Pink SF will ban itself

MidAmericaCon II refuses to include a Hugo-nominated work in the Hugo Packet:
As the World Science Fiction Convention, MidAmeriCon II has members from 35 countries. Safe Space as Rape Room quotes extensively from a written work containing explicit descriptions of children engaged in sexual activities. This material may be illegal in some home countries of  members. MidAmeriCon II does not wish to put any member at risk of inadvertently violating the law in their country of residence by downloading it in the packet without intent. As such, under legal advice, we are not  hosting or distributing this material directly.

The “written work” referred to in the above is the novel Hogg, by the SFWA’s Damon Knight Memorial Grand Master Samuel R. Delany.
The WorldCon convention has also issued at least two other "warning labels" to two other Hugo-nominated works in the packet, one a Best Related Work by Moira Greyland, the other a Best Short Story by Chuck Tingle.

Speaking of Pink SF, now that John Scalzi's new book has been announced, it's time to congratulate everyone who had "Isaac Asimov". I'm sure we all look forward to reading the adventures of Eli Seldom and her psychic predictions of how the Galactic Empire would collapse as a result of interplanetary menstrual synchronization.

I see it is now official SJW Twitterati dogma that Chuck Tingle is epically trolling us with our inclusion of his SRBI on the Hugo nomination ticket.

I'm not entirely clear how this works, maybe he has some kind of mind meld hold over you which forced you to nominate his work against your will, but I'm assured I must be an idiot for doubting it.

Blogger Phillip George May 27, 2016 4:42 AM

does everyone see the gargantuan hypocrisy in respecting the laws of other countries while utterly trashing your own at every opportunity.
kiddy porn is acceptable if it only offends local right wing bigots, whose children SJWs should be free to molest.

Excellent news. Especially de facto ban of Delany. The black knight rides.

...Eli Seldom and her psychic predictions of how the Galactic Empire would collapse as a result of interplanetary menstrual synchronization.

Ah, a reference to a plot device he calls "The Flow" ... nice. That mind bug is in my head now.

Unfortunately, I thought Scalzi was going to rip off Chuck Tingle next, and so move on to something newer. Maybe in the future. It is frustrating, knowing there are other authors who have the "fire in their belly" to write, and then to see publishing resources diverted to somebody who spends his time revising older works and tropes.

The fact that "Safe Space As Rape Room" is too graphic for the Hugo packet should be an obvious warning sign to the SF community that something is very wrong with the authors and editors who praise Delany.

Making cake love real in the process.

Because in the end, Tingle is just sweet, sweet icing on the cake.

They're SJWs. All stories must fit the Narrative. The Narrative is that I am super stupid and everything I do backfires. Therefore, nominating Space Raptor was an EPIC MISTAKE and I am SO ANGRY at Dr. Tingle's EPIC TROLLING.

Of course, the Narrative will be punctured when they No Award Tingle, but they never think even one step ahead.

Blogger Trid May 27, 2016 5:44 AM

And my friends wonder why I read the same books over and over (besides a few recommendations by Vox)

Blogger Ron May 27, 2016 5:48 AM

@VD

but they never think even one step ahead

Because they don't take responsibility for their lives or the lives of the people around them. They let themselves wallow in the dark place because that is easier than learning from failure. It's easier to live in fear than to have courage.

And real courage doesn't just mean "taking a stand" it means taking the responsibility to make that stand work. And that's hard. Whenever an MMA fighter wins he is on top of the world, but when a fighter loses he is utterly crushed emotionally. Because he didn't just lose a fight, he lost months of training and sacrifice, of coping with his own fear. Of hopes and dreams.

So it's easier to fear, to despair, to give up and take whatever drug can remove the pain.

Blogger Rantor May 27, 2016 5:56 AM

And from the headline, I was afraid these Buckaroos had lost their tingle for Chuck.

No, worse, they are trying to hide the truth about their sick, perverted heroes from the fan base....

Damn it!

I had Robert Howard.

I was so looking forward to the adventures of Chloenan the Gender Inclusive Barbarian. And xer struggles to make it as a woman in a man's world, (although regressive still consider her a man because of her very large penis).

An epic world with lots intense protesting, long discussions on how fantasy personas are the exact same thing as gender and oodles of awkward sex.

Chloenan the Barbarian, next year's Nebula Award winner.

Blogger doofus May 27, 2016 6:45 AM

Of course, Terry Pratchett already went a ways down that road with Cohen the Barbarian, the world's oldest raping, pillaging, and killing barbarian. At least on the days when he could get out of bed because his back wasn't bothering him too much. The difference between Pratchett's version and Scalzi's likely version would be that Cohen the Barbarian was hilarious, a spoof of everything Conan, while Scalzi's would just be tiresome and preachy.

No. It's a rather unclever way of invoking an amalgam of the Forbidden Fruit Effect and the Streisand Effect.

They are already taking pre-orders for Scalzi's 2017 book which according to him is months away from being finished. At the beginning of this year he said he would have two books coming out in 2017.

Both need to be best sellers for weeks (not just manipulated on to it for one week) to justify his contract.

Pink SF will ban itself

I disagree with this premise. In order for Pink SF to ban itself based on this current action, the Gatekeepers would be required to enforce these newfound rules evenly. Perhaps I am missing some variably, but there is nothing that I've ever observed about their collective behavior that leads me to that conclusion. And if called out for their lack of consistency? Well, there's always Rule #1...

Anonymous VFM #6306 May 27, 2016 7:56 AM

Now that Title IX now requires football coaches to be fired if they happen not to be special prosecutors and extrajudicial police officers who enforce legalized double jeopardy against black men in defense of unequal protection for women, I think it is safe to say that SJWs Never Anticipate Consequences.

Exactly.
But you won't see WorldCon pull any literature that includes homosexuality from the packet. Such works will be deemed "too important" to be censored due to WrongLaw, or some other inane form of justification gymnastics. To expect them to consistently enforce this decision is folly.

So the Scalzi formula for a big 5 book deal is:
1. Pick a classic of SF/F.
2. Make all "hims" xers, and all "hers" xims.
3. Profit.

Seems like I could write a Ruby script to do that fairly easily (and I am a lousy coder). When do I get my check?

Anybody making book on Scalzi's book actually coming out March 21st 2017? I say it's 2 to 1 the date is pushed back at least once, even odds it doesn't come out in 2017 at all.

Anonymous JB May 27, 2016 10:52 AM

I can't help thinking that if Tingle does win a Hugo (minimal odds; no award likely), that Vox will announce on Tingle's website, rabbispuppies.com, that he or a member of the Ilk is Chuck Tingle. It'll be like feeding them their own thigh meat at a dinner party. Tell me I'm crazy.

Hey wait a minute. Now that they've broached the topic, shouldn't there be a Worldcon/Hugo Code of Conduct specifying things like age-appropriate rape (country-by-country of course), whether or not the women/tranny characters are wearing burkas, that sort of thing? Might be something to draw up like EPH and propose at the business meeting. Because concern.

Blogger Verne May 27, 2016 11:33 AM

Now I know that John Scalzi had very similar tastes in Si/Fi as I did. His first and biggest hit was a take off on Robert Heinlein's Star Ship Troopers. Now we have ‎Isaac Asimov's Foundation being used. I can only hope his next effort is a take off on Dune.
