"I will suspend immigration"

Donald Trump continues to talk the talk in response to Orlando:
We need to respond to this attack on America as one united people – with force, purpose and determination.

But the current politically correct response cripples our ability to talk and think and act clearly.

If we don't get tough, and we don't get smart – and fast – we're not going to have a country anymore -- there will be nothing left.

The killer, whose name I will not use, or ever say, was born to Afghan parents who immigrated to the United States. His father published support for the Afghan Taliban, a regime which murders those who don’t share its radical views. The father even said he was running for President of that country.

The bottom line is that the only reason the killer was in America in the first place was because we allowed his family to come here.

That is a fact, and it's a fact we need to talk about.

We have a dysfunctional immigration system which does not permit us to know who we let into our country, and it does not permit us to protect our citizens.

We have an incompetent administration, and if I am not elected President, that will not change over the next four years -- but it must change, and it must change now.

With fifty people dead, and dozens more wounded, we cannot afford to talk around the issue anymore -- we have to address it head on.

I called for a ban after San Bernardino, and was met with great scorn and anger but now, many are saying I was right to do so -- and although the pause is temporary, we must find out what is going on. The ban will be lifted when we as a nation are in a position to properly and perfectly screen those people coming into our country.

The immigration laws of the United States give the President the power to suspend entry into the country of any class of persons that the President deems detrimental to the interests or security of the United States, as he deems appropriate.

I will use this power to protect the American people. When I am elected, I will suspend immigration from areas of the world when there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies, until we understand how to end these threats.

After a full, impartial and long overdue security assessment, we will develop a responsible immigration policy that serves the interests and values of America.

We cannot continue to allow thousands upon thousands of people to pour into our country, many of whom have the same thought process as this savage killer.

Many of the principles of Radical Islam are incompatible with Western values and institutions.

Radical Islam is anti-woman, anti-gay and anti-American.
I'd prefer it if he dropped the adjective "Radical" and if he said "end" rather than "suspend" immigration, but that's a hell of a lot better than any candidate in any party has ever been on immigration.

Muslim immigrants are only a drop in the bucket in re to America's immigration problem. The most encouraging part of the speech is Trump taking the position that he can and will unilaterally restrict immigration. That clears the way for him to declare a complete moratorium. Mass deportations can also likely be carried out under the existing laws. At least he should be able to deport all illegals and anyone here legally who commits a crime. I'm not sure to what extent he would be able to unilaterally refuse to renew student and work visas and then deport those people. In any case, he can make a lot of progress on the foreigner problem without any assistance from Congress other than them approving the necessary resources, something the cucks will have a hard time refusing to do.

Of course, that would still leave the much larger problem - foreigners with US citizenship. Many would self-deport to follow their deported family members home. But I won't feel betrayed if Trump leaves this problem for his successor.

Same as I try not to associate christianity in general with radicals like creationists and the 'death to gay' crowd.

Not really consequent in that regard since with the immigration ban you want to keep them all out so you cannot avoid generalizing then.

I kid you not, on Facebook the SJWs are circulating a story (from a MSM source I think; I don't recall where) which claims that Donald Trump said that the Orlando terrorist was from "some country named Afghan"; ie: "lol how stupid can Trump be, there's no such country as Afghan, haha (etc)".

I don't know if the person who originated this misinterpretation of what Trump said was actually too stupid to realize that "born to Afghan parents" means the parents were from Afghanistan, not "some country call Afghan"; ie, that's what you call people from Afghanistan: Afghans. Trump was not saying that there country was called Afghan.

Either very very stupid, or the writer knows that the majority of the people who spread and repeat these anti-Trump stories are too stupid to know any better, and/or too blinded by hatred to care.

It is also positive that later in the speech he emphasizes that terrorists have been entering through the legal immigration system and have come from areas outside the middle east - Somalia, Chechnya, Pakistan. This suggests a potentially very broad ban. A moratorium based on national security rather than nationalism won't be the full ban we need and won't cover the main threats - Mexico/Central America, China, India - but he is moving in the right direction and feeding it to the public in bite size pieces.

Blogger Gordon June 14, 2016 5:02 AM

@6 Phillip George: the problem with any profession of faith is that Islam specifically calls upon followers to lie to the unbelievers if those lies advance Islam. One may as well have a guard outside gay nightclubs asking everyone if they're carrying weapons intending to murder dozens in the club. "Oh, no, not me! I just have all my sex toys in my tactical vest...."

@20 FrankNorman: Every president in the modern era has found that simply ordering the bureaucracy to act doesn't work well. There are many many ways one with civil service protection can throw sand in the gears. On the other hand, while they have to be paid, they don't have to be in offices or have actual responsibilities.

So order some action. Those who refuse, or who fail to act with alacrity, pull them out and give them a tiny desk with no phone and no computer in a warehouse while the wheels of discipline slowly grind. Don't fill the empty slots. Oh, they will scream, and one can count on the media generating thousands of "but they just want to serve" stories. Trump might be the only guy who could withstand that.

Anonymous Longtime Lurker June 14, 2016 6:13 AM

That speech is absolutely devastating, not only for what Trump said, but also for the fearless way in which he said it.

Trump also compelled Hillary to say "radical Islamism," thereby forcing her to publicly break with the president, a president who won't ever say such things.

Not bad for a day's campaign work and a most awkward development too, given the president's recent decision to publicly campaign with Hillary.

I used to think of Strauss and Howe's "Fourth Turning" as entertaining 'historical astrology' ... but over the past few years I have come to believe they found a valid pattern to American history. Donald Trump is fitting their role of the "Grey Champion" - a leader of supreme confidence who will overturn the failing institutions and practices formed and strengthened over the past seven decades. Fortunately, this cycle the public is breaking towards someone approximating the caliber of a Washington, and not an FDR (as would be the case if Sanders were dominant).

If the temporary immigration ban becomes permanent-- meaning a decade or two where we don't import large numbers of low skilled immigrants into our society-- great. I'm all for it. Let us figure out how to employ some of the 94 million plus here that are already without jobs.

OpenID simplytimothy June 14, 2016 6:28 AM

Trump is the first candidate since Reagan who talks like an American. Naturally, neocons hate him.

Peter Wehner, a former adviser to President George W. Bush, said Trump relies on appeals to ethnic nationalism because he is ignorant about the nuances of counterterrorism policy. He said “racial resentment” is the basis of Trump’s appeal to voters.

“He relishes this kind of stuff,” Wehner said. “He takes a horrific incident like what happened in Orlando, and he attempts to inflame the situation. Unfortunately, this tragedy is going to help him rather than hurt him.”

Blogger Sherwood family June 14, 2016 6:29 AM

Trump can do what Reagan did with the air traffic controllers. Reagan fired them for failing to do their jobs. He fired 11,000+ air traffic controllers in one fell swoop, who held, arguably much more important jobs and who were harder to train and replace than many civil service jobs that currently exist.

All Trump would have to do would be to shut down consular services in Islamic countries which he could do with the stroke of a pen. He could then instruct the revocation of all visas for personnel from Islamic countries (which means currently valid visas no longer are). Trump could do that in the first twenty-four hours.

There would be some push back but he could also instruct, per FAA regulations, that U.S. carriers no longer board passport holders from certain countries or risk being charged to ferry them back to point of origin on their own dime.

He could also give notice that border crossings would be shut to all non-US passport holders after a certain date.

He is the chief executive and can use his powers to effect those kinds of changes rapidly.

He could then transfer the personnel encumbering those jobs to other work that needs doing, for example they could work to finish processing immigrant visa petitions already in the pipeline so that a firm date for the beginning of a general immigration moratorium could be announced with no one left to process. It would be important to make the process orderly.

Then after processing all those still in the pipeline, these workers could get to work on the fraud cases/petition revocation cases where fraud has been alleged and cleaning those cases up and getting citizens who received their citizenship by fraudulent means to be stripped of that status and deported.

Following that these individuals could look at put to work going through birth certificates from the last decade and determining which children had parents where were illegal immigrants at the time of the child's birth and making up a big fat list of anchor babies whose parents could then be put on a list to prevent them from petitioning for parents who broke the law to have kids in the U.S. and to charge them for money taken out of Social Security to pay for their births. (Anchor babies are almost always born on the tax payers' tab. It is proverbial and they should have to pay it back.)

Obviously, we need to protect Muslims from themselves and keep them out of America for their own sake, in order to prevent the horrific tragedy of them watching as our Magic Dirt turns their descendants into violent homophobes. For their own good, we must force them to raise their kids in their ancestral homelands of Afghanistan or Pakistan or whatever, where they can grow up into the peaceful progressives that they were meant to be. Allahu Akbar!

Anonymous 5343 June 14, 2016 6:37 AM

The adjective "radical" and other current niceties of language ("suspend" rather than "end") used to discuss immigration are irrelevant provided Trump can actually stop the flow of Muslim imports. If immigration is suspended and the attacks continue (as they will), then a more draconian response will become necessary and the rhetoric can be amped up accordingly.

The language of the discussion will change as necessary to accommodate the new reality if and only if Trump can get immigration suspended.

Blogger Sherwood family June 14, 2016 7:24 AM

Gaiseric, it is better and worse than that. The mainstream media have already prepped the battle space by stating that Trump's speech will incite the Muslims to fresh attacks. Muslims, never ones to miss a media opportunity, are likely to do just like they said and make an attack.

That will, of course, kill countless innocents which is horrid. But these are ultimately the victims of media PC and the stupidity of bringing people to the U.S. who have the jihadist mind virus.

That will galvanize those who believe that Trump is on the right track. Especially if Muslims involved or supporting it cite Trump's speech as cause. Because after all, how many people in the U.S. think terrorists should get a pass because some idiot politician made a speech they didn't like? Even those who don't like Trump will stop making that stupid argument and that gives Trump more ammo and more cover to keep making the same point and to move the Overton window further.

Cop work is one of the careers that males with sexual identity issues gravitate towards because it provides them with a certain amount of social camouflage.

I am hoping that Trump will come out and say something like, "We don't have a gun problem, we have an immigration problem." If you take away the murders by immigrants and the black-on-black killings, the USA has a very low murder rate, and an even lower murder by firearm rate.

If anything, they're orthodox. They're not "radical" because they're not distorting what's in the Koran - they're just adhering to it.

I was out of the country recently. Flying back in, I went through customs/immigration. What a fucking zoo. As in, menagerie. The guys with badges looked and spoke like Americans, but every other single person was some sort of immigrant speaking broken, heavily accented English. There was no organization, no reaction to the chaos, no clue among these idiots. The spectacle of a plane load of Europeans trying to understand the garbled Spanglish, engrish, and hindiish being jabbered at them was as amusing as it was embarrassing.

Plus, there was my Russian friend's visa application. It asked if he was planning, while visiting the US, to engage in any terrorist activities, but it was careful to note that answering "yes" to the question would not necessarily result in him being denied his visa.

We need someone yelling "you're fired!" lots and lots.

It will be interesting to see what reaction results from Hillary winning the election in a near landslide after Trump demonstrates he has near zero embrace of basic facts of both domestic and international politics and when Gary Johnson takes a good 4% of the vote that in other years would have gone to the GOP Candidate.

If there is any tactical objective that needs to be embraced by Trump right now its marginalizing Johnson. HE is the real threat to a Trump presidency and carrying out of a Trump agenda.

Additionally, Trump has to go to school. The primary advantage that Hillary possesses is a greater grasp of basic facts and history. Trump needs to overcome this if he's going to win.

All that said, I'm still wondering, what happens with his supporters if he is unable to do this and loses?

We have at least one more 10-100 bodycount Muslim episode left before the election. Not including the usual drip-drip we get on a daily basis which the media tries to filter out. Maybe they won't be quite so successful with that after Orlando, we'll see.

Then we'll have the constant shitstorm of Europe. Possibly laid more stark after #Brexit

And then, there's the fact that Trump is running against Crooked Hillary.

I'd put Trump sweeping Oregon, New York, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan as orders of magnitude more likely than Gary Johnson being a threat to his presidency.

Driving around Detroit metro area during a visit home I tuned into a sports talk show. The host was saying how ridiculous it was to focus on Islam as the cause of the attack. He then started trotting out a long list of other large attacks that had been perpetrated by "Americans". What did I hear from the list? Atheist, atheist, atheist... and one where one of the attackers had put up stuff in there domicile say "Sinners Repent". He went on to say he wasn't calling for gun "control" in general, that would be silly. Just like putting a blanket ban on immigration from some area of the world. Because that would go against American traditions and ethics...

It helped remind me that people in the media are generally clueless beyond the scope of their subject matter. Sports broad casters being the absolute worst in Detroit, starting with Mitch Album who once said something along the lines of talk radio show listeners being dumb or crazy on his sport talk segment [no, not very self aware] and the hosts being idiots. He later went on to having his own talk radio show, so he was partially borne out in that estimation. Rational discussion on the radio in Detroit died with the end of the hay day of talk radio stations back in the 1980s.

They simply can't process new information that the primary season has given us, because they have no frame of reference yet to understand it.

I'd like to think that I'm more intelligent than some of these people, but some of them are pretty sharp, so it's amazing to see this massive, massive blind spot in their analysis. I suppose a large part of it is that they can't get out of their traditional sources for information, so they're just not exposed. You can't make an intelligent analysis of a situation if you literally know nothing about some of the most important relevant information about it.

"UPDATE: They have caved and are going to "arrest someone else" in relation to the Orlando shooting
QUESTION: Why did they let them go to begin with? If our patsy is the only one dead, and at least two other shooters were inside the club while the police had it all locked down, HOW DID THEY GET AWAY? How could people be outside holding the doors through this shooting when the police were obviously ALL OVER THAT PLACE? I'll tell you how: BULLLLLLLLLLLLSHIT!
The story line: ONE SHOOTER. Everyone else walks. But now that social media provided a way for that to get blown up, they are back tracking desperately and trying to plug holes they never thought anyone would open. And the arrest would be made over the next few days??!!?? WHY? If they could make an arrest at all, it should happen INSTANTLY without announcement. But it might take them a few days to scolpamine up a retarded patsy and hypnotize him into saying he did it, THAT IS WHY IT WILL TAKE A FEW DAYS AND THERE IS NO OTHER CONCEIVABLE REASON. This stuff is not a video game, where you can predict you will be off a level "in a few minutes". The only way they can predict an arrest over the next few days is if they already have their back up patsy drugged, in programming, and waiting for the electric chair.

4% makes a difference, sure. The problem is more in assuming that Hillary is going to continue to pull strong numbers especially after getting blasted rhetorically.

Hillary has a glass jaw, but most people just don't want to see it for whatever reason.

Also, the problem is in assuming that the 4% would ever go for Trump if Trump ever changes something he does.

A lot of those supposed 4% just dislike Trump on an emotional level. You can't rationally appeal to them, and a lot of them have made up their mind before considering any facts or positions. If Trump makes a play for them, he weakens his own base. Turning on a dime and lying like that isn't exactly Trump's forte, as he's a brash and bold guy who has a bad habit of speaking what's on his mind, for good or ill.

I remember years ago listening to an unctuous Lefty talk about the necessity of high taxation to ameliorate income equality. He was asked, "If a rich person earns his money morally and legally, isn't it wrong for the government to take most of his income?" The Lefty's response was that it was necessary for the common good, because income disparity always leads to social unrest.

I was thinking about this, because you'll never ever hear a Lefty making a similar argument vis-a-vis multiculturalism. If you were to follow up and ask this Lefty "Couldn't you make the same argument about limiting immigration, because history and science has clearly shown that multiculturalism leads to social unrest and a lack of trust in society?", he'd shrug and say that's the price to pay for social justice.

Certainly feminism and homosexuality have long since become socio-political institutions in their own right, and following after their own ends -- which are definitely incompatible with the 'Western values' I'm interested in establishing. Because they aren't being established currently.

Using the scare tactic of 'Radical Islam' to condemn 'anti-woman' and 'anti-gay' behavior is to conserve the present evil that America and the West now accept and champion as Good. Females and homos collectively do NOT need more rights, laws, protections, and support. They need constraint and disempowerment, and because Western men have been too cowardly and cucked to do that, elements of Islam filled the void.

That is 'getting tough and smart'. Not more business as usual.

I think there are more Never Hillary Democrats than Never Trump Republicans. A three way race (with Johnson) is more pro-Trump than a two way race. Real Clear Politics (top right).

A very nice article indicating that mainstream conservatism (the "cucks") is coming around:

"Muslims are motivated by Islamic supremacism, the belief that sharia, Islam’s ancient, totalitarian law, must be imposed on society.

"Based on all this, there is abundant Washington and media speculation that the attack is 'ISIS-inspired.' This is consistent with the bipartisan, government-approved inanity we have been following for a quarter-century, what I often call the political class’s concoction of 'An Islam of Their Very Own.' It goes something like this:

"Islam is a religion of peace, period. End of discussion. “Violent extremist” outfits such as ISIS and al-Qaeda kill wantonly, with no real ideological motivation. ISIS and al-Qaeda are thus not Islamic, but actually anti-Islamic — and if they cite Islamic scripture to justify their atrocities, they are “hijacking” and “perverting” Islam. Because we must see these groups as “anti-Islam” rather than Islam, it is acceptable to call a mass-murder attack “terrorism” only if law-enforcement develops some plausible tie to these groups. Otherwise, if a Muslim is involved, stick with “workplace violence” and the like. Finally when an attack committed by a Muslim is too obviously terrorism to deny, call it “ISIS-inspired,” or “al-Qaeda-inspired,” or “Hamas political resistance,” etc. — but by all means do not, absolutely do not, ascribe it to Islam in any way shape or form.

"This is idiocy."
