Up to 37,500 views!

I expect you will understand why this announcement by McRapey made me laugh:
My piece earlier this week on Clinton and Sanders blew up a bit, with roughly 75,000 views over two days.
Ah, how the most popular blog in science fiction has fallen. Sad! As one might expect, McRapey concludes that his declining site traffic must mean that blogs, while not quite dead yet, are less important than Facebook and Twitter.

What's amusing is how McRapey considers roughly 37,500 daily views to be blowing up, whereas the traffic here averaged 67,955 daily views in May and is currently running at a rate of 76,166 views per day in June. Whatever's traffic is now between one-fourth and one-fifth that of VP, and the ratio is steadily falling. I will not surprised if by this time next year, it is one-tenth.

While he's correct to echo Mike Cernovich's observations in stating that Facebook and Twitter tend to be more reliable drivers of short-term link traffic these days, what McRapey fails to understand is that blogs have become online community centers that are capable of supporting a broad range of activities.

Such as, for example, this Jobs Wanted notification, before I forget and it disappears too far down the email list.
  • Hiring: Intermediate/Senior Ruby on Rails developer in the Southeast USA. If you have experience working with clients, APIs and know your way around the rails framework and TDD, contact Vox who will forward me your emails. I'll respond at which point we can talk specifics. Relocation necessary.
Also, if you are a New Release subscriber, you'll want to check your email tomorrow. Castalia has two new ebooks launching this month, which does not count the new print and audio editions being released. And as both the Production Editor and I have concluded, one of them is right up there with Awake in the Night Land; it's definitely one of the best books we have published, and possibly even the best to date.

As in, "will still be read in 50 years" level of good.

Blogger pdwalker June 12, 2016 12:49 PM

That's quite a claim. Who's the writer? (Or, I can just wait until I get that email and find out)

Blogger Jack Ward June 12, 2016 12:57 PM

If its right up there or exceeds Night Land it will be popular 50 or more years into the future. Depending the nature of said future.

Well, that is praise worth considering. I'll see what Meredith thinks when she gets the email.

There's a certain point where you just let go of actual book releases because they have no relation to overall reality.

Blogger VD June 12, 2016 1:33 PM

McRapey has gone full meta. He doesn't need Tor Books to buy him a place on the NYT Bestsellers List to say he is a best-selling author. He doesn't appear to believe he even needs to write a book in the first place anymore.

The question for Scalzi is can he adjust as tastes change? When he wrote the first three installments of Old Man's War, he largely did so during the Bush years, and his SJW tendencies, though evident, were less egregious than in his later works, starting with the Human Dimension, which was published well into Obama's first term.

In HD the reader eventually encounters a rogue colony of space-faring racists visited by a omni-powerful alien who gives them an ultimatum [spoiler alert]: if the racists don't evacuate their illegal colony, they will all die instantly. Red Shirts all the way around. Then then the hapless people on earth will be given an ultimatum: Wipe out the small number of "racists" among you, or see humanity wiped off the face of the earth.

Scalzi and friends clearly lack the omnipowerful capabilities of the avenging alien. But after encountering such a thinly veiled homicidal ideation injected into the middle of a Sci Fi story, it is reasonable to wonder whether Scalzi is the type who has no problem with seeing significant numbers of his fellow citizens killed if he thought it necessary, you know, in the interest of maintaining galactic peace and all that.

Given the way Scalzi and friends are quick to pull to the social trigger on the r-word, the definition of racist seems a bit too elastic, especially when being a racist is viewed as a capital offense in certain social quarters.

When Scalzi's book sales lose serious altitude, he will need to jettison the political crap, especially if his editors get fired and the new crew wants stuff with broader appeal.

Will Scalzi adjust? Can he ever abandon his feminized approach to writing for the masses, an approach that at least got him this far?

More to the point, can he let go of his Gore-Vidal-like-obsession-with-politically-self-indulgent crap and just concentrate on writing good stories?

Or will he stay "Locked In," and double down, clinging to SJW form?

Really? THAT'S the plot?

So glad I never bothered with him.

@9: "Really? THAT'S the plot?

No. It was just a gratuitous plot device.

Looking forward to this new book from Castalia House.

Based on discussion above, doesn't look like I'll be breaking my No Scalzi record any time soon.

Facebook and Twitter tend to be more reliable drivers of short-term link traffic these days

But this may not be sustainable as traffic overall is dropping on both platforms. Someone recently proclaimed that we have reached "peak social media". I think websites and blogs will still be viable mediums.

Are you serious about the side plot being about removing all the racists?

Why have I never heard this before? I have never read anything by him. I guess I never will. Anyone who comes up with that weak sauce for plot deserves to be forgotten.

You think he's kidding? We have solar powered chargers for just that purpose. Yeah, officially they're made for cellphones, but what good is a cell phone going to be after teotwawki? Just go to Amazon and search for solar charger.
