Irony: Gun Control version

A journalist tries to write an article about how easy it is to buy guns, is denied due to criminal record:
I was looking forward to shooting my new rifle the next day. I’ve shot guns. It’s fun. I was worried though, about having fun with guns in the current environment of outrage and horror. Had I been co-opted by the purchase process? By the friendly staff at Maxon’s?

At 5:13 Sarah from Maxon called. They were canceling my sale and refunding my money. No gun for you. I called back. Why? “I don’t have to tell you,” she said.

A few hours later, Maxon sent the newspaper a lengthy statement, the key part being: “it was uncovered that Mr. Steinberg has an admitted history of alcohol abuse, and a charge for domestic battery involving his wife.”

Well, didn’t see that coming.
The best part is how he tried, and failed, to set the Narrative.
Mr. Steinberg was very aggressive on the phone with Sarah, insisting he was going to write that we denied him because he is a journalist. “Journalist” is not a protected class, BTW. We contacted his editor and said that, while we don’t normally provide a reason for a denial, in this case to correct the record before you publish, here’s why; we pasted a couple links of press accounts of his past behavior and his admission of same. He’s free to believe or disbelieve that’s why he was denied, but that *is* why he was denied. There was no “We’ll see you in court!!!!” type of language from us – we simply want to set the record straight. That it undermined his thesis and rendered the column incoherent isn’t really our problem, is it?
Never talk to the media. Just do not do it. They are almost comically dishonest and they will go to any length in order to write the story they plan to write regardless of what the relevant facts happen to be.

And perhaps more to the point, they aren't necessary anymore. The risk/reward ratio now tips heavily to the "why even bother" side. Furthermore, even just talking to them can be downright dangerous for the average citizen:
A Denver newspaper columnist is arrested for stalking a story subject. In Cincinnati, a television reporter is arrested on charges of child molestation. A North Carolina newspaper reporter is arrested for harassing a local woman. A drunken Chicago Sun-Times columnist and editorial board member is arrested for wife beating. A Baltimore newspaper editor is arrested for threatening neighbors with a shotgun. In Florida, one TV reporter is arrested for DUI, while another is charged with carrying a gun into a high school. A Philadelphia news anchorwoman goes on a violent drunken rampage, assaulting a police officer. In England, a newspaper columnist is arrested for killing her elderly aunt.

Unrelated incidents, or mounting evidence of that America's newsrooms have become a breeding ground for murderous, drunk, gun-wielding child molesters? Answers are elusive, but the ever-increasing toll of violent crimes committed by journalists has led some experts to warn that without programs for intensive mental health care, the nation faces a potential bloodbath at the hands of psychopathic media vets.

What I love is that the guy who apparently abused his wife is trying to play the "holier than you" card.

I remember seeing a few years ago some guy was talking to a reporter on TV and he denigrated journalist and the reporter took umbrage saying something along the lines of "I'm a journalist, do you think I'm a liar?" The other guy said no and apologized. I would have told him, "you're a journalist aren't you?"

I realized most journalists were clueless hacks back in the early 90s. I was a UNIX and network admin at an organization that was connected to Arpanet before it was spun-off and became the Internet. I had a first-hand expert understanding of the early Internet's technology and culture.

So, once I saw what was being reported about the Internet I realized that these people were beyond not having a clue. It wasn't that they were wrong, it was that they lacked the intellectual foundation to even comprehend what they were seeing.

It was like sending a five year old to watch a shuttle launch from the control room and expecting to get a cogent report from them afterwards.

Blogger Ron Winkleheimer June 20, 2016 11:53 AM

But hey, they went to J-school, so that makes them experts in everything.

Blogger Dave June 20, 2016 11:54 AM

We need a Board of Journalism Accreditation immediately. Also a bipartisan federal taskforce with a never-ending charter to ensure the safety of our citizens is protected from deranged journalists. Because if one person is offended by a journalist; it is too many.

The Germans had a simple word: Lügenpresse. Sums it up nicely, since they'll lie about their own criminal acts like stalking, child-molestation, etc. - not even to mention the ongoing lies about black-on-white violent crime rate. In the USA - this has been under way since the AP guidelines (orders) were issued by the (((New Duranty Times))) in the late 1940s. Not only should we completely ignore them and have nothing to do with them, we should be thinking of ways to actively destroy and ruin them - a 'final solution' as it were. How is it that these legacy newspapers in cities from Killadelphia to Detroilet to Bell-Curve City stay afloat?? We've been reading about how they've one foot in the grave and the other on a banana-peel for two decades running now. Isn't there any way they can be given a shove?? It's not as if their demise is not very well earned.

1. Has he been fired from the Chicago Sun Times?
2. Have all of his articles been scrubbed from their publications?

If they haven't done that, well, the most important question is: Why does the Chicago Sun Times like wife beaters?

Delete your newspaper.

Anonymous Faceless June 20, 2016 12:03 PM

He continues to use the imprimatur of the Chicago Sun Times to gloss over and deflect from his real crime of having raised his hand to his wife. It sure looks real bad - perhaps they would just feel better if the CST apologized and then fired him?

Blogger Noah B June 20, 2016 12:06 PM

Most "newspapers" are now nothing more than mouthpieces for the Associated Press. In my town, they only stay afloat by littering homes and businesses with packages of ads they dump onto non-subscribers so they can inflate their circulation numbers. If laws against littering were actually enforced, they'd be out of business overnight.

Blogger Ron Winkleheimer June 20, 2016 12:08 PM

So now we have the NYT stating that Romans call for executing gays, cause either they are just that ignorant or they are straight out liars trying to create an equivalence between Christianity and Islam where one doesn't exist. Or both.

Clearly we need Journalism control: before getting a plum Democratic operative with a byline job....err, I mean a journalist job, the applicant needs a background check (mental health, criminal history, terror group sympathies, voting Democratic, etc.) and then a 14 day (minimum) waiting period.

Blogger Ron Winkleheimer June 20, 2016 12:15 PM

@Noah B

A couple of years ago my local paper tried to do a promotion where they would deliver you the paper for free for 6 weeks to try to get you to resubscribe. I had canceled our subscription a couple of years prior because we would get the paper, bring it into the house, and after a day or two would toss it without even taking it out of the plastic bag it comes in.

So, they call me up and for some reason I agree to the promotion.

The first day we get the paper I bring it in take it out of the plastic bag and turn to the op-ed page and read the op-ed from the paper on a contentious local issue.

Turns out, according to the paper's editorial board, the side I was on is racist because only a racist could be on the side I was on, because the only reason to be on that side was racism.

I tossed the paper and the rest that they delivered without bothering to read them.

Cause why would they want a racist like me to read their paper?

I tell people: pick a field of knowledge that you know like the back of your hand, perhaps a long-time career or hobby. Now, how accurately do the media report on that topic? They're laughably off-base, right? That's how accurate they are on everything else.

And that's just from general incompetence, before you get to the bias and dishonesty.

I'm sure the occasional individual technically fitting some definition of "journalist" doesn't check all the above boxes.

@21 a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence is also a disqualifying offense. It is called out specifically on a form 4473. Interestingly enough if he marked the form that he had never been convicted of that offense he has now committed a Felony. I am sure that BATFE will get right on arresting and charging him

Blogger Chris Mallory June 20, 2016 12:51 PM

@21
Thanks to the (((Lautenberg))) Amendment, being convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence charge or being under a restraining order/order of protection/what ever your jurisdiction calls it will bar you from owning/buying a firearm.

The law is offensive to the traditional rights of Americans in that it has been held to apply ex post facto, it does not require a jury trial (in some states the charges of domestic violence do not rise to the level of a serious offense requiring a jury trial), and the offense does not actually have to involve "the use or attempted use of physical force".

(((Steinberg))), the reporter, seems to gloss over why (why?) he has the Illinois state mandatory Firearms Owner ID card (which takes a solid month or more to be issued by the state police) right there and handy when he's "assigned" the story by his editor.

The column reads more like a screenplay than a dispassionate news article.

You might almost wonder if the entire column was scripted in advance, like someone shopping for a ghostwriter to pen someone's hagiographic "autobiography."

A little background on Steinberg, he plays the white guilt racial card on one hand and the Jewish trump card the next. If he self scolds like lefty whites are supposed to do he is white and all whites are bad. If he is good it is by his miracle of birth and super duper cultural heritage.

Yes it is kind of annoying, but we accept and love our scolds in the USA and Neil Steinberg has made a living scolding us bad people.

And gun control in Illinois is nothing and I mean nothing more than a virtue signaling distraction for white libtards. No one is going to disarm young men of color it is not going to happen in a million years and deep down in their pea brains they know this.

Blogger YIH June 20, 2016 1:30 PM

Steinberg. But of course. ''a charge for domestic''.
How much do you want this clown supported Bill Clinton's ironically named Violence Against Women Act?
That's right, due to that, an arrest, and only an arrest is enough to DQ from firearms. Even if the charge is dropped or the DA chooses not to prosecute, you're still screwed.

Recall Winston Smith's job in Nineteen Eighty-Four where he would rewrite past news articles to incorporate The Party's new Narrative, eliminating the old Narrative and the discard the old evidence down the (literal) Memory Hole.

This is what columnists and news copy writers do for a living.

The CREATE stories whose entire function is to brainwash people into the given hiveminded Narrative of their paymasters.

The reason they're all leftist lunatic cultists is because only people with that predisposition can stand to do the work.

Steinberg is worse than that. Look up the Innocence Project.

Virtue signaling crossing over into actions that resulted in the release of violent offenders from jail based on imagined police brutality charges. Those offenders often went on to murder again.

Anonymous Sam the Man June 20, 2016 1:37 PM

Actually you need a conviction to have a permanent disbarment from owning a firearm. That said they can deny you on an arrest and it is up to you to document that the charge was dismissed or that you were found innocent. The way you do this is to contact either the state police 9if they are using a state database) or the ATF and then you can proceed from there. There are folks who get denied wrongly.

Ironic thread for me. I worked for a newspaper for a couple of years in the 1990s in Metro Detroit (no, not the Detroit papers but one that was owned by Disney-ABC). I attended a gun-rights rally that had a park overflowing, well beyond the parking capacity even though it was also used for concerts. The next day I get to my office at a substation (I was in charge of the carriers for a district) and read there had only been "several hundred" attendees. The estimates by the park staff were over 10,000 at peak, with the event running for several hours and people coming or going making it likely closer to 15,000. After I quit the job (they did a organizational shuffle and wanted to demote me) I never felt the need to subscribe to a paper again.

So the MSM and the dyscommunications companies that surround them remind me of cats on meth - anything can happen. Journo creds are some of the most uninformed reality denialists. Lying, wife beating, drugs, embezzlement, harassment, stalking, drinking or as we saw last week a lady punched out another reporter when the mean reporter was ignoring a protected class.

Jefferson county OH is ground zero level lunacy in print and media, its so embarrassing OH rez groan. WPXI, WTOV, 7, all pull stories about ISIS cells in Pitt, OH mocked WV when we passed laws to open/carry conceal with less restrictions for OUR SAFETY. No, in Jefferson county you are not only not allowed to be safe but beware of the cats on meth that dont want kitty treats, they want your car, money, watch, food, if you leave a one dollar bill in Steubenville it will be gone after a 30 person brawl. Juronos in Jeff Co only report free food giveaways the day after the event happens. Major crimes occur across OH that dont fit the medias narrative orders and those stories never make it to light, its yet another reason why I warn everyone against OH.

http://martin-preib-b7is.squarespace.com/news/2015/3/21/failure-to-represent
"In the waning moments of Governor Pat Quinn’s scandal-plagued administration, Quinn secretly commuted the sentence of Howard Morgan, a man who had been convicted of attempting to murder four police officers on a traffic stop in 2005, wounding three of them. One of officers was saved only because of his vest. These officers endured a nine-year battle to get Morgan convicted, as the wrongful conviction playbook was hurled at them throughout two criminal trials, a playbook that attempted to make them the villains, not Morgan, despite the overwhelming evidence against Morgan.

And who took credit for springing Morgan?

None other than David Protess, who boasted about the fact that his organization freed Morgan, the same David Protess who framed the detectives in the Porter case, who altered evidence in another case, lied to Northwestern University and was fired, the same David Protess whose conduct the prosecutor assailed when she let Alstory Simon out of prison, a man Protess had framed for murders he didn’t commit. Today things are finally different. Thanks to the internet, "why bother?" indeed.

As an example of why you absolutely should not bother. After Orlando, the NY Daily News sent one of their writers with the staggeringly appropriate name of Kuntzmen out to fire an AR-15. Apparently some retired cop from Germany who too stupid to own a gun shop let him do it.

I ask people what should be done to someone who steals guns and illegally sells them. Then point out that the gay democrat Mayor of Harrisburg PA for 20 years, Steven Reed, got caught stealing guns from the city's civil war museum and selling them.

and a charge for domestic battery involving his wife

Now that is double the irony, and this Marxist True Believer doesn't even understand why.

without programs for intensive mental health care

That is the last place we want to go or allow them to go. They've long wanted this. It sure as hell isn't going to be us who decides the guidelines to "mental health". They get this, it's game, set and match - for the useful, broken Marxist tools - who clamor and beg for it- and most importantly, for everyone else.

Trump has an issue. America's broken media

This journalist is a piece of work. He can't get a gun because of his past abuse of his wife and it's the gun store's fault.

Same SJW at BLM protest Monday evening: F--- the police!

I don't necessarily agree with the "Don't talk to media, ever" strategy by gun owners/blogggers; I think that refusing to engage cedes them the field of battle.

A possible better strategy was shown by the gun owners who were the subject of Katie Couric's creative editing: record any interview independently, and release it if skullduggery is practiced. I'll even go farther and say that gun owners/bloggers should go into an interview with the MSM by telling the interviewer up front, "I consider you to be a hostile interviewer with an anti-gun agenda. I am going to record this interview independently and release it to friendly media sources if you practice deception." Probably at that point many interviews will be cancelled, but some won't - - and the interviewer will have to play the game honestly, without loaded dice.

In Other news The convergence of SCOTUS is now well under way. This particular case had absolutely nothing to do with race (everyone involved was white) and yet Sotomayor took the opportunity in her dissent to write a SocJus manifesto.

@#21. Were-Puppy.
I thought that felons couldn't buy a gun. Says here these are misdemeanors. Isn't that the same level as a parking ticket?

As others have mentioned above, the BATFE 4473 specifically mentions the domestic-violence misdemeanor charges as grounds for denial. This is what is known as the (((Lautenberg))) amendment, which I note with interest still stands, despite all those Repukes who "control" both houses of the Banana Empire's answer to Caligula's Roman Senate.

A God-Emperor is needed. Probably won't get one even if Trump overcomes the Gay-Old-Pedos who'll no doubt aid and assist herself in ginning up the votes of the vast necropoles of spectral electors residing in states like Illinois, plus the hordes of dindus and illegal aliens who vote early and often - under terms of a consent decree which the alleged "opposition" party has abided since 1983.

As far as the media goes is it time they answer some questions?

I for one think they have some explaining to do

I was looking forward to shooting my new rifle the next day. I’ve shot guns. It’s fun.

For some reason, this bothers me. I've probably shot more weapons than this guy ever thought of.

Just doesn't smell right.

@70 basementhomebrewer nothing in your link about a supreme court case, your link is about an EPA guy retiring to avoid an IG investigation.

I think you meant https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/jun/20/sonia-sotomayor-opposition-evidence-unlawful-stops-police-crime-law Yep if the cops don't offer to have you speak the mecicant embassy those dead hookers and cocaine should be thrown out.

Blogger Snidely Whiplash June 20, 2016 6:43 PM

You know, I've got a Lee-Enfield SMLE. .303 British ammo, steel buttplate, no recoil compensation AT ALL. 10 rounds through that will leave you sore and deaf for hours. But it won't bruise your shoulder.

To be fair, he was probably hyperventilating the whole time.

The poor, poor man. He should get some weapons training from these little 19 year old Jewish soldier girls:

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=israeli+soldier+women&ia=images&iax=1

Maybe they could dry his tears, hold his hands, and teach him to hold his weapon properly.

And if he is really, really good,(and his shoulder doesn't hurt too, too much) they might let him fire their M-16s on full auto.

A Toronto Star reporter I used to quite like back in the day was let go for threatening a blogger because of perceived soggy knees. Originally I became a fan because of her sharp media analysis and regulatory nerdity, but after the wall, she got on the cat lady bandwagon and eventually ended up canned. Sad!
