Do try to keep up

George Martin and the SF-SJWs are a bit downcast at the belated discovery that E Pluribus Hugo is going to work about as well as relying upon one recommended individual per category withdraw after being nominated:
Over the past few months, I've read countless variations of the statement that goes, "well, this is the last year we will have a problem, come summer we'll pass EPH and all will be fine." I had my doubts about that every time I heard it, and this new report just confirms them. We may indeed pass EPH, and it may help... a little... but all will not be fine.

We may pass 4/6 too, and that could also help... slightly... but it's easily thwarted, if you have hundreds of followers who will do exactly as you tell them, and the Rabids seem to have just that.

If EPH and 4/6, or both, are passed at MidAmericon II, and work more-or-less as advertised, the slates will no longer be able to completely dominate entire categories by taking all five slots. The reforms should ensure that there are at least one or two legitimate nominees in every category. Which is better, certainly, than what has happened to Best Related Work the past two ballots, say. But it is still far from ideal. Future ballots will instead look more like last year's Best Novelette, Best Professional Artist, and Best Fan Writer shortlists, or this year's Best Fan Artist, all of which featured one legit choice and four slate candidates. Maybe we'd see some improvement in some categories, and have two finalists to choose between.

Better than what we have now? Sure. But comparable to being able to choose among five strong candidates to decide which one was the very best of the year? Not even close.

I can hear the proponents of EPH and 4/6 saying their reforms were never meant to be a cure all. Yes, I know that, I never believed otherwise, and I applaud your efforts to help. I just wish these reforms helped more. Neither EPH nor 4/6 is going to prevent us from having VD on the Best Editor shortlist from now until the heat death of the universe.
This is evidence in itself of the decline of science fiction. The "beardy middle-aged middle-Americans" of the sort that NK Jemisin decried had sufficient math to see this coming. What passes for today's "science fiction" writers, not so much.

If they think they're tired and demoralized now, well, just wait. The Rabid Puppies haven't even begun to exhaust their tactical arsenal.

"legitimate nominees"

I just love this part, it's the whole "only certain people/certain politically correct works should be allowed to be nominated" summed up in 2 words by one of the biggest authors on the planet. Because fuck what fans want, I don't like it because it doesn't have enough tranies and thus it doesn't count!

The comments at his blog made me giggle.

None of them seems to able to grasp that the simplest way to make us stop is to just vote the slate without making a fuss.

We'll get bored and wander off. As it is they have long since proven Larry Correia's original point. Now I'm only in it for the entertainment value.

Blogger tz May 16, 2016 8:18 PM

Bach, Handel, Mozart, Haydin, Beethoven, and Schubert are past.

I can only look back at what might have been a golden age of Sci-Fi and Fantasy with Lewis and Tolkien as the Bach era, and Niven, Asimov, Clarke, Pournelle and a few others as Mozart, with a few Beethovens - maybe Piers Anthony, Terry Goodkind - years ago.

The dreck that is published now is at best DeBussy or at worst Schoenberg. Or PDQ Bach (one Supernatural episode involved Hoople, ND).

Yet even today there are the Grammys, and the narrower awards for music that will be all but forgotten by our grandchildren.

We do not care to light a bonfire, a beacon to summon the Roherim, but obsess about whether the dim, faultering flame is colored more pink or blue.

The glory has departed. We argue over dying embers, yet those who extinguished the fire insist that something cold, dark, and black yet glows. But it is important to distinguish between a flame which can ignite something more, and an ember that will fade into the dark.

What amazes me (but it shouldn't have) is that they didn't immediately see how EPH and 4/6 could be gamed. When I read them, I knew how to work it. It was blindingly obvious.

It shouldn't have amazed me because I've been dealing with liberals in theology since the mid 90s. They can't put two and two together there either. JEDP for instance is based on the premise that a single person never uses more than one name for God. Except when he does. Yes, according to their theory, there are places where E uses YHWH and J uses Elohim. By their own admission, the driving force behind the hypothesis does not hold!

And they're okay with this.

You and I would say, "Okay. Hypothesis fails. Record it and move on." Not them. Because it conflicts with their axiom, the data must be made to fit and exceptions must be enumerated.

Perfect timing with my thoughts. This 58 year old female has been appreciating Vox Day's historical and general intelligence since 2001. I don't read science fiction; I don't understand all the particulars of what they are doing. But SJW bullies have damaged (or completely ruined) most areas of modern American life. Well in Clay's defense, sometimes reading about the all the different ways that the SJWs of SciFi shoot them selves in the foot can become almost like watching a Nerd Jersey Shore. I could see someone just cringing and going "Please...make it stop."

However, Science fiction is important to me and I believe it is important to the US and the world. I sure as hell don't want to see the future having a GD gatekeeper on it, so it's important to keep on top of what is going on.

Yes, there sure should have been. There should also have been plenty of good markets for John C. Wright's short fiction; instead, he had enough previously unpublished works to publish through Castalia House in 2014 to earn him more than the record-setting five Hugo nominations that he received.

GRRM is hardly being straightforward and honest in his comments vs Matthew and Marc Aramini either. For instance, the book should apparently have been submitted to every publisher in the universe (in sequence, of course) before Castalia. Otherwise ... how can we be absolutely certain that nobody else would have published this tome? I'm sure Aramini is happy that GRRM doesn't work as an agent.

Also interesting to see that some SJWs so openly confirm the charges against them.

Yagathai: "I have not read Between Light and Shadow. I do not plan to. I will nevertheless vote against it. Castalia House is the propaganda organ of an odious white supremacist and obscene misogynist, and I will fight to deny it even a breath of legitimacy.

That may not be all Castalia is. It may also publish serious works of scholarship, but that's immaterial -- lay down with puppies and you get fleas. Any work published by CH is tainted.

You can call this a "political reason" if you like. I don't. I see it as a matter of common decency."

I had to guffaw at that closing sentence. I'm sure common decency has played a great, nay defining, role in that commenter's life.

Anonymous Whee May 17, 2016 3:06 AM

What they are hiding is a lot of self-nominations. Screaming about Vox's self-noms while dozens upon dozens of ballots are self-noms and that's why they are incomplete would produce some interesting results among the anti-puppies.

I missed the day they taught the new quotation method around here. Care to enlighten a fellow poster?

Well, it only works on the desktop version, but you just click on the number of the comment and then copy it to the clipboard, where it comes complete with various tags. Then paste and Bob's your uncle.

At least Vox Day wins over GRRM in that one could ask Vox about the expected publication date of his next book, and he does not get angry, but answer in a very timely fashion.

O Dark Lord, will you be giving us a list (not a slate, of course) of your favorite nominees, a list that, it should go without saying, is not recommended for voting by the VFM or Dread Ilk?

Of course. But first, the Hugo Packet must be released, works must be read, and dark thoughts must be contemplated.

I think Carly said it best.

Scintan, you can also manually trigger the quoting styles by wrapping the text in two tags: I and EM. (Blogger forbids the BLOCKQUOTE tag, so I had to get clever) Like this:

<i><em>Heaving Bosoms</em></i>

Some of the works can already be voted on, because they are either all in There Will Be War Vol 10 or on the web etc.

I love cats, but it is difficult to find others with whom to trade recipes.

@83 These are the people who think Big Gov't (or the Federation) can step in and save the day.

I heard John McCain on the radio once explaining how part of the system worked regarding his pet project campaign finance reform. You passed legislation but never something that would completely solve the problem. Then when someone exploited what you had "missed" you patched it with more legislation, also imperfect for the problem at hand. Lather, rinse, repeat. "That way, you get to be a hero again."

I was stunned that he admitted it.

Dude. That's a hell of a thing to admit in a public forum.
