped off with pliers.

Anonymous WaterBoy April 26, 2016 9:35 PM

Nathan: "Will EPH work as they plan when the total non-Puppies in a category is less than the number of Puppies? "

Not unless they don't split their votes across the five (or four of six) nomination slots, while the Puppies do.

The idea of EPH is to lessen the impact of a single voter who votes a complete slate, while maximizing the impact of a voter who has but a single favorite to nominate.

When you aggregate these, you require fewer of the latter to overcome a large number of the former.

Anonymous Nathan April 26, 2016 10:11 PM

True, but I'm also considering the general apathy at the nominations each year. With 4000 or so ballots cast for the nominations, most categories got between 1000 and 2400 ballots. That's pretty anemic, especially since everyone's afraid of slates and campaigning and everything real awards actually allow. I'm expecting an even greater complacency once EPH passes.

Blogger Brian Niemeier April 27, 2016 4:38 AM

Rantor: thanks for the advice. I'll definitely be putting the Campbell nom on the covers.

Along with an even more profitable addition...
