No free passes anymore

Journalists are astonished to discover that the subjects of their investigations can and will strike back these days:
Seeking to shine some light into the dark world of Internet trolls, a journalist with Finland’s national broadcaster asked members of her audience to share their experience of encounters with Russia’s “troll army,” a raucous and often venomous force of online agitators.

The response was overwhelming, though not in the direction that the journalist, Jessikka Aro, had hoped.

As she expected, she received some feedback from people who had clashed with aggressively pro-Russian voices online. But she was taken aback, and shaken, by a vicious retaliatory campaign of harassment and insults against her and her work by those same pro-Russian voices.

“Everything in my life went to hell thanks to the trolls,” said Ms. Aro, a 35-year-old investigative reporter with the social media division of Finland’s state broadcaster, Yle Kioski....

The hardest blow, Ms. Aro said, came early this year when a Finnish-language news site, MVLehti.net, which is based in Spain and mostly focuses on vilifying immigrants, dug up and published court records that showed she had been convicted of using illegal amphetamines in 2004. She had been fined 300 euros.

The website’s headline: “NATO’s information expert Jessikka Aro turned out to be a convicted drug dealer.” It also posted photographs of Ms. Aro dancing in a slinky outfit at a nightclub in Bangkok....

Ilja Janitskin, the founder and head of MVLehti, who is based in Barcelona, Spain, said in response to emailed questions that he had no connection with Russia other than his surname. His political views, he said, are closer to those of Donald J. Trump, not Mr. Putin.

He added that he had become interested in Ms. Aro only after she accused his website of “distributing Russian propaganda.”
I have zero sympathy for these idiots. For decades, they have been attacking, exposing, and attempting to publicly humiliate those their masters have told them to target. I've been the subject of more than a few hit pieces myself, everywhere from NPR and New Republic to the Guardian.

But now the Internet has leveled the playing field, so when someone lies about me, I can immediately set the record straight, or if I choose, launch an investigation into them. Notice how Aro is complaining about being the target of a man who only knew about her because she attacked him in the first place.

Shades of Scalzi and the SF-SJWs. Some people simply don't understand that if you shoot at people, they will not only shoot back at you, but they have the option of continuing to do so long after you'd prefer a ceasefire. Remember, once you start something, you give up the ability to unilaterally decide that it's over.

I spent years watching and reading the proto-alt-right play like they never left the old days of MSM monopoly where every appearance with a MSM type was to be one of heartfelt appreciation.

IMO an appearance in the MSM should be treated as an opportunity to casually disqualify the authority of the MSM and second to drive traffic to your opinions.

Instead we were treated to intellectuals hoping to get "Smart Badges" from the dipshits in the MSM, leave that crap to Republicans

There ceased being journalist in the MSM long ago, when they ceased doing research for stories and started framing propaganda pieces for their pay master or in service of their ideology. I gave up on the MSM nearly three decades ago after working for a newspaper. Hearing about this story and watching some idiot saying how dangerous the Gawker smackdown by Thiel was on Faux news gives me little interest to do anything more than check the temperature of the corpse of media past from time to time.

I wonder how the MSM would respond to a website that was created solely to dig up and expose all the dirt on MSM journalists and their owners...

Probably by trying it against us, only to find that it doesn't affect us at all, seeing as the Alt Right doesn't care and doesn't have a credibility problem.

Blogger dh May 31, 2016 9:30 AM

I had this occur once with a business lawsuit. Some former client/company decided they would sue me. Sure, no problem. That initiated a countersuit. They assumed that, incorrectly, that I would not have the stomach for big lawyer bills.

Instead of hiring a really expensive great lawyer, on advice of my very expensive great lawyer, I instead went to a strip mall over by the law school, and hired an entire firm of lawyers who had been practicing for about 6 months. Instead of paying $400/hr for a great corporate lawyer, who could bankrupt me after a year of legal bills, I hired an entire team of lawyers, for $55/hr each, plus a $5k retainer.

They were hired only to do discovery and depositions and file motions. I called them my redundant array of inexpensive lawyers.

We loved to do in person meetings and conferences with opposing counsel. They other sides corporate lawyer would load up outside counsel, drive on down to the courthouse, we'd reserve the biggest room we could find, and just draw it out. I'd pay $300, maybe $400 for a three hour conference with a room full of attorneys, they'd be paying six or seven times that. I noticed at one point no matter how many lawyers we brought, next time, they brought another. So I started having my guys ring friends and other recently graduated law students, and after lunch was on me.

Anyways, after some months, I'd spent about $25k in legal bills. The other side decided they had had enough bleeding, and offered to drop the case. I agreed. They forgot to require I drop the countersuit. So my countersuit went on another 3 months, before they paid me the entire amount in my legal bills plus enough so that I bought 51% of the law firm, which is now one of my best investments.

The worst being I had already been gracious about ending the relationship. Cancelling a large software project at the end, during user acceptance, because it does what was agreed to in writing and not what you think you want now is not an ideal strategy for winning. Just because I was willing to end the project with just the initial 1/3rd paid, and not collect the remaining 2/3 that I was owed doesn't mean I am going to go limp when you bite.

The point being, VD is right. Once you start trouble, you are on the offensive only has long as it takes for you to lose the momentum. Assuming the other side is weak, or will crumble, is only a good strategy so far as it goes. And it doesn't go far against some people and in some cases. People who look like paper tigers can be the real deal.

Blogger dh May 31, 2016 9:32 AM

I looked into this. I started FOIA random government officials for e-mails to and from journalists.

The real problem is that it's asymetric for a while. They have the barrels of ink. I decided I was not anti-fragile enough and let it slide. But there's a great project there. The type of project that could attract friendly billionaires.

Putin, despite what people do like about him, still allows immigration from the Caucasus and Central Asia. Lots of Chechens, Tajiks, Uzbeks, and Kyrgyz in major Russian cities now. Just like Latin Americans here except they're Muslim, which makes things far worse. Sort of like the British with their indulgence of Pakis, or the French with North Africans.

That was a great strategy.

Agree it would be good to go after the journalists. I had been thinking something along the lines of digging up dirt on them and then hit them with it on-air when they go for the gotcha moment.

In the country I am from there are really restrictive and vague laws on free speech and regularly now people are being financially ruined or arrested because of these laws. Hence the laws need to be destroyed but no political group is up to the task. However bad think and speech also must apply to men and whites as per the way the law is written and hence I'm thinking to trigger a huge mass of sjws with something that wont get you on the wrong side of the law, maybe something about genetics and iq but not race. Their anti-white male hate will spew forth on social media and the media, even some politicians would join in and then hit every single one of them with a discrimination lawsuit based on the vague law. Before long all political parties would be panicking to void the law. But like you said not anti-fragile enough and/or would need a backer to fund the lawsuits.

Blogger Ahazuerus May 31, 2016 11:09 AM

I have followed Glenn Greenwald's writing for some years, even though he's a prog gay nutter, because he's also a constitutional lawyer, a great litigator, a decent writer, and a civil liberties extremist. In addition, and like our host, he engages closely with his own comments threads and openly concedes his writing and career have been greatly enriched thereby.

Lately he's been outraged that a billionaire is "attacking" Gawker by funding Hulk Hogan's lawsuit. Even though he works for a billionaire funding the Intercept site he writes for, and even though he wrote a book about the two-tiered justice system which hammers the powerless mercilessly and excuses the powerful. He doesn't admit that Gawker, having been convicted, should simply pay the price for their crimes, because he's personally invested in the fiction that the 1st amendment creates a media that is protected from the consequences of their own crimes.

Today fhe BBC reports that a member of parliament received 600+ rape threats in one day.

Sure, and there's no such thing as a false flag.

There is a new Russian law that is giving away land in the far east to any Russian citizen that requests it on the provision of creating some economic activity on it within a time period. Kind of like a 'go east' policy. I was thinking of aquaculture or agriculture JV for export to China. The Russian Far East can be a pretty nice and clean place with significant potential.

However SJWs are still to stupid to realise we are starting to dig up things about them. I have screenshots of some SJWs I despise on facebook, just incase they ever try an attack run at me. I think we can find alot of the journalists dirt just by searching their social media and or articles in the past.

I was thinking the other day there has to be a market for real investigative journalism since so few people trust the Media. There was that lady forced out of CBS I think for investigating things the owners didn't want investigated, I think she started her own website but maybe Wesearchr could be a platform for people like her as well.

Regarding the Bernie question on Wesearchr and articles from the past: http://www.mrctv.org/blog/sanders-men-fantsize-about-women-being-abused

This may well work for some types of sites, like blog hosts. However, social media is very sensitive to the network effect. Their usefulness scales non-linearly with the number of users; if most people are still using Facebook, there's not a lot of motivation to switch to something else (like, say, Google+ :) ).

Any social media competitor would have to (a) have one or more features missing from Facebook and (b) quickly grab a large user base. I don't think 4G, guerilla-style market disruption can take them down in the long run.

Anonymous Mr. Rational May 31, 2016 5:44 PM

@54 You can attack by providing things they've stopped providing.  The easiest is probably a distributed network comment section for on-line news sites which have dropped comments because they debunk The Narrative.  You let people devote part of their home PC to serving the network, and access it via apps on their smart devices.  The app attaches the comments to news articles and applies your own personal filters.  You could probably finance it with ad sales.

Once you have a whole lot of people talking about the news, they may abandon Faceborg on their own.
