Good rhetoric in action

To show how really good rhetoric works, notice how it can be summoned and utilized in a variety of ways to instantly shut down any rhetorical sally from the target.
Elizabeth Warren@elizabethforma
@realDonaldTrump: Your policies are dangerous. Your words are reckless. Your record is embarrassing. And your free ride is over.

John Cardillo ‏@johncardillo
Next Fauxcahontas will tell us that #Trump corrupted her people with Whiskey and rifles.
KABOOM! That's the effect you are looking for. Notice that there is no attempt whatsoever to respond to the dialectical aspects of the sally, nor is one needed.

I thought her Indian name was Liawatha.

BTW, I was reading A PRINCESS OF MARS recently and the Apache are depicted as torture-loving savages. Which is probably accurate from the point of view of white men who ran afoul of them, if rather jarring to those of us brought up on post-1960's media diet of Red Indians as wise, mystical, tree-hugging proto-liberals who may even have magical powers.

If Edgar Rice Burroughs was alive today he wouldn't get nominated for a Hugo without the Supreme Dark Lord's non-binding non-command to that effect.

I never associated any of the Martians with American Indians, although I did think of the Green Martians as Orcs.

The more "problematic" aspect of Burroughs is the fact his protagonists get women, whether the Alpha John Carter or the Beta/high Delta Hadron of Hastor.

Fauxcahontas's attempt at TrumpStumping...

Your policies are dangerous. Your words are reckless. Your record is embarrassing. And your free ride is over.

...is like being savaged by a dead sheep.

First of all, she looks and sounds like a sour, dried up old schoolmarm.

So Hillary using Warren as her chief flying attack-monkey, then trying to out-Alpha the world's greatest Twitter troll - on a platform that he dominates so completely it has his name tatooed on its left buttock - was doomed from the start.

Marshall McLuhan was half-right. The messenger is also the message. When your chosen messenger is a watery-eyed crone with a reputation for featherheaded fabulism, it reflects poorly on you.

Secondly, I see the Hillary brains trust still thinks trying to brand the Golden Don as "DANGEROUS!" is going to hurt his reputation.

That's the problem with groupthink. When your group consists solely of pyjamaboys, sexual deviants and post-menstrual harridans, you're going to be out of touch with what normal people think.

To normal people who don't wear Depends, DANGEROUS DONNIE sounds like a wisecracking 80's action hero who dons sunglasses indoors and enjoys nothing more than kicking ass and chewing bubblegum.

And he's all out of bubblegum.

Anonymous Steve May 11, 2016 5:15 PM

VFM #7634 - I don't mean the Martians.

Early on in the book, John Carter fights some Apache braves. It's also mentioned that he's a Confederate war veteran, a Southern gentleman, and all the slaves on his family's plantation adore him.

It's WOW JUST WOW and I CAN'T EVEN stuff even before he goes to Mars.

Anonymous Steve May 11, 2016 5:20 PM

Jeff Wood - I'm a huge fan of George Macdonald Fraser and FLASHMAN AND THE REDSKINS was terrific.

Now, see here you mealy little pimp!" he replies. "I've had just about a bellyful of your pious hypocritical maundering... If you think [the whites] were a whit more guilty than your darling redskins, you're an even bigger bloody fool than you look. What bleating breast-beaters like you can't comprehend... is that when selfish, frightened men -- in other words, any men, red or white, civilised or savage -- come face to face in the middle of a wilderness that both of 'em want... then war breaks out, and the weaker goes under. Policies don't matter a spent piss -- it's the men in fear and rage and uncertainty watching the woods and skyline, d'you see, you purblind bookworm, you!"

Similarly, if you avoid History.com or Wikipedia's claim that it was all the US military against the Navajo, in "Kit Carson and the Indians" By Thomas W. Dunlay, page 257, he repeats what I was told by a Navajo guide at Canyon de Chelly: It was the Utes and Pueblos who sided with the Federals against the Navajo.

The Navajo were a fierce and warlike matriarchal nation. They treated their neighbors like the Maya and the Aztecs treated their neighbors. They were merciless against other native tribes.

Blogger Aeoli Pera May 11, 2016 5:27 PM

That's inspiring.

Blogger tweell May 11, 2016 5:30 PM

The Navajo have been working hard on tribal image for decades. Ask a Hopi about Navajo and you'll generally get an earful. For that matter, just look at a map of Arizona (with reservations marked) and you'll see that the Hopi were surrounded before the white man showed up and put a stop to the genocide.

The play on words that seems to be popular on the alt-right comes off as try-hard, which is why I suspect most of the terms don't gain more widespread acceptance (you hinted at this earlier in the day with your traffic measurements.) I'm not really sure what the solution to that would be.

Shouldn't these 2 goals not often be at cross purposes in rhetoric?

And you now know why the Leftists try everything they can to prevent folks from reading old books. Public school drives the natural curiosity and love of storybooks straight out of their innocent little minds--since they read nothing but filth and nihilism in school.

Next, they convince everyone that the old days are the bad days, the 1950s a time of horror, the Middle Ages a time of darkness. No dead white males need be read.

Finally, they change the meanings of words, so that, for example, anyone educated by Leftists cannot even read the opening of the Declaration of Independence, without thinking it is 'sexist' to refer to human beings as 'men' rather than as 'persons.'

I think the point that Vox has made here is that successful rhetoric involves the use of H. Liddell Hart's 'Indirect Approach':

"In Strategy the longest way around is often the shortest way there. A direct approach to the object exhausts the attacker and hardens the resistance by compression, where as an indirect approach loosens the defender's hold by upsetting his balance".

I believe that Sun Tzu has also had something to say about the subject.

I recall reading somewhere that the other tribes called the Apache by the name The Enemy.

The story goes that the Spanish explorer /conquerors moving up from the south brought natives with them to translate. The tribe encountered in what is now Sonora told them of fierce people to the north, whom they called “Enemy”, or something like “Ah-pah-che’”.

The Apache peoples, like the Navaho people, refer to themselves as “dineh”. This word translates to “people”.

Burroughs grew up in the 19th century, a more realistic time in some ways.

The Comanches gave everyone a good case of WhoopAss. They're the only tribe to methodically and successfully—for decades—roll back the white advance. They were probably the best light cavalry in existence, or at least they were tied with the Mongols for the title.

It wasn't until Jack Hayes and his Texas Rangers "discovered" financially bankrupt Samuel Colt's six-shooter, bought up almost all of his stock, and taught the rangers to use guerilla tactics against the Comanches that the tide turned.

Jack Hayes was a fascinating fella. Find a good (early) sympathetic biography sometime on the guy.

"As Hillary supporters made their way out of the gymnasium, an officer in riot gear pointed and said “that way only.” I stopped in my tracks when I saw where he wanted us to go. The sole exit from the campus was a narrow walkway approximately 40 feet long, lined 2-3 people deep on each side with more than a hundred screaming, cursing, jeering, angry Bernie supporters pushing hateful signs into people’s faces. They stood above the path on a two foot cement border wall, looming over and into the walkway, shouting SHAME ON YOU!

A scan of the signs revealed the same tired slurs rotated out against Hillary for decades. “Liar,” “Wall Street Shill” “Murderer” “Frack You” “Hillary Deports Children” “Clinton Crime Family” “Release the Transcripts.” A large sign written in drippy red paint screamed “Honduras!” and “You killed Berta Cáceres!” Conspiracy theories abounded, each one could easily be refuted with basic research from reliable sources, or a visit to snopes.com."

The really funny thing is that Hitler was wrong about some of the things that leftists adore, like letting Muslims into the military. And it's surprising that leftists don't like Hitler more, considering how much damage he did to whites, getting the men shot, women raped and kids hungry. You'd think he'd be a Democrat hero.
