Well, that's interesting. Wonder how I should vote? ... [thinks]

Anonymous Laz July 20, 2016 8:06 AM

Besides Fury Road being female-centric, what made you put Age of Ultron over Fury Road?

Blogger VD July 20, 2016 8:16 AM

Besides Fury Road being female-centric, what made you put Age of Ultron over Fury Road?

I liked it better and thought it was a better movie.

Blogger Nate July 20, 2016 8:35 AM

Fury Road wasn't nearly as bad as the maroons over at RoK let on. I mean a subtext of the movie was "women can't maintain a civilization".

of course RoK missed that.

OpenID sigsawyer July 20, 2016 8:41 AM

Fury Road is a better movie if you watch it as a tragedy where an ascendent warrior-religion trying to piece together the broken remains of an utterly ruined humanity is thwarted by the same forces of leftism that led the planet to that point, and all the resources that they so carefully gathered are squandered in a cathartic moment of womanly 'muh feelz'

Anonymous Clay July 20, 2016 8:49 AM

Well, Im just getting back from Red-Fishing, so I apologize if I'm "behind the times".

Anyway, I've basically been an old Rock guy all my life.

While driving back from Port Fourchon, LA, my female best buddy, stuck in some song by someone named BORN?

Called "Electric Love"?

Never heard it before. I Thought it was a girl singing it.

Good song, lyrics, vocals, and harmony.

Just a stupid comment, as always.

But...listen to it...and Crank It Up if you should choose to do so.

Blogger YIH July 20, 2016 8:50 AM

1. My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: “The Cutie Map”
Don't tell me you actually watched that.

Blogger Titus Quinctius Cincinnatus July 20, 2016 9:02 AM

BTW, VD, I want to thank you.

You're pretty much the reason I started reading SF again a few years ago.

Blogger CM July 20, 2016 9:02 AM

Probably at someone's recommendation.

MLP:FiM is far and away better than the original show. And that episode sold me.

I'm surprised Angry Birds Movie didn't make the list. It is a type of fantasy in the same vein as MLP, right?

Blogger Nate July 20, 2016 9:05 AM

"Don't tell me you actually watched that."

If you haven't seen it.. you should shut up. The nomination itself is a brilliant troll but the episode itself is an absolute sledgehammer to the skull of the SJWs.

Blogger Diego Del Sol July 20, 2016 9:27 AM

This may be have done recently on another post here but I'd have them ranked this way:

1. Guardians of the Galaxy
2. Ant-Man (aka Micro-Aggressor)
3. Avengers: Civil War edition
4. Avengers: Ultron edition

I enjoyed The Martian. Didn't see Ex Machina. Ultron and Fury Road were meh. Stars Wars: Mary Sue Rules was dreck.

Anonymous Determinator July 20, 2016 9:28 AM

@CM Angry Birds didn't even come out until nominations were already locked in. It will be eligible for next year.

Blogger Human Animal July 20, 2016 9:35 AM

System is rigged!

(mlp) ... absolute sledgehammer to the skull of the SJWs.

A mythological, virtue-centric kids show is anti-communist? Gosh.

BEST DRAMATIC PRESENTATION
Didn't see The Martian, but with that topping the other four, I'm curious.

You're pretty much the reason I started reading SF again a few years ago.
VD, the Castalia blog, essays by that Leo Grin guy? Yeah, it's nice to have curators with a palette, rather than insecurities. The Rageaholic, RazörFist put The Shadow on my long term reading lists.

Blogger VD July 20, 2016 9:39 AM

System is rigged!

Have a look at what Castalia has been publishing compared to the other publishing houses. I don't think it's close, even at this point. And it's only going to become more obvious as time goes on, as some of the projects we have in the works come to fruition.

Blogger Nate July 20, 2016 9:45 AM

"A mythological, virtue-centric kids show is anti-communist? Gosh. '

it was fairly discombobulating to me too. My daughter (3 at the time) was watching it... and I preview everything she watches.. so I sat down with her... and about 5 minutes into I had to stop it... and start it over from the beginning. I simply could not comprehend the level of subversion I was seeing... from My Little Pony.

Anonymous Clay July 20, 2016 9:49 AM

You boys should get a room.

Blogger Human Animal July 20, 2016 10:38 AM

I meant to be facetious... and I don't know enough about the job to judge, but yes, I'd rather be on a desert island with what comes out of Castalia than Baen.

re: Nate

Bugs Bunny turned into Seinfeld and MLP was dropping anvils on ponies. I'm not surprised they ended up on the "wrong side" of the culture war.

Blogger YIH July 20, 2016 10:39 AM

Oh dear, Nate has become a brony.

Blogger S1AL July 20, 2016 10:48 AM

"I liked it better and thought it was a better movie."

Well that's just all kinds of reasonable.

Blogger SteelPalm July 20, 2016 10:54 AM

Quite brilliant.

Off-topic, Fury Road was a pretty good film, but I'm surprised so many keystrokes were spent on what was essentially a remake of the second half of Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior.

Blogger tweell July 20, 2016 10:59 AM

Voted. Thanks, o Dark Lord!

Blogger Nate July 20, 2016 11:19 AM

"Oh dear, Nate has become a brony."

Nate is not a brony. In fact the Cutie Map is the only MLP thing I have actually seen.

There is a big difference between a brony and dad with a daughter.

I keep telling everyone I have this long term plan to take over the world... and they think I'm kidding.

They just don't realize how long term it is. You just wait till you see the Overlords created by the Dread Ilk Breeding Program.

"There is a big difference between a brony and dad with a daughter"

I'm assuming it's mostly the "having sex with a woman" part.

Blogger Chrom July 20, 2016 11:54 AM

Maybe it was just me, but as I submitted my vote for Doctor Who I swore I heard Joss Whedon cry out in pain. I hope he's okay.

Blogger Nate July 20, 2016 12:00 PM

"I'm assuming it's mostly the "having sex with a woman" part."

we have a winner.

Blogger pdwalker July 20, 2016 12:06 PM

we do indeed have a winner.

Blogger Jakob Niedzwiecki July 20, 2016 12:14 PM

Very solid song. There's great stuff coming out all the time, one just need to look a little.

Anonymous Rolf July 20, 2016 12:59 PM

I dunno. My Little Pony and Space Raptor Butt Invasion in the same voting list. Verily, the mind doth boggle.

Anonymous Pax_Romana July 20, 2016 1:13 PM

I'm no fan of MLP, but have a few "bronies" as friends. One of them - a fellow who leans alt-right, oddly enough - insisted that I watch this episode, even if nothing else. I still can't stand the show (though when I get kids, they're totally watching this), but I definitely liked "The Cutie Map" episode.

Don't have to be a brony or a dad to appreciate a good lesson for kids in an unexpected place.

Blogger tublecane July 20, 2016 1:54 PM

@5-I didn't care for any of the characters, including the wet blanket Mad Max, besides the warrior guy, whatever his name was. He had a tragic dimension.

Blogger Alexander July 20, 2016 4:06 PM

Just voted.

Huh. My daughter, who is 35 now, can out-shoot me with a handgun.

Guess who had a .22 rifle & a 410 shotgun in her hands at about 9 years old?

'Have a look at what Castalia has been publishing'

I'd like to see you publish the last Matt Helm- 'The Dominators' according to Wikipedia. And a collection of the Barbara Hambly short stories she's been putting out on her own. And the blue book for the Poleotechnic League and Terran Empire series, wherever that went when Poul Anderson died.

I loved Fury Road. It destroys feminism. Max is beaten up and used as a 70mph blood bag, gets in a BIGGER wreck, and while having a slight bit of trouble (he's lost a lot of blood remember), STILL beats purported hero Furiosa and steals her rig. Realizing he could use her help a little and feeling guilt from all the dead he left behind in the previous movies, he saves her and the breeders. He returns her to her FAILED matriarchal society, the failure of which drives Furiosa to decide the best course of action is to DIE in the desert. Max gives her a dafuq? and realizes a bold plan to take over the city. Due to Max and The War Boy's heroism and sacrifice they succeed, during which the remaining members of the failed matriarchal society all die. The best part, as Furiosa literally rises to the highest office in the city is a shot of Max GOING HIS OWN WAY. Max realizes these people are most likely pozzed, and he's better off by himself. WORST FEMINIST FILM EVAH.
