Even Hollywood can be further converged

Who knew that SJWs could make it even worse than it was? Milo observes that the feminist Ghostbusters is going to be an SJW-inspired disaster:
At this point, everyone who isn’t a Women’s Studies major realises that Ghostbusters is probably going to be a terrible movie. But who’s responsible? To anyone familiar with incompetence in Hollywood, the answer should be obvious. It’s Amy Pascal, of course.

Pascal is the former chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment. She oversaw production of dozens of blockbuster titles over the years, until she was hoist on her own progressivism. A series of  embarrassing emails in which she cracked some not-funny racial jokes about President Obama clashed with her public image as a good feminist progressive, and Pascal promptly exited the company.

“Should I ask him if he liked DJANGO?” asked Pascal in a leaked email to a colleague on the topic of meeting President Barack Obama at a then-upcoming fundraising event. Her colleague, producer Scott Rudin, replied simply with “12 YEARS”, referencing ’12 Years a Slave’: another slavery film.

The two then proceeded to jokingly list numerous films concerning African-Americans. It wasn’t funny, and, considering Pascal’s public image as a Hollywood feminist, it wasn’t clever either. It was this series of emails among others that resulted in Pascal’s forced resignation from Sony.

But cinema still isn’t safe: Pascal is taking a producer role in a handful of upcoming films, including Ghostbusters. Pascal, SJW-watchers will note, is the producer behind the mooted Zoe Quinn biopic Crash Override: How to Save the Internet from Itself, which I’m sure will be at least as successful as the all-female Ghostbusters. (By which I mean: an utter disaster.)

It’s obvious Pascal is trying to recover her progressive credentials. But her movies are visibly suffering as a result.

Despite her self-proclaimed feminist values, Pascal has proven hilariously bad at pandering to her own tribe. After allegations of a pay gap at Sony, Pascal was quick to offer a tone-deaf rebuttal.

“I run a business. People want to work for less money, I’ll pay them less money. I don’t call them up and go, can I give you some more?” said Pascal in an interview at the Women of the World event in San Francisco. Pascal said actresses should learn to “walk away” if they weren’t satisfied with their jobs. “People shouldn’t be so grateful for jobs,” she said.

In a final, desperate attempt to make herself likeable again, Pascal is now producing rancid films dressed up in social justice-friendly narratives. And it’s working! Progressives are rallying to her defence, crying “MISOGYNY” whenever moviegoers object to the garbage Pascal is trying to feed them....

I suspect the film’s defenders are also aware that the movie is an impending disaster, which is why they’ve rushed to the web to brand its critics misogynists. There’s a lot on the line for them. If Ghostbusters flops, it will be yet further proof that feminism and social justice don’t sell.
Addendum to Veblen. We're going to need a new theory to account for this new form of virtue-signaling conspicuous consumption.

There aren't enough blue-haired legbeards, fat girls with septum piercings, or manjawed problem glasses wearers with "MALE TEARS" mugs in the world to make GHOSTBUSTERS 3 : BITCHIN IN THE KITCHEN a success.

And how the fuck do you make a big budget movie with four female leads - and *all* of them are dogs? Was it cast by Stevie Wonder?

The kerfuffle surrounding the Ghostbusters reboot obscures the larger point that Hollywood is out of ideas, reflecting a long spiritual drought not likely to get better anytime soon absent war, bloodshed, or like fertilizer of the creative soul.

All I need to know about the new Ghostbusters comes straight from YouTube: the official trailer.
No need to watch it (or that ad) just look at the upvotes (230,902) vs. the downvotes (732,290).
It's been consistently at least 2-1 thumbs down. I doubt even heavy marketing, cross-promotion and nostalgia is going to make this a hit. The original had likeable characters, this one...

Blogger tz May 06, 2016 5:17 AM

New theory? How about the law of imply and demand? The greater the implication that the purchase of a particular good or service indicates SJW status/virtue, the greater the likelihood that SJW's will claim to purchase it for an unrelated virtue?

One cannot admit to anything as gauche as virtue signaling after all, SJW's support Bernie 'cause he's so smart, you see.

Blogger totenhenchen May 06, 2016 6:15 AM

We're going to need a new theory to account for this new form of virtue-signaling conspicuous consumption.

I don't know about a theory, but we could call it a "vritue panic" since it's an inversion of the sort of panic that causes bank runs combined with the frantic moral signalling SJWs engage in.

Anonymous BB753 May 06, 2016 6:17 AM

The film might turn out to be funny in an ironic, unintentional way. So bad it's good. Who knows?
As for the "racist" email exchange, even obnoxious SJW lezzies should be able to make use of their right to free speech and confidentiality of their communications. It was also pretty harmless. Though it feels good to see liberals hoisted on their own petard.

Blogger Stilicho May 06, 2016 6:28 AM

Alternative law: the price an SJW is willing to pay for a vitue-signaling good or service is inversely proportional to the actual quality of such good or service.

SJW's always lie, therefore it is only natural for them to believe that a bigger lie is better even when lying to themselves. See also, rule 2.

OpenID basementhomebrewer May 06, 2016 6:29 AM

I actually watched the trailer and it looks awful. The one thing that really stands out is they feel they have to tell the viewer how smart and capable the women are. In the originals no one said "Egon is the bestest scientist evah!" The watcher gathered that he was smart from context.

Blogger Ahazuerus May 06, 2016 6:31 AM

@Gapeseed:

"like fertilizer of the creative soul"

Soil? Mixed metaphor? Smashed simile?

Anyway, the thing about GhostTingles: Sisters are Doing for Themselves, is that when it flops horribly (as it must) the SJWs will take this as proof positive of the endemic misogyny of the West. After all, it will be [current year] and 4 ugly fat talentless females still cannot garner global fame and fortune.

The counter-argument, that people just don't like shit, will not impress them.

Given that SJWs always Double Down, I fully expect us to be drowned in a flood of epically crapulent garbage virtue signalling paeans for years to come, until such time as one of them makes a profit.

The trick, as ever, will be distinguishing this filth from the standard Hollywood fare.

OpenID basementhomebrewer May 06, 2016 6:37 AM

The counter-argument, that people just don't like shit, will not impress them.

Anonymous NorthernHamlet May 06, 2016 7:51 AM

Take a moment and imagine it...

For the first time you see the original Ghostbusters cast standing tall against a background of haze and smoke on a city street. You know the image im talking about.

These guys looked heroic AND they had the right mix of goofy personalities to show they weren't taking themselves too seriously. That was their strength.

Compare the new recreated shots for this upcoming movie. There's the token black and the token fat. They try to strike the same tone as the originals. But they ARE taking themselves too seriously and we know it.

Their agenda cannot be mocked, cannot criticized, cannot be laughed at. That's not the Ghostbusters. That's sad.

It really is the difference between bitterness and confidence.

Blogger Cataline Sergius May 06, 2016 7:53 AM

Okay basic premise of the original was lovable losers make it big, then lose everything and then save the day. There was a sequel that wasn't as good that repeated everything and added a "we're getting the band back together" theme. It also added thirty pounds to Dan Aykroyd.

This franchise has been sitting dead on the shelf for decades largely for one reason. There wasn't enough money in the world to make Bill Murray spend weeks covered in slime trying to be funny in front of a green screen.

Then Harold Ramis died and interest in the project faded completely.

OR DID IT?

Clearly it could not. Not did not, could not.

The original Ghostbusters made Three hundred million on a thirty million dollar budget back in 1984. In modern numbers this would be about a billion dollars. The sequal didn't do nearly as well. And as I said Bill Murray wasn't just done with it, he was fucking done with it.

Now a lot this was just lightening in a bottle. They can't recreate the circumstances that made that one great. Certainly no one in the new cast has that kind of talent. But when paired with director Paul Feig, Jenny McCarthy's Unattractive Cousin reliably pulls in 200 million a movie, (fat chicks travel in herds and go to movies).

Brand recognition on top that could in theory add between 50 to 100 million. They don't appear to have broken the bank making it so call the budget 70 million. They won't make blockbuster money but they could easily be in the black.

Provided anyone goes to see it.

Which now looks doubtful.

The first time I saw that awful trailer, I laughed - I was sure it was a joke. Wouldn't it be cool if this was a huge publicity stunt. Suppose Sony made a reboot that was OK, but not as great as the original. Given the harder publicity mountain movies have to climb today, that would create a problem. So they roll out a completely false and completely terrible false trailer to generate buzz. Then encourage people to go crazy. Then, when the craze hits peak, the ol' switcheroo!

Yeah, I don't buy it either. But that trailer is so terrible as to be unbelievable to me - and it makes me wonder.

OpenID frankluke May 06, 2016 10:14 AM

I watched the trailer twice. The second time to assure myself that the first time hadn't been a fevered nightmare inspired by 10 o'clock nachos with too much salsa. I wish it had been.

The first thing that annoyed me in the trailer was how it implied it was a sequel (30 years ago... then a GB logo), but as I watched, I realized it was a reboot. They were trying to hit the same jokes (oh, look, GB had an old ambulance. We'll have an antique hearse! CREATIVE!)

I watched the first two about a month ago (had never seen GB2, wish I had those hours back). Watching GB, I knew this time that the writers must have been yuge HP Lovecraft fans (Egon's library esoterica, a cult trying to bring in an otherworldly horror, I noted several other elements when viewing). I was even thinking how, in the hands of the right Keeper, a Ghostbusters CoC campaign could rock!

New theory? How about the law of imply and demand? The greater the implication that the purchase of a particular good or service indicates SJW status/virtue, the greater the likelihood that SJW's will claim to purchase it for an unrelated virtue?

Perfect.

So, the question becomes: are individual implication curves stackable as an aggregate implication curve? I tend to think no, due to the rampant reflexivity in moral signaling markets. This makes equilibria analysis particularly suspect and explains why, despite the academic models, Black Manatee events like Trigglypuff keep happening at alarming rates.

It's also apparent the virtue signaling happens *before* the virtue is established, rather than vice-versa as traditional model of implication/virtue signaling has it. Astoundingly, Neomarxistical SJWs simply assume virtue doesn't exist.

Wasn't going to comment. Wasn't going to view the trailer. The imp of the perverse intervened. From the comments, this touching story-

My Grandfather was a chain-smoker from the age of 16. I was only 13 years old when my mother said to him, 'If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.' He gave it up immediately when he realized what was at stake. Three years later he died of lung cancer when I was still a junior in high school. He never got to see me graduate. His death absolutely destroyed me. Since then, I made a vow to never touch a cigarette. But none of that matters, because this trailer gave me cancer anyway.

Me thinks the SJW exposed himself a bit with this line about the villain, "get revenge on everyone who slighted him, humiliate and take down Wall Street, make the United States look ridiculous to the rest of the world and eventually destroy NYC, which to him is the brain of the US."

He goes on to talk about this franchise including the billion dollar idea of adding in alien ghosts from other planets.

The original Ghostbusters wasn't trying to market to mainstream women (as in not a feminist, none of the dysfunction you find in SJWs). It had the demographic you'd expect for a Dan Aykroyd led movie. SJW Ghostbusters is a transparent signalling project that lacks appeal to either the demographic who'd watch the original or mainstream women. And yes, it goes back to how repellent the lead actresses are.

Go look up the bulk of visual works, toys, magazines, and romantic novels directed at girls or women that actually have mainstream appeal (as in not social media feminists and manginas). I'm talking Barbie, Cosmopolitan, Japanese series like Sailor Moon. They have a habit of featuring glamorous, supermodel (or built like a supermodel) leads or poster girls. Women by large don't dig fatties or a Jessica Valenti brand horse-face in their works as leads or poster girls. I'm sure Chris Hemsworth's role as the secretary is really there to draw in mainstream women since the lead actresses are so repellent.
