They should have listened to Bill

Bill Murray knew the feminist parody of Ghostbusters was going to be a disaster and tried to stay out of it, but Sony persuaded him to do it:

FYI, apparently AG has some ideas (Harrison, of course).  I’m trying to stay out of the middle of this one but let me know if there’s anything you need me to do.

Subject: Ghostbusters/Murray - Litigation Counsel [CONFIDENTIAL]

In order to more fully evaluate our position if Bill Murray again declines to engage on “Ghostbusters”, AG requested that we identify “aggressive” litigation counsel with whom we can consult to evaluate our alternatives and strategize.  [Harkening back to his prior employer, of course, raised the name of David Boies.]

Personally, while I’m fine with aggressive, I think we are in much worse shape if this goes public so seems to me we should look for someone who isn’t seeking the spotlight.

Can we discuss at some point soon to provide a suggestion or two?

Thanks.
Oh, it sounds as if they're in pretty bad shape across the board at this point. I won't issue any spoiler warnings, because it appears it would be impossible to spoil this movie.

Just watched the trailer. Unless their goal is to underwhelm I see nothing to make me desire going to see this flick. Somewhere a recent college grad has projected there is an untapped audience of female ghostbuster fans no one knew about and, by the way, there were not enough sly allusions to vaginas in the first one anyway.

Anonymous FN-2199 May 07, 2016 7:07 AM

Sony needs to cut their losses. Release the turd to Netflix. Apologize and promise to make a movie fans want to see. But they won't. The idiots would rather bankrupt Sony, promoting this POS in perpetuity.

I predict with confidence Murray's performance will be even wooden than Harrison (Why won't they let me die?) Ford's in Return of the Jedi.

Sony is the most clueless studio in Hollywood. The actor is your salesmen. If you strongarm an actor into joining your project, he is in a great position to sabotage it.

Although in Murray's case, I think he's just doing a pass the torch cameo, so as to give this requel a patina of legitimacy. So it's less of a problem.

I am really hoping they can resist making a computer generated "ghost Egon". Harold Ramis' memory deserves better.

Anonymous Alice De Goon May 07, 2016 7:42 AM

I remember seeing my first promotional picture of the latest Ghostbusters and thinking "Those can't really be the uniforms they're going with. Surely those are the junky rags they'll all be wearing in the early 'misfits figuring out how to work together' part of the movie, and once they've got everything figured out and are ready to battle the main villain, they'll switch over to uniforms that actually look like they were designed by someone with a working set of eyes..."

Or, if we're lucky, they'll switch over to body-length paper bags.

They should have released it Mar-Apr or Sept-Oct. Those are the 'dumping grounds' for flicks the studio expects to 'underperform'.
Rumor has it, this destroyed the friendship between Ackroyd and Murray. Dan kept pestering Bill to get on board with GB III. Bill kept saying ''the scripts suck'' (which if Ackroyd was writing them, that was probably true).
Like I said, Sony's hoping all the cross-promotion (GB snacks and toys are reappearing) plus foreign sales will keep this POS from bombing.

My guess is Sony signed him to a movie he wanted to do and they slipped a ''do GB as well'' clause in the contract.
Bill discovered it after signing and tried to back out, hence the litigation.

Hollywood logic is sequels = easy cash. Who cares if the movie sucks? Who cares if fans never even asked for a sequel? We're all goyim to be farmed anyway, and when you have Hollywood Accounting on your side, you can pretty much do what you want. This movie will tank, and Sony will make another one later, but add more Murray or Aykroyd to appease the fanbois, and all will be well.

You have the reading comprehension skills of a potted plant. Several people already made suggestions.

As for why the shysters didn't think it was a simple breach of contract, Steinberg spells it out for you - "...I think we are in much worse shape if this goes public..."

The whole point of having Murray involved is his connection with fans of the original. If it goes public that he doesn't want anything to do with it, no connection, ergo, no reason to have him involved. If they file a suit, they lose no matter what happens in court.

MEN are the dominant audience for comedies - EXCEPT rom-coms which are not comedies - and nerd comedies triply so.

It's the follow up to BRIDESMAIDS, also directed by Paul Feig and also starring Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy.

BRIDESMAIDS made nearly $300m box office on a $30m budget, so inevitably the studios want more of that sort of thing.

Why they chose GHOSTBUSTERS as a vehicle for that-sort-of-thing is beyond me, though.

This movie is sure to underwhelm (at best).

It won't draw in the sorts who'd watch the original. It won't draw in mainstream women since the lead actresses are repellent (women by large would rather have their leads and poster girls be super models over fatties and horse-faces outside of comedies where the leads are supposed to be repugnant Homer Simpson types).

After the movie underwhelms, expect White men or (just men) to be blamed.

Blogger ray May 07, 2016 4:55 PM

Goona leave a mark. Nice cold sore on hot hollylips. Well done. And p.s. what's up with Ackroyd? Has this guy gone full SJW over the decades? Last I heard he was shilling for some Chicago discount booze-merchant. Did Dan turn into his own Scumbag Salesman character?

Many major corporations currently mirror government: don't care much if they lose money, even substantial money. Forcing the Narrative and continuing the Beatdown is far more important -- ongoing psy-op.

When people become sufficiently cocooned from the consequences of their actions, they pull stuff like this agit-prop-movie. They only stop when it costs them big, and personal.

51 -- "Can anyone explain the (supposed) appeal of Melissa McCarthy?"

Sure. American Idol effect. The Adele/Susan Boyle effect.

Western people, especially females, suck so bad nowdays that they don't even want inspirational art. That just makes they feel inferior which, of course, they are. So endless fake 'celebrities' are created that don't inspire the audience, but instead clone and reflect the audience. Females want their mediocrity to be great art, and they want those 'artists' to look, behave, and think like themselves. Voila.

Evidence everywhere of a cheyne-stokes culture. Pigs gruntling in velvet pens.

Anonymous Steve May 07, 2016 5:23 PM

Can anyone explain the (supposed) appeal of Melissa McCarthy?

She's like a female Chris Farley, but not funny.

There aren't many good comedies coming out of Hollywood these days anyway.

BRIDESMAIDS was a huge hit, but basically just a female version of THE HANGOVER, and both films were mediocre.

Will Ferrell had a good run with OLD SCHOOL, ANCHORMAN, and TALLADEGA NIGHTS, but stopped being hilarious ten years ago.

Ben Stiller was last seen making audiences laugh in DODGEBALL (2004).

The Farrelly Brothers and Judd Apatow don't make comedies like they used to.

Seems all the really talented comedians are doing stand up, not movies.

What would be the grounds for litigation? You MUST work for us?

He's probably on the hook contractually for GB sequels. This is not an uncommon thing in Hollywood. The most famous example I can think of was Frank Sinatra, who made a movie in 1968 called The Detective, for which he was contractually obligated to do any sequels. They eventually got around to making a sequel in 1988, and they had to ask 73 year old Sinatra if he wanted to reprise his role (even though the character had been renamed) as John McClane in Die Hard. To which he replied "I'm too old and too rich to act anymore." Of course they didn't really want him, but they could have forced him to do it, and he could have forced them to use him instead of Bruce Willis (which probably would have just killed the project).

Anonymous Steve May 08, 2016 4:40 AM

Theproductofafineeduction - Eh. It had its moments. Stiller and Downey Jr were great in it. I liked Tom Cruise's cameo. Overall as a movie it was a mixed bag though - Jack Black stank up the screen and Steve Coogan was terrible.

Anonymous Huh May 08, 2016 8:40 AM

"they had to ask 73 year old Sinatra if he wanted to reprise his role (even though the character had been renamed) as John McClane in Die Hard. "

Even more painful than watching Clint Eastwood in his 60s lumber around in action scenes in "In the Line of Fire" and "Unforgiven".

Blogger Quadko May 08, 2016 12:33 PM

I recently rewatched the first two; first one was funny - dumpy guys making slapstick comedy send-up of horror genera. Second one took itself too seriously to be funny.

Third one looks to continue the worsening trend, but formula of "get dumpy comedian girls" is perfectly in line with first. Unlikely, but if they remember it's supposed to mock the horror genera, at least they'd've stayed on-formula this time.

But from the preview they didn't even meet the second one's low bar.

Steve wrote:BRIDESMAIDS was a huge hit, but basically just a female version of THE HANGOVER, and both films were mediocre.

Bridesmaids did well because the subject matter resonates with women. Meanwhile, there is no way the subject matter of Ghostbusters will resonate with the intended audience. The movie would make more money if it was about women having sex with hunky ghosts instead of fighting them.

Other things the new ghostbusters will not have:

-Bill Murray's overpowering charisma (a cameo will not cut it)
-Dan Akroyd's unique brand of insanity (he actually believes in ghosts/monsters/aliens/etc.)
-Harold Ramis's autistic deadpan delivery ("I collect spores, molds, and fungus.")
-Ernie Hudson's normal black guy-ness (as opposed to a "Awww HELLLLLL NAW!!!" black person)

Blogger Banjo May 12, 2016 5:50 PM

@Huh: Unforgiven is a damn fine movie, and Eastwood was perfect in the role of the aged outlaw.

Not sure what you wanted there.
